Through the use of Handwriting Without Tears, incoming Kindergarten students will practice proper letter formation while having the opportunity to write and illustrate creative stories. The 6+1 Traits of Writing will be introduced and reinforced throughout the session.

Incoming 6th-8th graders will work in small groups to develop reading skills for fiction as well as non-fiction. Students will learn critical reading strategies to improve comprehension, accuracy and fluency. When reading fiction, they will learn to pick out key characters, setting, plot line, literary devices such as imagery, and techniques for writing a summary. When reading non-fiction, students will learn to identify main idea and details, and to outline chapters from an academic text. Writing
This class will provide an opportunity for young writers to build on their knowledge of the six traits. The six traits are: word choice, sentence fluency, voice, ideas, conventions and organization, plus presentation. Students will gain experience recognizing the traits in others’ writing and incorporating them into their own. Students will produce a series of short pieces, fiction and non-fiction. The MLA format, used throughout Middle School, will be reviewed and reinforced. This course provides excellent preparation for the rigors of Middle School writing requirements at St. Mary’s. This section will introduce the concepts of pre-algebra, while reviewing the important sixth grade math concepts. This is a great class to strengthen the past years work and get a head start on the upcoming year. This class is open to incoming sixth and seventh graders with teacher approval. Offered Both Session 1 & Session 2 Time: 8:00-8:50 am Fee: $150 per class or $400 for Reading, Writing and Math Mathematics (Algebra Prep) Grades 7-8 This math class introduces the student to the next level of mathematics. academic enrichment Fast Action Math Grades 2-5 In Fast Action Math, we will be attacking those stubborn math facts head on through creative math games, flash masters, Mad Minutes and more! Join us to gain automaticity at your level in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students will work independently, as well as in small group settings, to focus on their individual needs. Be ahead of the game next year! Grades 6-8 (Grade 5 by approval) Come and explore the real world uses of math via activities based on Wall Street, sport statistics, bargain shopping and more. Basic mathematical skills are reinforced, such as multiplication, addition, subtraction, and division, as well as how to accurately design line and circle graphs, and tables. With the help of informed choices, wise trading decisions, or simple bias shown towards a company or team, students compete amongst themselves in head to head competition. Percentage and proportions are discussed, along with the laws one must follow to survive in the real world. Session 2 Only Time: 9:00-9:50 am Fee: $150

