I always like to remember when six years ago I met one of the greatest connoisseurs and Monsignor of Art, Sam Keller. At that time I told him about my idea of creating an Art Summer Festival in St. Moritz, Engadin. My idea was a festival defined by quality and culture: something that would make a difference. He was very positive and gave me his support. It was a crucial point and I contacted my friends: Valery Gergiev, Paulo Coelho, Roland Berger, Franca Sozzani, Madame Yoyo Maeght, Jürg Marquard, … and many others. They supported me and gave me their blessing. This is how I started this special summer festival: St. Moritz Art Masters. For four years now, surrounded by those beautiful mountains, gorgeous lakes and great people, St. Moritz Art Masters has become reality every summer. This year the Cartier Foundation is supporting us with some special works of art by a very special artist: Adriana Varejão. It’s the cherry on the cake of the vision of Brazilian art and culture. We are honored to have this Brazilian spirit in St. Moritz and the Engadin.

A very warm welcome to St. Moritz and the Engadin and to our unique event St. Moritz Art Masters 2012. I am very proud to present you this year’s art program that has been put together by our curator Reiner Opoku and his team. This year we have invited a group of BRAZILIAN artists to exhibit their works in the Engadin: Adriana Varejão, Vik Muniz, Carlito Carvalhosa, Thiago Rocha Pitta, Roberto Cabot and Pedro Wirz will enchant the region for ten days. The great architect Oscar Niemeyer is also represented with the only house built in Switzerland at the lake of St. Moritz, and his great grandson Paulo Sergio Niemeyer will represent the family with his beautiful design objects.

Monty Shadow & Sam Keller We are also very proud to announce that our partners exhibit their art collections during St. Moritz Art Masters: the Daimler art collection is exhibiting œuvres of Tom Sachs, and Bank Julius Baer is showing in their local branch and in the Paracelsus Building the Swiss artist duo Lutz & Guggisberg with unique œuvres, especially realized for St. Moritz Art Masters. Our thanks go to our generous partners: Cartier, Mercedes-Benz and Julius Baer for their support of this event and entrusting us each year with the organization of both the main event and the side programs which accompany it. It is an honor and a joy to see our Brazilian artists in St. Moritz Art Masters 2012, a visionary idea now becoming more and more important – thanks to its creator, Monty Shadow. To be an artist is one of the most solitary activities in the world. We face the empty canvas, the blank screen of a computer, the silence of the Universe that is ready to receive a painting, a song, a text. There we are, navigating on the unknown ocean of our soul, and we see a few islands – ideas that we have developed and which are ripe to be explored. Then we climb into a boat – the ink, the pen, the instrument – and set out for the nearest island. On the way, we meet strong currents, winds and storms, but we keep rowing, exhausted, knowing that we have drifted away from the chosen course and that the island we were trying to reach is no longer on the horizon. We can’t turn back, though, we have to continue somehow or else we’ll be lost in the middle of the ocean. At that point, a series of terrifying scenarios flash through our mind, but we have no choice, we must continue to create until we die, we must not allow ourselves to get caught in such traps as success or failure. Otherwise, what meaning

do our lives have? Being able to buy an old mill in the south of France and tending a garden? Giving lectures instead, because it’s easier to talk than to create? Withdrawing from the world in a calculated, mysterious way, in order to create a legend that will deprive us of many pleasures? At this point, we don’t worry anymore about getting lost at sea. It’s discovering our own untold story and trying to share it with others. It’s realizing, when you show it to people you have never seen, what is in your own soul. And it is a constant source of surprise to us to discover that other people were also in search of that very island and that they find it in a work of art. One person tells another person about it, the mysterious chain grows, and what the artist thought of as a solitary exercise becomes a bridge, a boat, a means by which souls can travel and communicate. ENGADIN ARt TALKS VISIONS FOR THE ALPS Zum dritten Mal in Folge findet am Wochenende 25. und 26. August das Kunst- und Architektursymposium Engadin Art Talks statt. Wir freuen uns sehr, in diesem Jahr Gast im Lyceum Alpinum sein zu dürfen! Für diesen August haben wir Künstler, Designer und Architekten eingeladen, um über das Thema „Visions for the Alps“ zu sprechen. Die Teilnehmer werden über Visionen und Projekte diskutieren und philosophieren, die für die Berge erdacht oder in den Bergen erträumt wurden. Wir freuen uns schon jetzt auf ein Zusammentreffen alter Grössen und junger Namen, einen regen Dialog und spannenende Gespräche. Uns liegt ein persönlicher Austausch zwischen Publikum und Teilnehmern sehr am Herzen. Nicht zuletzt durch den ungezwungenen Rahmen und einen öffentlichen Aperó am Samstag Abend möchten wir diesen möglich machen und fördern.

Die Vorträge werden auf Deutsch oder Englisch gehalten. Der Eintritt ist frei! Die Engadin Art Talks wurden 2010 von der Zürcher Verlegerin und Sammlerin Cristina Bechtler ins Leben gerufen. Ihr Ziel ist es, einen temporären Ort für einen Dialog der Künste zu schaffen und somit die Geschichte des Engadins als Ort des konzentrierten Denkens und des Gesprächs fortzusetzen. Als künstlerische Leiter konnte Cristina Bechtler die renommierten Kuratoren Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-Direktor für Ausstellungen und Programm sowie Direktor der internationalen Projekte an der Serpentine Gallery in London und Beatrix Ruf, Direktorin Kunsthalle Zürich, gewinnen. Schon nach zwei Jahren können die Engadin Art Talks auf eine illustre Teilnehmerrunde zurückblicken: Künstler und Architekten, die sich davon begeistern liessen, für ein Wochenende ins Engadin zu kommen und über ihre Arbeit unter verschiedenen Fragestellungen zu sprechen – darunter Doug Aitken, Nairy Baghramian, Sarah Morris, Lawrence Weiner, Cerith Wyn Evans und Peter Zumthor.

VISIONS FOR THE ALPS The Engadin Art Talks, a symposium on art and architecture, is taking place for the third time on 25 and 26 August 2012. We are especially pleased to be guests of the Lyceum Alpinum! This year we have invited artists, designers and architects to talk about their “Visions for the Alps”. Participants will discuss and philosophize on visions and projects that have been conceived for the mountains or inspired by them. We look forward with great pleasure to meeting with great, familiar names and younger contributors, to animated conversations and exciting debate – and above all to the personal exchange between audience and speakers. We want to encourage and make this possible by inviting the public to join us for drinks and snacks on Saturday evening. The talks will be held in German or English. Admission is free! The Engadin Art Talks were initiated in 2010 by the publisher and collector Cristina Bechtler from Zürich. It is her aim to create

a temporary site for a dialogue on art in keeping with the history of the Engadin as a place congenial to concentrated thinking and lively conversation. Cristina Bechtler has been able to secure the renowned curators Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director of Exhibitions and Programme at the Serpentine Gallery in London, and Beatrix Ruf, Director of the Kunsthalle Zürich, as artistic directors. After only two years, the Engadin Art Talks can already look back on a roster of starstudded participants: artists and architects who enthusiastically accepted the invitation to spend a weekend in the Engadin to talk about various aspects of their work, among them Doug Aitken, Nairy Baghramian, Sarah Morris, Lawrence Weiner, Cerith Wyn Evans and Peter Zumthor. für mich ist es eine grosse Freude Sie in diesem Jahr zu einer besonderen Ausgabe des St. Moritz Art Masters einzuladen. Das SAM wird fünf Jahre alt! Das Festival, das in dieser Form doch einmalig ist, hat sich über die Jahre für viele als fester Bestandteil des Kunstkalenders im Sommer etabliert. Die Mischung aus nationalen und internationalen Ausstellungen zeitgenössischer Künstler, Art Talks, Workshops und Abendveranstaltungen hat Menschen aus allen Teilen der Welt ins Engadin gelockt, um die Natur und die Kunst in der Region zu erleben. Über die Jahre haben wir Hunderte von Künstlern und Kunstschaffende eingeladen, die ihre Spuren hinterlassen haben und ihrerseits die Region und deren kulturelle Eigenschaften kennen gelernt haben. In diesem Jahr werden wir einen besonderen Fokus auf die Kunst und Kultur aus Brasilien legen, neben den vielen anderen Ausstellungs-Konzepten und Veranstaltungen. Auslöser für diese Sonderausstellung ist die Fertigstellung des ersten Gebäudes des grossartigen Architekten Oscar Niemeyer, das er in der Schweiz realisiert hat, am St. Moritzsee. Darüber hinaus hat sich in den letzten Jahren ein reger Austausch zwischen der Schweiz und Brasilien im Bereich des Tourismus und

