ST. MARY’S

REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY

2020-2021

Dear St. Mary’s Community

We will be forever grateful to our community and all their efforts to support St. Mary’s in 2020-2021. This past school year challenged our faculty and staff in ways we never thought possible. Our students and parents too were faced with many obstacles. Despite the hurdles in front of us, we all persevered. Grounded in our mission: world-sized hearts and world-class minds, we faced each day with gratitude and grace. We all felt the absence of our parents being able to physically be on campus, volunteer in the classroom and engage in beloved events. However, our community pivoted and found other ways to support and remain connected to St. Mary’s. Our St. Mary’s Fund achieved record-breaking funds and participation rates. Parents who had never stepped foot on our campus, donated to the St. Mary’s Fund. This support is inspiring and so meaningful. Once again, our community rallied together in the spring, when we launched our first ever St. Mary’s Scholar Program. Because of your generosity, we were able to bring another scholar to our school. A child who would never have had the opportunity to experience St. Mary’s, is here on campus thriving and growing as a Falcon. This overwhelming response from our community has been felt by every student. All of your donations benefit every child on campus. From our PTF Board to the St. Mary’s Fund committee, all of your school spirit and fundraising efforts are necessary for us to provide an extraordinary St. Mary’s education. Thank you for continuing to not only support, but invest in our students, faculty, curriculum and campus. We are grateful for your kindness and generosity. Warmly,

Sharon Taylor Serena Benson Head of School

St. Mary’s Fund Record-Breaking Giving!

Thank you to our St. Mary’s Fund Committee Catherine and Matt Anderson

THANK YOU!

Committee Co-Chairs

On behalf of all our current and future students, thank you to everyone who generously donated to our record-breaking 2020-2021 St. Mary’s Fund. The St. Mary’s Fund made a world of difference for our students, faculty and programs by raising $884,000 — more than ever before. A list of all donors can be found at www.smaa.org/smf2021.

Chair, Board of Trustees

St. Mary’s offers a transformative educational experience for all our students who cannot be funded through tuition alone. The St. Mary’s Fund allows us to do even more and grow stronger as a school. Each year we ask parents to partner with a gift to the St. Mary’s Fund. These gifts help support new programs and initiatives, send our faculty and staff to professional development workshops, keep class sizes small and so much more — making a meaningful difference in each child’s education every day. More importantly, this year the St. Mary’s Fund supported all the efforts made to keep school open safely for all our students and faculty who cultivate world-sized hearts and world-class minds day in and day out.

PAY IT FORWARD CIRCLE

The Thompson Family Gives Foundational Gift to St. Mary’s School. A great school never stands still and constantly strives to be better. St. Mary’s is proud to be in the planning phase to build a state-of-the-art Early Education Center and Design Center to complete our campus master plan. Over the first 25 years of our school’s history, our program has taken shape. Today it is defined by two complementary elements — the International Baccalaureate program and the Design Thinking methodology. Under these philosophies, we nurture students who can thrive in a fastchanging world. The Design Your Future campaign seeks to invest in our campus environment, our innovative curriculum and our school community. These investments are vital to our children’s development and to the school’s future. The Thompson Family has generously laid the foundation for this exciting campaign with a hallmark gift. The new Thompson Family Early Education Center will truly transform the future of St. Mary’s. The new facilities represent enhanced opportunities for our students to learn, grow and explore. We can’t thank the Thompson Family enough for leading the community with this impactful gift.

ST. MARY’S COMMUNITY SUPPORTS SCHOLAR PROGRAM Our mission is to cultivate all our students’ worldsized hearts and world-class minds. Because of this, St. Mary’s is more than its curriculum and facilities. A major tenet of St. Mary’s education is our community. We value and encourage inclusiveness and believe a diverse community equals a stronger one. To wholly bring diversity and inclusivity to our school, we established the St. Mary’s Scholar Program. This program provides full-tuition scholarships to qualified students and funds and supports their engagement in student life. Through these scholarships, not only will the life of these children and their families be changed, but also the entire St. Mary’s community will be changed for the better.

Enhancing Learning Through Diversity

The goal of the St. Mary’s Scholar Program is to further develop a learning environment that prepares students to thrive within a diverse, interconnected world. This program enables us to provide our students with opportunities to learn from and build relationships with people whose experiences, beliefs and perspectives may be different from their own.

We currently have three outstanding students enrolled and supported by the St. Mary’s Scholar Program. We are fortunate that a very generous St. Mary’s family helped start our program by underwriting a student’s entire Middle School experience. St. Mary’s launched this program this past spring and raised more than $112,000 thanks to the generosity of our community. These contributions in conjunction with funds provided by the school contributed to our ability to enroll an additional student in St. Mary’s under the Scholar Program. Thank you to everyone who has supported this effort. While we launched the St. Mary’s Scholar Program this past spring, we are fully committed to making this a continual giving opportunity for families. If you would like to learn more about or contribute to this program, please contact Christine Downie, Director of Development at christine.downie@smaa.org or 949-448-9027 x324.

One of St. Mary’s strengths is a continued sense of community among students, families, faculty and staff. We foster an inclusive campus culture, which supports and encourages family engagement. Our students, as well as our IB curriculum, benefit when our parents are actively involved in school and community-based activities and events. Our Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) is the volunteer organization that highlights the value placed on community at St. Mary’s. Our PTF provides and builds experiences through all-school events, service learning and parent education. There are many ways to support our children and impact St. Mary’s with your time and talents. Participating in these activities makes your St. Mary’s journey that much more rewarding and contributes to the success of our school.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Our volunteer opportunities are found on the PTF section of the Parent Resource Boards and at www.smaa.org/volunteer.

The St. Mary’s Fund is the single most important philanthropic priority for our school. This fund supports our community by providing substantial financial support, separate of tuition, to develop and advance our programs. Contributions to the St. Mary’s Fund are directed toward our school’s highest priorities while augmenting the difference between tuition and necessary programming to cultivate world-sized hearts and worldclass minds. This funding is imperative to the health of our school. Healthy funds represent the difference between a solid education and a truly exemplary one, where innovative ideas and state-of-the-art resources for teaching and learning practices are not held back by operating budget constraints. Every gift, of any size, has a direct impact on all St. Mary’s School students.

Like tuition, the St. Mary’s Fund supports the daily operations of our school. Your donation supports low student-to-faculty ratios and our ability to hire exceptional faculty to carry out our mission of developing world-sized hearts and world-class minds. Unlike tuition, gifts to the St. Mary’s Fund are tax deductible. St. Mary’s relies on contributions to the St. Mary’s Fund every year from Trustees, parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty and staff. It is our expectation that 100% of our families will partner with us in providing our students with an exceptional educational experience by contributing to the St. Mary’s Fund. How much each family contributes is a personal decision. Our hope is that every family is able to be as generous as possible given their financial circumstances. Gifts range from under $1,000 to over $25,000. Every gift, of any size, has a direct impact on all St. Mary’s School students.
