SOFB- WHAT MAKES YOU SO GOOD AT RIDING FIXED? I COME FROM A BACKGROUND OF R ACING BMX. I R ACED BMX FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS AND DEVELOPED MUCH OF MY BIKE HANDLING SKILLS FROM THOSE YEARS. THAT COUPLED WITH THE ABILIT Y TO PUSH MY BODY PAST THE T YPICAL BREAKING POINT MAKE ME A WELL ROUNDED RIDER.
THE PAST TWO R ACES I COMPETED IN WERE RED HOOK BARCELONA AND FUXJAGD. RHC I ENDED UP AS THE FASTEST AMERICAN QUALIFIER AND 13TH OVER ALL. A MID R ACE CR ASH TOOK ME OUT OF THE R ACE UNFORTUNATELY. FUXJAGD WAS A VERY INTERESTING R ACE THAT PUT RIDERS 1 ON 1. YOU CHASED EACH OTHER FROM OPPOSITE ENDS OF A CIRCUL AR “OBSTACLE” COURSE. I QUALIFIED 3RD AND PL ACED 1ST OVER ALL FOR THE DAY.
SOFB- YOU’RE DEFINITELY ONE OF THE RIDERS TO LOOK TO.. BIG INSPIR ATION FOR SURE.. ANY WORDS OF ADVICE FOR THOSE WHO ARE JUST STARTING? ALWAYS MAKE SURE TO HAVE FUN WITH RIDING WETHER YOU ARE JUST CRUISING AROUND TOWN OR OUT R ACING AGAINST THE BEST OF THE BEST. HAVING FUN IS ALWAYS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN CYCLING.
SOFB- COULD YOU TELL US ABOUT THE L AST TWO COMPETITIONS/ JAMS OR ROAD TRIPS YOU WENT TO?
15
SOFB - WHO IS ONE OF YOUR FAVOURITE FIXED GEAR RIDERS RIGHT NOW? MY FAVORITE FIXED GEAR RIDER AT THE MOMENT WOULD BE SEAN MARTIN. HE AND I HAVE BEEN FRIENDS FOR A WHILE NOW, BUT HE IS GENUINELY ONE OF THE NICEST MOST KIND HEARTED CYCLISTS I KNOW. HE DOES SO MUCH TO PUSH THE CYCLING COMMUNIT Y FORWARD.
16
SOFB- WHAT IS THE NEXT OF YOUR PROJECTS? MY NEXT BIG PROJECT IS MY BICYCLE TOUR FROM CHICAGO TO L A. IT IS A TRIP THAT WILL BE SELF SUPPORTED AND CONSIST OF 45 DAYS FOR RIDING AND CAMPING. I WILL BE RIDING ALONG THE HISTORIC ROUTE 66.
I TRULY HAVE TO THANK ALL OF MY SPONSORS, RED BULL, STATE BICYCLE CO, OAKLEY, SWIF TWICK, AND POL ARPRO. WITHOUT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM THIS DREAM OF RIDING A BICYCLE FOR A LIVING. ALSO THANK YOU TO ALL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY THAT HAVE SUPPORTED ME FROM DAY ONE.
SOFB- L AST QUESTION; ANY SHOUT OUTS!?

