After School Enrichment Program St. Mary’s after school enrichment classes are designed to provide an additional opportunity for all children in the St. Mary’s school community to enhance their learning beyond the classroom curriculum. Our program offers stimulating and fun classes for students from preschool through eighth grade. Registration is based on a first-come, first-served basis. Class sizes are limited. Please return the enclosed registration form and class fee to the St. Mary’s Business Office with the non-refundable amount by Monday, January 28. After January 28, there will be a late registration fee of $25.00. Spanish Circle Time Grade: PS & JK (3 years and up)

Children will get a jump start on their Spanish as they learn through play! Get ready for theatrical, active, and hands-on experiences featuring stories, games, and songs from different countries all around the Spanish-speaking world! Children will learn colors, shapes, numbers, and more basic Spanish vocabulary in this fun and highly-interactive 45-minute class. ¡Vámonos amigos! Karate Classes

Grade: PS & JK (3 years and up) Teamwork and listening-response games, character development, confidence and self-control. Classes include agility and movement development, self-defense strategies and tactics, awareness and safety training. Students will have fun in this fast paced, high energy class format. Instructor: Master Dan Lockhart, Director of the Martial Arts and Self Defense program at UCI and the owner/operator of Lockhart’s Karate Academy in Aliso Viejo. Master Lockhart has been training in Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan for 27 years and is a multi-time National Champion. He has taught martial arts in the local school districts for over 16 years and has a Degree in Psychology from UC Irvine with an emphasis on early childhood development facilitating his top quality instructional programs for students of all ages. Art Explorer Grade: PS & JK (3 years and up)

Are your children ready to explore art through the minds of some of history’s greatest artists? During this 12 week course, we will be introduced to a new master artist every Thursday, such as van Gogh and Picasso! We will learn about their life, the mediums and techniques they used, and their famous masterpieces. We will focus on color, texture, and form. The children will spend part of each class creating their own masterpiece that they can take home. Get those fridge magnets ready! Music and Movement Grade: PS & JK (3 years and up) Does your child love to move, sing and play musical instruments? From parachute games to fun and easy dance steps, this is the place to express your musical side! Come feel the rhythm, learn about musical notes and experience aerobic dance. Arts, Crafts and More Bisque Painting Grade: K - 8

It’s a new year with new pieces to paint. At the end of this course, students will have a variety of finished, functional pieces. During this 12 week program, students will learn how to glaze pottery with details for a finished masterpiece. A variety of pieces will be on hand to paint. Students choose the order they want to paint the pieces in. The pieces for the class are constantly rotating, so there is always something new each session. With 2013, a whole new variety of pieces are available from the companies. Students who wish to take the class a repeated time will be taught more advanced techniques and be able to create sets of pieces. Space is limited to 15 so sign up soon. Mixed Media Class Grade: K - 8 This class has been a huge success. The variety of projects has been exciting for the students. During this 12 week Program, students will create different pieces using a variety of materials. By the end of this course, students will have several finished pieces that are ready to display at home. We will create layers of different material on a flat surface that may vary from canvas to glass plates. We will use paint, gel medium, vellum paper, text, plaster, as well as, a variety of other things to create unique masterpieces. Space is limited to 15 so sign up soon. Ceramics Class Grade: K - 8 2013 is a new year and with that brings all new projects. During this 12 week program, students will end this session with at least six major projects ranging from coil work to slab projects. Students will be exposed to some of the amazing tools we have in the Art department. We create projects one week and then glaze them the following week. The students will learn new insight about the firing process and what each stage is. We do new projects every trimester so there is no concern if this is your first time or fifth time. The more experienced students will be pushed in to more advanced directions. Space is limited to 15 so please sign up soon. Mixed Media Adventure! Grade: 2 - 8 (open to students in Grade One based upon skills proficiency) Uncover your true creative potential through fun exploration of a variety of mixed media! In this enrichment workshop, participants will learn about techniques of naturalistic and symbolic portraiture as conceived by artists throughout the timeline of art history, and they will create realistic and abstract portraits using acrylic paint and assorted mixed media on canvas. Symbolism in art throughout the ages will also be investigated, and students will create chalk and oil pastel pieces and engravings inspired by these cutting edge works of art. Rodin’s timeless sculptures and Arp’s modern statues will be viewed, and students will use mixed media including foil and a variety of modeling materials to craft their own three dimensional works of art. Piano/Keyboard class Grade: K - 3 Bring the joy of music to your child through an interactive piano/music class which will enhance child’s abstract reasoning, math, fine motor skis, literacy and art in a unique way. Children will learn musical literacy with Do, Re, Mi syllables in the same way they learn language: Listen, speak (sing and play) write and read musical notation. (Continuing student will learn notation of the Base Clef and will learn to play with both hands). The class will provide unique opportunities for self expression, creativity and social interaction. Children will sing and play spring songs and songs and other simple known tunes. Other concepts will include: melodic &rhythmic patterns, beat, dynamics, music theory, singing and movement to music of famous composers. Exploring Puppetry Grade: K - 5 Puppets are great tools for expression and creativity. Plus they are just plain fun! In this class students will learn about the different types of puppets including hand puppets, shadow puppets, and marionettes. They will also make their own puppets and props, explore portraying emotion through expression, and even write and perform their own puppet show! Perfect for creative writers and artists, quirky characters, and budding actors! Beginning Drumline Grade: K - 8 Beginning Drumline offers students the chance to play marching snare drum, tenor drums, bass drum, mallet keyboard instruments, cymbals, and accessories in a standstill ensemble setting. Students focus on fundamental percussion techniques through the study of exercises, cadences, and popular repertoire. This course is open to students new to Drumline and those who have taken it during Session One. Material from previous sessions will be reviewed and expanded. Beginning Guitar Grade: 1 - 6 Students will receive step by step instruction on the acoustic guitar with chord and note exercises. Guitar: Songs and Chords Grade: 3 - 6

