Welcome to St. Mary’s Summer Resort! We appreciate you choosing our summer program which provides a wide and

diverse offering of camps and classes for your student. Summer Resort is dedicated to inquiry-based academic excellence, developing well-rounded, confident children in a Christian environment through educating the whole child with a variety of academic, specialty, and athletic camps. Students will have the opportunity to meet new friends, try new things, and make new memories while attending our Summer Resort.

ACADEMIC PREP

Specialty Camps

Academic Prep provides grade level classes to keep students engaged in the learning process by reinforcing existing knowledge while learning new concepts to prepare them for the start of school in the fall. Students will enhance their reading, writing and mathematics skills to build a stronger foundation for the next grade level. EEP and Kindergarten through Grade 8 Classes available. June 27 – July 22 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Specialty Camps allow students to pursue a new interest or develop a passion in several areas. Camps in technology, science, cooking, language, and art provide an in depth experience into each area. Students will enjoy feeling like experts in their newly learned fields. EEP and Kindergarten through Grade 8, weekly camps available Full (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) and Half Day (12:00 pm to 4:00 pm) options EEP Half Day (9:00am - 12:00 pm)

Athletic Camps

Day Camp offers a wide range of activities from art and science to games for students to build friendships in a safe, fun environment. Day Camp fosters students’ emotional, social, physical, and creative growth through a variety of activities and environments. EEP and Kindergarten through Grade 5 weekly camps available Full (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) and Half Day (12:00 pm to 4:00 pm) options EEP Half Day (9:00am - 12:00 pm)

Athletic Camps focus on ability, sportsmanship, and strategies of the game. Students have the opportunity to explore different sports, develop sport specific skills, and build team work. Our camps are a great way to exercise, meet new teammates, and prepare for the upcoming season. Kindergarten through Grade 8, weekly camps available. Full (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) and Half Day (12:00 pm to 4:00 pm) options

Day Camp attends field trips on Wednesdays. EEP brings on-site presentations on Thursdays Athletics and Specialty Camps DO NOT participate on field trips to allow for more concentrated learning. Our Specialty camps will not have water play or lunch because they take place after 1/2 day dismissal. All camps will be able to join in the Water Slide on Tuesday afternoons. KINDERGARTEN TO GRADE 5 DAY CAMP The St. Mary’s Kindergarten to Grade 5 Day Camp features a number of fun activities and

trips filled with enrichment and entertainment. Students have the opportunity to relax, hang out with friends and participate in exciting activities as they unwind and enjoy their summer days. This one-of-a-kind class allows your child to participate in a wide range of hands on learning, games, and crafts that will spark your child’s imagination. The St. Mary’s Summer Resort day camp offers fun, educational and unique activities that are sure to enrich your child’s summer and create lasting memories for years to come. In Day Camp every day is a new adventure! Weekly Activities Monday: Scavenger hunt, balloon volleyball, caterpillar hula, and Hawaiian day. Campers will get to take advantage of this fun day and dress in their best Hawaiian gear and even learn to hula! Tuesday: Bring your swimsuits on Tuesdays and cool off with summer water activities such as water bounce houses, water relays, fire bucket brigade, balloon toss and many more games to splash and play. Wednesday: Students should wear their Summer Resort T-shirt every Wednesday for afternoon off-campus field trips to the Aquarium of the Pacific, Laser Quest, Big Air Trampoline, Scooters Jungle, the movies and more! Thursday: Create a kite, big ball soccer, watercolor painting, and Pirate Day. Campers will sport their best pirate gear, build their very own ship and hunt for treasure! ACADEMIC PREP GRADE 3 SUMMER PREP

Grades K-5 (Lower School)

Incoming Grade 3 summer reading will focus on small differentiated guided reading groups, concentrating on developing individual skills and strategies to improve comprehension, fluency and inference. The students will also read a class novel to explore the elements of character, setting and plot and further expand their vocabulary, prediction and summarizing skills. Students will experience reading different genres including poetry, plays, fiction and non-fiction.

KINDERGARTEN PREP

Through hands-on, engaging literacy centers, incoming Kindergarten students will reinforce their knowledge of letters and sounds, participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups, and sharpen their comprehension skills during daily reading activities.

