A message from our CEO and board chairs

Kids and teens in northern Alberta deserve the best pediatric health care available. Thanks to our generous donors, the Stollery Children’s Hospital is there when it matters most.

Our donors are the reason the Stollery continues to deliver specialities and sub-specialties not available anywhere else. Recently, a family from Halifax travelled to Edmonton because the urgent care their child needed exists at the Stollery thanks to ongoing investments by our growing donor community.

When you give to children’s health, you’re not just helping today, you’re investing in tomorrow. You’re an active part of our vision to transform children’s health – both physical and mental – so that all kids have the chance to live a long and healthy life.

Thank you for taking the time to read our Report to the Community. In its pages, you’ll learn exactly where your money goes, how donations elevate family-centred care programs and services, why keeping this world-class level of care in your backyard is leading to better outcomes for kids and teens, and more about our exciting plans to build a new, standalone Stollery for future generations.

We’re grateful to our many community and government partners for continuing to make children’s health a priority. We’re especially fortunate to have supporters like you who make life-saving change possible, not only within the Stollery but throughout Alberta and right across Canada.

Sincerely,

Our mission and vision

We work to give all kids the best chance to live a long and healthy life.

• We raise money in support of advancing specialized children’s physical and mental health care

• We thank our donors by sharing with them the impact of their gifts on the lives of Stollery kids and their families from backyards across Alberta and beyond

• We educate communities about the Hospital and children’s physical and mental health needs

• We advocate for children’s health becoming a greater priority for government, stakeholders and the community

Honouring Bob and Shirley Stollery’s cornerstone values used to establish the Foundation, along with the shared values of our staff, we maintain six core values:

• Accountability — to the internal team and to external stakeholders

• Energy — for the passion of our cause and the amount of effort put forward

• Respect — for the children, families, donors and Foundation team

• Inclusiveness — in our approach to the philosophy that no child goes without excellent care

• Altruism — in the giving of oneself, sharing and a sense of abundance

• Leadership — by all regardless of position and demonstrated to every stakeholder

We respectfully acknowledge that our Foundation and the Hospital we serve are located on the traditional lands of Treaty 6 Territory and within the Métis homelands and Métis Nation of Alberta Region 4. We are grateful to the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples whose footsteps have marked these lands for generations, whose histories, languages and cultures continue to influence and are vital to our vibrant community. We recognize the land as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on.

Of the more than 170,000 charities and non-profits in Canada, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation is in an elite group of 275 charities accredited by Imagine Canada. This designation confirms our commitment to the highest standards of accountability, transparency and governance.

Thank you to our 2023-24 board members

YOUR DONATIONS IN ACTION: EQUIPMENT AND INFRASTRUCTURE AT THE STOLLERY

With your support, the Stollery can update and expand spaces like the newly renovated Simply Supper’s Lemon Love Family Room, which now has more space for families to take a break, eat a meal together, connect or access resources, and for kids to engage in play, craft or enjoy the sensory light features. Additionally, new equipment purchases thanks to donors like you are helping families feel more prepared and comfortable. At-home ventilators have made it possible for kids to get home sooner, allowing the Stollery to continue to be the most specialized children’s hospital in Western Canada. pieces of equipment purchased last year!

Improving Stollery care for the whole family

Kids with gastrointestinal (GI) tract and/or liver conditions can have a more positive, less invasive Hospital experience thanks to you!

Each year, generous community members make it possible for the Foundation to purchase much-needed specialized pediatric equipment, such as the RS85 Prestige point-of-care ultrasound machine which helps gastroenterologists diagnose and monitor many liver and inflammatory bowel diseases.

The diagnosis and monitoring of many GI conditions typically requires patients to have a scope, an uncomfortable and invasive procedure that takes several days to prepare for. A scope involves many health-care professionals and requires general anesthesia, which can be traumatic and more invasive for the child. The point-of-care ultrasound machine at the Stollery gastroenterology clinic reduces the need for scopes in kids, while also reducing wait times for families who get to see and hear results in real time from their doctor without leaving the examination room. This also leaves room for practitioners to have more patient visits per day and reduce wait times.

