Athletics and Sports
Sports Camps are open to stud ents from Preschool through Grade 8 and will prepare athletes for the start of the season. The coaching staff will be teaching and enhancing fundamental skills important to better play in a specific sport. Fundamental skills covered include rules, how to score, ball handling skills, defensive fundamentals, pas sing and sport conditioning. Skills instruction will be supplemented with scrimm ages to practice and implem ent the instruction provided. In Track, coaches will focus on efficient runnin g mechanics through P.A.C.E. (Posture, Arm Action , Foot Contact and Hip Extens ion), speed development, muscular stre ngth and coordination. Good table manners, pleasant conversation skills, choosing the right attire to go out – never go out of style. Manners make life more pleasant for everyone. Students will be introduced to a new master artist every week such as Van Gogh, Picasso, and Claude Monet. We will go on adventures learning about their lives and work. Students will learn about the mediums, styles and techniques they are each known for. Children will work on several projects and reproductions throughout the 5 weeks. The course will end with a student gallery show.
This amazing enrichment cooking class offers a unique culinary experience to children in a safe environment that encourages discovery and creativity. Every session is a new experience with fresh weekly themes and exciting projects. Students sharpen math, language, science, and social studies skills. This interactive learning experience gives children the opportunity to develop a lifelong love for the culinary arts!

St. Mary’s Resort Day Camp offers activities, such as art, music, science and sports in conjunction with field trips and BBQ Fridays. Camp fosters childrens’ emotional, social, physical and creative growth through a range of interactive activities and relationships with role model counselors. Kindergarten to Grade 5 Day Camp

The St. Mary’s Kindergarten to Grade 5 Day Camp features a number of fun activities and trips filled with enrichment and entertainment. Students have the opportunity to relax, hang out with friends and participate in exciting activities as they unwind and enjoy their summer days. The day camp program takes every opportunity to not only make the day enjoyable for your child, but weaves community service and service learning. Philanthropic projects in the form of community-based service learning helps to instill in students a sense of connectedness to others through selfless acts. Philanthropic projects such as making lunch for a homeless shelter and Doheny State Beach clean up, helps campers see the world outside of themselves and starts the journey as advocates for change and social responsibility. The St. Mary’s Summer Resort day camp offers fun, educational and philanthropic activities that are sure to enrich your child’s summer and create lasting memories for years to come.
Weekly Activities Monday:
Dress up day! Students come dressed in themes such as sports dress, Hawaiian, safari and 50’s fun with contests for the best themed costume.
Tuesday:
Bring your swimsuits on Tuesdays and cool off with summer water activities such as water bounce houses water relays, fire bucket brigade, balloon toss and many more games to splash and play.
Wednesday:
Students should wear their Summer Resort T-shirt every Wednesday for afternoon off-campus field trips to Boomers, beach-clean up,. Laser Quest, Big Air, Aquarium of the Pacific and movies.
Thursday:
Baseball, Pillow Polo tournaments, snow cone making and much more!

BBQ lunch, clubs and a movie.