I am pleased to present you a very special edition of St. Moritz Art Masters. SAM turns five years old this year! The festival is unique and has established itself as an integral part of the art calendar in summertime. The mixture of national and international exhibitions of contemporary artists, art talks, workshops and evening events has brought many people from all over the world to the Engadin to enjoy nature and art in this region. Over the years we have invited hundreds of artists and art lovers to leave their traces und to discover the region and its cultural characteristics. This year we focus on art and culture from Brazil, besides many other exhibition concepts and events. The reason for this special exhibition is the completion of the first building of the great Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer in Switzerland at the lake of St. Moritz. Another reason for this occasion is the vivid exchange between Switzerland and Brazil in the sectors of tourism and economy. The Brazilian art scene is also a leading nation in the international art world. We tried hard to get some exciting positions of young and established artists from Brazil. We invited them to the Engadin to realize projects there.

Our special thank-you goes to all people who are involved, as well as to the institutions and sponsors who believed in our vision from the start and who supported us spiritually, financially and with advice, to present the region to a broad public. Die Bronze “Tai Chi Penguin” (2012) ist eine grössere Version einer früheren Arbeit von 1986 und wurde in China gemacht. Die anderen beiden Skulpturen sind “Marte” (1994) und “Pneumokariatide” (2006). “Marte”, welche in Mexiko hergestellt wurde, ist das genaue Gegenteil des glatten und kuscheligen Pinguins. Sie wurde nicht durch die Wölbung der Hände, sondern mit Lineal und Zirkel erdacht. Die Figur ist aus einem Kern zusammengesetzt, der als dreidimensionales Kreuz funktioniert, der in sechs Schildern mit ringsum sechs Seiten endet. Die dritte Skulptur “Pneumokariatide” wurde in Italien gemacht und ist ein weiterer Aspekt seines Œuvres. Die Bronze Karyatide unterstützt nichts als die Luft über ihr. Der brasilianische Künstler Saint Clair Cemin bezieht sich auf den Anthropologen und Philosophen Gregory Bateson, welcher der Meinung ist, dass zwei Ansichten besser sind als eine, weil wir zwei Augen haben, die es uns ermöglichen, dreidimensional zu sehen. Mehrere Perspektiven bereichern unsere Wahrnehmung der Welt.

The bronze “Tai Chi Penguin” (2012) is a taller version of an early piece of 1986 and was made in China. The other two sculptures are called “Marte” (1994) and “Pneumokariatide” (2006). “Marte”, made in Mexico, is the total opposite of the smooth and cuddly penguin. It was not conceived in the concavity of hands, but drawn with ruler and compass. This piece is composed of a core that functions as a threedimensional cross that ends in six shields around its six sides. The third sculpture “Pneumokariatide”, made in Italy, is yet another aspect of his work. It is a bronze caryatid that supports nothing, just the air above itself. The Brazilian artist Saint Clair Cemin refers to the anthropologist and philosopher Gregory Bateson who explained that two views are better than one, and that we are able to see in three dimensions because we have two eyes. More points of view enrich our perception of the world.

„Wann immer jemand wissen möchte, ob ein Kunstwerk echt ist, wird er als erstes die Rückseite ansehen. Das ist der Teil der normalerweise unsichtbar bleibt, ausser für Experten, Händler, Museumskonservatoren oder für den Künstler selbst. Während das Bild für immer gleich bleibt, zeigt die Rückseite seine fortwährenden Änderungen, erzählt seine Geschichten und Wunden, die Aufkleber und die wiederkehrenden Klischees. Als mir mein Cousin erzählte, sein Siebenjähriger könne einen Picasso malen, antwortete ich ihm: Wahrscheinlich schon, aber er könnte nicht die Rückseite schaffen.“ Seit über 20 Jahren definiert Muniz Kunst als subtile Verbindung zwischen Verstand und Belang durch die Schaffung von ikonischen Bildern und der gleichzeitigen Enthüllung und Entwertung ihres Entstehungsprozesses. Verso besteht aus einer Gruppe von dreidimensionalen Trompe-l’Œils, welche die Rückseiten von bekannten Werken wie Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, Van Gogh’s Sternennacht und Seurat’s La Grande Jatte zeigen, die Muniz in einem Zeitraum von über sechs Jahren systematisch photographiert und studiert hat.

“Whenever someone wants to see if an artwork is ‘real’, the first gesture is to look at its back or at it’s base; the part of it that normally isn’t visible to anyone but experts, dealers, museum conservators or the artists themselves. This happens because while the image’s objective is to remain eternally the same, its support is constantly changing, telling its story, showing its scars, its labels and periodic clichés. So when a cousin of mine told me his 7-year old could paint a Picasso, I told him ‘probably, but he couldn’t do the back’.” For over 20 years Muniz has consistently defined art as a subtle connection between mind and matter by recreating iconic images while simultaneously revealing and debasing the process of their making. Verso consists of a group of 3-dimensional trompel’œils of the actual backs of such iconic works as Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Seurat’s La Grande Jatte that, over a period of six years, Muniz photographed and systematically studied.

Tom Sachs verehrt den rituellen Akt der Arbeit an sich. Die Skulpturen und Gemälde, die er schafft, sind Werkzeuge seiner Andacht. Er spricht die Konzeption, die Produktion, den Konsum und den Kreislauf der heutigen Kreativität durch die Umgestaltung der Welt durch einfache Dinge an. Der Künstler benutzt Sperrholz, Hartschaumplatten, synthetische Polymer-Farbe, Eisenware und gefundene oder erstandene Objekte, welche er für seine eigenen Zwecke regeneriert. Jede Arbeit erscheint ungeschliffen und reflektiert Sachs Erforschung von Bricolage oder einer „Do it yourself“Ästhetik. Ohne den Versuch diesen Prozess zu verbergen zeigt Sachs seine Arbeiten durch die Betonung der Gegenwart der menschlichen Hand, die den Beobachter daran erinnert, dass Arbeit involviert war. Er verwendet eine Auswahl von historischen Objekten, beliebten Konsumprodukten, kulturelle Ikonografien und Beschilderungen: das Raytheon Logo, die Mondfähre Apollo 11, die Dollarnote und die animierten Charaktere Hello Kitty und Miffy.

Tom Sachs has a reverence for the ritual act of work itself, and the sculptures and paintings he creates are artifacts of his devotion. He addresses the conception, production, consumption and circulation of modern-day creativity by refashioning the world out of simple stuff. The artist uses plywood, foamcore, synthetic polymer paint, hardware, and found or scavenged objects which he reclaims for his own purposes. Each work’s rough-hewn appearance reflects Sachs’ exploration of bricolage, or a “do-it-yourself” aesthetic. With no attempt to mask his process, Sachs “shows his work” by emphasizing the presence of the human hand, reminding the viewer of the labor involved. He appropriates a range of historic objects, popular consumer products, cultural iconography, and signage – Raytheon logos, the Apollo 11 Lunar Module, the U.S. dollar bill, and animated characters Hello Kitty and Miffy.