The writing program will stimulate the student’s imagination and develop their organization, sentence fluency and word choice through the 6+1 writing program. Students will be taught how to include sensory details, incorporate exciting word choice and give their writing great voice. Conventional grammar will be taught with the rules of punctuation and verb tense, in addition to high frequency words and cursive handwriting.

Through the use of Handwriting Without Tears, incoming Kindergarten students will practice proper letter formation while having the opportunity to write and illustrate creative stories. The 6 + 1 Traits of Writing will be introduced and reinforced throughout the session.

Within the math program students will be taught differentiated mathematical concepts with addition, subtraction, multiplication, measurement, geometry, place value, fractions and more through the Everyday Mathematics program. These concepts will be reinforced through interactive and cooperative math games and manipulatives. The Building Math Fluency Program will be taught to reinforce computation strategies and improve skills in addition, subtraction and multiplication.

Incoming Kindergarten students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers, focusing on counting and writing numbers, number concepts, patterning, graphing and story problems. Everyday Math concepts will be reviewed during the lessons.

GRADE 1 PREP

GRADE 4 PREP

Incoming Grade 1 students will participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups focused on increasing decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills. Students will build their sight word vocabulary with daily practice, review, and reinforcement.

For our reading curriculum, incoming Grade 4 students will participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups. Students will learn critical reading strategies that will increase skills in comprehension, accuracy, and fluency at their individual instructional level. As a class, we will discuss character development, sequence of events, and vocabulary as we read a summer novel.

Students will practice appropriate letter formation through the use of Handwriting Without Tears. During the Writer’s Workshop, students will have the opportunity to explore and create various types of writing including poetry, friendly letters, and creative stories. In addition, students will learn vital grammar skills to strengthen their writing. Students will be encouraged to share their writing with the class and strengthen public speaking skills.

In writing, the students will have the opportunity to awaken their creative juices, sharpen their writing skills, and explore the writing process using the 6+1 writing traits and Lucy Calkins writing program. Students will also develop an understanding of the structure of a paragraph, including topic and closing sentences. Using their senses and descriptive adjectives, students will produce poems, personal narratives, and persuasive essays. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their writing with the teacher, as well as share with their peers.

During math, students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers to reinforce and build upon their growing knowledge of math concepts. Students will explore addition and subtraction, patterns, measurement, time, and money. Technology will be consistently integrated to help differentiate and enhance students’ ability levels in reading, writing, and math.

During math, incoming fourth grade students will engage in differentiated math activities using math manipulatives and interactive games. They will focus on automaticity of basic math facts, place value, fractions, exponents, equations and variables. They will build on their already growing knowledge of multiplication and division. Everyday Math concepts will be reviewed, reinforced, and introduced during the lessons. The students will also become familiar with the Everyday Math website.

GRADE 2 PREP

Incoming Grade 2 students will enjoy a variety of opportunities to read, and be read to while engaging in hands-on literacy centers. Students will also participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups to build their sight word vocabulary, increase word solving skills and fluency, in addition to sharpen their comprehension skills at their individual instructional level. St. Mary’s proudly uses Fountas and Pinnell’s literacy program.

GRADE 5 PREP

Incoming Grade 5 students will participate in small, differentiated guided reading groups designed to meet them at their individual instructional levels. Students will practice a variety of reading strategies that will increase skills in comprehension, accuracy, and fluency. As they read a class novel, the children will discuss character development, sequence of events, and vocabulary.

They will have opportunities to reflect on their writing with the teacher and their peers.

Incoming Grade 2 students will engage in hands-on, differentiated math centers, focusing on the automaticity of basic addition and subtraction facts, real world word problems, time, and money. Students will work at their individual levels, while interacting with others through instructional games and centers. Everyday Math concepts will be reviewed during the lessons.

Incoming Grade 5 students will engage in differentiated math activities using manipulatives and interactive games from the Everyday Math series. Finally, partial numbers will be explored as the children work with fractions, decimals, and percents.

