Stockland Martel Representing Photographers
Welcome SMart Book 2012 is the latest in our ongoing series of limited-edition photo annuals. In these pages, you’ll see highlights of our photographers’ work across all categories: celebrity and entertainment, portraits, still life, fashion, beauty, landscapes, automotive, sports and recreation, home and interiors, adventure, architecture, food, kids, humor, and travel and leisure. To help you get to know the photographers themselves, we’ve shared our thoughts about them alongside their work. As you read through SMart Book, you’ll learn about each of these talented people—what they’re like, how they work, and why their clients love them. Want to see our photographers in action? Flip to the back of the book, where you’ll find a collection of behind-the-scenes photos. It’s one of our favorite parts of this year’s SMart Book. Regards, Bill Stockland

Kwaku Alston 07
Warmth, enthusiasm, charm—Kwaku has all of the above, and it all shows through in his work. He makes people feel at ease, and as a result, he’s able to bring out the essence of each person he photographs. Simply put, his images feel authentic and natural, whether he’s shooting a Hollywood celebrity, a national ad campaign, or a captivating street scene in Paris or Hong Kong or Brazil or…

Jorg Badura 11
Passionate and authentic, Jorg Badura has an undeniable thirst to awaken something in us all. He takes you to the edge of human endeavors, from the fervor and strength of famous athletes to the courage of the fearless adventure seeker, all the while honoring the awe-inspiring feeling of nature. What motivates him? The hope that you will become an explorer yourself.

Fulvio Bonavia 15
As a former digital artist, Fulvio knows how to realize just about any concept his clients dream up; he’s been featured on the cover of Lürzer’s Archive 200 Best because his images are that good. Leave this charming Italian to his own devices, meanwhile, and you’re just as likely to be delighted by the results. A handbag fashioned from fruit? Ballet flats made from eggplants? With everything he does, Fulvio leaves us hungry for more.

Matthias Clamer 19
Matthias is known for his creativity and resourcefulness. Give him a basic premise, and he’ll come up with a slew of ideas, at which point your only challenge will be choosing which one you like best. His love of pop culture is matched only by his fondness for the bold colors and graphic compositions that give his images that extra zing, and he’s unassuming and calm as a monk, even on a chaotic set. No wonder celebrities do things for him that they won’t for other photographers.

Craig Cutler 23
Craig begins by sketching out ideas long before he’s taken a single frame. Collaboration is essential to his process, and the sketches inspire him and his clients in unexpected ways. The result? Images that stand out above the rest, whether it’s a still life, portrait, or landscape.

David Drebin 27
David is incredibly energetic and positive, and he sweeps his subjects up in his enthusiasm. They become his collaborators in his narratives, which draw from his rich imagination and the flashy worlds of nightlife and glamour. No wonder people describe David’s work as cinematic—in their own way, every one of his photos is a blockbuster.

Uwe Duettmann 31
Talk about diverse. Producing everything from awardwinning portraiture to automotive work, always with exceptional lighting, in an uber-modern style and often with a trace of humor, Uwe is one of Germany’s most accomplished commercial photographers. Behind the scenes, he’s scrupulous about every detail and is backed by a top-notch team that shares his high standards. No job is too big for Uwe, and even when it is a big job, you can be sure that he will go above and beyond.

Jim Fiscus 35
Confidence and competence. That’s what people sense when they’re on a set with Jim. He’s a natural leader, and you always have the feeling that everything’s under control. Jim is known for his unique ability to assemble the pieces of complicated visual puzzles in a singular way. And while he is a laidback Southern gentleman, everything about his work is world class.

Hans Gissinger 39
Each photo that Hans produces—whether it’s for a client or for one of his many personal projects—is sure to startle, in the best sense of the word. He’s generally a man of few words, yet he has the ability to assemble and direct massive teams in order to optimize efficiency. For images that you can almost taste, smell, and feel, no one surpasses Hans.

