ANNUAL REPORT 2015-16

DEAR ST. MARY’S COMMUNITY, At St. Mary’s we are fortunate to enjoy a strong sense of community, which is highlighted by your outstanding engagement and generous philanthropy. Our community embraces and relies upon parent involvement and financial support for the success of our school’s programs and events. It is a partnership and we deeply appreciate your commitment to the school. Last year we unveiled our four-year Strategic Plan and are pleased to share with you an update on these initiatives. With your commitment to our common goals we are moving forward with great success. We are truly grateful for your support and partnership. Through this Annual Report, we take an opportunity to acknowledge and thank all of our parents, faculty, staff, parents of alumni, alumni, grandparents, corporations, foundations and friends for their financial support and their willingness to give of their time. You are making a significant impact on our school today and in the years to come. The 2015-16 Annual Fund – Around the World in 80 Days – generated a record $610,000 in pledges and contributions for St. Mary’s School. Your gifts allowed us to enhance programs throughout all areas of our school – those that make a difference in the educational experience for each and every student. Our combined fundraising efforts (Gala, Golf, Fund-A-Need and Other Gifts) brings our total philanthropic gifts to $1,180,000. In 2015-2016 your support helped to: • Complete the Innovative Spaces Campaign including the opening of the new IB Hub • Provide new innovative classroom furniture in Lower and Middle School • Provide outdoor education space for EEP • Broaden the reach and impact of our professional development • Offer more students financial aid in order to attend St. Mary’s • Support enhancements to our IB curriculum Thank you again for making a difference in the lives of our students and the future of our school. Sincerely,

Sharon Taylor Head of School

IMPLEMENTING ST. MARY’S STRATEGIC PLAN The St. Mary’s administration, faculty, and staff take our mission, and our students’ education, seriously. We are committed to making consistent advancements to realize our common goals. Last spring, St. Mary’s unveiled its 2016-2019 Strategic Plan, including the six Pillars of Excellence that guide our vision. Within a few short months, we’ve made significant progress toward fulfilling each of our six Pillars. We are excited to update you on our ongoing efforts to maintain that standard of excellence throughout our school.

A TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR OUR STUDENTS

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING At the foundation of an IB education is intellectual curiosity. For students to be intellectually curious, they must be engaged and actively participate in their own education. Key to that component is project-based learning.

This year, we are thrilled to announce the unveiling the Prosthetic Hand Challenge. Partnering with The e-NABLE Community, and guided by Kari Greenfield (technology integration specialist) and Katie Hobbins (middle school science teacher), our Grade 8 students will use Google SketchBook to design prosthetic hands, 3D printers to manufacture the parts, and will then be assigned to simple machines in their science courses to complete the challenge. Their work will be overseen by masters students in the Orthotics and Prosthetics Department of Loma Linda University. The hands will be shipped to children or adults in need of a prosthesis. Nothing gives students greater satisfaction than witnessing the practical application of their efforts. Helping those in need, and serving the community in a meaningful capacity, brings education to life.

Grade 8 students will submit their work to ShakeMeUp!, an international film festival hosted by the Prague Shakespeare Company, allowing their work to be judged on an international stage.

These projects require collaboration, higher order thinking, problem solving, creative writing, elegant design, and more. The presentations are often not just local, but global. Their classroom expands far beyond the four walls of the school. Their audience stretches across continents. Their learning experience is transformed.

