watch how it’s done task Bob Rickert was asked to re-launch the new model of the Toyota 4Runner. This new model had more power and more capabilities that they wanted to show off.

Challenge “What they really wanted to say was that there’s nothing else on the market like it.” He spent time researching and brainstorming ideas with his team. Rickert found an article in Vanity Fair which was a series of interviews with the 10 greatest living adventurers. “I kept thinking that if 4Runner is supposed to be about Adventure, and if Michael Jordan can be attached to shoes, why can’t the greatest adventurers and their adventures be attached to the best adventure vehicle on the planet? We just needed to find a way to do it.”

stumped “I wrote about 50 lines and set it down for a day. Then another 150. And set it all down again. I took a few days off for once and decided to just fill my time with things that are interesting. A few days later I went for a swim near Manhattan Beach and the line, ‘Follow In The Footsteps Of The World’s Greatest Adventurers’ just kind of appeared. You can put that under the 4Runner itself and get it.”

Have you hit

a wall?

Sometimes hitting a creative wall can lead us to our best ideas. As creative thinkers we must learn specific techniques and habits to move past frustration. We asked 25 SOJC students what they do when they are frustrated with an idea.

“I take classes that constantly discuss the “When I am frustrated things I am passionate about an idea the first it about and force me thing I do is go swimming. to think about how my Something about the water refreshes my mind and lets interests affect my own life and change my own ideas my focus sink in.” about the future.”

“I find a way to make the project entertaining for me. Usually drawing is incorporated in this process for me.”

“I like to speak my ideas rather than write them down because it allows my mind to wander rather than attempting to write down what’s going on in my head.”

“Step away from the school work and find another activity to distract me for a while. Once I have calmed down I will revisit my work and get through it.”

“Try to break the project down into parts that I can easily do first.”

“Ever since I understood that my passion (design) is an essential part of EVERYTHING, I have been able to apply this concept to everything, from art, to literature, to science, etc.

“Take some time to listen to music and relax.”

“Take time to calm “I try to think about my problem in a new way, down, usually work out or shower.” from someone elses perspective.”

“Walk away; give it space so I don’t let my frustration consume me.”

“I go to the gym. Running helps clear my mind to let my ideas in.”