ALGEBRA PREP, GRADES 7-8

Grades 6-8 (Middle School)

This year, summer school Algebra Prep will be a four week program for incoming Grade 7/8 algebra students who have tested into the course. During this five week span, students will become familiar with some of the major algebraic concepts in order to ready themselves for the upcoming school year. Students will review concepts from previous courses and will be introduced to concepts including exponents, order of operations, simplifying expressions and combining like terms, solving one, two and multi-step equations, the distributive property, inequalities, relations and functions, and evaluating algebraic expressions.

Dates: 4 Week Session, June 27 - July 22

Middle School students should select the appropriate math class based upon their math level for the next school year. Language and Literature class placement will be done according to grade level.

MATH PREP, GRADE 6

This year, summer school Grade 6 Math will be a four week program for incoming Grade 6 students who have tested into the course. During this five week span, students will become familiar with some of the major Grade 6 math concepts in order to ready themselves for the upcoming school year. Students will review concepts from previous courses and will be introduced to concepts including order of operations and exponents, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing mixed number fractions, converting improper fractions to mixed number fractions, dividing decimals, converting fractions to decimals, fraction/decimal/percent conversions, scale drawings, one and two step equations, finding area of two-dimensional figures, and circumference of circles.

ACADEMIC PREP FOR LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE, GRADE 6-8

Students coming in to Grade 6 will read one novel together this summer. We will annotate the book, and maintain a journal to analyze plot, setting, characters and themes, using quotes from the text to support claims. Students will build on their knowledge of the six traits, to write short response-to-literature essays. Students will also spend time writing an “isearch” paper, a research report on a subject of their own choosing. The MLA format, used throughout Middle School, will be presented and followed. This course provides excellent preparation and reinforcement for the rigorous reading and writing requirements at St. Mary’s. Supplies: Spiral notebook and pens or pencils. Reading books will be provided.

PRE-ALGEBRA PREP, GRADES 6-7

This year, summer school Pre-Algebra Prep will be a four week program for incoming Grade 6/7 Pre-Algebra students who have tested into the course. During this five week span, students will become familiar with some of the major Pre-Algebra concepts in order to ready themselves for the upcoming school year. Students will review concepts from previous courses and will be introduced to concepts including integers and absolute value, adding and subtracting integers, multiplying and dividing integers, mixed number fractions, combining like terms, one and two step equations, graphing linear functions and surface area of prisms.

Students coming into Grades 7 or 8 will read short fiction together this summer. We will annotate the text, and maintain a journal to analyze characterization, setting, mood and themes, using quotes from the text to support claims, and identifying author’s purpose and use of figurative language such as metaphor, simile and personification. Students will write short response-to-literature essays. Students will examine the components of a famous speech, and spend time writing an “isearch” paper, a research report on a subject of their own choosing. The MLA format, used throughout Middle School, will be reviewed and reinforced. This course provides excellent preparation and reinforcement for the rigorous reading and writing requirements at St. Mary’s.

3D PRINT AND DESIGN

Grades 3-6 Come learn about the exciting world of 3D design and 3D printing. Students will be introduced to an online 3D design program and see their designs come to life with a 3D printer. Students will also learn how this technology has many opportunities to help many people’s lives around the world. Teacher: Cody Barrett Dates: Week 1 – June 20 - 24 Times: 9 am – 4 pm Cost: $325

ACTING FOR TELEVISION

Grades 5-8 Lights! Camera! Action! Have you ever wanted to star in a Movie or TV show? This class will teach students the essential techniques of acting for film. Concentrating on auditioning, commercial acting techniques, character development, comedic and dramatic scene study. This will be accomplished through performing scenes and exercises that will explore the fundamentals of good acting, learn practicable on-camera technique, and acquire a basic, realistic understanding of the film and television industry. Teacher: Ali Sepasyar, has performed on a Cartoon Network series for four seasons. His theater training ranges from classical restoration theater to the theatre of the absurd. He has taught master classes and is an Orange County High School of the Arts alumni. Dates: Week 1 – June 20 - 24 Times: 9 am – 4 pm Cost: $325