FLIPPED CLASSROOMS St. Mary’s strongest asset is its faculty. To maximize their impact on our student body, and to support our project-based curriculum, St. Mary’s has implemented the flipped classroom in our pre-algebra curriculum to represent our commitment to cutting-edge instruction. In a conventional classroom, students spend most of their time listening to lectures. In a flipped classroom, however, students watch pre-recorded podcasts at home. These lectures showcase the concepts and skills that will be taught the following day. Each podcast concludes with a quiz that students take prior to attending class. Instructors can then see where misconceptions, errors, and gaps lie in the students’ understanding. This, in turn, permits teachers to devote their time and attention to projects, exercises, and discussion groups, or to focus on problematic areas of comprehension. By absorbing basic principles at home, class time is reserved for deeper discussions, focused inquiries, and engaged thinking. Under the leadership of Nancy Qushair, Mathematics Department Chair and middle school mathematics teacher, a committee was formed to vet the efficacy of the flipped classroom. St. Mary’s consulted with Sage Hill High School, educators and administrators, observed classrooms, and reviewed academic resources that all supported the effectiveness of this approach. We are confident this shift in instruction will serve the needs of our student body and staff, and will reflect the kind of bold innovative curriculum that sets St. Mary’s apart. REIMAGINED SCHEDULE A cutting edge education requires adaptability. The St. Mary’s curriculum reflects that principle. This year, Middle School students enjoy a six-day schedule, freeing them from the constraints of the traditional five-day workweek. This reimagined schedule affords students fewer classes each day, with longer periods to delve deeper into a subject matter, fostering collaboration, inquiry, and reflection. It also provides ample cushion in the student’s schedule to pursue individual interests and passions. Community Time enables students to self-direct their learning, allowing their education to be more meaningful and personal. All of these approaches represent a positive shift in our paradigm. These approaches allow students a more personal and active role in their own education, make their experience at St. Mary’s more meaningful, and impress upon them that learning is a lifelong pursuit.

Bold, innovative curriculum sets St. Mary’s apart. 6

II.

AN INNOVATIVE CAMPUS THAT IS FLEXIBLE, SAFE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE

This fall, students entered classrooms that looked and felt very different from last year. The St. Mary’s Fund-A-Need program financed the installation of modular furniture in each of our classrooms. This equipment allows students the flexibility to learn in an environment tailored to their comfort and their ever-changing experiential needs. Desks can be reconfigured to promote collaboration or independence, as required. Chairs can be modified to an individual’s learning style, enabling a child mobility and movement if needed. Our spaces reflect our philosophy. They are inviting, engaging, and multifunctional. They support our commitment to the whole child, and adapt to fit each child. As we incorporate art and design into our STEAM curriculum, it is important for our classrooms to mirror that focus with fun and functional furniture.

7

III. A BROAD EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM THAT DEVELOPS THE WHOLE CHILD THE ST. MARY’S MINDSET: TURNING WEAKNESS INTO STRENGTH. Our faculty recognizes the danger in labeling students or, worse yet, the risk that they’ll label themselves, as “good” or “bad” at a particular subject. If students identify as “not a math person,” the ramifications can follow them a lifetime. Nancy Qushair recently integrated the Stanford Center for Professional Development course, How to Learn Math for Teachers, lead by Carol Dweck and Jo Boaler, into the St. Mary’s math curriculum. Instead of students telling themselves, “I’m not a math person,” they’re encouraged to change their internal mindset to, “I’m not a math person yet.” Students learn that productive exertion is valuable. “Struggle makes your brain grow,” is the message teachers must send to their students. This shift in mindset allows students to focus on learning, instead of on grades. It empowers them to take risks, and see challenges as opportunities instead of obstacles. THE PROOF OF OUR SUCCESS. The soon to be released 2016-17 Academic Report reflects the success of St. Mary’s efforts to educate and develop the whole child. Our graduates are accepted into top-tier high schools around Orange County, and go on to top-tier universities around the state, the country, and—in some cases—the world. They test well into honors programs across disciplines, including English, math, biology, and secondary languages. Our 2016 graduates matriculated at the following schools:.

HIGH SCHOOL Beyond that, St. Mary’s received very strong assessments in our math scores this year, placing well above the national norm for independent institutions around the United States in grades 3 through 8 (the national average is 560 and St. Mary’s students scored 585). Our scores across all assessed disciplines— reading, language, and math—have steadily increased over the last three years, including a significant increase in reading scores (over 7%). These findings indicate that St. Mary’s is not only meeting its goal of being a leading Orange County institution, but is exceeding it.

