Our Summer Resort is a robust program that offers something for every student, as young as age two through Grade 8! Through inquiry-based explorations students are able to participate in: Academic Prep Programs, Specialty Camps, Athletic Camps and St. Mary’s Day Camp! In a safe and fun environment, students can try new things, sharpen skill sets and make new friends at St. Mary’s Summer Resort.
OUR OFFERINGS
Academic Prep Program (Junior Kindergarten – Grade 8): Grade-level camps prepare students for the coming fall. Each class is designed to engage and reinforce critical reading, writing and mathematical concepts.
Specialty Camps (Junior Kindergarten – Grade 8): Allow students to pursue new interests or further explore a passion area. We offer a wide range of camps from cooking to dance to Jedi Training Academy. Athletic Camps (Grades 1-8): Focus on fun, skills, technique, sportsmanship and overall game
strategies. Students can try a new sport or hone their skills on their favorite sport. These camps help prepare students for the upcoming season while keeping our athletes active over the summer.
Day Camps (Age 2 – Grade 5): Foster students’ emotional, social, physical, cognitive and creative growth in an age-appropriate, safe environment. Students will experience science, art, creative play and so much more all summer long! All of our camps are week-long sessions unless noted.

Lunch is included in all full day (9 am – 4 pm) and afternoon (Noon – 4 pm) camps, EEP through Grade 8.

Enroll online at smaa.org/summerresort. Campers are considered completely registered once the enrollment fees are paid. Please pay them at the time of registration to ensure a spot in the camp. The $40 registration fee is non-refundable. To receive a 10% discount, register before the early bird registration deadline on April 1, 2019.

ACADEMIC Junior Kindergarten Academic Prep
Dates: Four-Week Session (Weeks 2-5) (6/24 - 7/19; no classes 7/4 - 7/5) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $910 In preparation for the coming school year, rising Junior Kindergarten (JK) students are encouraged to participate in a unique three-hour unit of inquiry. JK students will participate in “Play with a Purpose” as they focus on the skills vital to success in the coming school year; including social and emotional development, language and literacy, cognitive development and motor skills. Each day begins with a warm welcome and large group activities. Students will learn routines and explore purposeful play in classroom centers. Additionally, there will be opportunities to engage in small group, hands-on activities and games while learning early literacy and math concepts. Our “Get Set For School Handwriting” curriculum will be practiced daily through a multisensory approach.
Kindergarten (K) Academic Prep
Dates: Four-Week Session (Weeks 2-5) (6/24 - 7/19; no classes 7/4 - 7/5) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $875 Through hands-on, engaging activities and lessons, incoming Kindergarten (K) students will practice and reinforce their knowledge of letters and sounds. They will also participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups to develop their reading skills. Through the use of the “Handwriting Without Tears” curriculum, students will practice proper letter formation. They will also be introduced to “Writing Workshop” and become authors of their own stories. Using the Lucy Calkins writing curriculum, students will also have the opportunity to write and illustrate narrative stories. K students will participate in differentiated math activities focusing on counting and writing, number concepts, patterning, graphing and story problems. In addition to academics, this class exposes students to different social and emotional experiences such as morning meetings and varied classroom routines. Students will have opportunities to explore and become familiar with different areas of Lower School at St. Mary’s. Most importantly, learners will develop new friendships which will give them confidence and a sense of belonging when they enter Kindergarten in the fall.

Mrs. Middleton Date: Weeks 1 and 7 (6/17 - 6/21, 8/5 - 8/9) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $265 In this engaging and entertaining class, students will pair daily cooking activities with exciting children’s books and dramatic play. Each day students will work together to prepare our daily creation. Campers will prepare a list of ingredients and determine the items needed to create the recipe. Students will learn new vocabulary and practice math skills while prepping, measuring, pouring, scooping and stirring. Our young chefs will be encouraged to be open-minded and take risks in taste testing or even feasting on our daily quest.