WHO OR WHAT IS MOTÖRREEEN? MOTÖRREEEN IS BR ANDED RUST. IT’S THE SUBVERSIVE SIDE OF CONSUMPTION AS MUCH AS THE EXPRESSION OF MY PASSION FOR DECAY AND ITS INHERENT BEAUT Y. CONTROL AND SKILL TO REPLICATE IT AT WILL, HEAVILY INFLUENCED BY THE R ATROD SCENE, HEAVY INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY AND CUSTOM MOTORCYCLES. HI, MY NAME IS RENÉ DONNER AND I AM THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND MOTÖRREEEN. THE NAME GREW OUT OF MY LFGSS.COM FORUM NAME “REEEN” AND A STR ANGE LIKING OF HEAVY METAL MUSIC WHEN WORKING ON BIKES AND ENGINES. I WAS BORN IN FORMER EAST GERMANY AND WITH 37 YEARS OF AGE AM OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER LIFE BEFORE THE COLL APSE OF THE BERLIN WALL. I SPENT MY TEENAGE YEARS IN THE THEN UNITED BERLIN, THE VAST AVAIL ABILIT Y OF ABANDONED INDUSTRIAL SPACES FINDING THE BEST SKATEBOARD SPOTS AND WALLS TO HIT WITH SPR AY PAINT. I FINISHED UNIVERSIT Y IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND MEDIA PRODUCTION, LIVED AND WORKED IN BERLIN, THEN A FEW YEARS IN BERGEN, NORWAY, AND SINCE 8 YEARS CALL LONDON MY HOME. WHERE DID YOU ACQUIRE YOUR SKILLS? I ALWAYS BEEN TAKING PARTS IN URBAN SCENES EVOLVING A ROUND GR AFFITI, SKATEBOARDING AND BMX AND DIRTBIKES. MY FIRST MOPED WAS MODDED WITH KNOBBY T YRES, REROUTED EXHAUST AND IT HAD TO GET A NEW COLOUR ON THE GAS TANK AND PANELS WHEN I WAS 15. EASY TO GET INTO CUSTOM COLOUR RESPR AYS WITH TONS OF PAINT CANS AROUND YOU. WHAT KEPT ME INTERESTED WAS THAT IT’S QUITE HARD TO GET A PERFECT FINISH. FOR LONG INDUSTRIAL PERFECTION WAS THE GOAL ONLY TO REALISE, ONCE I WAS ABLE TO ACHIEVE IT YEARS L ATER, THE REAL BEAUT Y WAS THE IMPERFECT, THE ORGANIC REACTION BETWEEN THE ANONYMOUS INDUSTRIAL OBJECT AND TIME/USE/LOVE/NEGLECT CREATING A UNIQUE OBJECT - GIVING AN IDENTIT Y. THE SKILLS COME FROM YEARS OF TRIAL AND ERROR AND HIGHLY INTEREST DRIVEN LEARNING. ONCE ABLE TO CONTROL THE PROCESS OF WET SPR AYING, I STARTED TO DECONSTRUCT THE “FRESH PAINTED” LOOK TO GET THE RIGHT FEEL OF WHAT I COULD ONLY EXPRESS AS MOTÖRREEEN.

WHAT IS YOUR BICYCLING BACKGROUND? I NEVER WAS WITHOUT A BIKE SINCE I WAS 4 OR 5 YEARS OLD. ALWAYS TRYING TO TAKE THAT CORNER FASTER, JUMP FURTHER OR SKID LONGER. 1985 OR SO, I WAS LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO WATCH THE BMX BANDITS ON A THEN ILLEGAL WESTERN T V CHANNEL. I WOULDN’T TALK ABOUT ANY THING ELSE THAN BMX FOR A YEAR, WHEN THE L ACK BEING ABLE TO GO AN BUY ONE - WE TALK COMMUNIST EAST GERMANY - HAD MY PARENTS ASK A FR AMEBUILDER TO BUILD ONE UP FOR ME. IT WAS WHAT THEY THOUGHT A BMX BIKE LOOKED LIKE ANYWAY. I HAND PAINTED IT ... OF COURSE! THEN DURING UNIVERSIT Y AND ONWARDS IN NORWAY I WAS INTO CUSTOM XC MOUNTAIN BIKES UNTIL I HIT LONDON. THE