Kindergarten Prep Through hands-on, engaging literacy centers, incoming Kindergarten students will reinforce their knowledge of letters and sounds, participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups, and sharpen their comprehension skills during daily reading activities. Through the use of Handwriting Without Tears, incoming Kindergarten students will practice proper letter formation while having the opportunity to write and illustrate creative stories. The 6 + 1 Traits of Writing will be introduced and reinforced throughout the session. Incoming Kindergarten students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers, focusing on counting and writing numbers, number concepts, patterning, graphing and story problems. Everyday Math concepts will be reviewed during the lessons.
Grade 1 Prep
K- 5 ACADEMIC PREP
Incoming Grade 1 students will participate in the Daily 5 literacy program, which is a research-based approach to teaching students crucial decoding, fluency and comprehension skills. Students will also participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups to target these skills and to build vocabulary at the student’s instructional level. The writing curriculum provides an opportunity to proactive proper letter formation through the use of Handwriting Without Tears. During the Writer’s Workshop, students will have the opportunity to explore and create various types of writing, such as poetry, friendly letters and creative stories. In addition, students will learn to make their stories more interesting by adding adjectives and “juicy” words to their sentences. During math, students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers to reinforce and build upon their growing knowledge of concepts, addition and subtraction, time and money.
Grade 2 Prep Incoming Grade 2 students will enjoy a variety of opportunities to read, and be read to while engaging in hands-on literacy centers. Students will also participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups to build their sight word vocabulary, increase word solving skills and fluency, in addition to sharpen their comprehension skills at their individual instructional level. St. Mary’s proudly uses Fountas and Pinnell’s literacy program. Through the use of Handwriting Without Tears, incoming Grade 2 students will continue to practice proper letter formation. During the Writer’s Workshop, students will have the opportunity to compose, revise, illustrate and share their individual, original stories. The 6 + 1 Traits of Writing will be reinforced through daily mini-lessons. Incoming second grade students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers, focusing on the automaticity of basic addition and subtraction facts, real world word problems, time, and money. Students will work at their individual levels, while interacting with others through instructional games and centers. Everyday Math concepts will be reviewed during the lessons.
Grade 3 Prep Grade 3 summer reading will focus on small differentiated guided reading groups, concentrating on developing individual skills and strategies to improve comprehension, fluency and inference. The students will additionally read a class novel to explore the elements of character, setting and plot and further expand their vocabulary, prediction and summarizing skills. Students will experience reading different genres including poetry, plays, fiction and non-fiction. The writing program will stimulate the student’s imagination and develop their organization, sentence fluency and word choice through the 6 +1 writing program. Students will be taught how to include sensory details, incorporate exciting word choice and give their writing great voice. Conventional grammar will be taught with the rules of punctuation and verb tense, in addition to high frequency words and cursive handwriting. Within the math program students will be taught differentiated mathematical concepts with addition, subtraction, multiplication, measurement, geometry, place value, fractions and more through the Everyday Mathematics program. These concepts will be reinforced through interactive and cooperative math games and manipulatives. The Building Math Fluency Program will be taught to reinforce computation strategies and improve automaticity in addition, subtraction and multiplication.
Grade 4 Prep For our reading curriculum, incoming Grade 4 students will participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups. Students will learn critical reading strategies that will increase skills in comprehension, accuracy, and fluency at their individual instructional level. As a class, we will discuss character development, sequence of events, and vocabulary as we read a summer novel. In writing, the students will have the opportunity to awaken their creative juices, sharpen their writing skills, and explore the writing process using the 6 +1 Writing Traits and Lucy Calkins writing program. Students will also develop an understanding of the structure of a paragraph, including topic and closing sentences. Using their senses and descriptive adjectives, students will produce poems, personal narratives, and persuasive essays. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their writing with the teacher, as well as share with their peers. During math, incoming Grade 4 students will engage in differentiated math activities using math manipulatives and interactive games as well as the automaticity of basic math facts, place value, fractions, exponents, equations and variables.
Grade 5 Prep Incoming Grade 5 students will participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups designed to meet them at their individual instructional levels. Students will practice a variety of reading strategies that will increase skills in comprehension, accuracy, and fluency. As they read a class novel, the children will discuss character development, sequence of events, and vocabulary. Students will have the opportunity to awaken their creative juices, sharpen their writing skills, and explore the writing process using the 6 +1 Writing Traits. Students will continue to cultivate their ideas, voice, sentence fluency, organization, word choice, and conventions as they craft narrative, “I Come from Poems” and expository pieces, a camp newspaper. They will have opportunities to reflect on their writing with the teacher and their peers. Incoming Grade 5 students will engage in differentiated math activities using manipulatives and interactive games from the Everyday Math series. Finally, partial numbers will be explored as the children work with fractions, decimals, and percents.
GRADES 6-8 (MIDDLE SCHOOL)

Middle School students should select the appropriate math class based upon their math level for the next school year. Language A (Reading and Writing) class placement will be done according to grade level.
Math Prep, Grade 6 This year, summer school 6th grade math will be a five week program for incoming 6th grade students who have tested into the course. During this five week span students will become familiar with some of the major 6th grade math concepts in order to ready themselves for the upcoming school year. Students will be introduced to the following concepts: Order of operations and exponents; adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing mixed number fractions; converting improper fractions to mixed number fractions; dividing decimals and converting fractions to decimals; fraction/decimal/ percent conversion; percents; scale drawings; one and two step equations; and area and circumference of a circle.
Pre-Algebra Prep, Grades 6-7
Algebra Prep, Grades 7-8 This year, summer school Algebra Prep will be a five week program for incoming 7th/8th grade algebra students who have tested into the course. During this five week span students will become familiar with some of the major algebraic concepts in order to ready themselves for the upcoming school year. Students will be introduced to the following concepts: Exponents; order of operations, simplifying expressions and combining like terms; solving one, two and multistep equations; the distributive property; inequalities; relations and functions; negative exponents and evaluating algebraic expressions.
Students will work in small, differentiated groups to develop reading skills for fiction as well as non-fiction. Students will learn critical reading strategies to improve comprehension, accuracy and fluency. Each grade will be reading excerpts and short stories and some expository (science and humanities) leveled reading material. When reading fiction, they will learn how to pick out key characters, setting, plot line, literary devices such as imagery, and techniques in writing a summary. When reading non-fiction, students will learn to identify the main idea and details, and to outline chapters from an academic text. Students will respond in writing to what they have read, building on their knowledge of the six traits to produce short fiction and non-fiction pieces. The MLA format, used throughout St. Mary’s Middle School, will be reviewed and reinforced. This course provides excellent preparation and reinforcement for the rigors of Middle School reading and writing requirements.
6-8 ACADEMIC PREP
This year, summer school Pre-Algebra Prep will be a five week program for incoming 6th/7th grade Pre-Algebra students who have tested into the course. During this five week span students will become familiar with some of the major Pre-Algebra concepts in order to ready themselves for the upcoming school year. Students will be introduced to the following concepts: Integers and absolute value; adding and subtracting integers; multiplying and dividing integers; mixed number fractions; combining like terms; estimating square roots; Pythagorean Theorem; converting repeating decimals to fractions; one and two step equations; and surface area of prisms including cylinders.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Grades K-8 The theme of Vacation Bible School this year is