Fizzle, Bubble, Pop! World of Science
Mrs. Wallace Date: Week 6 (7/29 - 8/2) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $265 Children are natural scientists and learn from activity-based science that generates excitement and promotes inquiry. Throughout the week, campers will focus on unique experiments while exploring, predicting and investigating the wonders of science. They will engage in hands-on activities within the world of color, energy, movement and force. Students will have fun with testing simple chemical reactions using candy, vinegar, baking soda and much more.
Creative Movement and Gymnastics Combination Camp*
The WEBBY Dance Company Date: Week 6 (7/29 - 8/2) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $265 A professionally trained instructor from the WEBBY Dance Company will introduce students to basic ballet, tumbling, rhythm and movement using age appropriate music and fun props. Classes are structured to begin with stretching and warm-up exercises, followed by dance techniques across the floor, dancing to fun routines and tumbling with gymnastic equipment. Students will expand their imagination and creativity through a new theme each day. Students will also explore the jungle with “Monkey Mambo” and “Never Smile at a Crocodile,” kick up their heels down on the farm with the “Groovy Chicken” and “Boogie Woogie Piggy,” and swim under the sea at the “Codfish Ball” with the “Whales.”
Storyland Adventures Camp
Drama Kids, Inc. Date: Week 7 (8/5 - 8/9) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $265 Little actors will jump into scenes from many of their favorite stories, including Where the Wild Things Are and The Little Engine That Could. Trained drama teachers from Drama Kids International will teach dramatic movement, speech and imaginative acting. Students will engage in activities that the campers will use in their stories. Allow your student to unleash their creative energy and introduce them to the wonderful world of dramatic fun.
Superhero Hip Hop
Expressions Dance Date: Week 8 (8/12 - 8/16) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $265 Students will harness their inner superpowers with this high-energy dance camp! Each day, dancers will be introduced to basic hip hop dance movements through stories, crafts and non-stop fun. Students will learn basic body isolations, breakdance skills and rhythm. All superheroes have the opportunity to perform for their families on the last day of camp.
Spanish Under the Sun
Señora Boyd Date: Week 8 (8/12 - 8/16) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $265 Get ready for a fun and interactive Spanish camp under the sun! For one week students will have the opportunity, in Spanish, to explore the natural sciences and discover the life cycles of plants and different insects. Through a variety of hands-on activities our campers will develop a diverse Spanish vocabulary acquired through songs, dialogues, experiments, storytelling and arts and crafts.
Works of Art!
Mrs. Middleton Date: Week 9 (8/19 - 8/23) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $265 Throughout this camp, budding artists will be introduced to some of the best artists in the world. Students will learn about each artist – where he or she was from, what language they spoke, their famous works of art, etc. Children will discover art has many forms of expressions from painting, sculpting, photography and more. And better yet, our young artists will experience these many forms and find their favorite type of expression.

During this week of gymnastics and yoga we will focus on building students’ confidence while enhancing their physical, mental and social well-being. Campers will have fun as they learn age-appropriate gymnastic moves, breathing exercises and yoga poses while increasing flexibility, balance and coordination skills. This is a great camp for students who love to move!

Mrs. Yeargin Date: 4 Week Program (Weeks 2-5) (6/24 - 7/19; no classes 7/4 - 7/5) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $875 Incoming Grade 1 students will: • Participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups focused on increasing decoding, fluency and comprehension skills. • Practice reading aloud and listening to a variety of books, as well as building comprehension by making predictions, answering discussion questions and examining text features. • Develop their writing skills using the Lucy Calkins writing program. • Have the opportunity in Writer’s Workshop to explore and create various types of writing including narrative, information and opinion. • Build their independence as writers by learning how to plan and organize their writing across multiple pages, including interesting details, and using appropriate conventions such as punctuation. • Engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers to reinforce and build upon their growing knowledge of math. • Explore a variety of concepts at their individual level, including addition and subtraction, skip counting and comparing numbers. Practice checking for understanding while reading, backing up to reread and retelling a story’s important events in order to sharpen their comprehension skills. Fiction and non-fiction read alouds will be used daily to teach and model reading strategies. • Participate in Writer’s Workshop lessons based on Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study and will be exposed to narrative and information writing. Students will grow to love writing by being able to write about subjects that are important to them. • Practice rehearsing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing their writing pieces. Through the use of Handwriting Without Tears, incoming Grade 2 students will continue to practice proper letter formation. • Engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers focusing on the automaticity of basic addition and subtraction facts, real world problems, time and money. • Work at their individual levels, while interacting with others through instructional games and centers. The Everyday Math series and Singapore Math (Primary Mathematics) will be used to guide mathematical instruction.

