ST. MARY’S REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2016-2017 1

DEAR ST. MARY’S COMMUNITY, It is with sincere gratitude and recognition that we present our 2016-2017 Annual Report. We are grateful for this amazing community of committed and generous individuals who continue to support our children and their education. We recognize and are appreciative of the countless hours of service and parent involvement crucial to the success of our school’s programs and events. You have made a deep impact and a lasting investment in our school and our community. Thanks to the generous support of our parents, faculty, staff, parents of alumni, grandparents, corporations, foundations and friends, we are thrilled to report that the 2016-2017 St. Mary’s Annual Fund generated a record $654,000, exceeding our goal by over $25,000. Your Annual Fund gifts this past year allowed us to enhance the program in many unique and meaningful ways. Thanks to your generosity, we are able to provide a truly exemplary experience for all students. Our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) programs have reached new heights this year as we have fully integrated projects at all grade levels. We have consistently been able to enhance and further develop our IB Programme, which defines and guides the learning experiences at St. Mary’s. It is through these funds that we are able to enrich the experience for every student. In addition, at our Gala, the gifts to the Fund-A-Need provided exceptional, expert training for our teachers as well as a beautiful new play structure for our Early Education students. Whether you gave to the Annual Fund, attended the Gala, played golf or supported the school in some other way, we truly thank you. Our combined fundraising efforts raised a total $1,128,000. Fundraising efforts are not the only form of support to celebrate. Our community went above and beyond through involvement in and support of our many events throughout the year. Our parent volunteers spent hundreds of hours giving back to the St. Mary’s Community. Events such as the Founder’s Family Fun Day, the FalconBall Blast, the Annual Gala, the Golf Tournament and classroom and campus assistance not only benefit the school, but elevate the entire community. Throughout this report, our hope is to honor you, our loyal and generous donors. Thank you for making a world of difference. Sincerely,

Sharon Taylor

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT— Dreams inspire us. They encourage us to be better; to want more for ourselves

and our students. The St. Mary’s Fund-a-Need helps us achieve our dreams every year. This year, part of the money raised allowed our faculty to further develop the transformative learning experiences our students encounter every day. By investing in our teachers, you invested in our students. Each year, our teachers have opportunities to participate in a variety of learning experiences that inspire them to create and grow. When a faculty

member attends a conference or workshop, the impact is immediate on both the teacher and her students. But the reality is that this impact is limited and confined to one or two classrooms and a small group of students. This year, we had the chance to do better. We had the power to create revolutionary change throughout the entire school, by creating a common language and common goals. This change began last spring in the Lower School when the teachers attended an on-site writing workshop led by Chara Rodrigues, an expert from the Lucy Calkins Teachers College Reading and Writing Project.

Each year, our teachers have opportunities to participate in a variety of learning experiences that inspire them to create and grow. 4

During this session, teachers explored the essentials of writing instruction and how to utilize conferences to differentiate instruction and set goals. “Being surrounded by our peers added a new dimension to the learning. As a faculty, we were hearing the ideas together, creating a united vision,” explains Elizabeth Tierney, Lower School Language Arts support teacher. This vision among like-minded teachers is crucial for transformative change. The synergy it creates promotes excitement and rapid movement. The faculty recognize they are not only responsible for their students but to the success of every child in the school. “When we meet to plan writing instruction, we talk about the specific needs of our students, not just the

language. Working with Amber Searles, a program developer for Responsive Classroom–an evidence-based approach to teaching that focuses on the strong link between academic success and social-emotional learning - the faculty had the opportunity to spend the day as students, learning from and with one another. They explored developmental levels and needs that are unique to Middle School students; participated in interactive learning structures used to make lessons more engaging; and discussed the importance of establishing a calm, orderly and safe environment for learning. “There is great energy when we come together as a faculty,” explains Middle School Assistant Principal Señor Valdez. “Learning the Responsive Classroom strategies equipped us with the kind of knowledge and tools that make us better educators when it comes to best classroom practices. It has been instrumental in positively shaping and affecting our school community to be the unique place that we value and love.” 5

LET’S PLAY! Building upon the amazing STEM and musical instruments that were added to the EEP outdoor classroom in 2016, contributions made to the FundA-Need in 2017 helped to replace the EEP play equipment with a new structure. The new play structure, which was opened to eager students on September 15, 2017, is both safe for our 2-year-olds and challenging for our 5-year-olds. This structure includes a new Intensity Physical Education Curriculum that will continue to innovate the program our teachers provide to our youngest students while addressing the importance of fine motor, gross motor and core strength. This fusion of traditional and active-based play serves to create an environment where everyone can play and grow together and will transform the EEP. This latest campus enhancement provides experiences in the outdoor classroom that will ignite physical, cognitive, social and imaginative development for all our EEP students. A special thank you to all the donors

GOLF CLASSIC The St. Mary’s Golf Classic was once again held at the picturesque Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club. Co-Chairs Don Keena and Michael Brewer worked closely with our Development Office to deliver a fun and festive day, complete with global-themed holes that provided food and drink for our 75 golfers. At the completion of the course, while foursomes anxiously awaited their standings, all golfers enjoyed a cocktail hour and buffet dinner in celebration of the St. Mary’s community. GALA Inspire: to fill someone with the ability to cause something to happen. In 2017, our community joined together for the Inspire Gala at the Balboa Bay Resort. Under the direction of Gala Chair Jennifer Whitehead, the community was met with a signature drink and soft jazz music from our own music instructor, David Miller. The beautiful evening was enhanced with amazing décor and excitement from our community. The night was a tremendous success on all fronts, including the goal of raising funds for St. Mary’s faculty education. We raised an impressive $265,000 from Fund-A-Need, live and silent auctions, sponsors and ticket sales. As a result, our teachers have the distinct opportunity to be educated as a whole on programs and classroom techniques that made an immediate difference in each and every classroom across St. Mary’s campus.