COURIERS RODE SOMETHING, I HAVEN’T SEEN BEFORE. STEEL WAS REAL. TR ACK FR AMES AND FIXED TR ANSMISSION. THE FIRST VIDEOS CAME MADE IT OVER FROM A YOUNG AND FEARLESS SCENE IN NYC, HUMBLE BEGINNINGS OF THE RED HOOK R ACE AS ONE OF MANY UNDERGROUND COURIER R ACES. I COT A CR APPY FR AME, BUILT ONE UP AND NEVER LOOKED BACK AT RIDING SOMETHING ELSE THAN FIXED. IT WAS IN LONDON WHERE I FOUND MY TR AFFIC. IT FLIPPED FROM A CURSE TO MY DAILY DOSE OF ADRENALIN WHEN I GOT MY BIKE UP AND RUNNING. FIXED. RISERS AND A MASSIVE BAG. I ALWAYS HAD THE HABIT OF TWEAKING LOOK AND PERFORMANCE OF MY THINGS. COULD NEVER REALLY LET MY MIND OFF OF TINKERING AND ENHANCING, OF RE-DESIGNING MY BIKES. FIRST MY OWN, THEN FRIENDS’ NOW FOR CUSTOMERS.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PROJECT SO FAR, AND WHY? 8BAR? THE 8BAR SPECIAL ED WAS A TRUE CHALLENGE. STEFAN FROM 8BAR BIKES BERLIN AND ME CLICKED ON FIRST SIGHT AND DECIDED THEN AND THERE TO DO A COLL AB TOGETHER. IT TOOK A WHILE TO GET IT RIGHT ACTUALLY, BUT AS IT COMBINES TWO OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS - RUST AND CAMO INTO ONE POST-APOCALYPTIC PAINT JOB - IT SIMPLY HAD TO HAPPEN. THIS GENER ATED QUITE A BUZZ AND I GET LOADS IF INTERESTING IDEAS RUN PAST ME NOW. I CAN’T ACCOMMODATE ALL OF THEM BUT I LOVE TO WORK ON MOTORCYCLE HELMETS, GAS TANKS AND UNUSUAL OBJECTS IF THEY FIT IN MY NEW STUDIO AT R AW PAINT CUSTOMS. WHAT’S THE BEST, AND WORST, THINGS ABOUT CYCLING IN LONDON? BEST THINGS: TEMPER ATURES ARE MILD THROUGHOUT THE WINTER - ALL YEAR RIDING AND YES, TR AFFIC! WORST THINGS: TR AFFIC :] AND TOO SPEEDY CARS DRIVING THROUGH THE TIGHT, CHAOTIC LONDON ROADS. YOU GOT TO WATCH YOUR BACK ON AND OFF THE ROAD. BIKE THEF T IS BIG KICK IN THE TEETH HERE TOO. ABOUT BEER? THE BEERS ARE A ONE OFF AND WHERE PL ANNED TO BE USED IN A BIT OF A BR AND EVENT T YPE THING THAT ME AND MY THEN PARTNER DR AF TED UP AT SOME POINT. THE IDEA WAS TO R AISE OUR PROFILE BY SET TING UP AND EVENT WHILE INCORPOR ATING WORK, PRODUCTS AND STUFF FROM THE MANY GOOD PEOPLE WE CALL FRIENDS AND LOVE TO WORK WITH LIKE JOHN CARDAKARIS. HE HAS THIS THINGABOUT MAKING BEER. I LOVE BEER, SO WE COMMISSIONED 3 CUSTOM CR AF T BATCHES. BUT THEN LIFE TOOK A LOOK AT OUR PL ANS AND SAID “NAH, NOT GONNA HAPPEN!” I’MSPREADING THOSE BOT TLES AMONG FRIENDS AND EARLY HOUR SUPPORTERS AS A THANK YOU. DREAM PROJECT? THAT’LL BE NO DOUBT TO HELP CREATE THE LOOK OF A R AT BEAST USED IN MAD MAX OR THE WALKING DEAD.

“Why i ride 24” wheels on FGFS?” Three years ago i was watching a 24” Mtb video and i just got the idea of putting 24” on a Fgfs and i kept ahead with the idea and i built a G.O.A.T. with that wheels. I rode almost 2 years and a half with a frame and fork made for 26” inch wheels with 24” and i liked it.

