FROM AROUND THE GROVE n Short Subjects CIT Discussions Continue Faculty and staff attended a January academic forum featuring the Rev. J. Bryan Hehir, who spoke about “Catholic Identities: Ideas, Institutions and Community,” as part of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition lecture series sponsored by the Office of Mission and Identity. Hehir is the Parker Gilbert Montgomery Professor of the Practice of Religion and Public Life at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Other speakers during the spring semester addressed the theme “Hispanic Presence in Our Nation and Our Church.” Ada Maria Isasi-Diaz of Drew University spoke on “The Power, Challenge and Pleasure of Diversity,” followed by “Resurrection on the Border: Mapping the Religious Terrain,” delivered by Roberto Goizueta of Boston College.

Concluding the series in April is Jeanette Rodriguez of Seattle University, whose lecture is titled “Cultural/Poetic Memory as a Source for Religious Thought.”

Book TV Bus Stops By

Staff members and work-study students in the University’s Academic Imaging and Media Center paused for a photo after touring the C-SPAN2 Book TV bus, which stopped on campus Jan. 25. The bus travels the country informing the public about C-SPAN and Book TV programming, giving tours of its state-ofthe-art television studio on wheels. Several St. Mary’s faculty members were interviewed for possible Book TV segments during the visit.

The graduate international relations program and the St. Mary’s Fund for Judeo-Christian Studies brought W. Patrick Lang, the former head of human and Middle East intelligence at the Defense Intelligence Agency, to campus for two public lectures on Iraq and Islam in February.

Lang, a retired Army colonel, is president and CEO of a Washingtonbased international security and risk consulting firm. He is a frequent contributor to many national media

outlets, including CNN and National Public Radio.

The highlight of the annual Business Week sessions in November was La Quinta Inn Keynote Lecture, given by the chief operating officer of La Madeleine Bakery, Café and Bistro. Rosalyn “Roz” Mallet, a 1977 alumna of St. Mary’s, delivered a realistic, inspirational talk to students about her life as a woman and an African American in the corporate world.

Mid-Year Commencement Grows

St. Mary’s University held commencement exercises for 349 graduate and undergraduate students Dec. 16 in the Bill Greehey Arena.

The ceremony included students who had completed their degree work in both the summer and fall sessions. Some 200 students received bachelor’s degrees, and 148 received either master’s or doctorate degrees.

Keynote speaker for the Commencement Exercises was Lt. Gen. John F. Regni, superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy and a St. Mary’s graduate.

Marianist Heritage Week Honors Many Fellowship and recognition brought the campus community together during Marianist Heritage Week, Jan. 22–27.

Besides noting the 10th anniversary of the Marianist Leadership Program and expanding Continuing the Heritage Service Day to include alumni, the University also honored the efforts of faculty, staff members and students who live and share the Marianist charism in their everyday lives. This year’s recognitions went to:

Law Classroom Dedication

Retired District Judge John Specia (J.D. ’75) presides over a demonstration by student attorneys during the School of Law’s ceremony dedicating the school’s new technologically enhanced courtroom. Las Américas Letters Series Begins Las Américas Letters Series in Literature and the Arts kicked off its first installment March 8-10 on the St. Mary’s campus, focusing

Native American poet and musician, and Mónica Gontovnik, a performance artist, writer and actress from Barranquilla, Columbia.

The fall 2007 event will feature Marisela Barrera, a Tejana theater director and playwright. Barrera is founder of the actor-driven La Colectiva Performance Group, founder and director of TeatroFEST and president-elect of the San Antonio Theatre Coalition. During the fall event, Barrera will stage an original play showcasing local and national Latino talent. More specific details on the event will be available later.

The School of Law sent separate teams to compete in two national mock trial tournaments in March after successfully competing in regional competitions.

For the second time in four years, a team of third-year law students won the regional tournament of the National Mock Trial Competition, sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Texas Young Lawyers Association, sending them to the national tournament in Houston, March 28-31. St. Mary’s students Jessica Baruc, Rebecca Lively and Brian Lewis, claimed victory in the regional competition.

And, a Black Allied Law Students Association team of third-year students Marc LaHood, Patricia Aguayo, Keaton Kirkwood and Sonja Sims placed second at the Rocky Mountain Regional competition of the Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial Competition propelling them to the national competition in Atlanta, March 21-25. It is the second consecutive year St. Mary’s has fielded a team at the national tournament.

PPC Considers ‘Good Neighbors’ The spring President’s Peace Commission program in March focused on the neighborhood surrounding St. Mary’s University.

“University Community: Are We Good Neighbors?” discussed the

challenges of a campus/neighborhood collaboration.

The topic was timely as St. Mary’s begins to address the learning and living experience of the University Park neighborhood. A neighborhood revitalization task force has been spearheaded by St. Mary’s to lead neighborhood renewal and commercial transformation efforts.

Theater Enthusiasts Treated to Irish Play The drama department’s production of the play “Lovers: Winners” opened in early March to a weeklong run.

Bernadette Hamilton-Brady, director of theatre at St. Mary’s, directed the play. The story by Irish playwright Brian Friel centered on two teenagers planning their life together while studying for final exams on a hill overlooking their Irish town.

The action is interspersed with two adult commentators whose factual, impersonal descriptions make it clear the teenagers will be dead before the day is out. The production incorporated electronic media and Irish music.

