REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY
2017-2018
Dear St. Mary’s Community Looking beyond the St. Mary’s campus to the world, we have so much to be thankful for, especially the opportunity to impact the future positively with the work we do every day. We have the ability to encourage our students to live globally, to be responsible caretakers of our world, to traverse a global landscape, and most of all to be well prepared to do all that with compassion! Just as our IB curriculum impacts our students every day, the environment in which we educate impacts everyone in the St. Mary’s community, and this has truly been a year of exciting change and transformation. Through the Imagine More campaign we raised the funds to move forward with the first phase of construction on our master plan. Our students returned to campus and found new learning spaces in the Bhathal Merage Academic Center that encourage their exploration, creativity and interaction—spaces that are flexible, adaptable and inviting. The Green Family Commons is complete, and every day our students have nutritious choices for lunch and an opportunity to hone their cooking skills in our new kitchen. And at the Spring Gala, the community stepped up and people raised their paddles during our Fund-a-Need to enhance campus security and safety. Our other fundraising efforts—the St. Mary’s Fund, Golf Classic, Jog-a-thon— helped to provide resources that impact the breadth and quality of our students’ experiences in the classroom, on the athletics field or on the stage. All of this success was possible because we have volunteers who dedicate countless hours to raise funds and be engaged in their children’s education. To all of the generous people who are listed in this report, thank you for investing in our students. The number of donors and volunteers, the amount raised and the percentage of participation are impressive. You make a huge difference in our ability to provide our students with an exceptional IB education. William Arthur Ward said, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” As we launch a new school year and celebrate our 25th anniversary, we have so much to be happy about at St. Mary’s School. Imagine More Campaign We are making history at St. Mary’s School. As a community we are coming together with a singular focus to provide the best educational environment for today’s students and generations of students to come. When we began visioning the future of St. Mary’s through our strategic planning process, none of us knew what lay ahead. Through surveys, focus groups and in-depth discussions over a two-year period, big ideas began to emerge from our community on how we could take our IB program to the next level. The biggest idea was to look at every square foot of the campus as a possible setting for learning. What kind of environment would help develop the 21st century skills children will need in a world where the only constant is change? What kind of spaces would nurture engaged, passionate and intellectually curious learners? What more could we do to create a place where children have a healthy and balanced experience every day? We imagined. And then we imagined more. We piloted our big idea by creating the IB Hub with the generous philanthropic support of our families. We immediately knew that we were on the right path. The IB Hub gave us a taste of what a transformative environment looks like. Quickly we determined that our classrooms, which were furnished the way that education was taught 50 years ago, needed a major upgrade. Once again, our families stepped up and provided the resources to purchase mobile furniture that allows students to move freely around the classroom, forming groups and encouraging collaboration. Now it was time to begin the big transformation. This past year we raised $4.83 million through the Imagine More campaign and were able, as promised, to begin construction in June on the Bhathal Merage Academic Center, the Green Family Commons and a new entrance to the campus. This fall our students returned to campus to discover inventive spaces designed to spark their imagination, engage their creativity and ignite their motivation. The reimagined spaces throughout the campus are truly transformative. Our newly designed Science Labs, an Arts Wing and classrooms and hallways support collaborative work and ongoing projects, encourage creativity and promote a culture of innovation. The Green Family Commons provides a dining experience that integrates with our curriculum and promotes healthy eating, sustainable living and community building. But our work is not finished. We have imagined even more for our students—a new building to house the Early Education Program, Lower School STEAM classrooms and outdoor spaces that are green and provide shade. The pace at which we can complete the next bold steps forward in transforming our campus will rely on how soon we can raise the funds through Imagine, Even More.

Golf Classic
The St. Mary’s Golf Classic celebrated 20 years in 2017. We were hosted by our local Aliso Viejo Country Club, tucked into a neighborhood where many of our families reside. We enjoyed some special additions this year in celebration of this anniversary: a silent raffle with items such as a wine tasting and a Callaway golf bag, fun games at many holes, breakfast courtesy of Chronic Tacos and a Travis Mathew pop-up shopping experience. Gala 2018 On May 4, 2018, at the Fashion Island Hotel, we were transported to Old Havana where fedoras and cigars were a staple and rum was served at noontime meals. We enjoyed an evening of Cuban beats, Latin food and authentic drinks underpinned by the casual yet festive atmosphere that is Havana. As guests entered the pre-function area, they were greeted with a steel drum and complimentary mojitos as they perused the silent auction items. As the ballroom opened, the smells of multiple food stations called the guests in and they casually enjoyed Cubano Sandwiches, multiple salads, Chicken al Pastor Tacos and traditional Cuban rice and beans. This provided a dining experience with an engaging and conversational atmosphere. Following our traditional Fund-a-Need and live auction the dance oor came alive with the beats of our returning band, Undercover. Our evening successfully raised a total of $392,000 from live and silent auctions, sponsorships, ticket sales, opportunity drawing and Fund-a-Need. We look forward to the upgraded and new security features that were funded on this evening. Many thanks to each and every one of you who contributed to our Havana Nights Gala.