Four months ago i bought an used Sunday modeland that was my first build with frame and fork made for 24,but i felt that was good but something was weird as i felt on the G.O.A.T.,you know..Fgfs bikes are made with a different geometry for a reason and i was riding a 24” bmx with a Fixedgear hub. Now i got picked up by Nemesis Project and i got my first proper 24”FGFS bike and couldnt be happier with it! Hope that together we can develop this bikes and always get them better and better. This bikes are easier to maneuver,to storage,to learn new tricks, wheels are stronger and bikes are lighter. This is a large amount of advantages, sure that you got to know if this bike fit your riding style as they fit mine.

BEFORE NOON MOST OF THE 70 REGISTERED RIDERS SHOWED UP TO GET THERE STARTER KIT WITH GOODIES FROM OUR SUPPORTERS ASS SAVERS, KEIRIN BERLIN, CONTINENTAL. THE FIRST SPECTATORS SET UP THERE CAMPING BL ANKETS CLOSE TO THE COURSE, ONE THING EVERYONE REALLY LOVED ABOUT THE TR ACK: IT WAS POSSIBLE TO OVERSEE THE WHOLE COURSE FROM BASICALLY EVERY SPOT ALONG IT. THE RULES WERE QUITE SIMPLE: SHOW UP WITH YOUR FIXED GEAR BIKE, PUT OFF YOUR BR AKES, AND PUSH YOUR PEDALS AS HARD YOU CAN. EVERY ONE HAD TO GO FOR ONE FAST L AP, STARTING WITH A GAP OF 30 SECONDS. SOON IT WAS CLEAR, THAT VERY TECHNICAL COURSE CHALLENGE SOME STARTERS MORE THAN OTHERS. THE FASTEST TIME GOT FÉLIX LHENRY – FROM THE DIJON MUSTARD CREW – WHO CAME ALL THE WAY FROM FR ANCE. WHILE THE TOP 32 RIDERS WENT DIRECTLY TO THE 1/4 FINALS. 8 RIDERS WHO ARE NOT QUALIFIED GOT THE CHANCE TO WIN A “WILD CARD” FOR THE 1/4 FINALS IN THE “L AST CHANCE R ACE”. BY NOW THE WARM AIR ALONG THE COURSE WAS ALREADY FILLED WITH SHOUT-OUTS AND CHEERING FROM THE CROWD AS IT KINDA WAS THE “LIT TLE FINALE”.
39
NOW THINGS WENT SERIOUS: AT THE END OF EACH L AP OF ALL THE FINALS THE L AST RIDER WAS TAKEN OUT OF THE R ACE. IN MOST OF THE 1/4 FINALS A GROUP 3-5 RIDERS OF WAS ABLE TO CREATE A GAP WITHIN THE FIRST L APS AND MADE IT HARD FOR EVERYONE THAT COULDN’T FOLLOW THE HIGH PACE AT THE VERY BEGINNING – SOMETHING THAT’S QUITE T YPICAL IN MANY CRITERIUM R ACES.
40
BEFORE THE MEN FINALS KICKED IN, IT WAS TIME FOR THE WOMEN’S R ACE. UNFORTUNATELY ONLY THREE CAME TO THE STARTING LINE AT THE END – AS TWO HAD TO L AST-MINUTE-CANCEL THERE AT TENDANCE. IT STILL WAS A INTENSE R ACE WHEN KIM VAN DIJK (SHE36 – GIRLS FIXED GEAR GROUP IN BERLIN), SANDR A THIEL – RSU & MARION DZIWNIK – TEAM STANDERT R ACED THERE L APS. AT THE BEGINNING IN ONE GROUP RIDING,
STOKED ON FIXED BIKES
MARION & SANDR A TOOK OF TOGETHER AT SOME POINT, BEFORE MARION SHOWED HER STRENGTH AND SET AN AT TACK. WITH ALREADY HAVING A GAP IN BETWEEN HER AND SANDR A SHE CR ASHED IN THE HAIR-PIN. SANDR A SHOWED OFF SPORTING-SPIRIT AND SLOWED DOWN AF TER PASSING HER. AF TER GETTING BACK ON THE BIKE MARION SHOWED HER WILL POWER AND FINALLY WON THE R ACE WITH ADVANCE STILL.

