SOFB - who are you, where you at the moment and what you up to? J - Well i live, In Riverside California and currently I work and go to school and in my downtime i try to ride as much as i can but lately i haven’t been able to as much due to a broken hand.
SOFB - What makes you so good at riding fixed? J -haha i’m not too sure but i’d like to be a hell of a lot better !
SOFB - Could you tell us about the last two competitions/jams or road trips you went to? J - The most recent trip i went on was to seattle to film for Cant Fool the Youth 2 dvd with the grime team and slumworm, Santos and Jensen. We took the Chrome van from SF to Seattle to meet up with the ZLOG/CSK dudes and everyone killed it out there. Such a good time too! Theres so many good spots out there with little coverage, the DVD should be sick once it drops, be sure to check it out.
SOFB - Do you like to ride street or park more? Are you better at one more than the other? J - Im all street all the way, you’ll never see a single clip of me in a skatepark. I like riding my bmx bike in skateparks but not fixed. Single lined tricks in skateparks look dumb to me and it’s real hard to flow a skatepark and make it look good. Skateparks are just training grounds. In my opinion this sport was started in the streets and thats where it should stay! STOKED ON FIXED BIKES

SOFB - Everyone enjoys your edits who makes these webbies happend when we can expect next one? J - Well, my first edit was filmed pretty much all by Gus Molina and edited myself. This last edit was all filmed and edited by my good friend Patrick Taber, and i look forward to working on the next one with him. As far as an edit you can see me in the next Cant Fool the Youth dvd.
SOFB - I know that some riders get scared of big jumps and obstacles. How do you push yourself? J - Well, i don’t ever try anything i don’t think i can do. Whether i’m right or not I cant find out till i try it. When im going for something i feel is pretty big i try to clear my head and put the most metal shit i have on my ipod and huck myself. I try to stay in the mindset, if it can be done on bmx it can be done on fixed, thats the thought process that pushes our sport.
SOFB - You inspire a lot of new riders what you will say to them?
SOFB - How important is your crew? J - I wouldn’t still be riding i didn’t have a solid crew. I really only ride with bmxers which pushes me. I only ride with fixed kids when i leave my town as im the only fixed rider where i live.
SOFB - What is the next of your projects? J - My next project is probablI want to work on a short winter edit and then i have some tour clips coming out int the next Cant Fool the Youth dvd. Follow me on instagram to stay up with me @jonnydirt

J - Keep doin your thing, this is such a niche sport that we need to keep progressing it if you want it to survive. Over saturation would be the down fall of the sport. Lets keep it alive, stop filming in skateparks and go back to where the sport started at and belongs, in the streets. Filming pushes your self to get better but dont make it your driving force. Just have fun!

Bike paradise! Thanks to Dan Marsh from marsh-mallows.com bike holidays I did have chance to check this island by myself. I didn’t know what to expect as you can here stories.. Im not kind of person who believe in stereotypes! And this time was no difference reality is more surprising then you think. I will start from the point that Majorca it more like bike paradise or Atlantis with wild history of biking. Home for many Europeans cycling teams.. They have it all road, mtb, bmx, fixed gear.. Mountains, flats and in biggest number concentrated in one place velodromes.. And what left of the golden ERA (but that’s on page 30) STOKED ON FIXED BIKES

First Alife which is around for more then 4 years and Yeah store is still fresh. I spend some time chatting with owner of Alife about history of fixed bikes around Island. SOFB ONLINE MAG

NIGHT RIDE Berlin – Baltic Sea

Im always up for some good story’s, thanks to the 8bar crew they have a lot to tell as these boys are always out riding. Nice one! Please anjoy!
The idea to do a Night Ride from Berlin to the Baltic Sea just came one day before the trip. I wondered what kind of ride we could do the coming weekend… the weather forecast said it is going to be really hot with over 30°C (90 °F) maximum. This sounded perfect for a day at the beach… but not for cycling all day long! That’s how the idea came up to do a Night Ride. According to the weather forecast it won’t cool down below 15 °C (60 °F) during the night... The conditions were perfect. Now the only question was where to? By the predicted weather, a lake would be the perfect destination... What about the Baltic Sea?!? 160 miles overnight without sleep on a fixed gear bike? Is that possible? SOFB ONLINE MAG