Law School Ranks No. 2 in Hispanic Outlook

The School of Law was recently ranked second in the nation for graduating Hispanic students, according to a survey published in Hispanic Outlook magazine. The rankings are based on 2005 graduation figures. That year, St. Mary’s conferred 235 juris doctorate degrees. Of those, 59 degrees, or 25 percent, were granted to Hispanic students.

‘Freedom Ride’ Honors King St. Mary’s students and faculty revisited the history and milestones of the San Antonio civil rights movement and current social justice issues during a unique bus tour Jan. 25, the culmination of a two-week celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

The event, called “Freedom Ride: Understanding San Antonio Civil Rights in the Eastside Community,” was sponsored by the 21st Century Leadership Center and the University’s Martin Luther King Committee.

The bus toured locations significant to the civil rights movement, including Mt. Zion Baptist Church, which was founded by former slaves and the site of a firebombing in 1974; Sunset Station and historically black St. Philip’s College. As the bus traveled between locations, participants heard from community leaders who played a role in the movement.

St. Mary’s students, staff and faculty launched the celebration by participating in what has become one of the nation’s largest MLK marches.

Subsequent activities included prayer sessions, public readings of King’s works, a St. Mary’s student-led children’s program at a local elementary school, lectures, films and discussion groups.

Delegation Calls on State Lawmakers A 25-member delegation from St. Mary’s, comprised of University administrators, faculty, staff and students, traveled to Austin in January to thank legislators for their support, and encourage continued funding, of the Texas Tuition Equalization Grant Program. More than 1,100 St. Mary’s students receive some $2 million each year in TEG funding.

St. Mary’s hosted legislators to a breakfast in the Lt. Governor’s Reception Room in the Capitol Building before delegation members dispersed to meet with senators and representatives from Bexar County and others who populate the House and Senate’s higher education and appropriations committees.

In February, a group of St. Mary’s students attended Student Day at the Capitol to visit with legislators and express their gratitude to all who support TEG.

July Bar Passage Rate Highest Since 1993 More than 84 percent of first-time test takers from St. Mary’s School of Law passed the July 2006 bar exam, the best showing on the July test since 1993, according to the Texas Board of Law Examiners.

Of the 203 St. Mary’s students who sat for the bar exam this past July, 171 passed the exam. That is 12 percentage points above the success rate of the July 2005 test when 72 percent passed.

The July 2006 passage rate exceeded the statewide first-time test taker average of 83 percent.

CLE Courses Set The School of Law is sponsoring continuing legal education programs, one during Homecoming and the other in Innsbruck this summer.

Law school alumni enriched their minds and their practices at the annual Homecoming CLE sessions.

Alumni, friends and family, as well as members of the entire legal community are invited to attend a CLE program and tour July 2-8 in Innsbruck and Salzburg, Austria, and Munich, Germany.

The program and tour coincide with St. Mary’s Institute on World Legal Problems. Participants can attend a session and social with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the Distinguished Visiting Jurist at the summer institute.

Cotrell Named to Education Task Force St. Mary’s University President Charles L. Cotrell, Ph.D., has been invited to serve the local community as a member of San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger’s Education Task Force.

The task force, formed this past fall, has been constituted to develop community-wide strategies to improve the quality of early childhood education, K-16 education and work force development.

Cotrell also is chairman of the 40member institution Independent Colleges and Universities of Texas, whose purpose is to advocate for policies and programs that support private higher education in the state.

Distinguished Faculty Honored To recognize the dedication and excellence of the faculty, the St. Mary’s University Alumni Association honored all faculty members at the annual Faculty Appreciation Dinner. Special recognition was given to those distinguished faculty members who go the extra mile for their students.

The 2007 St. Mary’s University Distinguished Faculty Honorees are Jeffrey Johnson, Ph.D., assistant professor of international business, Bill Greehey School of Business; Camille Langston, Ph.D., associate professor of English, and Leona Pallansch, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, both of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences; and Rafael Moras, Ph.D., professor of engineering, School of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Also honored were Dana Comstock, Ph.D., professor of counseling, Graduate School; and Jeffrey Addicott, J.D., professor of law, School of Law.

Buddy Meyer in San Antonio Hall of Fame St. Mary’s coaching legend Buddy Meyer was a member of the 2007 class inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame on Feb. 16.

Meyer, who retired in 2005, coached the St. Mary’s men’s basketball team for 27 seasons, winning more than 500 games and one NAIA title. His legendary relationship with St. Mary’s started as a player from 1961-1964, where he amassed 1,581 career points—fifth in school history—and became the first player named all-conference all four years.

Hispanic Texas and the Southwest.

Martinez joined the University community last August. Her research interests include indigenous communities along the northeastern Spanish borderlands, the Tlaxcalan migration, race and ethnicity issues, and gender studies.

The first to fill the endowed Bill Greehey Chair for Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility is Matt Gilley, Ph.D., most recently an associate professor of management at Oklahoma State University. Gilley has been honored for outstanding teaching at OSU and has consulted extensively with government agencies, utility companies and businesses on issues relating to strategy, ethics and corporate social responsibility.