Mrs. McDaniel Date: 4-Week Program (Weeks 2-5) (6/24 - 7/19; no classes 7/4 - 7/5) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $875 Incoming Grade 3 students will: • Focus on small differentiated guided reading groups, concentrating on developing individual skills and strategies to improve comprehension, fluency and inference. • Read a classic novel to explore the elements of character, setting and plot and further expand their vocabulary, prediction and summarizing skills.
• Experience reading different genres including poetry, plays, fiction and nonfiction. Our writing program will stimulate the student’s imagination and develop their organization, sentence fluency and word choice through the Lucy Calkins writing program. • Be given instruction on how to include sensory details, incorporate exciting word choice, elaborate and give their writing great voice. Conventional grammar will be taught with the rules of punctuation and verb tense, in addition to high frequency spelling words and cursive handwriting. • Experience and be taught differentiated mathematical concepts with addition, subtraction, multiplication, measurement, geometry, place value, fractions and more through the Everyday Mathematics program. • Reinforce these concepts through interactive and cooperative math games and manipulatives. The Building Math Fluency Program will be taught to emphasize computation strategies and improve skills in addition, subtraction and multiplication.
GRADES 4 AND 5 PREP
Mr. Chan Date: 4-Week Program (Weeks 2-5) (6/24 - 7/19; no classes 7/4 - 7/5) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $875 Incoming Grades 4 and 5 students will: • Read the novel, James and the Giant Peach, by Roald Dahl. When tackling this fantasy fiction text, students will learn how to think deeply about characters. When studying the characters, readers will learn alongside the main character, keeping track of the multiple problems he/she encounters throughout his/her quest. Additionally, questions posed such as, “What seems to be the big themes/ life lessons of this story?” will guide many of the novel discussions. • Craft reading responses in their journals of a few themes that emerged and justify their thinking by noting significant parts of the story that show how the life lessons were developed by the author. • Craft personal narratives with a growing emphasis on drafting and revision using the guidance of Lucy Calkins. • First develop strong story ideas, characters, and settings. Story arcs will be used to guide their scenes, ensuring trouble occurs within their plots and is resolved at the end of their pieces. The heart of the story will be developed and strengthened through the use of description, action, dialogue, and character thinking. During math, review the conceptual understanding that the base ten place value system extends infinitely in two directions. • Read and write whole numbers in the millions, order and compare whole numbers and decimals to two decimal places, and round whole numbers through the millions. • Work on solving multi-step number stories by using a variety of algorithms such as partial products and quotients. • Demonstrate their understanding of the standard algorithm for the addition and subtraction of multi-digit numbers. • Review the conceptual understanding that fractions, decimals and percentages are ways of representing whole-part relationships. Students will visually and numerically model equivalent fractions, mixed numbers and improper fractions. Students will work through tasks that review comparing/ordering fractions on a number line.

Date: 4-Week Program (Weeks 2-5) (6/24 - 7/19; no classes 7/4 - 7/5) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $875 Ms. Bucaro Over this four-week span Grade 6 students will: • Review concepts from the previous year and be introduced to some of the topics covered in Pre-Algebra. • Work on solving problems that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, fractions and decimals. • Work on solving problems with all operations involving integers, fractions and decimals. Solve problems using the order of operations and evaluate one-step equations. • Experience rich tasks from the Youcubed Summer Program, that promotes a positive math mindset. • Focus on problems and concepts in the Pre-Algebra summer math packet in order to prepare for the upcoming school year.
Language and Literature Prep
Ms. Galloway During this course, students entering Grade 6 will: • Read one novel (The Cay, by Theodore Taylor) together this summer. • Students will annotate the book and maintain a journal, in which students analyze plot, setting, characters and their development and theme. • Use strategies from the Lucy Calkins’ Units of Reading and Writing. Students will identify quotes to support a claim in a literary response paper. • Research and write an “isearch” paper, a lively report on a topic of their own choosing. The MLA format, used throughout Middle School and in most high schools, will be reinforced. • Be given excellent preparation for the rigorous reading and writing program at St. Mary’s. And through this course, students will complete the summer reading requirement.
Junior Model United Nations – Grades 3 – 5
Mr. Fragasso Date: Week 1 (6/17 - 6/21) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $240 Model United Nations (MUN) is a powerful experience for our young people to come together to listen, negotiate, collaborate and then offer solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems. As an International Baccalaureate World School, MUN is an important step toward achieving our vision of educating tomorrow’s and today’s global leaders. Camp participants will serve as delegates as we hold a session of the United Nations (U.N.). Delegates will learn about the U.N., discuss important current events and learn important communication tools such as how to do research, listen to others and to share their “voice.” During the week, students will participate in an engaging simulation about an important current event and become a delegate from their country of choice to the U.N. The week will culminate with a simulation activity and a global festival and food banquet. Participation in this camp will prepare students for participation in MUN conferences during the academic year at other schools and for future high school participation. Global topics under discussion: Prevention of the Spread of Nuclear Weapons, Whaling, Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Philippines Typhoon Recovery, Colonization of Space, Protection of Children and more.