After lunch, it was still not out of my head and I called Max to ask him what he thought of the idea... “I’m in” was his answer. Now there was no turning back. We asked some more friends and at the end we were six riders. Max, Gerard, Basti and I wrote on a Fixed Gear bike, Florian on a Cyclocross Single Speed and Leander on a Road bike. We met on Saturday (Aug, 18th) at 11:30pm at Alexanderplatz, which is in the centre of Berlin and headed off to the Baltic Sea at midnight. No one ever rode this route before. Only Florian knew some sections. The route which I planned on the previous afternoon led us mostly along the BerlinUsedom cycle path... which turned out to be more suitable for touring bikes. Cobblestones and narrow forest roads were not perfect conditions for a Night Ride. Nevertheless, the scenery was stunning itself… The silence and the starry skies are simply indescribable. Initially, we have moved forward quite quickly, and made only a few short breaks to fill our jersey pockets with food. But after around 60 miles we started to feel the first noticeable signs of fatigue. It was four in the night, completely dark and our bodies showed us that they were exhausted. The only thing I concentrated on was the rear wheel of the person in front. Once in front it was even more tiring, because you had to find the right lane for the whole group, considering that they are just starring at your rear wheel now… Our lamps were playing shadow games and I started to fell partly into a kind of trance. My brain did not work 100% anymore and my body was focused on the essentials... Left foot, right foot, left food, right food. Then I got into a flow, which I had not yet attained so far. I was exhausted but happy at the same time. All the other passengers had a similar feeling, and we just kept on going... our speed was still at around 19 mph average and there was still good pressure on our pedals. STOKED ON FIXED BIKES

Unfortunately Basti, the fourth fixed gear rider was struggling with health problems (which I do not want to explain in detail, I only say that the five bananas could not counteract) and had to leave the team at Prenzlau to go back to Berlin by train. The next few kilometers we were all very quiet... but we had to keep going because our bodies started to cool down. At 5am it finally began to dawn… It was a really nice atmosphere as the sun slowly rose to the sky, the fog was still in the valleys and even a few deer and rabbits crossed our paths. We were all in good mood and felt already on the home stretch. But then at 7 in the morning at around 110 miles there came another low point... Our bodies were really exhausted and showed it to us. The concentration ceased and the view was on blinders. Until now we didn’t do a big break. So we set Anklam, which was around 15 miles ahead, as our intermediate goal. We didn’t consider that the upcoming miles are mostly on a sandy dirt track. On the last kilometers we went on autopilot mode until we reached the sign "Anklam". We stopped at the first bakery that we saw and sat down on the green stripes on a parking lot… After numerous croissants and pieces of cake we felt strengthened for the last 30 miles.

This brake was really good... we easily managed to ride the last 30 miles and finally arrvied at the Baltic Sea. When we arrived at the seaside resort we could hardly believe it. We made it! We were all relieved and had a big grin on our faces! After the obligatory photo, we went into the sea to cool down. Then we relaxed until late afternoon on the beach and went back to Berlin by train in the evening! To be continued!!!

What really fascinated about Majorca that Guillermo Timoner multiply world champion is living on island in city of Felanitx. Together with his world wide domination bring Track racing in Majorca on great level. From the 50s almost every city in Majorca have a Velodrome. I find this really intresting and decided to find remains of this great era! First one still in really good condition build around 1987 Arena, Palma SOFB ONLINE MAG

I was not so interested in new objects like Palma Arena build in 2007 for World Championship.. I was more into outdoor tracks. I took it upon myself and together with local knowledge and google maps try to locate them. In total i find 6! Not bad for small island. And later on that day I jump on my bike and try to see them by myself. Some of them are quite far its good to start early. I will need extra day. That day I focus on Son moix , Sta Maria and Algaida. STOKED ON FIXED BIKES
Algaida, my personal favourite.. to get inside you need to climb the fence.. Its amazing construction wise and size, you can just feel atmosphere of the place! SOFB ONLINE MAG

_ Iride was born from the desire of myself and four of my best friends (Walter Carrubba, Francesco “K” Capitani, Rocco and Luca Bizzarri) to bring Italy in the subculture. To build fixed bike design and Italian quality. We started at the end of 2008, a hub of about 500 square meters, trying to produce everything ourselves and choosing only the best accessories. At the end of 2011 we opened the first store in Italy entirely dedicated hub fixed subcultures, and will soon be complemented by a cafeteria and other side projects. Our Hub is a great family, open to everyone and everyone is free to participate and share. Our “Racing Team” is composed by Francesco Martucci, Raffaele Maccari, Nicolas Varani, Samuel Cai and Gabriele Grazioli. They are engaged in all international competitions most prestigious and test all our products. Our favorite brands, in addition to our course, are King Kog, Incase, Cinelli, Legor Cycles and Rapha.