Das jüngste Projekt des Architekten, Städteplaners und Designers Paulo Sergio Niemeyer ist die Chaise „Rio“, welche von einem Zuckerhut inspiriert ist. Sein Ziel war es ein Ergebnis zu erreichen, welches es fertig bringt, den Stil der visuellen Kommunikation eines globalen Anliegens hervorzurufen. Das Verständnis der möglichen Eigenschaften von Leichtigkeit und Windungen lassen sich in Niemeyers Werk identifizieren und suchen die zeitgenössischen Ansprüche von Nachhaltigkeit zu treffen, durch die Nutzung von Carbonfaser als Grundmaterial, welches sich durch seine hohe Beständigkeit und Widerstandsfähigkeit auszeichnet. Ausserdem ist es das erste Möbel, welches in dieser Beschaffenheit gemacht wurde und in einer freien Form für die Architektur in Brasilien. „Diese Arbeit enthält die Werte, welche mein Grossvater Oscar Niemeyer jahrzehntelang kultiviert hat. Sein Einfluss auf meine Erziehung hat mich dazu gebracht am endlosen Kampf für eine mehr vereinte und brüderliche Welt teilzunehmen, in der Schönheit die zentrale Rolle spielt.“

The Chaise “Rio” inspired by the Sugar Loaf is a recent project of the architect, urban planner and designer Paulo Sergio Niemeyer, committed to achieve as a result a style of visual communication capable of arousing a global concern. It understands the attributes of lightness and sinuosity that are possible to identify in the work of Niemeyer, and seeks to meet the contemporary demands of sustainability, using carbon fiber as its base material, which is distinguished by its high durability and resistance. Being also the first furniture made in this composition and with a free form for architecture in Brazil. “This work received values cultivated for decades by my grandfather Oscar Niemeyer. His influence on my upbringing has led me to participate in this ceaseless struggle for a more united and fraternal world, where beauty has a central place.”

Ron Arad (1951 geboren in Israel) ist einer der tonangebenden Designer unserer Zeit. Er sticht durch seine Neugierde für Technologie und Materialien hervor. Der Designer studierte an der Kunstakademie in Jerusalem und an der „Architectural Association“ in London. Ausserdem hat er eine herausragende Reihe von innovativen Objekten produziert, von einer unbegrenzten Serie von Objekten bis hinzu Kohlefaser Stühlen und Polyurethan Flaschengestellen. Zudem hat er unvergessliche Räume, Plastiken und Greifbares entworfen, sowie Ätherisches und Digitales. Arad verlässt sich auf seine Computer und die schnellen Herstellungsmöglichkeiten genauso wie auf die lötenden Apparate in seiner Metallwerkstatt. Ebenso ist er als Architekt tätig und baute das „National Design Museum“ in Holon, Israel.

Ron Arad (Israeli, b. 1951) is one of the most influential designers of our time. He stands out for his curiosity about technology and materials. The designer was trained at the Jerusalem Academy of Art and at London‘s Architectural Association. He has produced an outstanding array of innovative objects from almost unlimited series of objects to carbon fiber armchairs and polyurethane bottle racks. He has also designed memorable spaces, some plastic and tactile, others ethereal and digital. Arad relies on the computer and its rapid manufacturing capabilities as much as he relies on the soldering apparatus in his metal workshop. He works also as architect and built “The National Design Museum“ in Holon, Israel.

Wenn sich der Betrachter der Installation Mediamorphose im Parkhaus Serletta nähert, wird er eine verzerrte Perspektive und ein unverständliches Bild am Boden und an den Wänden sehen. Eine Kamera, welche am richtigen Perspektivpunkt platziert ist, überträgt ein perspektivisch richtiges Bild mit dem Betrachter darin auf einen Bildschirm. Die Kamera ist mit dem Internet verbunden, die geschossenen Bilder werden in einer öffentlichen Datenbank gespeichert, damit jeder Besucher sein Bild im Internet entdecken oder das Geschehen in Echtzeit von der ganzen Welt aus betrachten kann. Die benutzten Bilder beziehen sich auf die facettenreichen Perspektiven der Fotografie-Serie E-Scapes, welche digital manipulierte Ansichten von Plätzen zeigen, an denen der Künstler einen Teil seines Lebens verbracht hat oder zu denen er in einer Beziehung steht. Roberto Cabot schafft geographische Chimären und hybride Landschaften, in denen entfernte Situationen kollidieren und neue unmögliche Orte kreiert werden, welche die Abnormalität zeigt, die sich seltsamerweise vetraut anfühlt. Im Fall von St. Moritz hat der Künstler eine unwahrscheinliche Vision des Ortes entworfen, in der die Alpen dicht von einem Industriegebiet umgeben sind – eine Insel der Harmonie inmitten eines ausgebeuteten Planeten.

When approaching the installation Mediamorphose at the car park Serletta the viewer finds a perspectively distorted, incomprehensible image, spread on floor and walls. A camera, which is placed in the correct perspective point, transmits a perspectively correct image – together with the spectator in it – to a display at the side. The camera being connected with the web, the images shot are stored in an open data base, so that every visitor can thus recover her/his image on the web, or observe what is occurring at the site of the installation from anywhere in the world, in real time. The image used in this multi-facetted perspective device relates to the series of photographic work by the artist named E-Scapes, which are digitally manipulated iconic views of places the artist spent part of his life at, or has a particular relation to. Roberto Cabot creates geographic chimeras, hybrid landscapes where distant situations collide, creating new impossible places which display an abnormality that feels strangely familiar. In the case of St. Moritz, the artist created an improbable vision of the town in the Alps surrounded by a dense industrial area, as an isle of harmony in the midst of an overexploited planet.

Through the commitment of Julius Baer, an extremely versatile and representative collection has been built up over the last 30 years. It encompasses works from all areas of Swiss artistic endeavor. To coincide with the Lutz & Guggisberg exhibition in the Paracelsus building, Julius Baer will present works by the artist duo from its own collection in the St. Moritz branch. Beginning with the first Lutz & Guggisberg acquisition in 2002, an exciting ensemble of works has grown over the years. The exhibition provides an idea of the broad spectrum of media, the limitless choice of materials, stylistic diversity and the many-layered references to the history of art and culture that are so characteristic of the work of Lutz & Guggisberg.

Am diesjährigen St. Moritz Art Masters präsentiert die Bank Julius Bär eine Ausstellung des international renommierten Künstlerduos Lutz & Guggisberg. At this year’s St. Moritz Art Masters, Julius Baer will present an exhibition of works by the internationally acclaimed artist duo, Lutz & Guggisberg. Durch die Lesewiederholung von visuellen Elementen, welche in der brasilianischen Kultur durch die Kolonialisierung inkorporiert sind, wie z. B. den portugiesischen Kachelbildern oder dem Bezug zur Rohheit und Aggressivität des Materials Fleisch, setzt sich die Künstlerin mit der paradoxen Beziehung von Sinnlichkeit, Schmerz, Gewalt und Überfluss auseinander. Adriana Varejão wurde in Rio de Janeiro in Brasilien geboren. Sie hat an wichtigen Biennalen in Venedig, São Paulo, Sydney und Istanbul teilgenommen. Ihre Arbeiten wurden in bedeutenden internationalen Institutionen gezeigt, darunter das MoMA (New York), die Fondation Cartier (Paris), das Centro Cultural de Belém (Lisbon) und das Hara Museum (Tokyo). Ein Pavillion, der ganz ihrem Werk gewidmet ist, kann im Instituto Inhotim im brasilianischen Minas Gerais besichtigt werden. Through the rereading of visual elements incorporated to the Brazilian culture by colonization, such as Portuguese tiles’ paintings, or the reference to crudity and aggressiveness of the substance in works with “meat”, Adriana Varejão discusses paradoxical relations between sensuality and pain, violence and exuberance. Adriana Varejão was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She has participated in important biennials such as Venice, São Paulo, Sydney and Istanbul. Her work has been exhibited in important international institutions including MoMA (New York), Fondation Cartier (Paris), Centro Cultural de Belém (Lisbon) and Hara Museum (Tokyo). A pavilion dedicated to her work can be seen in Instituto Inhotim, in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Adriana Varejão is present in important institutions’ collections, among them Tate Modern, Fondation Cartier, Hara Museum, Stedelijk Museum and Guggenheim.