IV. A PREMIER INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) PROGRAMME RAISING GLOBAL CITIZENS. As an IB World School, St. Mary’s commits to educating our students not only about the planet they will inherit, but the people with whom they will share it. Last year, our 4th grade students partnered with students in Sweden through the PEAK Program (Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids). Together, the students studied the sources of clothing and materials. They developed strong relationships with their Swedish partners, writing letters and utilizing Google forums to conduct research in tandem. We are excited to announce the continuation of that successful program into this coming school year. Furthermore, our 3rd grade students will be studying water conservation and the importance of access to clean drinking water. St. Mary’s will partner with schools around the world, building water filtration systems together in their science classes. They will learn the chemistry underlying water pollution and engage in filtration experiments, all the while forming bonds with students abroad. They will film themselves talking to their global partners, reaching joint solutions to a widespread problem. IB EVALUATION PROCESS. In 2007, St. Mary’s was accredited as an IB World School. Since then, the school has sustained a close relationship, and ongoing dialogue, with the IB Association. It is our goal to make continuous and significant improvements in our program consistent with the rigorous IB standards to which we adhere. Every five years, as part of the evaluation process, the IB Association reassesses our curriculum, reviews our programs, and ensures that every aspect of our institution reflects the tenets and principles of an IB education. As part of that evaluation process, both the Primary Years Programme and the Middle Years Programme have been engaged in a year-long self-study. This fall, as the culmination of that process, two teams of IB educators visited our campus to evaluate our current curriculum. They assessed our strengths and successes, were complimentary of our current practices, and will make recommendations on how to expand our programs further.

9

V.

EXCEPTIONAL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR OUR FACULTY AND STAFF

A central tenant of an IB education is that learning is a lifelong pursuit. Our teachers are wonderful models of that behavior, and our administration supports it. St. Mary’s is committed to educating not only our students, but also our faculty. Although our teachers have outstanding talents as natural educators, their ongoing ability to deliver a superior education requires their own continuing education.

In the past two years, we are pleased to report 100 % of our faculty participated in some form of ongoing educational training. Twenty of our teachers attended training specific to the IB curriculum, focusing on inquirybased learning. They focused on how best to cultivate global citizens who are critical thinkers, collaborative citizens, and self-driven individuals. Six faculty members engaged in programs dedicated to the responsive classroom. This is a research-based approach to teaching students in kindergarten through 8th grade that emphasizes the link between academic success and social emotional learning. It incorporates strategies to engage students and to help promote a healthy learning environment, centered around community building, mutual respect and intrinsic motivation. Additionally, many faculty attended subject specific workshops in individual disciplines. These included: The Lucy Calkins Writing Project, the NCTM mathematics conference, Handwriting Without Tears, The American Counsel on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, The Writing Project Conference, and CUE Technology conference. Several teachers reported transformative learning experiences of their own, drawing strength from their successful collaboration with other educators and excited to bring cutting-edge teaching techniques back to their classrooms this fall. Each of them benefited from the synergy of talented instructors engaging in a common purpose. Likewise, the whole of our academic community benefits from their newfound knowledge.

VI. A CONTINUED SENSE OF COMMUNITY AMONG STUDENTS, FAMILIES, FACULTY AND STAFF In addition to being a premier academic institution, St. Mary’s takes pride in fostering a strong, cohesive community. We are a community not only of administrators, faculty, students and staff, but also parents who actively participate as leaders and collaborators. St. Mary’s is committed to solidifying and strengthening the role of our parents, and even grandparents, in our institutional dialogue. This year we look forward to hosting a middle school Grandparents Family Day. Recognizing the importance of generational support and family commitment to education, we welcome our grandparents on campus. Furthermore, St. Mary’s believes in the importance of diversity and the significance of religion to provide a strong, stable environment that emphasizes compassion and empathy. An IB education seeks to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To that end, we have created a committee composed of a representative group of the St. Mary’s community to evaluate our campus culture. The committee has also conducted a number of faculty and parent focus groups to evaluate our campus culture. Those results and conversations are now being analyzed to integrate into the community.