Ms. Bucaro During this course, students entering Grades 7 and 8 will: • Review concepts from the previous year, and will be introduced to some of the topics covered in Algebra 1A and 1B. • Work on solving problems with all operations involving integers, fractions and decimals and review ratios, rates, proportions and percentages. • Evaluate numeric and algebraic expressions using the order of operations, including solving one-step equations, multi-step equations and inequalities. • Work on graphing and writing linear equations and using slope formula to calculate the slope of a line. • Experience rich tasks from the Youcubed Summer Program, that promote a positive math mindset. • Focus on problems and concepts in the Algebra 1A or Algebra 1B summer math packet in order to prepare for the upcoming school year.

Lego Animation – Grades 2 – 5
Mr. Barrett Date: Week 1 (6/17 - 6/21) Time: 9 am – Noon Fee: $240 Do you love animated movies? This is the class for you! Students will learn basic animation skills through a series of guided challenges using Legos as the characters. Once students have progressed through the challenges, the class will culminate with students writing and producing a short animated film.
Anime, Cartooning, & Comic Creation – Grades 1 – 6
Parker-Anderson Date: Week 1 (6/17 - 6/21) Time: Noon – 4 pm Fee: $300 Cartooning is a great way to learn how to sketch, create interesting stories and develop character dialogs. Students will learn how to create their own characters from conception to completion as well as popular characters from a variety of cartoons, comics and anime.

Speech and Debate – Grades 5 – 8
Mr. Camargo Date: Week 1 (6/17 - 6/21) Time: Noon – 4 pm Fee: $275 Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears! Want to know how to give a speech that would move people or be able to engage in any debate with confidence, poise, and command attention? Then this course will give you the tools to be able to deliver any speech or presentation that will leave an impressionable impact with your audience be it teachers that are grading you or the public! Public Speaking is a course that increases students’ awareness of the many types of public communication from interpersonal verbal communication to formal speech presentations and debates. Students research and practice the elements of speech such as tone, volume, pitch and tempo through engaging activities such as reciting Shakespeare, to analyzing a St. Mary’s teacher/staff/administrator giving a speech, to analyzing TED Talks. They will then hone their public speaking skills to deliver a teen TED-Ed worthy presentation.
LEGO Mindstorm – Grades 3 – 6
Mr. Barrett Date: Week 1 (6/17 - 6/21) Time: Noon – 4 pm Fee: $275 Are you ready for the world of Lego Mindstorms? In this class, students will build and program Lego Mindstorm EV3 robots. This camp is a great next step from Lego WeDo as well as for complete beginners. Students will face many fun challenges that will build their critical thinking and creativity.
Kids in the Kitchen – French Cuisine – Grades 1 – 8
Ms. Forte Date: Week 1 (6/17 - 6/21) Time: 9 am – 4 pm Fee: $405 During this fun and interactive week-long program, students will learn to cook delectable French dishes, such as quiche, crêpes, French toast, croque-monsieur, ratatouille, sandwiches with baguettes and more. On the last day, family and friends are invited to our café to enjoy what we made. Bon appétit!

We will be cutting, sawing, hammering, gluing, festooning, bisqueting and many other woodworking terms that you have never heard of before. Let’s get dirty and make things out of wood. CSI Forensic Science – Grades 1 – 4
Ms. Red Date: Week 2 (6/24 - 6/28) Time: Noon – 4 pm Fee: $275 Do you like solving mysteries? CSI: Forensic Science involves just that. Can you crack the case by investigating a crime scene? Get a taste of what it is like to be a forensic scientist by using tools such as magnifying lenses and microscopes to get a closer look at the evidence left behind at the scene of a crime. Crime scene investigators also use math to help analyze evidence such as measuring the length of footprints to determine a person’s relative height. Investigators will spend each day using critical thinking skills as they practice analyzing evidence such as fingerprints, footprints, lip prints, handwriting, mystery substances and more. CSI incorporates many different fields of science including chemistry. Students will use chemistry to find the pH of a mystery substance to help identify a substance. Investigators will also use chromatography to separate the mixtures of color in different markers/pens when analyzing writing samples. Digital crime scenes will help students prepare for any “suspicious activity” that might take place on campus.

Mr. Kearney Date: Week 2 (6/24 - 6/28) Time: Noon – 4 pm Fee: $275 During this engaging, interactive week, students will participate in a mock trial, a simulation of a real courtroom trial. We’ll start by learning how a trial works and the roles of the attorneys and witnesses, before dividing into teams and taking on a real case. Students will play those roles in an unscripted trial that is both intense and exciting. This is an outstanding activity for students interested in law, debate, public speaking, working in teams, thinking on their feet and competition. It also builds students’ writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills as well as their confidence.
Hamlet – Grades 3 – 8
Ms. Miller Date: Week 2 (6/24 - 6/28) Time: Noon – 4 pm Fee: $275 Act and explore the stories, scenes and soliloquies of the Bard’s masterpiece “Hamlet” with Shakespearience! Director, Kirsten Miller. Young artists will have an in-depth and compelling view of Shakespeare’s text. Readers will learn how to find the story within the text and bring the characters to life. Improvisation and games are played to support stagecraft and teamwork. Students examine the most important scenes and soliloquies in Hamlet to learn how to breakdown meaning and mood of Shakespeare’s words. The final class culminates with a presentation of the week’s work. Family and friends are invited to watch The “Hamlet” Salon and celebrate the young artists’ personalization and interpretation of Shakespeare’s most famous play!

