We Value Every Contribution We say it all the time, and we mean every word. At the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, our donors are the difference! We value every community contribution. Whether it be time, treasure, or talent, each generous act of giving has a life-changing, positive impact on the most critically sick and injured children and their families. With your continued support, we are making a meaningful difference in the hundreds of communities across Western Canada directly impacted by the Stollery Children’s Hospital, the Foundation, and our many community partners. Together, we are unlocking the potential that exists in every child by ensuring the Stollery continues to provide infants and children with some of the safest and most specialized family centred pediatric care in North America. We are pleased to share with you our Report to the Community. In it, we introduce you to many people in our community who help us be better and, in turn, improve and strengthen our communities for generations to come. We are lucky to have some of the best supporters at our side: donors, volunteers, parents, children, government, hospital specialists, and support staff who all do their part in keeping the Stollery world-class. One of the biggest challenges facing a hospital within a hospital is ongoing space constraints. As Alberta’s population continues to grow, so does the demand for critical care services and the need for additional space. While this past year has seen significant achievement in ambulatory clinic and operating room expansion projects at the Stollery, the opportunity exists for the Foundation and its supporters to continue with capital redevelopment. The Foundation and its Board of Trustees truly appreciate all you do in supporting the Stollery, and we want to thank you for your direct impact on excellence at this wonderful hospital. We are excited about the future and the possibilities that lie ahead, and we are confident that with your continued investment in children’s health, the Stollery Children’s Hospital can exceed its potential. Sincerely,
Zahra Somani, BEd, MBA Mike House, MBA, CFRE Chair President and CEO Board of Trustees Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation 3
What’s the difference between good and great? Between a hospital that’s got everything you can imagine, and one that’s got equipment, programs, and doctors with expertise that you didn’t even know existed? The difference is our donors. The donors in our community, with their generous hearts and passionate minds, care about living in a city where children are its priority. These charitable souls choose, at every opportunity, to create a better world. They do it for their children, their friends, and their community. And they do it for every generation that comes after. It’s their selfless choice that makes all the difference in the world. At the Foundation, we’re excited about creating a movement that celebrates the generosity that is inherent in these souls. We want to give them the thanks they deserve, tell them what an impact they’ve made, and get them ready for all the incredible things that will come as a result of their generosity.

How Your Dollars Make an Impact The Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation has one main goal: To enhance excellence at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. We do that by channelling our support into five pillars, which we call our Pillars of Excellence. Through this strategic support structure, our donors can be confident that their generous donations are going to the areas of the hospital that will benefit the most from their support.

The journey of the complex child toward optimum health
Solving the Most Complex Medical Challenges The body is incredibly complex. As miraculous and amazing as the systems that give us life are, so too are they challenging and puzzling when something is out of alignment. At the Foundation, we fund equipment and research that helps the specialists at the Stollery treat the sickest of the sick, with the most complex of illnesses.
The Stork Heidi Haring knows all about complexity. As a neonatal transport nurse, she’s spent the last 14 years on her toes, never knowing what challenges the next crisis will bring. At times, it includes a drive across Edmonton, but sometimes it will send her on a helicopter ride to remote locations as far away as the Yukon.
8
The Stollery’s neonatal transport team acts as a doctor’s eyes and ears while a patient is en route to the hospital, so having the right equipment to care for these newborns is especially important. This past year, your donor dollars provided the Stollery’s biomedical team with the necessary funding to develop special incubators nicknamed “the Stork.”

These incubators are specially designed for northern transport, with double-walled Plexiglas® to stay warmer in cold weather, a cover to keep the heat in, and the ability to add humidity for temperature regulation. Your generous donations make a real difference in the health of our sickest patients. Since the transport team has begun using “the Stork,” more babies are surviving their trip to the Stollery.

Innovation and discovery
Supporting Research That Changes Lives Through funding to organizations like the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI), we’re supporting research backed by evidence-based practice which directly effects the young patients at the Stollery.
Breathe Easier Dr. Georg Schmölzer is a neonatologist, researcher, and associate director of the Stollery’s neonatal research unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH). Through his research, he’s saving the lives of Alberta’s pre-term babies. There are 15 million newborns born prematurely each year, and 20 per cent of them require support at birth. One million of these babies die due to birth asphyxia. In Alberta, we have the highest rate of pre-term birth in the country, with one in 10 babies arriving before its full gestation age. Through your support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, and the annual funding we provide to WCHRI, we were able to bolster Dr. Schmölzer’s research team by funding one of his summer students.
10
As part of a recent study on a new resuscitation technique, Dr. Schmölzer and his team reduced the time it takes for a newborn’s heart to respond, from 200 seconds down to 30. This is critical to restoring blood circulation to all vital organs, and particularly the brain. “It’s exciting!” says Dr. Schmölzer. “Using what we have learned in the lab, we can give the baby the best chance for life.”