The next Charles E. Cheever Professor of Risk Management in the business school is David W. Sommer, Ph.D., who comes to St. Mary’s from the University of Georgia where he was an associate professor of risk management and insurance. Sommer is a 1989 St. Mary’s business school graduate.

Ambassador Returns to St. Mary’s Ambassador Eugene L. Scassa has returned to St. Mary’s as the University’s international scholar-inresidence. He will teach in the international relations program and serve as a liaison to area governments.

In addition, Scassa will assist St. Mary’s with other initiatives, including international education issues and programs, international student recruitment, internships and career opportunities for students interested in public service, and Fulbright Scholar opportunities for St. Mary’s faculty.

Ambassador Scassa previously served as the diplomat-in-residence at St. Mary’s from 1997 to 2000.

Three St. Mary’s vice presidents and two deans have been reappointed.

They are: Rebeckah J. Day, vice president of administration and finance; Thomas B. Galvin, vice president of university advancement; and Suzanne M. Petrusch, vice president of enrollment management.

The St. Mary’s Board of Trustees confirmed the reappointments at its November meeting.

Additionally, Henry Flores, Ph.D., dean of the Graduate School, and Keith Russell, Ph.D., dean of the Bill Greehey School of Business, have been reappointed to their posts.

Commitment to Academic Excellence Continues For the fourth consecutive year Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Foundation has provided scholarship funds for business students. The BNSF Scholars must undergo a rigorous selection process that requires nomination from faculty advisers and a review by a three-person committee comprised of business faculty and administrators.

Once selected for the scholarship, the students’ relationship with BNSF—which includes paid summer internships at one of the company’s offices or facilities—continues through graduation.

More than half of the $2 million secured in support of renovations to St. Louis Hall has come through the generosity of alumni and friends.

New Literature and Arts Series Raising Support

The Brother William J. Hamm, S.M., Ph.D., Scholarship for Excellence in Physics has reached endowment thanks to a recent gift of more than $10,000. The scholarship will cover the costs of tuition, fees, and required educational books, supplies and equipment.

Additional support may be available to subsidize related opportunities for approved undergraduate research, attendance at professional meetings, or other academic activities designed to enhance the student’s educational experience.

Las Américas Letters Series in Literature and the Arts (see Short Subjects item on page 3) has begun to generate interest among the local community.

Alumni Association Directs Support to Schools and Scholarships The Alumni Association committed more than $120,000 to endowed scholarships and school-based priorities. In addition to funding the endowed alumni scholarship, the

St. Louis Hall Support Grows The Zachry Foundation, a private family foundation, has pledged $200,000 in support of renovations to St. Louis Hall. With a strong commitment to higher education, the foundation has generously supported various initiatives at the University for more than 30 years.

Capitol Aggregates Ltd., a subsidiary of the Zachry Group, Inc., has committed $100,000 in support of renovations. Privately owned with headquarters in San Antonio, Capitol Aggregates Ltd. engages in diverse operations including construction, engineering, industrial service and real estate development. Marianist Gift Reaches Multiple Programs

The South Texas Chapter of RIMS Inc. (Risk and Insurance Management Society) gave $12,000 in support of the general gift fund at the Bill Greehey School of Business.

n Sports Corner Basketball Teams Make Tournament, Dinkins Named All-District After some struggles early on, both the men’s and women’s teams made the cut for the Heartland Conference Tournament held in Denton in early March. The men drew the University of Incarnate Word for their first match and the women played Montana State Billings. The winners of the tournament receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.

St. Mary’s Rattler post Joe Dinkins, a graduate student from Conroe, earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA first team Academic All-District Six honors. Dinkins earned his bachelor’s degree in business last May, graduating with a 3.84 GPA, and will complete his MBA later this spring.

Heartland Conference Player of the Week honors for the men went to Marcus Hill, a sophomore from Longview; Latez Williams, a junior from Hamilton, Ohio, and Jarvis Lee, a senior from Houston.

Some 1,500 fans witnessed the naming of the Buddy and Anna Meyer Court in the Bill Greehey Arena on Feb. 19. Chairman of the Board of Trustees Ruben Escobedo (front, far left), President Charles L. For the women, Charlena Rodez, a senior from Cedar Park, scored her 1,000th career point and earned Heartland Player of the Week recognition. Juanita Merchant, a junior from Angleton; Ashton Benford, a sophomore from Waxahachie; and Natalie Gamez, a sophomore from San Antonio, all were named player of the week during the season.

Five Rattlers Honored by Heartland in Men’s Soccer Brett Collier, Raul Davila, Jonathon Gray, Scott Kilpatrick and Kris Sumpter were named All-Heartland Conference for their play last fall.

Collier, a freshman goalkeeper from Schertz, was one of just six freshmen picked for the conference team.

Davila, a junior from Houston, led the Rattlers in scoring with three goals.

Gray, a senior from El Paso, overcame early season injuries to earn a second team honor at midfielder. Kilpatrick, a junior from Converse, earned conference honors for the third straight season. And Sumpter, a junior from San Antonio, received all-conference recognition for the second straight season at defender.

The Rattlers finished the 2006 season with a 6-8-2 overall record, but were strong down the stretch winning four of their last six games.