Präsentiert als Gruppe von Einzelausstellungen weist The Expression of Identity besondere Künstler auf und legt Zeugnis ab über die aussergewöhnliche Intimität und Macht des fotografischen Mediums. Cheyco Leidmann geht mit seinem lebendigen und surrealen Werk voran, welche in einer Serie von postmodernen schrulligen Arbeiten von Occhiomagico (Giancarlo Maiocchi) fortgeführt wird. Neben der ungewöhnlichen und sofort erkennbaren, sorgfältig kultivierten Ästhetik von Albert Watson stehen die bittersüssen und romantisch hoffnungsvollen Visionen von Bettina Rheims. Portraits der weiblichen Fülle von Yossi Loloi folgen, bevor es mit den dramatischen und lyrischen Arbeiten von Matteo Basilé weitergeht und der Besucher von der gefühlvollen Auswahl von Schatten geformter Nackter von Lucien Clergue bezaubert wird, und endet mit dem gefährlichen Auftauchen und der Einheit der Weiblichkeit und Natur von Jock Sturges. Alle Künstler werden während der Veranstaltung anwesend sein und Vorlesungen halten, Interviews geben und Bücher im Posthaus in St. Moritz am Nachmittag des 30. August signieren. Am Abend des gleichen Tages werden alle Künstler während des Tribute to Photography geehrt.

Presented as a group of solo exhibitions, The Expression of Identity features artists and bears witness to the exceptional intimacy and power of the photographic medium. Cheyco Leidmann leads the way with his vibrant and surreal works that give into a series of postmodern yet whimsical works by Occhiomagico (Giancarlo Maiocchi). Juxtaposed by the extraordinary and instantly recognisable carefully cultivated aestheticism of Albert Watson comes the bittersweet and romantic faithful vision of Bettina Rheims. Portraits on the female fullness by Yossi Loloi follow before the dramatic and lyrical work of Matteo Basilé, enrapturing visitors with a soulful selection of shadow sculpted nudes by Lucien Clergue and finally, the precarious emergence and union of femininity and nature by Jock Sturges. All artists will be present during the event and will be giving lectures, interviews and book signings at the Posthaus Hotel on the afternoon of August 30th. The artists will then be honoured during a Tribute to Photography evening on the same day.

Oliver Kruses jüngste Skulpturen, die meisten als begehbar konzipiert, loten das Potenzial aus, das darin steckt, die Spannung von Sichtbarem und Verborgenem, zwischen Innen und Aussen gleichzeitig erfahrbar zu machen. „Interrelate” ist eine dieser Skulpturen, die die Raumwahrnehmung schärfen und ungewöhnliche Raumerlebnisse provozieren. Ein additives Volumen, partiell geöffnet, von aussen, ein subtraktives von innen: Die Flächen der Körper enden dort, wo sie aufeinander stossen. Aus der konzeptionellen Idee werden konkret erfahrbare, abwechslungsreiche und ungewohnte Räume, interessante Ansichten, vielfältige Schattierungen. Aus dem Ort heraus und dessen Gesetzen folgend wurden zahlreiche Varianten von „Interrelate” für St. Moritz entwickelt. Die Verwandlung macht diese Kunst lebendig, sie gehört zu ihrem vielschichtigen Wesen.

Oliver Kruse’s most recent sculptures, most of them conceived as walk-in objects, explore the potential created by the tension between the visible and the concealed, between the inner and the outer. “Interrelate” is one of these sculptures which intensify perception of space and provoke unusual experiences of that element. From the outside this entails partially open additive volume, and from the inside subtractive volume. These surfaces come to an end where they meet one another. Out of a conceptual idea concrete, varied and unfamiliar spaces are created, which can be experienced with their interesting perspectives and great diversity of nuance. Many variants of “Interrelate” were developed for St. Moritz, taking into account the place itself and in accordance with the laws underlying its existence. Transformation brings this art to life and is part of its multi-dimensional essence.

Das Kunstwerk “Hermit” stammt aus der Serie „The Camp Goes Camping“, welche der Natur Unterschlupf in einer kulturellen Umgebung wie einer Stadt bietet. „The Camp Goes Camping“ beherbergt einen kleinen geheimen Garten in einem urbanen Umfeld. Im Gegensatz dazu bietet der „Hermit“ den Menschen Obdach, die eine unberührte und wilde Natur suchen. Das Zelt dient den Wanderern als Schutz vor dem Wetter und als Ort für kontemplative Gedanken. Der brasilianische Künstler Thiago Rocha Pitta (*1980) bezieht sich auch auf den Philosophen Friedrich Nietzsche, der von der Landschaft des Engadins inspiriert wurde und dort Zarathustra getroffen haben soll. Die Skulptur “Hermit” ist begehbar und der Spaziergänger kann dort die Erfahrung von Einsamkeit und Abgeschiedenheit machen. The artwork „Hermit“ derives from the series „The Camp Goes Camping“ which is a shelter for nature in a cultural environment like a city or a town.„The Camp Goes Camping“ shelters a small secret garden in an urban surrounding. In contrast the “Hermit” is a shelter for people who visit an untouched and wild nature. The camping tent serves the wanderer as a refuge from the weather as well as a place for contemplative thoughts. The Brazilian artist Thiago Rocha Pitta (*1980) refers also to the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who was inspired by the landscape of the Engadin and is said to have met Zarathustra there. The sculpture “Hermit” is accessible and the walker can experience solitude and isolation. The temporary condition of the camping tent is metamorphosed into a lasting sculpture and plays also with nomadic and domestic ideas of living.

Mimmo Rotella wurde 1918 in Catanzaro geboren. 1945 zog er nach Rom. Dort traf er Piero Dorazio, Carla Accardi und Giulio Turcato und konnte verschiedene abstrakte-geometrische Arbeiten in einigen Ausstellungen zeigen. Von 1951-1952 war er Stipendiat der Kansas City Universität. Bei seiner Rückkehr entdeckte er Werbeposter als Quelle seiner Inspiration. Seine Décollagen schaffte er durch das Abziehen und wieder Zusammensetzen der Poster. Durch seine enge Freundschaft mit dem französischen Kritiker Pierre Restany trat er 1960 dem Nouveau Réalisme bei. Seine Ausdrucksweise wurde unverkennbar. Seine Entwicklung basiert auf den verschiedenen Verbindungen zwischen den traditionellen Komponenten der Malerei und den Eigenheiten des alltäglichen Lebens. Seine Arbeiten sind das Ergebnis der gegenseitigen Befruchtung von hoher und populärer Kunst, welche die Vielfalt der Formen förderte und in vielen berühmten Museen weltweit ausgestellt wird. Rotella starb 2006 in Mailand.

Mimmo Rotella was born in Catanzaro in 1918. Moving to Rome in 1945, he met Piero Dorazio, Carla Accardi and Giulio Turcato and entered abstractgeometric works in several exhibitions. In 1951-1952, he was Artist in Residence at the University of Kansas City. On his return, he discovered advertising posters as a source of inspiration and created décollages by tearing pieces from them and reassembling them on canvas. In 1960, his close relationship with the French critic Pierre Restany led to his joining Nouveau Réalisme. His idiom became unmistakeable, as his research was based on various connections between the traditional components of painting and the entities he tore from everyday life. His works are the result of a crossfertilising bond between high-brow and popular art that encourages a plurality of forms and can be found in many of the world’s leading museums. Rotella died in Milan in 2006.

Kerim Seiler erweitert für die St. Moritz Art Masters Stiftung das Dach des Crystal Hotel mit einem skulpturalen Aufbau und führt sein Projekt fort, welches bereits in Johannesburg zur Realisation kam. Dort können Künstler mit einem Stipendium Relay als temporäres Atelier nutzen. Die Idee zu Relay (Situationist Space Program), einem Netzwerk von Skulpturen mit architektonischer Funktionalität, nimmt in St. Moritz Gestalt an: Eine vom Betrachter bewohnbare Skulptur, in welcher eine Synthese von Raum und Zeit, Ort und Geist möglich wird. Ein Werk als theatralischer Raum, in welchem der Betrachter zum Autor wird, Darsteller und Publikum verschmelzen.

Kerim Seiler extends the roof of the Crystal Hotel with a sculptural construction for the St. Moritz Art Masters Foundation and thus continues his project, which already came to realization in Johannesburg, where a residencyprogram supports artists to use Relay as temporary workspace. The idea of Relay (Situationist Space Program), a network of sculptures of architectural functionality will extend to St. Moritz: a habitable sculpture in which the synthesis of space and time, place and spirit is possible, a theatrical space in which the viewer is author, performer and audience merge.