• 163 scans performed last year

• Eliminating the need for:

• 30-40 colonoscopies

• 50-60 MRIs

• More than 20 patients experiencing a flare-up avoided needing a scope or an MRI

• 10 patients diagnosed with ulcerative colitis without the use of an MRI

An Enchanted and accessible day at The Beach

Imagine a space where a kid can experience an MRI machine for the first time in an area designed for play. A space where a kid in a wheelchair or with an IV pole can enjoy a playground during their hospital stay. A space where sick kids can connect with each other and feel less alone in their experience. A space where a palliative kid can be granted their last wish to go outside. Imagine a space where kids can be kids, even when they’re in the Hospital.

Thanks to donors, the Saville Family Beach is now a bigger, better play space where all of this – and more – is possible.

Three years ago, we set out to raise $5 million to fully renovate and expand The Beach play area. This space is a vital part of a child’s and family’s journey at the Stollery Children’s Hospital with therapeutic play programming led by the Child Life team. Now open, this impactful upgrade includes construction of an attached, state-of-the-art, outdoor play area, the Enchanted Forest, that more than doubles the previous 1,500 square foot play space.

The Saville Family Beach indoor space includes the Ben Stelter Medical Play Area designed to help kids and their families understand what to expect before a minor procedure or a major surgery. It’s equipped with a play MRI machine, which lets kids get familiar with an often-intimidating piece of equipment before they experience it in a medical setting. The indoor area also includes a the Raching for a Cure Kitchen, used for cooking and baking sessions, a sensory table, games such as air hockey and more.

Guests are transported through the Edmonton Civic Employees Charitable Assistance Fund Submarine into the magic that lies within the Enchanted Forest — the first-ever outdoor dedicated Stollery play space for kids of all ages that can be used year-round. It features a large, fully accessible play structure, a teepee, musical instruments, a large projection wall for outdoor movie nights, Ray and Leona’s Puppy Corner for pet therapy and much more. Being outdoors and exposed to fresh air are essential to the children’s healing – physically, mentally and emotionally.

Thanks to you, the Saville Family Beach and the Enchanted Forest will make essential therapeutic programming more accessible to Stollery patients.

Child Life Services

A medical appointment, procedure or hospital stay can be a stressful event for people of all ages. Luckily for Stollery kids and their families, the Foundation-funded Child Life department at the Stollery helps kids adjust to and understand hospitalization, treatment and illness — all while making sure kids still get to be kids.

The Beach is somewhere fun, where Stollery kids can go when they’re in the Hospital!

Bringing cutting-edge equipment to the OR

We asked for your support to purchase a CATSmart Continuous Autotransfusion System for patients at the Stollery, and you made it happen.

The CATSmart is a cutting-edge blood transfusion system that collects the patient’s own blood that is shed during surgery, cleans it and then returns it back into the patient’s body. Essentially, it recycles a patient’s blood rather than using a blood transfusion from someone else. Not only does this free up more units of blood for others who require transfusions, but it also decreases the chances of adverse blood transfusion reactions. In addition, it’s a more inexpensive way of providing blood products to patients than utilizing the blood bank.

The Stollery’s surgery and operative services team uses the CATSmart Continuous Autotransfusion Systemthis approximately 8-10 times per month. It’s an instrumental piece of equipment that is both cost-effective and efficient, used primarily in cases of spinal surgeries and occasionally in hip reconstruction and multiple-trauma situations.

Last year, CATSmart helped as many as 120 Stollery patients.

Stollery care at the click of a mouse

Imagine your child needs hundreds of checkups each year, but they’re too sick to go inside the hospital for appointments.

That’s the reality for Amanda and her daughter, Amber.

“In 2023, Amber had 154 appointments,” says Amanda. “When virtual health at the Stollery became a necessity, we were incredibly grateful that this service was available.”

Amber has faced many challenges in her young life. Stomach pain, persistent viruses and subluxation or partial dislocation of her joints and organs within her body. In 2019, Stollery doctors diagnosed Amber with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which led to other serious diagnoses in the years to follow. Viruses are particularly unsafe given Amber’s weakened condition, so Amanda says they rely on virtual care as often as possible.