Women’s Soccer Players Earn Honors Deann Lopez, a junior education major from El Paso, was named ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict for her work on the field and in the classroom this season. She was one of the top players on the Rattler squad,

and an Honor Roll student and standout in the classroom with a 3.70 GPA. Margaret Kaderli and Toni Tullius were named to the All-Heartland Conference Women’s Soccer Team. Kaderli, a junior from Fredericksburg, was a first team selection at midfield, and Tullius, a junior from El Paso, was a first team pick at defender.

St. Mary’s finished the Deann Lopez 2006 season with a 10-4-5 record, just missing the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Weber Earns AllAmerican Honors Samantha Weber became the first St. Mary’s volleyball player to earn NCAA Division II All-American honors. A junior majoring in math from Fort Lupton, Colo., Weber led the Rattlers in kills per game, attack percentage and blocks per game. She was also named Samantha Weber first team All-Heartland Conference and first team AllSouthwest Region by the AVCA. Also earning All-Heartland Conference honors this season were Courtney Matula and Valerie Teter, a junior and sophomore, respectively, from San Antonio, and Sarah Moreno, a junior from Pearland. Weber and the Rattlers advanced to the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship and finished the 2006 season with a 19-16 overall record. n

Vision 2012 Propels St. Mary’s Forward With Confidence and Creativity

by Charles L. Cotrell, Ph.D., President For the past year and a half, I have reported to you a demanding yet exciting process that has been unfolding at St. Mary’s University. A document mapping our future began taking shape in May 2005 after consultations with our many stakeholders—Marianists, trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, students and alumni. From those conversations with some 500 participants, ideas began to emerge that would address St. Mary’s strengths and challenges while creating the direction of the University for the future.

We considered sacrosanct continuing the legacy of providing a superior Catholic liberal arts education in the Marianist tradition. We agreed that St. Mary’s will remain an institution of choice if we continue to provide excellent academic preparation, pursue innovative teaching, maintain current information technology, and encourage a meaningful student life.

You may recall that two years ago the Board of Trustees and University community reviewed and updated our Mission statement (which can be found on the inside front cover of this and all issues of the Gold & Blue). That statement served as our reference point while developing our vision for St. Mary’s future which, in turn, was our guidepost for writing Vision 2012, our five-year strategic plan.

Advance academic quality and innovation St. Mary’s University will strengthen and enhance academic excellence in the core curriculum and across undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs, while fostering outstanding teaching and scholarship and enhancing the cocurricular experience for all students.

Enhancing the quality of the student body and sustaining realistic growth Background Enhancing the quality of the University’s student body at the undergraduate and graduate levels is an essential part of a successful future for St. Mary’s. The University’s best opportunity for attaining an increase exists with the number of entering first-time freshmen.

Class rank and standardized test scores are nationally recognized standards of measurement, and increases in both measures are important indicators of student potential and of an increase in the quality of the undergraduate student body.

Another consideration of student body quality is diversity. St. Mary’s will recruit a balance of students from across races and ethnicities (and genders), providing a

living and learning experience that allows for crosscultural dialogue and understanding. As federal and state aid sources decline, it is increasingly important to ensure a distribution of students across all socioeconomic levels, so that a St. Mary’s education remains accessible to all who are qualified to attend.

No increased enrollment growth in the School of Law is foreseen, but opening the law school to part-time students in 2007 will have the potential of changing the student profile of those admitted to the School of Law. To increase enrollment in the Graduate School, one potentially rich opportunity is recruitment of qualified international students from China, India and other global regions in the fields of business and the sciences.

Student learning and teaching excellence Background One of the chief attributes of private colleges and universities is the innovative and effective teaching produced by small student-faculty ratios. Higher student retention, graduation, and career success are achievable in a small university context.

Outstanding teaching requires an ongoing research agenda for the faculty. Institutions that promote excellence in teaching recognize the value of research in remaining current in an academic discipline. Furthermore,

undergraduate students gain valuable insight and experience through active participation in research projects.

Institutional reputation and success are also based on curricular design and content that is Mission centered, up to date in disciplinary content, and relevant to career preparation. Hence, the faculty in each of the five schools will be called upon to examine their curricular offerings regularly.

Studies have long heralded the connection between a high degree of campus involvement and higher retention and graduation rates. Connecting curricular and cocurricular experiences and outcomes is key to overall student success and adds meaning and excitement for students as they prepare for their fields of study and eventual careers.

Goal III:

Extend boundaries St. Mary’s University will reach out to build partnerships, programs and relationships that create learning, leadership and service opportunities for students in local, national, and international settings, and design plans to engage alumni in lifelong learning and connectedness.

Background St. Mary’s location and history in San Antonio position us to provide leadership in international education in the Western Hemisphere. There already exist numerous programs that help our students learn and serve. Reaching far beyond our immediate geographic boundaries, more effective connections will be established with the Society of Mary as an active presence on all continents. Also, we will collaborate with those institutions abroad with which partnership agreements exist, and with our sister institutions, to broaden and strengthen programs that promote internationalization. Broadening our program boundaries will help students develop as compassionate leaders who strive to improve the human condition everywhere.

Because St. Mary’s is located in an older area whose neighborhoods and commercial spaces are in transition, it is critical that we become more actively involved in community outreach, development and improvement.

This can be accomplished by building or expanding on activities already being conducted by our students, faculty and staff.

We will also develop partnerships with San Antonioarea educational and research institutions, which will provide program enrichment for students who seek internship and externship opportunities.