Der brasilianische Künstler Pedro Wirz (*1981) spielt mit den Definitionen von Autorschaft und lotet deren Grenzen aus. Seine kuratierten Skulpturen entstehen nach seinen gesetzten Regeln in intensiver Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Kuratoren und Künstlern. Für St. Moritz Art Masters hat er sich von antiken Kunstwerken der Galerie JeanDavid Cahn inspirieren lassen. Für ausgewählte Objekte schuf er SockelSkulpturen, die in einem mehrere Wochen währenden Dialog mit dem Architekten Alexandre Canonico (*1974) entworfen wurden. Die SockelSkulpturen sind das Gestalt gewordene Gespräch zwischen den beiden brasilianischen Künstlern und der antiken Kunst. Sie dienen den antiken Objekten als Präsentationsfläche und verbinden sie mit der heutigen Zeit. Die Installation, die sowohl die Galerie als auch den öffentlichen Raum einbezieht, findet mühelos die Balance zwischen den Epochen.

The Brazilian artist Pedro Wirz (*1981) plays with the definitions and limits of authorship. He creates his „Curated Sculptures“ in cooperation with other artists and curators. For St. Moritz Art Masters, ancient art from the Gallery Jean-David Cahn were his source of inspiration. He created pedestal sculptures for selected objects, designing them together with the architect Alexandre Canonico (*1974) in a dialogue that lasted for several weeks. The pedestal sculptures are, thus, the result of the interaction between the two Brasilian artists and the ancient artworks. They serve to enhance the presentation of the ancient objects and to bridge the gap to the present day. The installation makes use of both the gallery space and public space, and effortlessly strikes a balance between the ages. In einer Illustration des ModetheaterModells der legendären Landesausstellung 1939 in Zürich, fanden die drei Künstler Urs Cavelti (*1969), Markus Müller (*1970) und Boris Rebetez (*1970) Eckpunkte ihrer je eigenen Arbeit und Beschäftigung mit Skulptur angesprochen. Für die St. Moritz Art Masters 2012 realisieren sie vor dem Hotel Kulm ein Ausstellungsprojekt/ Aussenprojekt, in dem sie, wie auf dem gefundenen Bild, Qualitäten des öffentlichen Raums als Bühne, die Künstlichkeit des Ausstellens und die Suggestionskraft des schönen Scheins thematisieren und in einer Form kondensieren. Eine Bühne allein ist kein Theater und ein Schauspieler ohne Bühne kein Stück. Nicht nur der Raum, sondern auch die Zeit wird als plastisches Element und als dehnbarer Begriff verstanden. Das Zitieren und leichte Verschieben „alter Moden“ macht aus dem Schnee von gestern den Widerschein im heute und vielleicht den Glamour von morgen.

For the three artists Urs Cavelti (b. 1969), Markus Müller (b. 1970), and Boris Rebetez (b. 1970) the illustration of a model of the fashion theatre that had been part of the legendary 1939 Swiss National Exhibition in Zurich offered cornerstones for their own work and reflections on sculpture. For the St. Moritz Art Masters 2012 they are presenting an exhibition project / exterior project that, much in the way the found picture of the theatre’s model does, highlights the stage-like qualities of the public space, the artifice of exhibiting, the suggestive power of the beautiful appearance and gives it a form. A stage alone is not a theatre and an actor without a stage does not make a play. Time, like space, is malleable and an elastic element. By quoting and slightly displacing ‘past fashions,’ the snows of yesteryear shine in present-day lustre and with the possible promise of being tomorrow’s glamourous past.

MacGhillie wurde von der Künstlergruppe knowbotic research (CH) 2008 für das Cabaret Voltaire konzipiert. Der „Ghillie Suit“ wurde im 19ten Jahrhundert für die Jagd erfunden und wird seit dem Ersten Weltkrieg auch im militärischen Kontext gebraucht. Seine Tarnung anonymisiert und neutralisiert die Personen, die ihn in als Kunstfigur tragen. Mit MacGhillie hat das Cabaret Voltaire die perfekte zeitgenössische Ikone als komplementärer Partner der historischen Dada Ikone von Hugo Ball in einem kubistischen Kostüm gefunden. Deshalb streift MacGhillie nun durchs Engadin und bereitet das hundertjährige Dada Jubiläum 2016 vor.

Hannes Gruber

Hannes Gruber lebt und arbeitet in SilsBaselgia im Engadin. Grubers lebenslange künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Engadiner Licht, das der Künstler immer wieder mit dem mediterranen Licht der ligurischen Küste oder Siziliens vergleicht, prägt seine Schaffensphasen und lässt ihn unbeirrt seinen künstlerischen Weg gehen. Hannes Gruber versucht immer wieder, die Grenzen zu überschreiten und zu neuen Dimensionen vorzustossen. Er sagt: „Der Gegenstand löst sich nach und nach im Licht auf“. Es ist die Macht des beschriebenen Lichts, das Gruber zum abstrakten Maler macht. Damit hat sich Hannes Gruber weitgehend von den äusseren Vorlagen befreit und eine künstlerische, gestalterische Freiheit errungen, die uns suggestiv in ihren Bann zieht.

Hannes Gruber lives and works in SilsBaselgia, Engadin. His creative development is based on the investigation of the amazing light in the Engadin, which he recurrently compares with the Mediterranean light of the Ligurian coast or Sicily. Hannes Gruber is unwaveringly following his artistic path, thus continuously trying to exceed limits and to reach new dimensions. He says that the subject is gradually dissolved in light. It is because of the power of this light that Gruber became an abstract painter, disengaging himself from external constraints, and, concentrating on his artistic and creative expression instead – creating work that captivates the beholder.

„Engadine Shadows“ ist eine Serie von Fotografien, die nach einer Privatführung mit dem Künstler Peter Vernon Quenter im August 2011 im Engadiner Museum entstanden ist.

„Engadine Shadows“ is a series of photographs taken by the artist Peter Vernon Quenter after a private guided tour through the Engadiner Museum in August 2011.

Peter Vernon Quenter wurde 1958 in Kanada geboren. Nach einem längeren Europa-Aufenthalt kehrte er 1990 nach Kanada zurück. Seit seiner Jugend widmet er sich der Fotografie. Für seine künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Zen-Buddhismus und für seine Tusch-Kalligraphien erhielt er Auszeichnungen in Japan.

Peter Vernon Quenter was born in Canada 1958. After an extended period of residence in Europe he returned to Canada in 1990. Since early youth he focused on photography. For his artistic involvement with Zen Buddhism and his India ink calligraphy he received awards in Japan.

Die Räume des Engadiner Museums enthalten nicht nur historische Gegenstände; der Besucher erfühlt auch die Geschichten der Zeit. Spannend ist das Lichtspiel, das der Künstler mit seiner Kamera hier in den Vordergrund setzt. Die sanften oder abrupten Übergänge von hell und dunkel, die Details von Oberflächenstrukturen und polierten Flächen alten Holzes und die Kontraste zwischen dem, was im Licht sich zeigt und im Schatten sich verbirgt, evozieren die Fantasie.

Vanity, artificialty and sinfulness are central themes with which the artist Melli Ink (*1972) engages. In close collaboration with master glass-blowers and textile experts highly aesthetic sculptures and installations emerge, which on second glance reveal profound depths and multiple references to art and cultural history. Jewellery designer Christophe Graber works in the same spirit. He also takes inspiration from a wide range of cultural themes to create beautiful artefacts beneath whose surfaces lurk magical dimensions. „Faulty Towers“ is the title of Melli Ink’s glass, rose quartz and crystal installation to be shown in Christophe Graber’s gallery in St. Moritz. Inspired by Hieronymus Bosch‘s „Garden of Earthly Delights“, the artist has erected a fragile Babylon whose glittering exterior captures the glamour of the present moment – a frail beauty, capable of collapsing in an instant.