EIGHT MEN MADE IT TO THE FINAL. THE PRESSURE WENT UP, NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE PRICES THAT WERE WINNABLE: A WHEEL SET FROM DT SWISS, A CUSTOM 8BAR KRZBERG V5 FOR THE FIRST UNSPONSORED RIDER AND MORE PRICES FROM SELLE SAN MARCO AND ADIDAS CYCLING. TEMPO WAS SET HIGH EARLY AS IN THE R ACES BEFORE AND EVERYONE COULD FEEL THAT THEY ALL HAD SOME ENERGY-SAPPING L APS IN
41
THEIR LEGS. IN THE END PAUL STUBERT FROM THE 8BAR TEAM COULD DISPL AY HIS R ACE EXPERIENCE AND FINISHED THIRD. JOHANNES KILLISPERGER FROM MESS PACK BERLIN AT TACKED FÉLIX LHENRY UNTIL THE VERY END BUT FALL IN THE SECOND L AST CORNER OF THE TR ACK AND MISSED HIS CHANCE TO WIN. LHENRY, WHO ALSO HAS AN OLDER BROTHER R ACING FOR TEAM CINELLI CHROME, DEFINITELY EARNED THE TITLE “L AST ONE STANDING”. MALTE JÖRSS FINISHED 5TH AND WON THE 8BAR KRZBERG FR AME SET AND WILL R ACE FOR THE 8BAR ROOKIE TEAM NEXT SEASON. BY NOW THE SUN SET AND A NICE L ATE-SUMMER DAY WENT TO AN END. AF TER CELEBR ATING THE PODIUM PL ACES FOR US IT WAS NOT TOTALLY OVER YET. WE HEAD OVER TO THE AF TER PART Y WHERE WE HAD TO REWARD THE “VERY L AST ONE STANDING”… FOR EVERYONE IN THE ORGANISATION IT WAS QUITE CLEAR, THAT THERE WILL BE NOT ONLY A NEXT R ACE, BUT ALSO ANOTHER “L AST ONE STANDING” COMPETITION NEXT YEAR. THANKS TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS, SPECTATORS, R ACERS AND SPONSORS FOR PUT TING THIS EVENT TOGETHER!

INTERVIEW
with Matthew Stone SOFB - YOU LIVE IN LONDON HOW DOES THIS INFLUENCE YOU AND YOUR WORK? I’m based in London, moving from a small village in the south of the country a couple of years ago, seeking work in the creative industry. There are so many opportunities to shoot in London as there is always something going on.
SOFB - FIXED GEAR IS GROWING ALL OVER THE WORLD, WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST CONTACT WITH THIS SPORT? I first learned about fixed bikes when at University, there was a Velodrome near campus, after I tried it I was hooked! SOFB LATEST SHOOT? PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT Last big cycling commission was shooting the Red Hook Crit in Greenwich. This was a bit different than the usual cycling photoshoot as I shot the race from within a construction site that the course ran through, based in one of the highrises being built- shooting from an ariel perspective SOFB - YOU RIDE BIKES YOURSELF? IF YES HOW MUCH DOES THIS AFFECT THE WAY YOU LOOK AT THE SPORT THROUGH YOUR LENS? I cycle as much as I can around town. Not so much when working as I always have lots of kit!