“We had at least three-to-four virtual appointments a month for the first year or so, and now we do a mixture of in-person and virtual. Amber’s

neurologist, gastroenterologist, chronic pain team, pediatrician, gynecologist, psychologist, and in some cases, physio, are all able to stay in contact without the need for us to venture inside the Stollery unless absolutely necessary.”

Studies show that kids recover quicker, both physically and emotionally, when they’re close to home. Virtual health services are also becoming more vital in today’s world. They provide a lifeline to those who are isolated or living in underserved areas, and the Stollery wants to be at the forefront of that change.

With donor support, we’re raising $3 million over five years toward the Stollery Centre for Virtual Health to expand virtual health care at the Stollery and forever change how urgent, expert Stollery care is delivered in our province and beyond.

“Each day has its struggles for Amber,” adds Amanda. “Having the Stollery in our own backyard brings my family great comfort knowing the level of care she gets is some of the best anywhere in the world.”

A Stollery family room filled with lemon love

Following the completion of exciting renovations and enhancements, Simply Supper’s Lemon Love Family Room is officially open!

Since 2014, Simply Supper’s Junior Lemon Squeezers have spread the lemon love by hosting lemonade stands, rallying their communities and raising funds in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. Each year, hundreds of lemonade stands are hosted across Alberta by kids committed to helping kids just like them.

In 2021, Simply Supper dedicated their Lemonade Stand Day fundraising to renovating and enhancing the family room within the Walter C. Mackenzie Stollery site. In recognition of Lemonade Stand Day reaching more than $1 million raised for the Hospital, the space has been officially named in honour of the event.

“It’s so exciting for us after 10 years and going into our 11th year of Lemonade Stand Day to finally have a permanent mark,” says Monita Chapman, owner of Simply Supper and founder of Lemonade Stand Day. “All of our junior lemon squeezers – as they come through the Hospital – get to see their hard work.”

Simply Supper’s Lemon Love Family Room is a fully accessible and inclusive space for Stollery families featuring:

• A modern design and comfortable furnishings

• A kitchen with dining table for families to share a meal, take breaks from the bedside and spend quality time together

• Child-friendly amenities including a play area, aquarium and sensory light features

• Wheelchair-accessible computer stations for personal and family tasks

• Access to comfort and hygiene items as well as snacks and refreshments

• Dedicated patient and family-centred care staff available to help provide resources

• And more!

“We have very knowledgeable staff that will sit in here seven days a week to provide connections to patient and family-centred care resources,” says Kristin Wong, lead for patient and family-centred care at the Stollery. “In addition, families find connection with each other. I think that’s what we hope to see the most with this new layout and this new space – an opportunity for two families to sit in a kitchen together and talk about their journey, share some of the challenges that they have been facing and realize that they’re not alone.”

Thank you to Simply Supper, the junior planning committee and kids across Alberta for making this possible.

YOUR DONATIONS IN ACTION: INNOVATION AND DISCOVERY

The Stollery is part of Children’s Healthcare Canada, making sure the safest and highest level of care is delivered to Stollery kids across Western Canada. With your support, the Stollery has capacity to ensure systems and processes at the Hospital are both efficient and transparent. From 2022 through 2023, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation collected donations on behalf of the Ben Stelter Fund, and subsequently granted those funds to the Ben Stelter Foundation, to further support innovation and discovery for kids facing a cancer diagnosis.

GRANT FUNDING: INNOVATION AND DISCOVERY AT THE STOLLERY

There’s no place like home

Your donations have funded and grown the Neonatal Home Support Team (NHST) for the past five years, leading to significantly improved outcomes for pre-term infants and allowing them to stay where they thrive the best – at home with their families.

The NHST program was originally funded by the Foundation in 2019 as a pilot project when gaps in care were discovered after pre-term babies were discharged from Stollery neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Before the NHST program, parents and caregivers often had to navigate the transition from the NICU to home and the subsequent months before their initial follow-up appointment on their own.

The pilot phase of the program focused on supporting babies born extremely prematurely who faced challenges with feeding, weight gain, development and were at higher risk for readmission to hospital. Follow-ups for the infants in the program were promising, resulting in lower readmission rates, better outcomes in babies neurodevelopment and enthusiastic feedback from caregivers. With these successes and further positive outcomes, the NHST team has been continuously expanded year over year with Foundation funding.