Hallow When you’re a grown up, life can be predictable. We hurry along, from A to B, we avoid eye contact with others, we get to where we’re going, while the rest of the world does its own thing. Very little surprises us anymore. On Saturday night, that changed. The streets of Leeds were filled with 150 cyclists, their faces hollowed out into painted skeletons, their bikes hung with cobwebs and lights, as they rode, en masse, around the dark city to a backdrop of cheering and music. This was something special. People stopped. They stared. They left their houses and turned their heads from passing cars. The night was filled with the cries of the cyclists and the world stopped to watch.

This was the long-awaited North Race Halley Cat event. Four different events – sprint, skids, track stand and hill climb competitions in four different locations around the city. The participants? A gruesome group of faceless phantoms who took to the streets in a battle of speed, balance and sheer determination. This was cycling at its best. No gung-ho EPO or shaven legs, no pretentious posing, just good, old-fashioned Halloween jinks- ghost versus ghost. The sprints pitted one cyclist against another in a series of knock out rounds. The pace was good, there were a few falls, but the top spot was claimed by Sam Smith who also went on to slide his way to success in the skid contest. The track stand prize was grabbed by Andy Warby, whilst Jacob Dean was crowned King of the Mountains in the hill competition. The points collated, the overall winners were declared as: First place – Sam Smith Second place – Dan Jay-Webster Third place – Jacob Dean Girls’ hill climb – Sophie Edmondson Best dressed bike – Jack Johnson

Cycling is growing as a sport. The number of people taking to their bikes is increasing week on week, year on year. At the heart of this is the riders themselves – every single one. 44 bike polo players from all over the UK arrived, promptly at 9.30am (many were a little bleary-eyed from the BFF party the night before). The organisers then shuffled the players into random teams of 3. The players  competed in successive games of Swiss Rounds. My favourite film "Line of Sight" even I've seen it a dozen times on my laptop but actually seeing on the big screen was even better. The other banger of a film was "Where the trial ends" mtb free ride madness. After the films we head to few stands got ourself some fine Italian beer then pop into this huge space with bike exso, polo's, sprint race and live music happy days.

There was 1 rider who was ahead of everyone by 15mins but just before one of the check point, he crash with a local motorist resulting in a bent frame "gutted" but help was at hand we gave some local beer "sponsor 32" & watch the rest of the alley riders Iride check point. There was a funny moment, 1 of the dodici rider and Lucas Brunel was filming him along the ride, he was high on life and forgot his messenger bag & his spirit at one of the check points. I hope Luca has this on film & will be screening it next BFF Milano. Last rider in now let's get this drinking on the go, cheers to "staircase to hell" ride or shall I say "cobbles through hell" ride hah.

Through the worldwide web speaking to few friends from the fixed bike groups there was a meeting in Rennes France where Thomas AKA Tomypunk / soundtrack which is his home town, with a new form crew “Krewl" along the ride we had Ketjes, soundtrack, Nucult, London, Rotterdam and other was here!! When I landed I though this was a small town but it turn out they had a few good university & good city life. Food was amazing we literally stuff ourself with crepes fill with sausages n cheese, wash down with some fine cider.

It was always a pleasure to catch up with Nucult which I shot Tromss for the front cover and always great to meet new riders only my journey. Saskia Haex Saskia Haex is a creative that refuses to choose and work in just one discipline. Overlooking her work it’s very clear she has a thing for handdrawn type, screenprinting and illustration. Starting every project with an idea and letting the technique follow... The idea leads the way. She seems intrigued by traffic and vehicles that try to get from A to B, drawing naive landscapes with meandering roads. Perspective is often totally ignored making her pictures appear to be as flat as the country she comes from. Last spring she started her own small clothing brand called Snakebite Bike Gang. Releasing new apparel for bikelovers on an irregular basis. All prints are and inspired by (all disciplines of) cycling. All items are limited and handprinted by Saskia herself. Milano 2012 Red Hook Crit.
100 street and road racers from around the world gathered near the city center for this special bi-annual event. I manage to captured some snaps of this 22 lap brakeless fixed Bikes.