An appreciation for bikes does allow me to explore the subject further through the lens, I try and bring something that no one else would shoot. I try to show different perspectives, but when shooting a race it’s not all just on what’s happening on the course there is a lot in the peripheral that often gets dismissed. SOFB - FILM OR DIGITAL? I still shoot film wherever possible, but rarely when shooting sports with thousands of frames, I would get through hundreds of rolls..
SOFB - WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE TIME OF DAYLIGHT TO SHOOT IN? Dusk! I love using natural daylight and how it affects the images with shadows, creating great playful shapes and graphic shapes. SOFB - WHATS IN YOUR BAG, ALL THE GEAR YOU USE FOR PHOTOSHOOTS, HOW HEAVY IS IT? I run with Canon gear, several pro bodies with a mixture of primes, all housed in my Peli 1510 case. I shoot most of my commercial work with a Canon 5D mk3, But if I could only ever shoot with one lens again it would be the 35mm focal length. Its great for how I work because it is slightly wider than 50mm, allowing me to capture more with a short distance, it also allows me to play around with layering with the image allowing each image to tell a part of the story.
Photo: Matthew Stone
49
SOFB - MINIMAL SETUP? Not really, every job I think I can slim kit down but I am always carrying more kit than I need just in case. When I have a to be super quick and low-key I shoot with one body and two lenses, the second on my belt, typically a 35mm and 85mm. SOFB - DREAM LOCATION TO SHOOT THIS YEAR? Anywhere warm!! I have heard the dream light in California would be ace. SOFB - IF YOU COULD GIVE A YOUNGER YOU AN ADVICE ON HIS WAY TO THE FIRST FREELANCE ASSIGNMENT WHAT WOULD YOU TELL HIM? I still consider myself up and coming but what I would say to anyone considering it out of college, you have to be dedicated and have a clear game plan in your head it’s what you want to do and commit to. It’s full on exciting and busy, but also can be quite the opposite if your not prepared to put the time in.

THE EVIL SHRED RIDE AT TR ACTED OVER ONE HUNDRED PEOPLE AND IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE L ARGEST SPFG RIDES EVER, THERE WAS A LOT OF EFFORT PUT INTO EVERYONES COSTUMES AND EVEN A BAKING CONTEST BEFORE THE RIDE STARTED ON THE STEPS OF ST PAUL'S WHICH NOT MANY RIDES CAN BOAST ABOUT. THE ROUTE WAS LEAD BRILLIANTLY BY JOHN MACK AND TOOK US THROUGH NORTH AND EAST LONDON WITH A FEW MORE HILLS THAN PEOPLE WERE EXPECTING, BUT THEY MADE FOR SOME FANTASTIC SCENERY AS A HUNDRED CYCLISTS SLOWLY ASCENDED UP AN EERILY FOGGY HAMPSTEAD HEATH AND SOME VERY SKETCHY DESCENTS OVER DAMP LEAVES AND POT-HOLED PATHWAYS THE RIDE ENDED AT THE CHESHAM ARMS PUB IN HACKNEY WHERE EVERYONE COULD HAVE A DRINK BEFORE THE TR ACK STAND CONTEST AND PRIZE GIVING FOR COSTUMES. AS PREDICTED THE FDJ TEAM DID R ATHER WELL IN THE TR ACK STAND CONTEST; 3RD PL ACE WENT TO HARVEY FROM CYCLE PS CAMBERWELL, 2ND WENT TO LEVI AND KAMAL TOOK 1ST WITH HIS ONE FOOTED TR ACK STANDING SKILLS ADDING TO OUR HISTORY OF PODIUM PL ACES AT STACK STAND CONTESTS, THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME WE HAD TO DO IT WHILST HAVING SWEETS STUFFED IN OUR MOUTHS, NOT WHAT WE’RE COMPL AINING. The Red Bull Fuxjagd took place the second year in a row in Vienna, Austria. There were many international riders including Addison Zawada from the US., who also was the favourite. Addison was third in the qualification run and pushed it really hard up to the final and he won! The atmosphere was great, cool to see a fixed gear event taking place in Vienna.