Foundation funding has also provided support to purchase equipment to implement a pilot project focused on providing phototherapy in the home for low-risk babies with jaundice.

Over the past five years, the NHST program has grown to a team of five registered nurses serving patients seven days a week in the Edmonton area and beyond through in-person and virtual care.

The expansion of the team has not only led to better outcomes for pre-term infants but has also allowed for babies to be sent home from the Hospital earlier than was previously possible. More funding for staff has meant that the team can now support babies who require short-term feeding support, blood pressure monitoring, specialty skin or wound care as well as lab specimen sampling right in their homes.

As of this year, the NHST team has provided a new standard of care for 1,020 pre-term Stollery infants.

YOUR DONATIONS IN ACTION: PROFESSIONAL TRAINING FOR

STOLLERY STAFF

The Stollery is one of the top-three most specialized children’s hospitals in Canada – meaning it has the talent and tools to treat the most complex cases. With your support, we’re directly impacting care at the Stollery! Because of you, Stollery staff can further advance their skills through conferences, programs and training, helping to improve patient outcomes.

GRANT FUNDING: PROFESSIONAL TRAINING FOR STOLLERY STAFF

Investing in knowledge

Through your generosity, we’re supporting excellence in all three Stollery neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) sites by inviting expert Stollery NICU nurses to pursue further education at the University of Alberta to become neonatal nurse practitioners.

Neonatal nurse practitioners are advanced practice nurses specializing in newborn care. They work in collaboration with neonatologists and pediatricians in NICUs and can assess, diagnose, order diagnostic tests, lead resuscitations, perform many procedures, prescribe medication and much more.

Experienced NICU nurses who are employees of the Stollery can apply for funding. Successful applicants commit to providing at least two years of service at the Stollery. Since 2018, nine nurses have successfully graduated from the program and are working in a Stollery NICU today. On average, there are three to five program applicants each year, with one applicant taking advantage of the program last year.

The Stollery has the largest neonatal nurse practitioner team in Canada providing expert clinical care to fragile NICU patients and their families.

YOUR DONATIONS IN ACTION: WOMEN AND CHILDREN’S HEALTH

Thank you to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation for your dedication and continued support for building a better tomorrow for children’s health, today.

From incompatible to compatible

with Dr. Lori West

Dr. Lori West is one of Canada’s leading transplantation researchers and a clinician-scientist, pediatric transplant cardiologist and basic science transplant immunologist at the University of Alberta. As a pioneering heart transplant expert, Dr. West’s breakthrough research in the 1990s revolutionized organ transplants for infants, leading to further investigation of ABO blood group incompatibility in organ transplant patients.

Her expertise in the science of transplants has led her to various additional research projects, including one of the current research projects of her laboratory group: creation of a more sophisticated laboratory assay to measure ABO antibodies. While infants who do not yet have antibodies in place can benefit from ABO-mismatched organ transplants, there’s still more work to be done when exploring these types of transplants.

Currently, ABO-incompatible transplants require patients to have aggressive immunosuppressants following the transplant – often more aggressive than those used for ABO-compatible transplant patients. This is partly because the risks for ABO-incompatible transplant recipients are not as well understood. The current hemagglutination test used to measure ABO antibodies is still quite rudimentary – it doesn’t

Supplied by the University of Alberta

give medical teams enough information to know for certain how high the antibody levels are, what types of antibodies are present or whether the antibodies have been completely removed.

Thanks to funding received from WCHRI and the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, Dr. West’s team is well on their way to launching the new diagnostic assay they have created. The goal is to get this test into the hands of worldwide transplant labs to help improve the care that transplant patients need and to address inequities in access to transplants. With availability of this new tool, new knowledge will continue to be generated leading to further research on the ABO system in health and disease, including COVID.

“Having WCHRI and having the Foundation as a stable source, a partner that we can rely on year after year to support us … has meant that we have been able to continue to move forward even during the lean times when it is harder and harder to get funding,” says Dr. West. “It’s a huge part of what makes us able to expand and follow new pathways that research leads to, which is especially important for our work related to women’s and children’s health.”