Rolph Gobits 43
Rolph is a master of classic environmental portraiture. His images take you away to a different time and place. His lighting is gorgeous, his approach to visual storytelling is traditional—there’s a gravitas to it—yet always his sense of humor remains intact. In other words, Rolph’s photographs have drama, but his productions don’t.

Lauren Greenfield 47
Lauren has a rare ability to capture authentic moments, whether she’s working with experienced actors or real people who’ve never set foot on a set. As a longtime documentary photographer who has been widely honored for her work in stills and in motion, she knows the power of visual storytelling—of images that ring true and stay with you.

Timothy Greenfield-Sanders 51
There’s a reason that Timothy has entered the pantheon of master portrait photographers. Straightforward, direct, and timeless, his work is a clear-eyed view into his subjects. Everyone who is anyone wants a portrait taken by him, and he has in fact photographed practically everyone who is anyone. Although, we think that through Timothy’s lens, everyone is someone.

Erik Madigan Heck 55
Erik is exceptional because he is open to experimentation, unwilling to be muted by conventionality, and possesses an unfettered artistic vision. He can communicate and collaborate with creatives at a very high level, and as a result his photographs both illuminate and elevate.

Jason “Giblin” Hindley 59
A stylish approach to color and bloody great sense of humor are only part of this talented Englishman’s charms. Jason is a sly storyteller, spinning tales often using mundane objects and seemingly ordinary locations. His photos are the kind you like right away and love upon further inspection, when you catch the witty twist that quietly awaits you.

Walter Iooss 63
Walter can shoot anyone, anywhere, in the least amount of time. A legendary sports portrait photographer, he can tell you stories about all the pro athletes: Kobe, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, you name them. He’s photographed some of the most beautiful women in the world (just check his Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue history). And you’ll always have the best sushi dinner after the shoot—even in the desert of Moab.

Nadav Kander 67
Nadav is the most published photographer in Lürzer’s Archive of all time. He loves working with young as well as the most experienced art directors on projects of all sizes and varieties, from ad campaigns to portraiture and entertainment. It is the collaboration that Nadav enjoys, explained in his own words this way: “A picture and ad invariably turn out for the better when a few talented minds, rather than one, are behind it.” It is hard to pigeonhole Nadav’s photography, as he works across so many genres, from landscape to portraits, still life to cars, and has recently become interested in the moving image too. He really is a one-of-a-kind talent and highly awarded for it from Cannes, the Lucies, the Clios, D&AD, Communication Arts, and many others.

Steven Lippman 71
Steven is a natural. Self-taught as a photographer, he’s got spot-on gut instincts that always yield compelling work, whether he’s shooting an enigmatic fashion campaign, photographing leather-and-peroxide L.A. bombshells, capturing the sand, heat, and salt of the beach lifestyle, or directing a TV commercial. He’s also intensely driven, so with Steven, you never have to wait for the perfect wave—he’ll make it happen for you.

Jeff Lipsky 75
People always look radiant in Jeff’s portraits—there’s something about the way he photographs them that just makes everyone shine. We think it’s because Jeff himself is a such a warm person and an easygoing collaborator. More than once, we’ve had clients ask if they can do every job with Jeff, and we both know they’re only half joking.

Roxanne Lowit 79
Roxanne is a legendary observer with a shrewd eye and gentle heart. At a party, backstage, or at an event, she quietly surveys the scene around her and watches for those slivers of time when everything converges into a classic moment of fabulosity. On the set of an assignment, she breezily directs the proceedings to this same level of performance, bringing a career’s worth of VIP access to everything she shoots.

Doug Menuez 83
As an award-winning documentary photographer, Doug has witnessed humanity at its best and, frankly, its most upsetting. But he has always kept a firm grip on his compassion and his optimism, and in his commercial work he chooses to celebrate what life has to offer. Few can capture honest emotions as remarkably as he can. Few are so viscerally trustworthy. Few can make you feel so‌connected.