Our camp is based on the works of Jo Boaler and Cathy Williams of Youcubed at Stanford University. Put on your math goggles and look at math fluency in a different way. We will view math tasks with an open lens and share different ideas, methods and perspectives. Creativity is valued and modeled. This is a risk-taking and open-minded environment. We will introduce students to computation strategies that help them approach math in a multiple of successful ways. Students will work hard to gain automaticity at their level in addition, subtraction and/ or multiplication. Students will work independently, and in small groups, to focus on their individual needs. Painting Party – Grades 1 – 8
Ms. Kane Date: Week 4 (7/8 - 7/12) Time (2): 9 am – 4 pm or Noon – 4 pm Fee: $405 (Full Day) or $275 (Half-Day) In this workshop, students will unleash their artistic spirit as they explore four different painting techniques representative of four periods during the timeline of art history, with a contemporary twist! Beginning with the early Renaissance, students will design and paint their own frescoes, either traditional or contemporary-themed pieces using watercolor on a plaster-based ground. Students will go onto make yarn/acrylic paintings and create vividly colored, simply designed, works of art influenced by 1940s expressionist artist Georges Rouault. Artists will be introduced to post-impressionist painter Paul Gauguin where students will use casein, a milk-based paint, to produce vividly colored pieces. We will then make a creation of dreamlike, Kandinsky-style paintings on canvas! Each painting medium lends itself easily to a traditional or more abstract theme. Students in all grade levels who love to paint will be encouraged to joyously explore themes at their own pace in keeping with their unique levels of ability.

Learn efficient and effective approaches to studying, including organizing your calendar, notetaking, outlining, drafting, close reading and memorizing. Chefs will spend the week learning to prepare classic Italian dishes like caprese salad, lasagna, chicken cacciatore, eggplant and chicken parmiggiano and many more! Students will make their own pasta, ciabatta bread, sauces and of course, pizza! They will also explore Italian desserts like tiramisu, gelato and cannoli. This course will help students learn about the Italian language and culture while they prepare Italian food. At the end of the week, the class will invite their friends and family to the Ristorante Santa Maria so everyone can enjoy a meal together.
WEEK 5: July 15-19 Robot Building Workshop – Grades 1 – 5

We will challenge students’ creativity and hone fine motor skills while completing intricate motorized robots. Students will participate in group robotics challenges using a variety of materials. Based on availability, students will build both in class and take-home robots including the Insectoid Robot, the Brush Robot Duck and the Table Top Robot.

Modern Impressionist Expression – Grades 1 – 8
Ms. Kane Date: Week 5 (7/15 - 7/19) Time (2): 9 am – 4 pm or Noon – 4 pm Fee: $405 (Full Day) or $275 (Half-Day) Paint like a contemporary Impressionist! At times using portable easels and palettes, supervised students will work at their own paces, both inside the art studio and outdoors, to fully experience the feeling of painting “en plein air.” Students will create a series of framable pieces on canvas and durable paper while experimenting with an assortment of art materials used by the Impressionists. Artists will be encouraged to move away from depictions of idealized forms and perfect symmetry and will concentrate on looking at the world around them in its delightful imperfection. As inspiration, students will be introduced to the works of successful contemporary local artists including Calvin Liang (Newport Beach), Jeff Yeomans (San Diego) and Wendy Wirth (Laguna Niguel; Crystal Cove), as well as original French and California Impressionists Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, Mary Cassatt, Guy Rose and William Wendt.

As an International Baccalaureate World School, MUN is an important step toward achieving our vision of educating tomorrow’s and today’s global leaders. Camp participants will serve as delegates as we hold a session of the United Nations (U.N.). Delegates will learn about the U.N., discuss important current events and learn important communication tools such as how to do research, listen to others and to share their “voice.” During the week, students will participate in an engaging simulation about an important current event and become a delegate from their country of choice to the U.N. The week will culminate with a simulation activity and a global festival and food banquet. Participation in this camp will prepare students for participation in MUN conferences during the academic year at other schools and for future high school participation.