Each day students will participate in a morning assembly where Godwin Merrifeather, our world traveling Fun Fair bird will engage students with skits and singing songs which sets the stage for the Bible lesson for the day. The Biblical focus this year is on neighbors! Students will explore far way places such as Japan, Zimbabwe, United Kingdom, Australia and Mexico. Students will then follow their own small group leader to dig deeper into the lesson by participating in the following activities: Bible story time, crafts, discovery time, recreation plus much more. At the end of each day the entire VBS will gather together again to participate in a closing assembly before heading home. Come and join our Fun Fair this year! Grades 1-3 Come join us for a fun week of singing, food, games, and crafts in Spanish! Learn basic vocabulary and concepts of beginning level español through play and hands-on activities. This introduction to Spanish is an easy, fun way to try out Spanish for the first time or get a head start on your new Spanish classes you’ll be taking in the fall! Parents will join us on Friday for a special “fiesta” celebration planned and presented by the students.
Grades 4-8 Learn new words in Spanish and review basic concepts of this beautiful language as we explore the culture and diversity of Spanishspeaking countries. Advanced Computer Hardware, Grades 4-8 Students will explore concepts in computer hardware. They will learn how computers function from a hardware perspective, disassembling systems to learn how parts connect as well as building new systems from scratch. They will learn networking basics such as how networks functions, assembling a network cable, basic domain usage, and file sharing within a network. Additionally, students will explore the concept of an operating system comparing current popular solutions, GUI basics, as well as how to install an operating system cleanly. Lastly, students will be introduced to the concept of scripting, or creating files that execute automatics tasks.

Students will get a taste of what it is like to be a forensic scientist as they explore different aspects of solving mysteries. Students will focus upon the art of animation and the creation of a series of cartoon cels in this week-long workshop involving mixed media. They will view original “Popeye” cartoon cels and will be given the opportunity to invent original characters or to reinvent popular animated characters. Each cel will represent a three-step process – a base drawing, acrylic painting of that drawing and a creation of a suitable background to accompany the painted cel. In addition, students will discover the works of contemporary artist Roy Lichtenstein and will create large paintings inspired by his Pop Art style which was influenced by comic books and popular advertising. Ceramics/Bisque Grades 4-8 See how a ceramic piece is made and comes full circle. Start the week off creating an original clay piece that will be fired and then glaze it with the colors you choose. After a final firing, you will have created a beautiful, one of a kind piece from scratch. Clay takes several days to dry before it can be fired. We will spend the remainder of the week painting bisque pieces. Bisque are ceramic pieces that are already made and ready to be painted. There will be a variety of pieces created during this week. Music Technology camp will explore a variety of musical technology, both as a tool to learn about music, and a means of expression. iPad and computer technology will be key in this course. Music theory is an important part of understanding how music is put together, how musical thoughts can be written, and how to perform the ideas of others. Music Ace is an innovative computer game that teaches music theory in a fun way. Arguably the most powerful way to express oneself in music is through the creation of it, or composing or music. We will explore music composition using GarageBand, a looping software that is accessible to beginners and offers more advanced techniques for more experienced students. There will be several other music games and software we will explore and create with. And finally, we’ll have some good old-fashioned fun using Guitar Hero. Throughout the week students will create music and videos to go with their musical creations. At the end of the week students will present some of their work and take home a DVD of their creations.

Puppetry Camp will explore the many facets of bringing a puppet to life including: using facial expressions to create moods,
Jazz Band offers students the opportunity to pay instrumental jazz in an ensemble setting. All instrument types are welcome including strings, brass, woodwind and percussion. Repertoire will focus on classic standards, modern works, and popular styles. Students will also learn about jazz theory and how to apply it through composition and improvisation. K-8 ATHLETICS
Join us for a week of fun and volleyball as we prepare for the season ahead. This camp will focus on all the aspects of volleyball needed for a successful campaign. We will be working hard on the basic skills, such as passing setting hitting and serving, while at the same time getting to know the basics of defensive and offense strategies. Woven through this camp will be time spent on conditioning, footwork, nutrition, jump training, and core work. All of this in a fun and stress free setting! Whether you are coming to train for the season or just to improve your overall skill and enjoyment, this is the camp for you!

You can be sure your children will benefit from this nutritionally balanced menu that uses local sources for fresh fruits and vegetables and offers natural and hormone free meats and dairy products. Students are able to purchase lunches on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for $5. Register for lunch on Monday mornings. BBQ lunches are provided on Fridays.