Ding Yi entwickelt seit Anfang der 1980er Jahre komplexe Bildreihen, in denen in immer wieder neuen Variationen und Farben dichte Kreuzstrukturen das Hauptelement bilden. Das Kreuz verweist sowohl auf die Auseinandersetzung mit der traditionellen chinesischen Kultur als auch mit der Malerei der Frühphase des westlichen Modernismus. Ausgehend von den Markierungen in der Herstellung von Druckerzeugnissen wird das Kreuz schliesslich als ein „schlichtes, funktionales Zeichen, welches keine spezifischen Interpretationen beinhaltet“, für Ding Yi zum idealen Ausdrucksmittel, um die Abstraktion in der chinesischen Malerei weiter in einen Bereich ohne soziokulturelle Referenzen voranzutreiben. Für den Betrachter entfaltet sich in den zum Teil wandfüllenden Formaten Ding Yi’s ein vielschichtiges Wechselspiel der Formen und Farben. Zugleich ist seine Malerei Spiegelbild der „Erfahrungen in einer Metropole wie Shanghai, wo zunächst alles chaotisch und unüberschaubar erscheint, die jedoch bei näherer Betrachtung faszinierende Strukturen aufweist und einem eigenen Rhythmus folgt“.

Since the end of the 1980s, Ding Yi has devoted himself exclusively to working with the theme of the cross + and x which he exploits to its maximum potential. All these works are the proliferation of the small signs repeated according to a systematic principle. Devoid of narrative or symbolic significance, the approach to painting does not seek any sort of emotional expression, but instead is reduced to its minimal state. A wonderful dynamic is born out of the tension between formal variety and the minimal nature of the structural elements. The work is never the result of a mechanical reproduction, but rather of a delicate manual process. His paintings have also been seen as an accumulation of a sort of manual writing, reminiscent of a traditional savoir-faire or of the Chinese calligraphy practice. The artist has always had a talent for integrating a variety of references in a very personal way, whether it be from the preceding generation of Chinese artists or western influences such as those of Mondrian to Newman, from Pollock to Warhol.

Mit dem Kennzeichen purer Lebenslust könnte Stefan Rincks künstlerischer Charakter angesichts seiner illustren Bandbreite an Bildern und Skulpturen beschrieben werden. Das von ihm für seine dreidimensionalen Arbeiten gewählte Material ist zeitwährender, einst zur inneren und äusseren Zierde der grossen europäischen Kathedralen dienender Sandstein. Mit skurrilem Charme schneidet und meisselt er roh behauene menschliche Figuren, Tiere, hybride Monster und primitivisierte Antikenzitate. Gabriel Vormsteins Neuinterpretationen historisierter Ikonen der Modernisten bewegen sich irgendwo zwischen Archivierung und Recycling des Bildes. Die weibliche Figur steht im Zentrum seiner künstlerischen Strategie der Aneignung, ihrer ursprünglichen, kanonischen Quelle entrissen. Modische, halbseidene Mädchen frei nach Egon Schiele oder ornamentale Details à la Klimt und dem Jugenstil werden häufig mit minimalistischen, abstrakten, Neo-Geo oder dekorativen Motiven konfrontiert.

Lust for life might be a way of describing Stefan’s Rinck’s artistic temperament towards his menagerie of sculpture and painting. His choice of three-dimensional material is sandstone; the time-beaten stuff adorning the interiors and exteriors of the great European cathedrals. With comical congeniality he cuts and carves roughhewn human figures, animals, hybrid monsters, and dumbed-down quotations from antiquity. Gabriel Vormstein’s reinterpretations of historicized Modernist icons fall somewhere between the archive and the recycled image. The female figure is central to his appropriations extracted from their original canonical source; the Voguish demimonde straight out of Egon Schiele or the ornamental details found in Klimt and Jugendstil, are often contrasted by minimal, abstract, neo-geo, or decorative motifs.

Eine „atemberaubende künstlerische Entwicklung” (NZZ) zeichnet das Œuvre des Schweizer Bildhauers Giuliano Pedretti aus. Seine visionären „Schizo”-Plastiken sind in der Kunst ohne Vorbild. Indem er die Kopf- und Körperhälften der Figuren durch einen Abstand voneinander trennte, legt er die schizophrene Disposition des Menschen und unserer Zeit frei. Resultat der Spaltung ist ein gleichsam schwereloses Volumen. MIit einer unbeirrbaren Folgerichtigkeit untersuchte Giuliano Pedretti, letzter Vertreter der klassischen Moderne, die Probleme der Bildhauerei: Raum und Existenz. Kunst war für ihn nie „Gag”. Stets ging es dem dynamischen Engadiner Künstler „um das Schöpferische – etwas künstlich Lebendiges, um eine Gegenkraft zur Natur, um ein geistiges Über- und Weiterleben gegen den Zerfall der Welt, gegen den Tod und die Zeit”. Im Januar 2012 starb Giuliano Pedretti an den Folgen eines Unfalls.

The oeuvre of the Swiss sculptor Giuliano Pedretti is characterised by a “breath-taking artistic development”, according to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung. His visionary “Schizo” sculptures remain without precedent in the world of art. By separating head and body of the sculptures, he reveals the schizophrenic disposition of man and of our time. The result of the splitting is a somewhat weightless volume. With imperturbable logic, Giuliano Pedretti, the last representative of Classic Modernism, examined the problems of sculpturing: space and existence. Art was never a “gag” to him. The dynamic artist from the Engadine always focused on “the creative element, something artistically alive, a counterforce to nature, mental survival and the continuation of life against the decay of the world, against death and time”. Known for his much celebrated work in fashion photography, Amedeo M.Turello’s exhibition at the Nira Alpina for the St Moritz Art Masters 2012 explores the visual poetry of his beautiful imagery. The photographer captivates his subjects with style and refined flamboyance in the evocative and iconic series of works and through close collaboration with important designers, has composed each element of the images into harmonious performers in his frame. Alternating between colour and black and white, each portrait of the latest fashion reveals a personal journey into the intense and vulnerable relationship between photographer and model. Turello’s work lifts a veil on a certain kind of beauty in an almost euphoric way. The Identity of Style allows the audience to discover and appreciate the respect he has for his two favourite subjects: photography and women.

Häuser in Museen sind weder Häuser noch Museen. Die Anordnung der Objekte scheint wichtiger als die Objekte selbst. Es ist als ob die Umgestaltung die Dinge besänftigen und beruhigen würde, sowie deren Unterschiede auflöst, den geschaffenen Raum beschützt, in dem es nun kein Leben mehr gibt. Die Sammlung ist in der Zeit eingefroren, aber ein Haus verbirgt viele Dinge. Eine Glas-Sammlung, welche Teil der Sammlung sein könnte, es aber nicht ist. Die Gläser stützen die Originalstücke des Hauses und schaffen einen Ort, an dem noch niemand zuvor war. Licht erfüllt den Boden, unter dem eine andere Welt verborgen sein könnte. Das Licht zwischen Rahmen und Wänden blockiert die Durchgänge. Wir kennen all diese Dinge. Sie sind um uns, aber da ist mehr, als woran wir uns erinnern.

House museums are neither house nor museum. The disposition of objects may be more important in them than the objects themselves. It is as if the organization is there to pacify things, to apease them, to dissolve differences, projecting in the space created between them a life that is not there anymore. The collection is frozen in time. But a house has many hidden things. A collection of glasses that could be, but is not, part of the collection. They support the original pieces in the house, creating a space where one had not been before. Light dissolves the floor, for there might be another world under it. Light between frames and walls, light blocking passageways. We know all those things. They’ve been around, but there is more than we remember.

Der britische Konzept- und LandartKünstler Hamish Fulton hat sich als „Walking Artist“ weltweit einen Namen gemacht. Seine Wanderungen erstrecken sich über einen Tag bis zu mehreren Wochen. In Fotos, Texten, Bildern und Skizzen, in Holzarbeiten und Wandzeichnungen dokumentiert der Künstler seine körperlichen und emotionalen Erfahrungen. Sie können prosaisch über Länge, Dauer und Datum informieren oder mit poetischen Wortfolgen Stimmungen und Erinnerungen wecken und ebenso spirituelle Dimensionen erreichen. Im Mai 2009 hat er mit dem Gipfel des Mount Everest den höchsten Punkt der Erde erreicht. Dieses gewaltige Erlebnis wird zum Thema in vielfältigen und höchst unterschiedlichen Arbeiten. Neben der Präsentation seiner Arbeiten in der Chesa Merleda in La Punt und in der Galerie Tschudi in Zuoz kann man sich am 30. August in St. Moritz einem „Public Walk“ mit Hamish Fulton anschliessen.