St. Mary’s University will extend alumni boundaries beyond fund raising to include opportunities that are both meaningful to the alumni and valuable to the institution.

Alumni will be invited to more actively participate at St. Mary’s to engage them in lifelong learning and connectedness, and to further advance St. Mary’s international presence.

Parents will be encouraged to play a more active role in St. Mary’s programs and activities, and to participate in the St. Mary’s educational experience. The formation of the new Parent Association is an excellent springboard for expanded involvement.

St. Mary’s will strengthen its relationship and collaboration with the Archdiocese of San Antonio, Catholic schools, and other local religious bodies.

Assure viability St. Mary’s University will attain and grow resources necessary to ensure a secure financial future, invest in new opportunities, and attract and retain a quality student body through collaboration and building a tradition of giving among students, alumni and friends.

Background With St. Mary’s reliance on tuition and fees approaching 70 percent of the operating budget, it is only through increased fund raising that we can maintain our position as an educational institution of the highest academic caliber. It is imperative that a culture of giving be developed and nurtured among our many constituencies. To continue to attract a diverse student body, tuition increases must be regulated and reasonable.

The financial health of an institution of higher learning can be directly linked to the resources its endowment provides each student. St. Mary’s University must raise that per-student endowment income available for student scholarships to compensate for reductions in federal and state aid. Similarly,

increasing or generating new endowments for specific schools, programs, and professorships will help ensure and advance academic excellence.

Collaboration with existing support organizations can help to more effectively reach alumni groups as we seek to increase alumni giving. Concurrently, we need to establish support organizations that will affiliate with the University and assist us in developing and generating support.

St. Mary’s University will be diligent in containing cost drivers to assure good stewardship and budgetary efficiency.

Campus-wide accountability and responsibility in developing budgets and prioritizing spending are critical to accomplishing our goals.

Goal V:

Enhance facilities and technology St. Mary’s University will support and improve the educational experience of its students with innovative programming, modern facilities, and current and complementary communications and technology, all of which form the foundation for a culture of excellence.

Background Excellence in education goes far beyond quality teaching and scholarship; it incorporates the entire university campus and its environs. The Board-approved Facilities Master Plan, written and adopted in 2004, has been carefully and intentionally crafted to integrate our many learning communities— academics, arts and worship, residential living and athletics—so that our students benefit from our holistic approach to the educational experience.

The Plan takes St. Mary’s through the first quarter of this century and is divided into two phases. Currently underway is the renovation of St. Louis Hall, St. Mary’s signature building, which requires expanding the physical plant capabilities, a necessity for future construction.

During Vision 2012, the primary Phase I goal is renovation and construction of a complex for the School of Science, Engineering and Technology (SET).

Completion of the proposed 90,000-square-

foot, $25 million SET building will provide a state-of-the-art facility that will put St. Mary’s at the forefront of education in health sciences, technology and research. By continuing to grow partnerships with area health-care and technological institutions, we can impact the national shortage of engineers, computer scientists and health care specialists.

To effectively provide a superior educational experience for our students, St. Mary’s University will implement a new enterprise software system that will enhance our productivity while streamlining many work routines and processes.

St. Mary’s will ensure technology fluency for all faculty, staff and students through ongoing training programs. St. Mary’s will strive to ensure that technology resources remain current. Great opportunities exist for St. Mary’s to improve its outreach and relationships by offering more technologyrelated services.

IN SERVICE TO COUNTRY Alumni make their mark on the world through the Foreign Service

The footprints of serviceminded St. Mary’s alumni can be found all over the world, including in Honduras, Belarus, Mexico, Costa Rica, Manila, Australia, England and Romania, just to name a few. Point anywhere on a globe and you won’t be more than a few fingertips away from a place a St. Mary’s graduate has served in the U.S. Foreign Service.

While the total number of alumni who have served is difficult to gauge, today there are more than 20 St. Mary’s alumni active in the diplomatic corps – enough to get the attention of even the highest ranks of the service’s leadership.

Now-retired Ambassador W. Robert Pearson visited San Antonio in 2005 as director of the U.S. Foreign Service. During that visit, he praised St. Mary’s graduates for their diplomatic service, and even today Pearson recognizes the contributions St. Mary’s alumni make as diplomats.

“I recall that St. Mary’s had a unique record of success for the Foreign Service in terms of the numbers [compared to] the student body,” Pearson wrote in a recent e-

mail. “I expressed my appreciation to the [University] president for the long and distinguished record of service by St. Mary’s graduates to the Foreign Service of the United States and our commitment to continue to work closely with St. Mary’s as we increased the diversity of the Foreign Service.”

The Foreign Service is the diplomatic arm of the U.S. State Department, and its officers advocate American foreign policy, protect American citizens and assist American business worldwide. It’s a challenging and rewarding call that many St. Mary’s graduates have felt drawn to answer.

‘Room at the Table’ Larry Hufford, Ph.D., a professor in the graduate international relations program, has seen students’ interest and success in the Foreign Service increase over the years.

“St. Mary’s has always been a university that encourages public service, so we have students who really have that as one of their goals,” Hufford said. But having the right people on campus to give students a full picture of their options is where having retired U.S. Ambassador Eugene Scassa has made a difference.