HUMAN BIOLOGY

Grades 6-8 How does your body work? Learn about structures of the human body that are related to their functions in their biological systems. This course includes the study of the various systems in the body. Such systems include the circulatory, immune, skeletal and respiratory systems, among several others. We will explore “On Pins and Needles”, “What’s in Energy Drinks”, “The Link between Air Pollution and Asthma”, “Making Clean Water”, “The Science of Jet Lag” among others. We will also explore the positive effects of exercise and a healthy diet on our body systems. Teacher: Leila Volkmann Dates: Week 1 – June 20-24 Time: 9 am - 4 pm Cost: $325


iPAD PHOTOGRAPHY

Grades K-5 Students will learn the basics of digital photography including composition, lighting, landscapes, and portraits using an iPad’s camera. The students will also learn how to edit, print, and frame their photos for presentation. At the end of the week, the students will display their portfolio of their best work in a gallery for friends and family. MEXICAN CHEF

Grades 4-8 iDelicioso! Come join us as we head to the kitchen for a delicious exploration of tasty dishes from south of the boarder! Incoming Grades 1-3 students will sharpen their culinary and language skills as they cook, bake and eat a variety of foods from Central and South America while practicing and learning Spanish. Hands-on activities and daily cooking classes in Spanish make this a fun and tasty way to learn more Spanish and improve fluency. On Friday, parents are invited to join us for a special celebration to sample some of the children’s culinary masterpieces. MODERN MASTERPIECE

Grades 1-8 Students will learn about the lives and styles of late nineteenth Century through mid-twentieth Century artists Edgar Degas, Louis ComfortTiffany, Andy Warhol, Paul Cezanne, and Joan Miro. They will create a pastel piece inspired by Degas; a glass piece influenced by the works of Tiffany; a graphic piece a la Warhol; a landscape painting on canvas in the style of Cezanne; and a collage inspired by Miro. At week’s end, each participant will have completed a colorful portfolio of artwork inspired by the works of these influential Impressionist, Post Impressionist, and Modern artists! ROBOTICS

Grades 1-3 Interested in learning about LEGO® Robotics? Join us this summer to learn the basics of using the LEGO® WEDO® robot. Students will be given the opportunity to build different types of autonomous robots. They will be taught how to program the robots to move, talk, and carry out tasks. Students will work together to accomplish many different goals, all while operating under the First LEGO® League’s Core Set of Values. Week 2 June 27 - July 1 ACTING FOR THE STAGE

Grades 5-8 This course enlarges the student’s understanding of “performance” in a playful, encouraging, collaborative atmosphere. Because actor training is also life training, students can expect to find new, deeper connections to others and their own creativity, unlocking profound layers of empathy through character exploration. Thus, particular emphasis will be given to expanding the imagination, supporting classmates’ growth, and collaborating effectively. Students will also perform a range of works from classical Shakespeare to the more contemporary Samuel Beckett and fully grasp stage presence in a dynamic manner. Teacher: Ali Sepasyar, has performed on a Cartoon Network series for four seasons. His theater training ranges from classical restoration theater to the theatre of the absurd. CARTOON CEL ANIMATION WORKSHOP

Grades 1-8 Students will focus upon the art of animation and the creation of a series of cartoon cels in this week-long workshop involving mixed media. They will view original “Popeye” cartoon cels and will be given the opportunity to invent original characters or to reinvent popular animated characters. Each cel will represent a three-step process – a base drawing, acrylic painting of that drawing and a creation of a suitable background to accompany the painted cel. In addition, students will discover the works of contemporary artist Roy Lichtenstein and will create large paintings inspired by his Pop Art style which was influenced by comic books and popular advertising. Grades 1-3 Dive into this summer program and explore the wonders of the ocean. Grades 6-8 Here’s your chance to be an amateur microbiologist. Learn about microscopic creatures you cannot see with your naked eye. Did you know that a bacteria naturally present on cabbage can change it into the common, fermented food called sauerkraut? Whether you are an experienced cheerleader or a beginner, in Cheer Camp, you will learn organized cheerleading routines, proper hand and body movements, as well as elements of tumbling, dance, jumps and stunting.
