Letter from the Headmaster GARHETT WAGERS

Dear St. Mark’s Families and Friends, Each year, I become more impressed with the community we have at St. Mark’s. While it is true that many of our families live in the surrounding neighborhoods, there are also many who commute from some distance. But the word community refers to more than geographical proximity; I feel it speaks to the values of its culture. You can see in this report that the generosity of our families is providing St. Mark’s with the means required to accomplish our goals. 4

A great school requires a strong internal infrastructure and is built on the support of wonderful teachers. We make a commitment to professional development that recognizes each teacher’s growth as an individual, just like our individualized education approach with each of our students. A positive community environment that inspires curiosity is supported also by the continued improvement of our physical facilities, as well as the expansion of technology-based resources. From the inviting turf of our field, to the interactive Mimio centers in our kindergarten class, to the innovative one-to-one iPad program

in middle school, we continue to build an environment that inspires learning and growth. I want to highlight a special area of this report. For the first time this past year, we chose to feature a specific area of need in our Annual Fund. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and we were able to provide an extraordinary amount of resources and funding for our science program across many grade levels. This exciting project highlights another way that our community responds and engages in a major way when called upon.

I thank you all your generous gifts this past year and for the support you provide our school. I hope you enjoy this report as it provides a clear and visual representation of our priorities: quality teaching, an environment that inspires curiosity, and curriculum and technology resources that enhance the learning experience. Garhett Wagers Headmaster

Letter from the Board Chairman

Board of Trustees 2013 - 2014

The Rev. Patrick Miller, Rector

SHERYL GUSSETT Dear Parents and Friends, Serving as the Chairman for the Board of Trustees at St. Mark’s has been an incredible experience. Over the past three years, I have watched our school experience success and tremendous change. The 2013-2014 school year for St. Mark’s was another productive and successful year for our school and our children. This important document, the Annual Report, is one of the ways that we say thank you to our families. I continue to be amazed by the St. Mark’s community. The 2013-2014 Annual Fund was the best campaign in school history; 89% of our parent population contributed to the Annual Fund, totaling $327,323.89. Our enrollment remains a source of pride; we started in the Fall of 2013 with 432 students. Our school is growing by leaps and bounds, much like our students. Because of the incredible generosity of our families, as well as our healthy enrollment, we were able to complete many projects for our school to meet our growing needs.

6

ST. MARK’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

For the first time this year, the Annual Fund allocated support for improvements to the Science labs and curriculum, as well as Performing Arts. New speakers and automatic basketball goals were installed in the gym to enhance our performance and play space. Upon returning to campus this Fall, our families were greeted with a renewed and renovated courtyard. Finally, directional signage was installed around campus to make visitors feel more comfortable and welcome. These physical changes to our space are incredible reminders of the growth that takes place at St. Mark’s every day. As parents, trustees, and stewards of the school, we provide a foundation of support. As you read the pages that follow, I hope you will share my sense of pride in our school. Your generous gifts and support allow us to continue to make St. Mark’s the very best place for our children. Sheryl Gussett Board Chairman

432 STUDENTS WERE ENROLLED OPENING DAY FOR THE 2013 - 2014 SCHOOL YEAR. THAT’S 54 MORE STUDENTS IN JUST FIVE YEARS.

This is truly an exciting time to be at St. Mark’s. One of the ways that we have continued to grow in 2013-14 was our enrollment. We are delighted to report that we started the school year with 432 students. In addition, we continue to experience an exponential increase in the amount of inquiries and interest in our school. At St. Mark’s, we emphasize serving the whole child while offering a rigorous academic curriculum. We actively nurture the development of personal autonomy and agency in all of our students so they may develop into independent learners and thinkers. St. Mark’s is a second home to families who strive to partner with their child’s school, truly creating a community engaged.

Booster Club A COMMUNITY ENGAGED

The St. Mark’s Booster Club is the primary way to support athletics on our campus. Students in 6th grade and above are given the opportunity to participate in competitive team sports including volleyball, soccer, basketball, track, tennis and golf. The Booster Club helps support our students and the Athletic Department through fundraising and planning special events. In addition, Booster Club volunteers maintain and operate the concession stand, help with score-table tasks, and host tournament hospitality rooms at all home events. The Booster Club is an important part of the St. Mark’s community, and our teams directly benefit from their commitment. Over the years, the Booster Club has funded or contributed to the following: • Sharing the costs of bus transportation for selected away games • Custom St. Mark’s sideline team chairs for athletic events • New uniforms for teams on a rotating schedule • Family nights and Sports Banquet events • Decorations for student athlete lockers, and all booster events • Countless hours of volunteer support for home games and tournaments

The money raised from Book Fairs benefits our students. The lower and upper libraries added hundreds of new books and titles to their collections this past year as a result of these funds. In addition, the libraries benefit from a partnership with the Parent Guild to bring visiting authors to our campus. In 2013-14 we welcomed Nancy Tillman, Sarah Mlynowski, and Margaret Haddix. For our youngest students, the library hosted Carranza Puppets for a performance of “The Three Little Pigs.”

Awards and Honors A COMMUNITY ENGAGED

SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE • 1st Place: 4th Grader Monique Hoarau • 2nd Place: 8th Grader Daniela Rumbaut • 3rd Place: 4th Grader Stella Bogers NATIONAL SPANISH EXAM Congratulations to thirty-five of our 8th Grade Spanish students who attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2014 National Spanish Examinations. Students from St. Mark’s Episcopal School earned a total of 7 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals along with 14 honorable mentions. One student, Pierce Hollier, scored 392 out of 400 questions, scoring in the 99th 46

percentile. Not only did Pierce shatter the school record, but he also scored the third highest on the level one test in the entire United States. “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 154,000 students participating in 2014.” Students from St. Marks have a long history of high achievement on these exams and were taught by Spanish teachers, Graciela Cuellar, Christine Anderson and Scott Basso. The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6 through 12, and are sponsored

by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. NOETIC LEARNING MATH CONTEST On April 11, twenty-two 3rd Grade students competed in the Noetic Learning Math Contest, a national elementary math problem solving contest held twice a year. In this year’s spring contest, 25,166 young mathletes representing 1,377 teams across the country participated. St. Mark’s is proud to announce that 3rd Grader Jackson Parker was named as the team winner, scoring 80% on the contest. Thirteen St. Mark’s students received National Honorable Mention, which is awarded to approximately the top 50% of participating mathletes.

Congratulations to all the winners! The contest results demonstrate our students’ great problem solving skills and math talents.