SOFB - HOW, WHO, WHEN.... DID YOU FOUND-OPEN THE SHOP? ARE YOU FOCUSED ON FIXED GEAR BIKES/PARTS? WE BOTH WORKED AS MECHANICS AT TOKYO FIXED SOHO (R.I.P.) AND THEN KINOKO (R.I.P.) WHEN KINOKO CLOSED WE BOUGHT ALL THE WORKSHOP TOOLS AND A FEW BITS OF STOCK AND STARTED LOOKING FOR A SPACE. WE FOUND THE CROPLEY STREET ADDRESS IN HOXTON, EAST LONDON AND OPENED JULY 27TH 2015. WE HAD A CRAZY LOUD PARTY WITH A FEW BANDS AND FREE BEER... WE HAVE A WIDE VARIETY OF STUFF IN STOCK... A FAIR BIT OF SS/FIXED ORIENTATED PARTS BUT WE'RE ALSO FOCUSSING ON ADVENTURE BIKE / MTB / BIKE PACKING AND TOURING GEAR.
SOFB WHAT MAKES YOUR SHOP UNIQUE IN LONDON? IT'S OWNED AND RUN BY JUST THE TWO OF US. WE'RE BOTH MECHANICS, SO YOU WON'T GET ANY SALES PATTER FROM US. JUST HONEST ADVICE THAT COMES FROM EXPERIENCE. THE WORKSHOP IS AN OPEN SPACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN HANGOUT AND SPEAK TO US DIRECTLY, RATHER THAN THE MAJORITY OF SHOPS WHERE THE WORKSHOP IS HIDDEN AND YOU ONLY SPEAK TO SALES GUYS. ALSO WE HAVE A SKULL TOOL BOARD.
69
SOFB - DOES YOUR PERSONAL PREFERENCE/STYLE INFLUENCE WHAT YOU SELL IN THE SHOP? OF COURSE, WE ONLY WANT TO SELL STUFF THAT WE'D RIDE OURSELVES. WE ALWAYS GET STOKED ON NEW TECHNOLOGY THAT COMES OUT. WE DO A LOT OF RESEARCH AND TESTING, SO WE CAN GET YOU GUYS RIDING THE RAD STUFF TOO.
70

SOFB - WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE WAY FORWARD; BIKE SHOPS SPECIALIZING ON CUSTOM BUILDS OR SWITCHING TO ONLINE RETAIL ONLY? IT IMPOSSIBLE TO COMPETE WITH THE BIG ONLINE RETAILERS, SO WE DON'T TRY. WE FOCUS ALL OUR ATTENTION ON RUNNING A PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOP AND CREATING GOOD SOCIAL VIBE.
IT'S NICE WHEN WE GET PEOPLE IN THAT UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORTING INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES. IT'S REASSURING WHEN THEY ORDER THROUGH US RATHER THAN SAVING £5 BY BUYING ONLINE. BUYING THROUGH INDEPENDENT SHOPS HELPS CUSTOMERS BE SURE THEY'LL BE BUYING THE RIGHT PRODUCT FOR WHAT THEY NEED.
71
SOFB - WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE OF FIXED GEAR I CANT REALLY SEE ANY DEVELOPMENT IN THE TECHNOLOGY OF COMPONENTS, AS A FIXED GEAR ITS SUCH A SIMPLE SET UP. I IMAGINE THERE'LL BE MORE CARBON COMPONENTS COMING TO MARKET AND MORE PEOPLE RUNNING WIDER MTB STYLE BARS FOR BETTER CONTROL WHILST RIDING THE CITY STREETS. THERE'LL ALWAYS A SOLID GROUP OF KIDS WHO HAVE FUN WITH IT AND START CREWS, UNTIL THEIR KNEES GIVE OUT AND THEY START RIDING GEARED BIKES. SAYING THAT THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A NEW GENERATION TO TAKE OVER.