This race was epic so much thing was happening, Neil was the man to beat as he’s won this 3time straight. Race kick off with the leaders crashing on the 4th corner with Neil & Evan, sadly Neil could not continue as his back wheel was missing a few spokes, as for Evans his bike was ok so he quickly jump back on and manage to catch up with the front pack. The race was divided the front pack of 10/15 riders, middle pack then what they called the cold meat table back pack. Eduard was the rider to get the tempo up at the front hence he’s a road cyclist follow by Iride team & Mash chasing him. this was like tour of France last day in Paris where the race was fast tempo, every few laps someone would take the lead.

Francesco from Iride manage to catch him and lead the race for the next few laps until Rainier was the hardest working rider from the Mash crew to catch up with Francesco. Once caught up and then everything started to get mix up and it was anybody race, came down to the last 100metres after the hairpin.. STOKED ON FIXED BIKES

to my amazement Evan who crash on the first lap with Neil was sprinting for the win with Mash, Iride & Eduard on his tail boom Evan win. Only 28 from 100 riders finish the race but I did see some drama where the leading pack lap 1 rider and about to lap him again before the Marshall had to take him down as he wouldn't get of the track.
This was a great race meeting, now with the popularity with more riders competing I saw a situation which took the sport & riders to pro level. There was mis-communication with organiser and riders about having medical statement/doctors note needed at registration before the event, to a lot of the riders who travel far to this event who work hard to get there to find out this was a surprise.. Despite that event riders push that aside and had fun what they came to do. Looking forward to next year.

Made In England Ricky Feather: “Kayti and I were approached earlier this year by Matthew Sowter ( www.saffronframeworks.com ) to be involved in the making of a book focusing on the craft of frame building right here on British soil. We travelled the whole of England from farm yards to central London visiting, interviewing and photographing the best England has to offer. It has been a wonderful experience visiting everyones workshops, getting to see where such an amazing bunch of creations are born. Made In England found it’s name as nearly every frame builder in the country had a Record vice, which all have Made In England cast into the side and being that the vice is where we as frame builder spend a good 80% of our time, it just made sense”

Lucas Brunelle I’m a big fan of Lucas movies and I’m not the only one.. I had a chance to meet him in person during ECMC in Edinburg and then in Milano. He is really passionated about bikes! I did saw his Line of Sight many times and its a great experience! Please check interview!
SOFB - You lives in Boston, how this influence you and your work? LB – I’m not there much – only three weeks this entire year. People are so close minded and conservative in Boston that it’s motivated me to expand my vision to the rest of the world. I went to 11 countries last year and 8 so far this year. I do have close friends in Boston who think the way I do and we’re making a difference. SOFB - whats your favourite time to film? LB – Daytime is usually my favourite time to film unless I’m in a very electric city like Tokyo or Vegas which looks better at night SOFB - Who is your favourite rider to film with? LB – It varies but Austin Horse and I have had the most amazing adventures riding from country-to-country. Alfred Bobé Jr. and Crihs Thorman are also amazing riders moving through traffic very skillfully. Wolfpack Hustle was an amazing team to film because of how coordinated they worked together.

SOFB - Film or digital? LB – Both, we shot a lot of 16mm film for Line of Sight. The Brooklyn Bridge and Guatemala absolutely called for 16mm film. Many other parts of Line of Sight are 16mm film. I’m a sucker for film. However I don’t use film on my helmet cams because this would throw my back out first run. SOFB - You riding yourself, how much does this affect the way you look at the sport trough your lens? LB – A lot, I ride very fast and love to show people what this is like. There’s nothing like speeding through a city three times as fast as any other traffic. SOFB - I did see your bag how heavy its? LB – The helmet and cameras are about 7kg SOFB - Minimal setup? LB – I don’t do minimal setup because I need better quality especially in low light. I’d love to do minimal setup as it’s much lighter and less money but the picture quality is not as good.
SOFB - Dream location for film this year? LB – Descending The Big Island of Hawaii all the way to the ocean floor underwater. Another place is the industrial landscape under the superhighways of New Jersey and Newark Airport. I love riding in industrial areas. SOFB - If you could give younger you advice on his way to the first video project what would you tell him? LB – I would tell a younger person filming their first video project to keep their vision no matter what. If they do then everything else will fall into place. I toiled for years making my film. It was so expensive in time and money that it almost forced me into bankruptcy. But I succeeded! You have to be willing to take huge risks to get huge return. When these big gambles work out it changes your life for the better forever. SOFB - Any final thoughts you would like to add? LB – Do your thing and don’t care what other people think.