Family centred care
Embracing the Healing Touch of a Loving Parent Through funding to the Family Centred Care Council, we’re helping create programs and positions that fully integrate the family into every child’s care. Programs that place parents on the hiring boards, in doctor and nurse training sessions, and in design groups that help the hospital build functional, family-friendly spaces.
When Elizabeth Stolte enters a patient’s room, she’s there to help them heal, although her tools are much different from the stethoscopes and syringes that a doctor or nurse may bring. Elizabeth is a music therapist at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, and she uses an array of instruments, from her guitar to an iPad, to engage with the comforting sounds and universal language of music. “Music therapists aren’t there to perform—we’re there to engage and involve people,” Elizabeth says. “It’s not an entertainment service, it’s a therapeutic one.” First and foremost, Elizabeth’s job is to find the best way to use music to help a patient. She considers many factors, including the patient’s health, age, musical tastes, and whether siblings or parents want to be involved. It’s the inclusive family perspective of the music therapy that makes it an ideal program for the Stollery’s ever-growing Family Centred Care program. Since 2012, Devon Canada has donated $50,000 to the music program. This is just one of the important ways that the contributions of our donor base make a substantial impact at the Stollery.

The Right People Can Make All the Difference The people behind the equipment and the research at the Stollery Children’s Hospital make a huge difference to every patient or family member who walks through its halls. Donations to the Foundation fund programs and fellowships designed to attract the world’s brightest medical minds in pediatric cardiac surgery, organ transplantation, and neurosciences.
Even as a six-year-old boy in South Africa, Dr. Paul Kantor knew his career would be in cardiology. Today he heads the Stollery’s heart program. In 1967, as an impressionable six-year-old with a keen interest in biology and all things medical, Paul Kantor sat riveted to the telly watching coverage of a historical event that shocked and amazed the world—fellow South African Christiaan Barnard had performed the first-ever human-to-human heart transplant. Three years later, he devoured One Life, the surgeon’s bestselling autobiography and set his mind on following his fascination with the heart. After an impressive career that saw Dr. Kantor travel to New York, B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, and Sick Kids in Toronto, he’s now settled 14
in Edmonton to help the Stollery build up its heart program. One of his first initiatives was to launch the Cardiomyopathy and Heart Function (CHF) service. His goal is to turn heart failure into heart recovery. Where he once saw only helplessness, today Dr. Kantor sees hope. “I choose to focus on heart function because I never again want to tell a parent that there’s nothing more we can do,” he explains. “I want to stop wondering, ‘Couldn’t we possibly have done something better?’ Now my conviction is, we can.” Those days are still ahead, Dr. Kantor admits, but just give him a bit more time. Every day brings him closer to his goal.

Quality outcomes, quality care
Patient Safety Is Our Highest Priority Quality assurance and patient-safety programs ensure children and families at the Stollery Children’s Hospital experience better outcomes and care during their stay. The Foundation funds programs that oversee quality assurance and patient safety programs in all corners of the hospital.
Treatment buys babies time, and gives parents peace of mind. Despite modern medical advancement, neonatal deaths still occur. Thankfully, in the majority of cases, parents immediately hear their newborn’s first cry, but there is no guarantee. Fifteen years ago, the Stollery took part in a study that led to new treatments that mitigate long-term problems and save precious lives. This has allowed more parents to hear their child’s cries—and laughter. One of the biggest concerns is birth asphyxia, a lack of blood flow to the brain. No blood flow means no oxygen, which means that even if the baby survives, the lifelong effects could be drastic. The solution, or closest thing to one, is surprisingly simple, albeit initially startling to hear: keep the baby cool—as in hypothermic— for three days. “It has been observed that, when hypothermia happens accidentally, like with a near drowning in icy water, the brain suffers noticeably less damage than in warm water,” says Barb Kamstra, a registered nurse working in research and clinical support in the Stollery’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). But observations aside, it can be a tough sell. “Telling parents you’re going to cool their baby by four degrees for 72 hours, with no feeding and no holding or cuddling them—it feels like a lifetime.” The procedure itself is straightforward. A total body cooling blanket is used that allows cool water to flow through tubes within a rubber blanket, and a thermometer continuously monitors and adjusts the water temperature, ensuring the $30,000 machine maintains the baby’s temperature at a constant 33.5°C. “It’s not a cure,” adds Barb. “Some receive cooling and still have disabilities. But they have fewer than those not offered cooling, and more survive.”

Everything we do in the hospital starts in the community. 18
The money we raise for the Stollery Children’s Hospital doesn’t come out of thin air. It comes from our hard-working, generous donors. To create the kind of memorable opportunities for generosity that our donors deserve, it takes the tireless work of both our team and our incredible team of community volunteers. This past year, we had the good fortune to enjoy some amazing events with many of our closest friends and partners.