Hamish Fulton, the famous British artist of conceptual and land art will take part in the event of Art Masters in the Engadine Valley in summer 2012. The artist is well-known for his hiking tours over all continents. These tours last a day, a week or some months. He documents his personal experiences with photographs, texts, with drawings, sometimes directly made on a wall, or with works of wood. With all these objects he tells us something about duration, weather and date of the hiking tour and something about his personal feelings and memories. In May 2009 Fulton reached the summit of Mount Everest – the highest point on earth. This profound impression is theme of various works. In addition to his exhibition in the Chesa Merleda in La Punt and Tschudi Gallery in Zuoz you are invited to attend a „Public Walk“ with Hamish Fulton in St. Moritz on 30th August. Chesa Colani gibt das Konzept des Zeitgeistes wieder (indem das Gegenwärtige dem Sinn und der Bedeutung der Geschichte des Ortes angepasst wird). Das Projekt umfasst den vom Architekturstudio Bertolini – Galli ausgeführten neuen architektonischen Plan und zwei permanente Installationen: „Steingarten“ und „The wind is blowing in my direction“ der Künstlerin Letizia Cariello, sowie italienische Küche und ein Programm mit verschiedenen Veranstaltungen wie unabhängigem Kino, Poesie- und Literatur-Abenden. Die Struktur und neue Form der Eingangshalle ermöglichte die Einrichtung eines Steingartens auf dem Flachdach, einer aus grau-grünen Felsblöcken und Stahlkugeln geschaffenen Moräne, die das Thema „Wasser-Felsen“ des Hoch-Engadiner Landes gezielt wiedergeben, eine künstliche, poetische Darstellung des „Giardino dell‘Eno“. „The wind is blowing in my direction“ besteht aus fünf Bäumen aus Stahl, die sich am Eingang des Hotels befinden und durch eine gesteuerte Vorrichtung den Wohlklang des Windes der Via Maistra entlang wahrnehmen lassen.

At Chesa Colani we recall the concept of Zeitgeist (adaptation of the present to the history’s significance). The project comprehends the new architectonic design by architects Bertolini and Galli; the two permanent installations Steingarten and The wind is blowing in my direction by artist Letizia Cariello; Italian cuisine; a programme of independent cinema; Italian poetry and literature. The new hall’s form and structure support the installation Steingarten, a moraine of grey-green rocks and steel balls reverberating the theme of water in the High Engadine landscape. The Garden theme, artificial and poetic picture of the Garden of Eno, is echoed in the installation The wind is blowing in my direction: five steel trees lining the façade of the Hotel. They play music thanks to a device that gets activated by the wind along Via Maistra.

Hannes Schmid (*1946) in Zürich. Seine Modefotografien zeichnen sich durch die Wahl aussergewöhnlicher Schauplätze und neuartige Bildlösungen aus, was in den 80-er Jahren zu einer neuen Bildsprache in der Modebranche führte. Mit Lichtführung und Farbsetzungen werden Clair-Obscur Wirkungen erzielt, Übergänge geschaffen und Kontraste definiert. Das Licht von Schmid lässt uns Dinge wahrnehmen, die dem Alltagsauge sonst verborgen blieben. Ein unfehlbarer Sinn für Komposition geht damit einher. Diese Subtilität und Präzision lässt sich bereits bei den legendären Cowboys ausmachen. Man ist geneigt dem Licht, das seine Bilder so wunderbar illuminiert und animiert, eine seltsam entrückte Qualität zu attestieren. Was wir in seinen Bildern suchen? Vielleicht das Geheimnis unserer eigenen Faszination? Ausstellungen in Europa und New York haben Schmids Werk international bekannt gemacht. Das Kunstmuseum Bern widmet ihm 2013 eine umfassende Ausstellung.

Hannes Schmid was born in 1946 in Zurich. His fashion photographs are characterized by unusual locations and innovative visual solutions, which in the 1980s inspired a new visual language in the fashion trade. Clairobscur effects are achieved by means of illumination and color accents, transitions created and contrasts defined. Schmid‘s lighting helps us perceive things that would otherwise remain hidden to habitual vision. This goes hand in hand with an infallible sense of composition, whose subtleness and precision are already seen in the legendary Cowboys. One is tempted to attest a strangely transcendent quality to the light that so wonderfully illuminates and animates his imagery. What do we look for in his pictures? Perhaps the secret of our own fascination? Exhibitions in Europe and New York have made Schmid‘s work internationally known. The Kunstmuseum Bern plans to devote a comprehensive show to him in 2013.

Hamish Fulton (geboren 1946 in London) zeigt erstmals grosse Wandarbeiten aus Holz sowie weitere Arbeiten. Für Fulton ist das Gehen die Basis seiner Arbeiten. Landschaften, Wetterstimmungen und Erlebnisse auf seinen Wanderungen sind Ausgangspunkte für seine Werke.

Aus der Verbindung von natürlichem und künstlichem Licht schafft der Künstler eine einzigartige Symbiose von Bild, Materie und Raum.

The skyspace „Piz Uter“ by James Turrell was realized in August 2005 by the Walter A. Bechtler Foundation for the Hotel Castell in Zuoz (CH). The opening of the cupola of the rotunda offers the view of a changing play of colors of the sky. With the connection between natural and artificial light the artist creates a unique symbiosis of image, subject and space.

Die Photo-Master-Class ist ein Projekt von St. Moritz Art Masters, dem Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz, dem Fotografen Peter Vann und dem Kamerahersteller LEICA.

The Photo-Master-Class is a project of St. Moritz Art Masters, the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz, the photographer Peter Vann and the camera manufacturer LEICA.

Die Schüler des Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz wurden unter der Anleitung des renommierten Fotografen Peter Vann und ihrer Lehrer Hedi Ernst Schmid und Peter Denier an die Fotografie herangeführt und bekamen die Aufgabe, die Schönheit des Engadins in Nahaufnahmen festzuhalten. Die Werke werden unter dem Ausstellungstitel „Blow up in the Engadin“ auf dem Rondell des Lyceum Alpinum in Zuoz gezeigt. LEICA stellte die professionelle Fotografieausrüstung zur Verfügung, mit der die Schüler in einem Zeitraum von fünf Monaten fotografieren und filmen konnten. Der Fantasie waren keine Grenzen gesetzt, das einzige Kriterium war der persönliche Bezug zum Kunstwerk.

The well-known photographer Peter Vann and the teachers Hedi Ernst Schmid und Peter Denier introduced the students to the secrets of photography. The students were then given the task to discover the beauty of the Engadin in close-ups. Under the title “Blow up in the Engadin“the works are displayed on the Rondell of the Lyceum Alpinum in Zuoz. LEICA provided the students with film and photo camera equipment for five months. No limits were set to their creativity; the only requirement was a personal artistic approach.

Der Maler Herbert Brandl, österreichischer Kunstpreisträger und BiennaleVertreter, unter anderem berühmt für sein gewaltiges Gebirgs-Œuvre, geht mit Verve und Neugier daran, Fotografien aus den Engadiner Bergen zu verinnerlichen und in eigenen künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen zu interpretieren – in Monotypien. Dazu bedient er sich ausgesuchter Vorlagen – der grossformatigen Fotografien des renommierten Fotografen Peter Vann, der mit hochgradiger Begeisterung an das unwegsame Sujet herangeht und uns Daheimgebliebenen dramatische Ansichten von geradezu literarischer Dimension liefert – ob es sich um Morteratsch, den Biancograt oder den Albulapass handelt, eingefangen in besonderen Lichtstimmungen, unter kristallenen atmosphärischen Bedingungen. Dass sich nun die beiden künstlerischen Hochalpinisten zusammengefunden haben, um eine Seilschaft in riskantem Schwebezustand zu wagen, kann als besonderer Glücksfall erachtet werden.