72
SOFB - DO YOU HAVE ANY SECRET / SPECIAL PROJECTS FOR THE NEAR FUTURE? WE'VE GOT LOADS OF IDEAS FOR FUN RIDES AND RAD MERCHANDISE THAT WE WANT TO MAKE. WE'RE THINKING ABOUT SUNDAY SCAVENGER HUNTS FOR WINTER, MAINLY FUELLED BY SEARCHING FOR WHISKEY TO KEEP THE BLOOD WARM. WE'VE ALSO STARTED PLANNING SOME POP-UP TATTOO DAYS IN STORE, WITH GUEST ARTISTS DOING A DAY OF FLASH AND POSSIBLY NEW TSHIRT DESIGNS WITH EACH ARTIST... WATCH THIS SPACE... IF WE TOLD YOU THE SECRET SHIT IT WOULDN'T BE SECRET ANYMORE...

WE WERE FORMED IN 2015 SOMEWHAT ACCIDENTALLY BY AN ALREADY TIGHT FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE WHO WERE MEMBERS OF OTHER CYCLING GROUPS AND WHO MET IN SOME PART THROUGH CYCLE PS IN BAT TERSEA IN THE WAKE OF RED HOOK CRIT LONDON. WE’RE A CORE GROUP OF 12 BUT OUR EXTENDED FAMILY GROWS DAILY AND WE’LL WELCOME ANYONE WHO ISN’T AN ASSHOLE. EACH OF US ALREADY PARTICIPATED IN RIDES AND R ACES IN VARIOUS DISCIPLINES AT DIFFERING ABILIT Y LEVELS BUT WHAT WE REALLY WANTED TO DO WAS RIDE AND COMPETE TOGETHER WITHOUT THE VARIOUS RESTR AINTS AND LIMITATIONS OFFERED BY BEING A MEMBER OF SOME OTHER TEAMS IN LONDON.

Welcome to Bombtra Photos: Jason Sellers and Mauro Tittoto Interview by Matt Gutierrez
Stefan “Fish” Vis - For the fixed criterium season 2016 he will be riding a critbike of BombtrackBicycle Co.!
Bombtrack offered you the chance to create an additional critbike with an alternative for the market when it comes to a different riding style and personal favours. What can we expect 2017? “I am feeling very home at Bombtrack since they have the same strong faible for steel as I do. We both share the opinion that steel is the past, part of the present and aswell a strong part of the future when it comes to bicycle frames. Steel tubing factories did not sit still during the last decades and in the meanwhile they offer tubing to make frames almost as light, stiff and especially more durable that carbon - or any other material like especially alloy that probably will – with the general development and price-decrease of carbon - disappear from the frame market within the next 10 years anyway. Also steel offers certain riding characteristics that you won’t find with any different material. And in my opinion riding steel brings some important advantages along, and it is not only comfort.”

One of the deciding reasons riding for Bombtrack Bicycle Co. was to bring back the opportunity to get all his longtime sponsors back on board.Right? “Bombtrack Bicycle Co. definitly earn the spot as my main sponsor. But I have always enjoyed a massive support from dutch wheelmaker Fast Forward whose wheels I personally consider as one of the best on the global market and which I could not ride at last year’s RHC due to the team obligation. Another very important sponsor is Wattbike as they provide a needed indoor training facility and even sport medical care. They are pretty much responsible for the results I could book in the past at every Red Hook Crit. Also San Marco and their clothing line Urban Performance make sure I look good and sit well, Kmc chains ensures a constant chain replacement, so the bikes don’t need new chainrings and cogs every year; Challenge tires from Italy supports with all types of tires and tubulars, Giro currently supports with helmets and shoes, Grip grab supports with plane tickets from time to time and of course all the stuff that keeps me warm during all year long riding. In addition to all those sponsors and supporters my Mom sponsors me with a lot of food during hard times!” -----We wish him all the best! Bring on 2016! 97