Math Around The World Grades 6-8 Are you interested in travel, seeing new places and do you need help with your math skills? Come and join Math Around The World and learn how to budget and plan a trip around the world. You will be given a budget and you will plan a trip to visit every continent. What flights will you get? Where will you stay? What will you see while you are there? Let’s have some fun and learn about the world and math at the same time. Grades 6-8 Through various skits, films, and hands-on interactive activities, students will learn how America transformed from a collection of colonists loyal to Great Britain to a country united by the desire for Freedom and Independence. Students will learn how and when the first people arrived in the Americas, and watch as their unique culture spreads and develops throughout the Americas. Students will experience what the interactions might have been like between the first European explorers and settlers and the natives that had been living there for thousands of years. As the colonies begin to develop and succeed students will watch as their ties to England start to weaken and eventually lead to a Revolution. Many unique culture aspects began to develop in Post-Revolutionary America. Through primary source documents and films, students will be able to see literature; art and music develop in a uniquely American fashion. Session 1 Only Time: 10:00 – 10:50 am Fee: $150
Mad Scientist Grade JK Come and play! Get your hands dirty and your mind racing as we build, explore and experiment with fun hands-on science. Students will do activities that are hands-on, and they get to take their projects home. Offered Both Session 1 & Session 2 Time: 10:00-10:50 am Fee: $160 per session (includes all materials) Mad Scientist Grades K-2 Come and play! Get your hands dirty and your mind racing as we build, explore and experiment with fun hands-on science. Students will do activities that are hands-on, and they get to take their projects home. Offered Both Session 1 & Session 2 Time: 8:00-8:50 am Fee: $160 per session (includes all materials) Building Science Knowledge Grades 5-8 Student knowledge base is enhanced through reading strategies that promote active, purposeful reading and improved reading comprehension. Daily practice includes organizing expository text through visual tools such as mind maps, Venn diagrams, flowcharts, if-then cause and effect boxes. Students analyze data through the use of graphs and charts. Students are guided by lecture and demonstration through topics of historically important scientific topics. Students explore these topics through reading, question & answer (journal), artistic rendering (portfolio) and problem-solving. Students present their understanding using PowerPoint presentations, models, computer simulations, and Excel spreadsheets. The first session focuses on life sciences and biology. The second session focuses on physical sciences including chemistry and the concept of the atomic theory of matter and chemical reactions. Hands-on lab and Investigation Grades 5-8 This practicum course focuses on developing student lab skills. Laboratory experiments are planned to support a sequence of skills learned. These include measurement, use of laboratory equipment, observation skills, recording and graphing data, and classification. The goal of the course is to develop a firm foundation for scientific thought and apply it in the laboratory write up process. Major topics of study include (session I life science) Cells, Genetics, The Six Kingdoms and the Human Body Systems. The course will culminate with comparative anatomy and dissection of eye ball and liver. Session II physical science and chemistry topics include the exothermic reaction caused when Sodium is added to water as well as the electrolysis of water. Offered Both Session 1 & Session 2 Time: 9:00-9:50 am Fee: $170 per class or $300 with Building Science Knowledge Comparative literature and Film Grades 6-8 Students will cover literary elements of a story and then use their analytical skills to compare and contrast the book to the film version. They will also read several short stories while learning to analyze various genres, such as fiction, non –fiction, short stories and poetry. Students will gain confidence in reading while learning how much more there is to a story than just words on a page. Session 2 Only Time: 10:00-10:50 am Fee: $150 Word Study Grades 1-3 Word study is about more than just spelling! Your child can improve his or her reading, vocabulary, and writing using this inquiry based program. Word study uses what your child already knows about words to expand his or her understanding of new words. We will be playing lots of fun, active games and hands on activities as we search for pattern based words and ‘oddball’ words. . Students will work independently, as well as in small group settings, to focus on their individual needs. Grades 3-5 Develop the habit of studying effectively and keeping your binder and planner in working order. You will learn strategies to prepare for and take tests, outline textbooks, take notes, organize personal folders, increase focus, create checklists and design time-lines for long-term projects, along with tips and tricks to quick organization. ViSual artS exploring Puppetry
Grades K-5 Puppets are great tools for expression and creativity. Plus they are just plain fun! In this class you will learn about the different types of puppets, make your own puppets, explore portraying emotion through expression, and even write and perform your own puppet show! Perfect for creative writers and artists, quirky characters, and budding actors! Session 1 Only Time: 10:00-10:50 am Fee: $170
Sculpture Rocks
Grades 1-8 Students will explore sculpture through experimentation with a wide variety of media. From the frieze, to the standing form, to creation of gargoyles designed to adorn a modern or traditional building, to paper sculpture, students will create naturalistic and abstract pieces. Art for everyone Grades 1-8
Students will explore the glass designs of Dale Chihuly, Aboriginal art, the many moods of Henri Matisse, the posters of Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, naturalistic and abstract portraiture, and the magic of Miro in this workshop! Pieces will be constructed through the use of a wide variety of media including watercolor, various elements of collage, clay, cut paper, acrylic paint, etc; with the goal of assembling a body of work fit for a portfolio. This class will culminate with a trip to the Getty Museum and the Hollywood Bowl to hear a Los Angeles Philharmonic rehearsal (a joint outing with the music classes). Artistic Bisque Painting Grades 1-8
Learn the techniques of painting on fired clay. We will study the art of applying glaze to ceramics through paints, glaze pastels, and glaze watercolors. Create a matching set of dishes for your house, while learning the fine techniques of beautiful ceramics. These will be functional as well as decorative. Offered Both Session 1 & Session 2 Time: 11:00-11:50 am Fee: $165 per session
Ceramics Grades 1-8 Learn to build hand made projects such as slab projects, coil projects, pinch sculptures. We will learn to create structures like bird houses and plates. We will also learn to glaze projects creating finished projects from scratch. What you make is what you keep. Offered Both Session 1 & Session 2 Time: 10:00-10:50 am Fee: $165 per session The Art of Sketching and engraving
Grades 1-8 Students will experiment with a wide variety of drawing materials (including Conte crayon, pastel, charcoal, graphite, and watercolor pencils) and different types of art papers to achieve effects inspired by great Italian, French, German and Dutch masters. Simple intaglio engravings will be created as well! It is known that drawing is a most useful memory tool, helpful with brain formation, as the longer that the artist is able to remember the subject at hand before committing it to paper, the stronger the recall in general tends to become! This class will culminate with a trip to the Getty Museum and the Hollywood Bowl to hear a Los Angeles Philharmonic rehearsal (a joint outing with the music classes). The Cartoon Cel
Grades 2-8 We will focus on the art of animation and the creation of a series of colorful cartoon cels in this workshop involving mixed media. Students will be given the opportunity to invent a cartoon character(s) and will take the character(s) through a series of animated adventures. Session 1 students will enjoy a trip to the Getty Museum and the Hollywood Bowl to hear a Los Angeles Philharmonic rehearsal (a joint outing with the music classes). Session 2 students will participate in an optional field trip to Disneyland including an orchestra concert (with the music students) and a drawing session focusing on animation. This class will give individual and ensemble opportunities to beginners on flute, clarinet, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, alto saxophone, violin, viola, cello, and bass. Beginning Drumline
Grades 4-8 Students explore the artistic angle, the lighting, composition and feeling a photo can express. ANY camera will do, disposable to digital, our goal is to create or capture the moment. The class will “focus” on advertising, fashion, family memories, historical records, criminal evidence, news headlines, paparazzi and the impact photography makes on our daily lives. We will also study ways to improve our personal photography legacy. Offered Both Session 1 & Session 2 Time: 8:00-8:50 am Fee: $150 per session
muSic learning Music Through Games
Grade JK Young students will have fun and learn at the same time. They will play many games while learning fundamental music skills, such as singing on pitch and keeping a steady beat. This is an active class with lots of movement, singing, and playing instruments. Great for your curious young musician! Session 1 Only Time: 9:00-9:50 am Fee: $160
Introduction to Guitar
Grades 3-8 Students will learn the parts of the guitar, how it works, and how to make music. The students will start with learning the different parts of the guitar and how they work together to make music. We will then learn basic music theory as they practice different chords, and memorize chord families. At the end of our time together students will be able to write words and music for their own song and, if they choose, they can perform it in front of their classmates. Students will need to provide their own acoustic guitars. Session 1 Only Time: 9:00 – 9:50 am Fee: $150