IB HUB GRAND OPENING MAY, 2016 In May, St. Mary’s unveiled the IB Hub with a community grand opening, complete with ribbon cutting. The new IB Hub is best described as the library of the future. Once hushed, sterile, and solitary, the library is now a bright, colorful gathering place that encourages the dynamic collaboration of ideas. The space itself tells students there are different ways to approach old ideas, common problems can be tackled with new solutions. From modular furniture to a textured computer-generated 3D wall lit by changing LED lighting, students are inspired to think differently. Travel trunks line one wall, containing objects from countries around the world. The Hub’s ceiling maps the world in full-color panels, reminding St. Mary’s students to always remain globally minded. Surrounding students with creative solutions allows them to think creatively about solutions of their own.

GALA On March 19, 2016, our community joined together for a Mad Men inspired Gala at the Laguna Cliffs Resort. The urbane and chic theme brought an element of excitement and energy to our gala as we donned our wing tips, pearls and fedoras for a night of style, community, and fun. Under the leadership of event co-chairs, Marni Grass and Jennifer Whitehead, our community arrived to swanky jazz stylings provided by our very own, David Miller and his trio. Cocktails and music were enjoyed on the outdoor courtyard as guests perused the silent auction items. At dinner time guests were invited into a beautifully decorated ballroom for the fundraising presentations, dinner and then they danced the night away to DJ Derek Montoya. The evening was a tremendous success on all fronts, including the goal of raising funds for St. Mary’s innovative programs and spaces. We raised an impressive $356,000 from Fund-A-Need, live and silent auctions, sponsors and ticket sales. As a result, our classrooms have been upgraded with innovative and configurable furniture that better suits the multiple needs of students and our project-based environment. A special thanks to our premier sponsor, Newport Beach Dermatology and Plastic Surgery as well as the many individuals and companies who contributed to the success of this year’s Gala.

FUND-A-NEED CREATING DYNAMIC AND FLEXIBLE CLASSROOMS The highlight of the 2016 Gala was the special Fund-A-Need portion of the evening where we raised $174,000 through the support of our generous community. After record-breaking support from our families during the 2015 Gala to transform the library into the vibrant IB Hub, this year we continued to raise funds for the Innovative Spaces Campaign. The goal this year was to provide dynamic and flexible furniture and enhanced interactive spaces, both indoors and outdoors. With the additional financial commitment from the school to classroom furniture, we were able to have the furniture and equipment in place for the 2016-2017 school year.

FLEXIBLE LOWER SCHOOL & MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASSROOMS While we have could easily replace the old classroom furniture with the same traditional furniture, we were committed to providing furniture and classroom tools that maximize innovation and flexibility. We replaced 957 classroom chairs with new chairs that support our students’ varying needs. The new chairs do not restrict students, but move with their movements. Classrooms were also equipped with 700 new flexible ergonomic desks and tables. The shaped desks fit together in a variety of configurations to meet differing classroom needs. In addition, two standing desks were added to each Kindergarten through Grade 5 classroom. Dynamic flipper tables, already installed in the innovation labs, were added to many Middle School classrooms to provide flexibility. Along with the addition of sliding whiteboards in two Middle School classrooms. The old desks and chairs were donated and sold to other schools and educational organizations.

DYNAMIC EEP OUTDOOR CLASSROOM To support our littlest students, we transformed the entire outdoor areas. From the garden to the STEAM center, there are flexible and interactive spaces that enhance the EEP program. As you enter the gates you will see the students playing at the new outdoor STEM area with the large wooden blocks and cascade water play area. The EEP Garden was completely renovated into multiple spaces which includes a Zen garden, mud kitchen, grass plot for cutting, compost and work area and six planting plots. At the center of the garden is the new pebble harp. Throughout the playground there are a variety of musical instruments including xylophones and drums, sparking the musical interest of all the students. In addition, the outdoor space will soon feature a large, mobile magnetic wall with ramps for hands-on, open-ended experiences with water, sand, and balls. No longer is this just an EEP Playground but truly an EEP Outdoor Classroom full of areas for students to explore and learn.