Austrian painter Herbert Brandl is a prizewinning artist who has exhibited at the Biennale. Among the work that has made him famous are studies of mighty mountain ranges. He devotes immense vigour and energy to absorbing details of photographs from the Engadine mountains and interpreting them with his own expressive artistic forms as monotypes. His selected starting points are the large-format photographs taken by the celebrated photographer Peter Vann, who tracks down these often hard-toreach subjects with immense enthusiasm and presents the more sedentary among us with dramatic views possessing a thoroughly literary dimension – the Morteratsch, the Biancograt or the Albula Pass – captured in conditions in which a special light prevails and the air is crystal-clear. That these two wanderers in the High Alps have found each other, and formed a two-man rope team to explore risk-areas where a sense of balance is essential, is an unusually fortunate turn of events.

„Herzschuss“ ist eine Ausstellung von Rolf Sachs mit Möbeln, Plastiken, Fotoarbeiten, Objekten und Installationen, die vom Geist und den Materialien des Engadin und der Alpenkultur inspiriert wurde. Traditionelle Werte und regionale Eigenheiten werden aus persönlicher Sicht interpretiert. Das Ergebnis sind Objekte, die zum Teil verfremdet, sich in neuer Perspektive, veränderter Materialität oder auch in frischen Kontexten dem Betrachter stellen. Die Ausstellung enthält weiterhin Drucke eines kollaborativen Fotografieprojekts mit seiner Frau Maryam. Den Titel bezieht die Ausstellung von einer Aktion zur Gestaltung eines der Ausstellungsstücke und er verweist gleichzeitig auf die Verbundenheit von Rolf Sachs mit dem Bündnerland. Mit Empfindsamkeit und Augenzwinkern geht er an die Konzeption seiner Objekte. Es werden regional ausgeprägte Traditionen aus ihrem zeitlichen Kontext genommen und neu interpretiert oder aber die Funktionalität von Objekten bewusst verändert, um den Betrachter zu einer neuen Begegnung mit Form, Material und Funktion einzuladen, eine Erfahrung, die alle Sinne ansprechen und stimulieren soll.

Rolf Sachs’ Herzschuss (‘Shot through the Heart’) is an exhibition of furniture, objects, installations, photography and sculpture, inspired by the spirit and materials of the Alpine and Engadine regions. Sachs investigates traditional values and unique cultural peculiarities from his typically humorous and inquisitive perspective, offering a fresh, bold and personal approach. The exhibition will also showcase edition prints from the collaborative photographic project with his wife Maryam Sachs. The title (of the exhibition) refers to the creation process of one particular installation piece but also emphasises Sachs’ close connection to the Bündnerland. By approaching the subject matter with a sensitivity and playfulness, Sachs is shining a spotlight on some varied and fascinating local traditions. Viewing these objects out of their everyday environment, the viewer is invited to take part in an immersive, multi-sensory experience and to encounter the form, materials and functions of these objects in a completely different context.

Die in London wohnenden Künstler James Capper, Luke Hart und David Murphy nehmen an der Gruppenausstellung „YES“ teil, welche von Alma Zevi kuratiert wird. Die Werke beschäftigen sich mit industrieller Ausrüstung, Aal-Fallen, hochkarätigen Technologien wie erdemachenden Maschinen, elegant freistehende Skulpturen und Bodenstücke, welche das Potential der Bewegung erforschen. Die Künstler werden eine Auswahl von Papierarbeiten, Macquetten und Skulpturen zeigen, welche ihre Arbeitspraxis illustriert. Alle drei Künstler verwenden Stahl, adaptieren ihn nach ihren Bedürfnissen und kombinieren ihn mit anderen Materialien wie Gummi, Gips und Holz. YES findet in der Fundaziun Not Vital statt. Das ehemalige Planta- Haus wurde erhalten und in seinem Originalzustand bewahrt. Das Haus gehört zu einem Komplex von drei Häusern der Planta-Wildenberg Familie in Zernez, errichtet 1641 von Johann von Planta-Wildenberg, dem Verwalter von Morbegno. Die historischen Möbel und die Struktur des Hauses stehen in dynamischer Verbindung mit der zeitgenössischen Kunst der Ausstellung. London-based sculptors James Capper, Luke Hart and David Murphy will be participating in this group exhibition, curated by Alma Zevi. The work draws from fields as far-reaching as industrial equipment, eeltraps and cutting-edge technology to produce, respectively, earth-marking machines, elegant free-standing sculpture, and floor-pieces that explore the potential of movement. The artists will be showing a selection of works on paper, maquettes, and sculpture, illustrating their working practice. All three artists use steel, adapting it to their needs by combining it with other materials such as rubber, plaster and wood. YES takes place in Not Vital’s Foundation, a former Planta house maintained and preserved in its original form. The house is part of a complex of three houses by the Planta-Wildenberg family of Zernez, erected in 1641 by Johann von Planta-Wildenberg, bailiff in Morbegno. The historical furniture and structure of the house has a dynamic relationship with the contemporary art on show.

Nach einer ausführlichen Renovierung des historischen Gouverneur-Hauses aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, gebaut von Johann Stupan, damals der Gouverneur des Veltlin, weihte Gian Enzo Sperone die “Chasa dal Guvernatur” im Juli 2008 ein. Die Galerie im Erdgeschoss beherbergt Ausstellungen von Alten Meistern und zeitgenössischer Kunst. Die Eröffnungsausstellung zeigte Bruce Nauman, gefolgt von Wolfgang Laib und dann Julian Schnabel. Es gibt eine ständige Installation von Not Vital „Tabla“. Diesen Sommer zeigt Gian Enzo Sperone eine doppelte Ausstellung mit Tom Sachs und Vik Muniz.

Gian Enzo Sperone inaugurated “Chasa dal Guvernatur” in July 2008 after an extensive renovation of this historical 18th century “Governor’s House” built in 1709 by Johann Stupan, then the Governor of Valtellina. The gallery on the ground floor hosts exhibitions of both contemporary art and the old masters. The inaugural exhibition was Bruce Nauman, followed by Wolfgang Laib and Julian Schnabel. There is a permanent installation of Not Vital in the “Tabla”. This summer Gian Enzo Sperone will present a dual exhibition with Tom Sachs and Vik Muniz.

Nach sechsjährigem Bestehen der Kunstgalerie Ficher Rohr in Basel mit Ausstellungen renommierter Künstler wie z.B Frank Stella, Gerhard Richter, Manfred Leve, reifte die Idee, in SentEngadin in einem alten Engadiner Bauernhaus, einen Kunstraum und Atelier für junge talentierte Künstler aus Brasilien und anderen Länder zu schaffen. Die Künstler werden von einem Kurator ausgewählt. Vik Muniz, auch als Brasilianischer Künstler weltbekannt, wurde als Kurator für die Eröffnungsausstellung, welche am „Walk of Art“ der St. Moritz Art Masters teilnimmt, eingeladen. In Zukunft soll ein Gremium von Kunstsachverständigen die Künstler auswählen, welche für eine bestimmt Zeit im Haus wohnen, arbeiten und ausstellen werden. Der Kunstraum, wird auch die Unterstützung von Stiftungen aus Brasilien und der Schweiz erhalten. Während der Eröffnungsausstellung werden die Kuratoren der Brasilianischen Museen MASP- São Paulo, MAM- Rio de Janeiro und Vik Muniz anwesend sein.

In its six years of existence in Basel, the gallery Ficher Rohr has staged exhibitions with well-respected artists such as Frank Stella, Gerhard Richter and Manfred Leve. The idea occurred to create an art space and workshop for young talented artists from Brazil and other countries. The place is an old farmhouse in the Engadin village of Sent. A curator selects the artists. Vik Muniz, who is also a world-famous Brazilian artist, curates the first exhibition. His work is part of the “Walk of Art”. In the future a board of experts will choose the artists who will live, work and exhibit in the house for a certain time. Foundations from Brazil and Switzerland support the art space. During the opening of the exhibition curators from the Brazil museum MASPSão Paulo, MAM- Rio de Janeiro and Vik Muniz will be present.