Beginning Keyboard Skills Grades K-5 Learn the basics of playing the keyboard while developing music reading skills. This class is for beginners who want to learn a keyboard instrument and have a basic understanding of beat, rhythm, and pitch. Students need not read music as this will be covered in the class. A book will be provided to each student. Class size is limited to 8 students Session 1 Only Time: 11:00-11:50 am Fee: $160

Students focus on fundamental percussion techniques through the study of exercises, cadences, and popular repertoire. The Beginning Drumline will perform a demonstration for family and friends during the last class of each Session. Class size is limited to 12 students Offered Both Session 1 & Session 2 Time: 8:00-8:50 am (Monday/Wednesday/Friday) Fee: $100

The Intermediate level further develops concepts studied in Beginning Drumline and requires players to have some experience. Students focus on fundamental percussion techniques through the study of exercises, cadences, and popular repertoire. The Intermediate Drumline will perform a demonstration for family and friends during the last class of each session. Inclusion in Intermediate Drumline is contingent upon a recommendation from Mr. Fineberg. Orchestra offers students the opportunity to play instrumental music in an ensemble setting. All instrument types are welcome including strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, and piano. Repertoire will focus on classical, modern, and popular works. Students will learn instrumental and ensemble technique as they prepare for performance. The Orchestra will play for family and friends during the last class of each Session. Instrumentalists should have a minimum of one year playing experience. Experienced 4th graders may enroll with approval from Mr. Fineberg. Offered Both Session 1 & Session 2 Time: 9:00-9:50 am Fee: $160 Jazz Band offers students the opportunity to play instrumental jazz in a small ensemble setting. All instrument types are welcome including strings, brass, woodwind and percussion. Repertoire will focus on classic standards, modern works, and popular styles. Students will also learn about jazz theory and how to apply it through composition and improvisation. The Jazz Band will perform for family and friends during the last class of each Session. Grades K-8 Basic elements of conversational French will be reinforced in the second session of French designed for beginners. Gardening Grades K-8
Turn soil into an edible schoolyard with themed garden boxes. Vegetables, fruit, and grains will be planted. Students will plan and produce meaningful and thoughtful gardens focused on herbs, butterfly favorites, and salad bowl dreams. Students will be given the chance to display their green thumbs by caring for seeds in a miniature classroom window greenhouse. Waste not! Composting will increase the productivity of soil and students will turn food scraps from home into rich soil with compost by adding worms! In time, plants will grow as students decorate the garden with their art (birdhouses, birdbaths, organic art with gourds). Students will plan and prepare healthy menus beginning by selecting fresh, local ingredients. Skills at chopping and cutting will safely be explored. Conversions between measurement systems will also be taught so that students confidently and consistently convert units to grams and precisely season a dish. Baking will not be the emphasis; however seasonal baked dessert items will be prepared. Etiquette and meal presentation will be studied and blessings on meals prior to eating will be encouraged. The St. Mary’s Summer Resort Day Camp offers a comprehensive and fun option for students who need care for extended hours during the summer. In conjunction with the summer academic classes offered, students have the opportunity to relax, hang out with friends and participate in a number of summer activities that will create lasting memories for years to come. Summer camp dates and hours are an extension of the summer school program and students are safely escorted by their summer school teacher from the classroom to summer camp before and after instruction. The Summer Resort day camp program features a number of fun field trips and activities. Field trips are focused around raising the local and global awareness of the campers. Students visit educational venues such as the Long Beach Aquarium, Bowers Museum, Newport Sports Museum, etc. to broaden and expand their classroom learning. The day camp program takes every opportunity to not only make the day enjoyable for the child, but weaves in educational aspects to further their growth in areas of science, history, biology, and other academic areas through hands-on exploration.

