why a sparkly new bedroom was just the tonic for Philippa She has remained resilient throughout There’s nothing like a bit of sparkle to brighten up your day.
That was until the Ellen Timney Foundation offered a helping hand and aided by the Stockton Riverside College students, the work got underway.
And that is exactly what Stockton Riverside College trade skills students delivered to Brotton youngster Philippa.
Diagnosed with leukaemia in March 2016, Philippa has undergone two years of extensive treatment.
After hearing about the four-year-old’s lengthy battle with leukaemia, the team stepped up to help carry out a bedroom makeover.
But Phil said: “She has remained resilient throughout.”
Organised and funded by the Ellen Timney Foundation, the students created a sparkly pink haven for the youngster. Dad Phil said: “She had been pestering for a year and a half to have her bedroom decorated. With everything that was going on we hadn’t been able to do it.”
Brickwork, Joinery and Painting and Decorating students worked together to complete the bedroom. Painting and Decorating tutor Tony Ferguson said: “We were more than happy to lend a hand after hearing about Philippa’s story. Plus it was a great experience for students as they got to work on a real job with real clients and that is something you can’t create in a workshop.”

NEWS IN BRIEF Production Arts students go behind the scenes of a thrifty Atonement re-shoot. Makeup for Production Arts students got an insight into life behind the scenes of a movie shoot as the team put their skills to good use helping to turn more than 80 volunteers into “war-torn soldiers”. Part of a thrifty re-shoot of the famous Dunkirk beach scene from the 2007 film Atonement, the aim was to once again turn Redcar beach into the backdrop from the Oscar winning film. Stockton Riverside College student Michelle, 18, said: “It was a great experience and really fun. It’s lovely to have been a part of something like this.” Millie, 17, said: “It was quite exciting to see everything happen and to gain that experience.” The filming in Redcar was part of the build up to the 2018 Festival of Thrift, with artist and filmmaker Richard DeDominici commissioned by the Festival to create a thrifty Redux version of the five-minute scene, using local people, cheap props and a handheld camera.
Enterprising Stockton celebrates future talent. If you have ever fancied the idea of opening your own business at Stockton Riverside College we can help give you the skills you need. These students did and now they have not only launched their own small theatre company, Dynamic Infinite, but the fledgling business is also an award winner. With the small enterprise picking up the Social Impact Award and also named overall winner at the Enterprising Stockton Awards, Performing Arts Acting student Lucy said: “We didn’t expect this at all. We are very grateful to everyone that helped us.” Enterprising Stockton brings together businesses, education providers and voluntary organisations to share ideas on ways to encourage enterprise. The awards are hosted at Stockton Riverside College and recognise the achievements of both student enterprises and small businesses across the area.

NETA
students get a lesson in road safety Young drivers were given a hard hitting lesson in road safety as the emergency services brought their important message to NETA Training. From watching a student who volunteered to be cut free from a car, to seeing an accident brought to life through virtual reality, the event aimed to highlight the fatal four areas increasing the risk on the roads. “Part of what we are trying to do is give young people control measures and strategies to keep themselves and friends safe,” said Cleveland Fire Brigade’s Learn and Live Co-ordinator, Andrew Bright. “That can be something as simple as understanding the risks and having the confidence to speak up.” The dangers of drink/drug driving, speeding, driving while distracted and not wearing seatbelts, were driven home to the NETA learners during the crash course in road safety.
Logistics Academy results in a job offer for Emily. Emily got more than she expected from her time at SRC Bede Sixth Form. She not only walked away with a top set of qualifications but a new job as well. Taking part in the College’s Career Ready Logistics Academy saw the 18-year-old complete a four-week internship at PD Ports. Impressing bosses during her time there, it is no surprise the company has now snapped her up, offering a higher apprenticeship in civil engineering. “The internship changed my mind about the type of engineering I wanted to do, I’d previously been totally set on mechanical engineering until I learnt more about things like material science,” she said. Delivered by Stockton Riverside College the Career Ready Logistics Academy is part of the Tees Valley Logistics Academy and aims to raise awareness of the logistics industry. Students are offered the chance to learn about the industry through site visits, workshops, mentoring and an internship, alongside their full-time courses. NEWS SHOUT Autumn 2018
