This book is dedicated to our photographers and their studios, to our clients, and to the many talented creatives, art buyers, editors, producers, and stylists with whom we’ve worked. It’s been an honor.

Welcome

For this year’s SMart Book, we asked our photographers to turn the camera on themselves and create a self-portrait. We didn’t set any aesthetic rules—they were free to shoot horizontal or vertical, to opt for color or black & white, and even to not show their face. But we did establish one important mandate: They had to create a self-portrait that reflected their photographic style. The assignment was more difficult than you’d expect. Our photographers are used to being on the other side of the lens. They’re accustomed to interpreting other people and subjects. But they really rose to the occasion. We think the self-portraits you see here, placed alongside their commercial work, are fresh, fearless, and often a lot of fun. We hope you enjoy. Regards,

Bill Stockland

ÂŤ Really, I guess my work is all about relationships, whether it be just between the subject and myself, or with a couple, a family, or a group of people. I never judge my subjects. I try to approach them all with the same empathetic, intimate, curious, and fun-loving nature. Âť

ÂŤ I might be the luckiest guy in the world. I worked in the ballroom at the Italian Embassy in Madrid and in the Diplomatic Reception Room at the White House. Had lunch at a taco truck parked at a gas station in Eagle Rock and on the patio of the Carlton Hotel in Cannes. Did group shots of 5 reality stars, 19 soap stars, and 116 movie stars. Photographed a fire chief, a quarterback, and a race-car driver. Worked with Kim Kardashian and Kermit the Frog. And that was just last year. Âť