Cancellation & Refund Policy
St. Mary’s reserves the right to cancel or combine classes based on enrollment. Classes with fewer then eight students may be closed or combined with another grade level. For cancelled classes, a refund will be issued to parents that do not register their child in another class. To receive a tuition refund, a written notice must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the start of the class or session. A non-refundable registration fee of $50/child or $75/family is due at the time of registration. This registration fee includes a Summer Resort t-shirt for each child. Space is filled on a first come first served basis.

On occasion, the school will offer the use of developmentally appropriate media, such as television, films, and video that has been previewed by the staff prior to use. Students are not required to participate in the viewing of any program and will be offered an alternative activity as an option. Media is used as special events, rather than as regular, daily routine. Failure to comply may result in termination of care. • St. Mary’s School does not provide transportation for students. Public transit, school bus, or a commercial vendor will always provide transportation for field trips. • Private vehicles of staff are never used. • In the event my child must be excluded from the Summer Resort Program because of health reasons for that day, I agree to abide by the staff’s decision and take responsibility for the care of my child. If my child becomes ill while at St. Mary’s School, I understand St. Mary’s will not be able to provide care or services for the remainder of that day. • All staff members are required by law to report suspected child abuse. • I expect to be treated with respect and in return, I will treat all employees with respect. • If fees are paid late, services may be terminated until the balance is paid in full. Should services be terminated, you will be placed on the waiting list until a space is available. No tuition credit is given for illness or vacation days. • My child will be picked up on time from St. Mary’s each day. If I cannot pick up my child myself, I will arrange for another authorized person, at least 18 years old, to sign for and pick my child up by closing time. I understand it is my responsibility to notify the school in writing of any person who is to pick up my child other than those listed on these enrollment forms. Three late pick-ups during the summer will result in a termination of services for the remainder of the summer. • After the specified pick up time, a late fee of $15 per child will be charged for the first 15 minutes or any part thereof. Each additional 15 minutes or portion thereof, will be billed at $20 per child. • I will keep the camp and school informed of any changes that may affect my child’s behavior. I will keep the camp and school informed of any changes such as new phone numbers, address, or other circumstances. • I will complete all forms as required for enrollment. • If my child threatens the immediate safety of other children, staff, or himself/herself, I will be notified and expected to pick up my child immediately. Should my child’s behavior continue to present a problem, he/she could be suspended and or services terminated. • All contracts and supplemental packets must be completed and returned prior to my child’s first day. I have read and agree to all St. Mary’s policies, handbook, the fee schedule, and this form and agree to adhere to the stated policies and procedures and pay all charges incurred. I understand that failure to follow any school policies may lead to the termination of child care services. St. Mary’s reserves the right to cancel or change classes at any time. It is herby understood and agreed upon that St. Mary’s School and staff are not liable for delays, inconveniences, or changes when deemed advisable for the well-being of the group. All photos, videos and recordings taken are the property of the school and can be used in publications and school advertising.

SUMMER SCHOOL / ATHLETIC CAMPS: Please complete the form below by selecting the session and course your child will be attending. Session 1 dates are June 20 July 8, 2011. Please note there will be no school on Monday, July 5, 2010. Session 2 dates are July 11 – 29, 2011. St. Mary's reserves the right to cancel or combine classes based on enrollment. Classes with fewer then eight students may be closed or combined with another grade level. For cancelled classes, a refund will be issued to parents that do not register their child in another class. To receive a tuition refund, a written notice must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the start of the class or session. A one-time non-refundable registration fee of $50/child or $75/family is due at the time of registration. This registration fee covers all resort programs and includes a t-shirt . Space is filled on a first come first served basis.