This class is open to beginning and intermediate guitarists with an emphasis on chord strumming. A mix of songs both new and old are introduced with multiple strum patterns and rhythms. This class is designed for students who want to improve their beginner skills or add more intermediate techniques. Instrument required. Music Technology Grade: 3 - 8 Music Technology classes will explore a variety of musical technology, both as a tool to learn, and a way to express oneself. iPad and computer technology will be key in this course. Students will brush up on their music theory using a fun computer program called Music Ace. This teaches musical concepts in an easy-to-understand way and has a game after each lesson. One of the most powerful ways to express oneself in music is through the creation of, or composing of music. We will explore music composition with several apps, including GarageBand. Throughout the course students will create music and will take home a CD of their creations at the end of the class. Hip Hop Dance Grade: 4 - 8: Monday & K-3: Thursday Hip Hop till you drop! It’s time to have a blast and learn the latest dance moves! This beginning/intermediate dance class combines all different styles of hip hop dancing. Classes will start by warming up to the latest hip hop dance songs. Next a short hip hop routine will be broken down and taught to students. Finally they will perform it in small groups of 3-5 to an applauding audience (the rest of the class). The 45 minute class is fun, fast, and a great workout as well! The kids are guaranteed to have a great time. Both girls and boys are encouraged to participate. Dress: workout clothes or loose comfortable attire, sneakers or rubber soled shoes. Tee it up with Total Golf Adventures! Grade: K - 6

TGA is bringing the golf course to St. Mary’s! Students learn all aspects of golf, from swing fundamentals to game rules, etiquette and life values, while advancing through a 5-Level Program. TGA maintains a safe, nurturing environment with a maximum 10:1 ratio of students per professional golf instructor. TGA provides all equipment including real irons and woods. First time students receive a hat plus a specialized achievement award. Organized around theme-based units, this enrichment course emphasizes communicative abilities and basic vocabulary building through songs, games, stories, listening and fun interactive activities to encourage a love for the Italian language and culture! Academic Origami at St. Mary’s Grade: 1 - 6

Academic Origami is a fun and exciting class where children will learn the Japanese art of origami along with a different aspect of Japanese culture each week! Every student will receive an origami instruction sheet on what was covered that day. They will take home projects after every class! Students will make origami hearts, origami cups, samurai, and several animals such as dogs, cats, cranes and more! They will start with easy creations and get more and more complex!! Chess has been proven to help develop critical thinking and memory skills, confidence, sportsmanship, patience and problem solving skills. Fast Action Math Grade: 3 - 5

In Fast Action Math, students will be attacking those stubborn math facts head on through interactive math games, fact triangles/flash cards, Mad Minutes and more! They will work hard to gain automaticity at their level in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students will work independently, as well as in small group settings, to focus in on their individual needs. Get ahead fast! LEGO速 Robotics: Inventions & Amazing Animals Grade: 1 - 5 Math, engineering and science come to life in our 'Bricks 4 Kidz Engineering' class using LEGO速 bricks. Students will experience hands-on engineering fundamentals as they build different motorized models. Each week, students will build a different invention or gadget and will learn the mechanics and engineering principles behind each model (examples include a motorized treadmill, conveyor belt and a catapult). Though our structured builds, students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills. Our student 'inventors' will learn why, where and how these inventions work. Second part of the program is all about Amazing Animals. It's a zoo in here! This is a unit sure to delight kids who love creatures. We'll be building LEGO速 models of snakes, insects, frogs and more. Each week we'll discuss fascinating facts about the animals we build, from the frog that eats his own skin to the dragonfly that can't fly unless it's above 65 degrees. Students will love these moving models that celebrate the wonders of the animal kingdom. Students build a customized Mini Figure using our MiniFig Factory kit and accessorize it with tool or weapon of their choice! See how fast you are to “buzz in” with the correct answer for Jeopardy or learn how to sink your opponent in Battleship. Some games we will explore are Pictionary, Othello, Monopoly, Scrabble, and the card game “Spoons” or bring your own and teach others to play.