Scassa retired from the Foreign Service in 1997 and recently returned to the University as international scholar-in-residence. A former ambassador to Belize, Scassa had previously served as a State Department diplomat-in-residence at St. Mary’s. During that time, he made a habit of inviting high-level Foreign Service officers to campus to lecture and interact with students interested in diplomatic careers.

adventure, so it’s all about letting the young people learn of the opportunities. The role we play is to let them know what is possible,” he said.

If Scassa sounds a bit like a recruiter, in a way he is. In fact, many of the recent St. Mary’s alumni serving in the Foreign Service attribute their decision directly to Scassa’s influence. And although many have studied international relations, not all take that path. “We try to encourage everyone and all majors that there is room at the table. Everyone can do some things well; many people can do many things well.”

Anne Ohlrich (J.D. ’98) was in her third year at St. Mary’s School of Law when she first met Scassa and he encouraged her to consider foreign service. Just a few months later, Ohlrich took the bar exam and the Foreign Service written exam within days of each other, passing both. By April 1999, Ohlrich and her family were on their way to London for her first diplomatic assignment.

Ohlrich also was assigned to Brazil, Washington, D.C., and Mexico during her seven years in the Foreign Service.

In 2005, she joined

the St. Mary’s faculty as a visiting professor teaching in the graduate international relations program, adding another direct link between public service, the Foreign Service and St. Mary’s students.

Sense of Community, Adventure Speaking from the perspective of both a former Foreign Service officer and a current faculty member, Ohlrich said that service-mindedness is the common thread among those who choose the diplomatic corps.

“Being in the Foreign Service is all about helping Americans overseas. A lot of things that St. Mary’s stands for – that connection, that sense of community and service –

are embodied in the Foreign Service. It may sound cliché, but St. Mary’s is really a breeding ground for the Foreign Service,” she said.

The University’s strong emphasis on internationalization and studying abroad are factors as well, Ohlrich pointed out. “There is a real sense of adventure that St. Mary’s encourages.

It is not just about service to our community but about developing a broader sense of community.”

Wanting to join is not enough to open the doors to the State Department, and the process of applying is a formidable task. The

Foreign Service exam, which includes both written and oral phases, is extremely challenging, difficult to study for, and takes stock of characteristics such as dedication, leadership skills, critical-thinking abilities, perceptiveness and creativity.

Those who pursue a career in the diplomatic corps must be ready for travel virtually anywhere in the world, and often they must learn a new language before their first mission. It is a rewarding but challenging profession, with most assignments overseas and transfers to new posts every few years.

De Mars said her time as a student at St. Mary’s helped prepare her for her many roles as a foreign service officer.

The Foundation for Success Benjamin A. Montañez attended St. Mary’s for two years before winning the prestigious Woodrow Wilson Foreign Affairs Fellowship (now the Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship) and transferring to Georgetown University. He graduated from Georgetown in 2002 and went on to earn graduate degrees from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and the University of St. Andrew’s School of Management in Scotland. He has degrees from three world-renowned institutions, but credits St. Mary’s with setting the course for his success.

“My time at St. Mary’s was the first time I was in an environment with other academically minded individuals.

My professors were willing to spend time with me, and I had the opportunity to open up and get involved in student government and other clubs and organizations. I would have never made it at Georgetown if I hadn’t gone to St. Mary’s first,” Montañez said.

Consulate General in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. “Each day in the Foreign Service really is different. I work many hours, but I am having fun and learning a lot,” he said.

John Moor (B.A. ’71, M.S. ’75) felt the call to the Foreign Service soon after the terror attacks of Sept. 11. “I was motivated by 9/11 and wanted to contribute in some way,” said Moor, who is on his first overseas assignment in Bucharest, Romania, as a political officer and human rights specialist.

Moor said St. Mary’s has given him a solid foundation for his work. “I received an excellent education at St. Mary’s. I didn’t realize just how good until I came up against graduates from other schools like UC Berkeley, USC, Harvard and Yale, and found I competed well against them.”

Caron De Mars (M.B.A. ’94) had a successful career as a mid-level manager at USAA when she got the idea that the Foreign Service might be a good fit for her. Today, she is an economic officer in Manila, Philippines, working on issues related to environment, science and technology, and every day is different.

One week, she was organizing a broadband seminar for Filipino telecom policymakers. The next week, she was finalizing an oil spill remediation conference sponsored by National Geographic.

“I love living abroad and learning about new cultures,” said De Mars, who counts Ambassador Scassa among her mentors. “I am in constant contact with the most amazing people on the planet.”

A Message of Service Nancy Szalwinski (M.A. ’95) was the evening studies director at St. Mary’s when she first became interested in the Foreign Service. She is now a cultural affairs officer at the U.S. Embassy in San Jose, Costa Rica, and has previously been assigned to

Minsk, Belarus, and Canberra, Australia. She credits both Ambassador Scassa and the Marianist tradition of service with contributing to her success.

“I believe in the biblical admonition that much is expected from those to whom much has been given. That message of service was part of the fabric of daily life at St. Mary’s and continues to be central to my work as a diplomat,” Szalwinski said.

In keeping with that philosophy, Szalwinski uses her down time to get involved in the community in which she lives through organizations such as Habitat for Humanity. “As I learned in the harsh climate of Belarus as well as the temperate climates of Australia and Costa Rica, the most effective diplomatic efforts are people-topeople.”