John Midgley 87
John’s fashion photographs are like sartorial short stories. Whether it’s through location and propping or just a masterful use of light and shadow, he constructs a world around the clothes that evokes what they stand for and what it feels like to wear them. His lifestyle photos and portraits are similarly narrative and bear the same level of sophistication and style as his fashion work, all of it coming together with a kind of cool artfulness.

Michael Muller 91
What do you call someone who can climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, swim with sharks, and photograph Hollywood celebrities? Fearless. Also: 100 percent adrenaline. Michael works and thinks fast and is extremely prolific, yet he’s preternaturally calm under pressure. He’s a lot like the movie superheroes he photographs. Minus the tights, of course.

Nino MuĂąoz 95
Nino is crisp, stylish, and full of positive energy. He understands high-end fashion but can just as effortlessly carry off a gorgeous photo shoot on the beach. And when it comes to celebrities, his unpretentious, friendly nature sets the tone for a stress-free experience every time. You don’t think Gisele Bundchen, his longtime muse and collaborator, would trust herself with just any photographer, do you?

John Offenbach 99
John’s photos communicate the absurdities in life, often humorous or quirky. Whether creating large-scale productions for clients or producing his own work, he gravitates toward simple and beautiful observations where order is created out of chaos and the idea jumps off the page.

Tom Rafalovich 103
While raving about Tom’s work, clients use words like optimistic, honest, fresh, relaxed, and warm. If you agree that successful lifestyle photography is about showing people enjoying the good life, and making it all feel believable, Tom is your man.

Matthew Rolston 107
Matthew is the gatekeeper of Hollywood royalty. Perhaps it’s because he works with grace even under the most extreme pressure. Or the fact that his magical beauty light makes everyone he photographs seem ageless and look fabulous. It could also be his incredible ability to produce. Need him to do numerous shots and TV in one day? Consider it done. He does it all, and flawlessly.

Martin Sigal 111
Martin is a superstar with zero attitude. A generalist who can shoot anything. A specialist who comprehends every detail. A pro at post who never forgets to follow his heart. A humorist and a humanist. In South America, he’s numero uno on every important client’s wish list, and we think it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the world catches on.

Jan Steinhilber 115
Jan is a technical master. His composites are so skillfully executed that you’ll find yourself thinking he created everything in camera, even though this might not always be the case. He’s also an innovative problem solver who relishes the concepting process and will create elaborate treatments so that his clients can see what he knows to be true, which is that anything is possible.

Art Streiber 119
Art can conduct a symphony of complicated productions with ease, a rare gift that has endeared him to clients and talent alike. Group shots? Forget it—Art is peerless. He makes it look easy and, more important, feel easy. And although many celebrities dread having their picture taken (it’s ironic, we know), they enjoy having their portrait taken by Art Streiber. They know what we know: He’s easygoing, exacting, and a professional through and through.

Liz Von Hoene 123
Liz radiates enthusiasm and optimism, a winning combination that she matches with equal parts whimsy and sophistication. Her thorough, imaginative treatments telegraph her attention to detail and devotion to the project, and her determination on set is unflappable—Liz arrives prepared to come through for clients and then some. And while each of her projects is individual, her clients tend to remember them the same way: enchanting.

Michael Wirth 127
Michael is proof that it’s possible to be an expert in fashion and beauty and yet completely void of pretentiousness. He knows how to get the most out of his subjects: the flawless skin tones, luxurious hair, luscious good looks. For beauty shots that are clean and simple, he has no match. But when it’s time to turn up the makeup factor, Michael’s got the panache to make that dazzle, too.

Luca Zordan 131
Perhaps the most exciting, honest kids photographer in the business, whether we’re talking fashion, portraits, or lifestyle. Luca’s photos, with their fantastic use of color and real moments, are a clear illustration of the special performance that one can extract when a photographer has the complete trust of a child. He understands kids and respects them, and their belief in him is apparent in each image he shoots—in the world of wonder they open up to him and, as a result, to us.