Matthew Jones graduated in December with a degree in international relations and hopes to follow the career path of the others who have joined the Foreign Service.

Jones is going through the arduous application process now, and feels his experience – educational and spiritual – at St. Mary’s has prepared him well for the challenge. He credits his professors, including Hufford and the Rev. Norbert Brockman, S.M., Ph.D., with challenging and supporting him, but said it’s the Marianist influence that really made the difference.

“Inevitably, the Marianist values played a role, particularly the everpresent emphasis on service. Foreign Service officers certainly don’t make a fortune, but they play a vital role as public servants to our country.” Jones said. “I need to feel that my work serves a higher purpose; that what I’m doing in my life affects meaningful, positive change in this world.” n

Freshman Recognized by Oprah Winfrey Jean Choo

One day after Jean Choo turned 18, the caller ID on her phone read H-AR-P-O but she assumed it was another credit card solicitor. Luckily, her younger brother picked up the phone.

The person on the other end was a representative of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” who was calling to let Choo know that she had won Winfrey’s National High School Essay Contest.

The topic of the essay was: “Why is Elie Wiesel’s book, Night, relevant today?” Choo had read the book a few years earlier and was immediately interested in the essay contest when her high school English teacher announced the contest details in class.

Choo, a biochemistry major and Honors Program scholar at St. Mary’s, said she entered the contest because she had a true concern for the Holocaust and victims of genocide, which is the subject of many of her reading choices. “(The book) makes you realize how valuable human life is,” said Choo, who

was one of 50 winners from the 50,000 students who entered the contest. She won a $5,000 scholarship from AT&T, and Winfrey matched it.

Night, an Oprah’s Book Club selection, is a novel based on Elie Wiesel’s time spent in Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Plagued by guilt for surviving, the author (pictured with Winfrey and Choo) attempts to answer why God let the Holocaust happen and remind people of the terrible things that happened in the “death” camps so they will never forget.

“In an instant people lost everything they had,” Choo said. “It is something not to be forgotten, and people too often forget.”

Like Wiesel, Choo and her family immigrated to the United States in search of a better life. Choo, originally from South Korea, moved to El Paso when she was in the third grade. She, too, believes the memory of the Holocaust should live on and serve to prevent such future occurrences.

“I want to be remembered for humanitarian causes. Right now, I donate money, but money is small. I want to physically be there.”

In the future, Choo plans on working with Doctors Without Borders, a medical program that delivers aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, disasters and/or exclusion from health care.

Choo’s compassion toward others and the cause to end all genocides will continue to blossom at St. Mary’s where community service and the wellbeing of others are important for the growth of future leaders.

Alum’s Lifelong Service Generates Scholarship Albert Rogers, M.D. (CL ’37)

Albert Rogers knows what it means to serve—whether it is his patients or his country. To fulfill a lifelong promise to give back to the community, Rogers turned his service efforts toward his alma mater.

Rogers entered St. Mary’s University in the 1930s, along with his two brothers, Edgar and Will, receiving scholarships as musicians at St. Mary’s where they played in the band and orchestra.

The Rogers brothers may have chosen St. Mary’s because it was the one place they could afford to go. But it turned out to be one of the best decisions they made, Rogers said. At St. Mary’s, he took chemistry classes from Brother Edward Collignon, S.M., someone who had “all the qualities of a great man,” according to Rogers.

Collignon taught all of the chemistry classes at St. Mary’s at the time. “He had a knack for teaching the subject in a way that helped you retain the knowledge,” he said.

Collignon’s outstanding teaching skills and encouragement motivated Rogers to apply to medical school after only three years at St. Mary’s. He was accepted at Baylor Medical School even though he did not have a degree from St. Mary’s. He only lacks one civics course necessary to complete his bachelor’s degree.

Throughout the years, Rogers never forgot the man who played such an important role in his life. It was Collignon who inspired Rogers to be a dedicated doctor and serviceman.

After medical school, Rogers entered the Army and served during World War II in Africa, Italy, and France. It was while in France that Rogers earned the Bronze Star for organizing the first blood bank used by the U.S. Army. He was responsible for creating a system for drawing blood and distributing it to frontline hospitals at a time when 5,000 units of blood was needed each week.

In 2002, Rogers fulfilled a commitment he made to himself many years ago—to give back to St. Mary’s.

That year, he established the Brother Edward Collignon Memorial Scholarship in Biochemistry. Not only does the scholarship benefit current St. Mary’s students, it serves as a permanent memorial to a man who meant so much to Rogers and other students. Rogers describes Collignon as “one of the best educators I have ever known.”

Rogers hopes the scholarship will inspire student recipients to serve their community and country in similar ways.

Brother Victor A. Naegele, S.M., died on Jan. 29, 2007, at the age of 88 and in the 71st year of his religious profession.

A Chicago native, Naegele professed first vows in 1936. He then began his teaching career at McBride High School in St. Louis. After teaching in high schools in the Midwest ranging from San Antonio to Milwaukee, Naegele joined the faculty of the sociology department at St. Mary’s in 1964 where he remained until 1978. He earned a M.A. in marriage and family therapy at St. Mary’s in 1983 before becoming director of the Family Life Center of Thomas More High School in Milwaukee. He retired to the Marianist Residence in 1989.

Robert V. West Jr., Ph.D.

Robert V. West Jr., a St. Mary’s University Trustee from 1986 to 1988, died Nov. 16, 2006, at the age of 85.

With a modest investment of $1,000, West started San Antonio-based Tesoro Petroleum Corp., and under his leadership, the company grew from a small regional firm into one of the largest independent oil companies in the United States and was the first San Antonio company named to the Fortune 500 list. West retired from Tesoro in 1992 as its chairman of the board and CEO.

Message from the President On behalf of St. Mary’s University, I want to thank our

alumni, friends, and corporate and foundation donors for their generosity and support in 2006.

Vision 2012 and the Future We had much to be thankful for last year, and now the future beckons with the completion of a new five-year strategic plan. This past year was spent consulting our many stakeholders, resulting in Vision 2012, our plan for the future that will invigorate St. Mary’s and strengthen its heritage as an academically outstanding Catholic and Marianist liberal arts institution. It is through your kind efforts that the culture of excellence continues to proudly distinguish our University.

Last year was a phenomenal time in St. Mary’s history, beginning with an unprecedented $25 million gift from founder of Valero Energy Corp. Bill Greehey to endow the business school and concluding with the construction of the Barrett Memorial Bell Tower, which stands as a beacon of excellence, pride and tradition on campus.

We appreciate the continued commitment to scholarships of all of our alumni and friends whose contributions ensure that the St. Mary’s experience remains affordable and accessible to today’s students and future generations.

Shaping Student Success Your kind support provides students with scholarship opportunities and allows the University to strengthen the academic quality that places St. Mary’s at the forefront of higher education.

Undergraduate research continues to thrive with the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and Creative Activities Exhibition, which showcased more than 180 projects in the sciences and liberal arts last year, and also generated similar efforts in the Graduate School.

The Graduate School and the School of Law began developing innovative opportunities for students to reach their educational goals. The Graduate School now offers an accelerated program that combines bachelor’s and master’s degree programs for qualified students who want to complete two degrees simultaneously. The law school’s evening program, which will start this coming fall, serves our community by providing accessibility to legal education to those who cannot attend day classes.

We are committed to offering educational programs that contribute to and enrich our community, our state, our nation and the world. Last fall a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente of Guadalajara, Mexico, to promote academic connections and enrich cultural understanding between our country and Mexico. Other agreements are being planned with universities in Asia and Europe to bring more international students to campus.

These are some of the new initiatives that distinguish St. Mary’s. Because of your support, students will continue to be well-prepared for their future careers in an increasingly interdependent world.

Living the Legacy Last year, St. Mary’s made further strides to foster its legacy of success.

In March 2006, the naming of the Bill Greehey School of Business honored Greehey’s extraordinary leadership in the global business community and signaled the school’s unprecedented transformation of business education in San Antonio and beyond.

During the year, an outpouring of goodwill came forth for a new high-tech courtroom. Made possible by a lead gift from the AT&T Foundation and other foundation and donor support, the courtroom is a beautifully designed facility with 21st century technology components and outreach.

The St. Louis Hall Renovation Project to revitalize St. Mary’s original building—the hallmark of our noble institution—has gained momentum and we anxiously await its completion.

Donors’ Generosity Produces Record Year in Fund Raising

t. Mary’s experienced an extraordinary year in fund raising in 20052006, thanks to all of you who continue to invest in the mission of our institution.

In March 2006, the University received the largest single cash gift ever bestowed on a San Antonio university and one of the largest gifts recorded in higher education in the nation. Bill Greehey’s $25 million endowment instantly lifted our business school to national prominence. The scholarships, technology and faculty development the gift provides will enhance the Bill Greehey School of Business as well as provide funding into perpetuity for St. Mary’s. Thanks again, Bill!

St. Mary’s Fund Surpasses Goal The St. Mary’s Fund hit a new record, raising more than $500,000 in unrestricted dollars. We continue to see increased support from our alumni for the St. Mary’s Fund. Thanks to all of the student callers who spend many

On Feb. 9, we dedicated the Barrett Memorial Bell Tower, named in honor of the mother and son of alumnus and lead donor, Charles T. Barrett Jr. (B.B.A. ’62). It is a beautiful addition to the St. Mary’s campus. We are grateful to Mr. Barrett and his wife, Melissa, for their generosity in making a longtime dream a reality.

Since 1998, Continuing the Heritage Service Day has celebrated the service tradition of the Marianists. On Jan. 27, almost 300 students, parents, faculty, staff and alumni—the largest group ever—worked side by side to serve the needs of our campus and surrounding neighborhood.

Alumni were extended a special invitation to participate this year. Led

by St. Mary’s University Alumni Association President Ed Boyle (B.B.A. ’71), graduates joined in service efforts, including brush pick-up, graffiti cleanup, painting, visiting the elderly and more.

Volunteers were easily identified by their ‘God’s Handiwork’ T-shirts generously donated by Robby and Tami Burge, the proud parents of daughter Casey, a freshman from Victoria.

Continuing the Heritage is sponsored by the Service Learning Center and the Marianist Leadership Program. St. Mary’s partnered closely with both nearby Holy Rosary Parish and the University Park Neighborhood Association to identify areas most in need of service.