The research behind consistent and childappropriate testing for asthma

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children, affecting nearly 850,000 Canadian children under the age of 14. Thanks to research supported by the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation through WCHRI, researchers are exploring ways to more accurately diagnose asthma in children.

One medical test doctors use to diagnose asthma is called a bronchoprovocation test. The test involves a child breathing in a mist or spray from a nebulizer that contains a small amount of an agent called methacholine. The way a child’s breathing responds to the methacholine helps doctors decide whether or not they have asthma.

“The trouble is that different nebulizers vary in terms of how much medication they can transport to the lungs and different laboratories use different nebulizers”, says Andrew Martin, director of the University of Alberta’s Aerosol Research Laboratory of Alberta.

This can make it hard for doctors to interpret test results across labs, but it also puts children at risk of adverse reactions – like fainting and chest pain – if they receive too much methacholine. On top of that, misdiagnoses could be occurring as a result of nebulizers administering either too much or too little methacholine.

Like most medical devices, nebulizers are typically designed for adults, not children.

With funding from a WCHRI Innovation Grant, Martin and his team developed computer models that predict how much medication is deposited into the lungs when using specific nebulizers. Furthermore, Martin’s graduate student, Kineshta Pillay, is focusing on inhaled drug delivery for children and is creating a computational model that incorporates physiological differences related to child development.

Finding ways to know the amount of medication administered and understanding how physiological differences in children can affect the outcome of tests is an important step towards both lowering the rates of misdiagnoses in healthy children and reducing the rates of untreated asthma in those who need care.

“Children aren’t miniature adults,” says Pillay, noting that how well medications reach the lungs is impacted by a child’s age and development.“For instance, children have a smaller and shorter airway and faster breathing rate than adults.”

Stollery Science Lab

In 2018*, we committed $5 million over five years to launch the Stollery Science Lab Distinguished Researcher program in partnership with the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute and the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

Our seven Distinguished Researchers are experts in their fields who are taking their children’s health projects to the next level. They were chosen from 34 applicants, whose proposals were reviewed by our partners, families and patients.

Thanks to donors like you, we’re able to celebrate the following successes with our Distinguished Researchers:

Todd Alexander’s team has made significant progress in discovering new genes that cause pediatric kidney disease; including identifying a gene mutation that causes hypophosphatemia rickets.

Lisa Hartling and Shannon Scott have developed five new knowledge translation products used by parents of Stollery kids. They’re also improving the accessibility of their tools by adapting them for different linguistic and cultural groups.

Michael Hawkes’ team has installed 20 solar-powered oxygen systems in Uganda, Tanzania and Somalia. These systems deliver medicalgrade oxygen around the clock by combining solar panels, batteries and oxygen concentrators.

* Extensions were offered due to COVID-19 to support the unique and exceptional circumstances experienced by our academics during the global pandemic.

Andrew Mackie has leveraged his Stollery Science Lab outcomes to receive additional funding of nearly $600,000 – leading to national leadership in the cardiac space. These funds have also furthered research in helping youth navigate transitions from pediatric to adult care and developed an Indigenous Patient Navigator program for Indigenous youth living in Maskwacis, Alberta.

Kate Storey’s work supported the sustainable expansion of the Indigenous Youth Mentorship Program, a peer-led afterschool program delivered by high school youth to their elementary school peers. Her team has also developed national partnerships to support “rippling” the program across Canada.

Lonnie Zwaigenbaum has moved his team’s early detection and intervention of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research to include infants at risk in the community. This has included implementing a questionnaire to support community pediatricians in early detection and diagnosis and advancing his Social ABCs model — a parent-mediated intervention for toddlers with suspected or confirmed ASD.

Specialized care requires specialized training, and thanks to donors, the Foundation-funded fellow from Uganda who completed their fellowship in nephrology, can take expert knowledge and training back to their home country, being a leader in clinical care.

Thank you from the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry

Clinical fellows play a vital role in the health care of the youngest and most vulnerable in our communities. Thanks to the support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation’s community of donors, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has been empowered to broaden the scope of our clinical fellowships — especially in acute-care areas — making an immediate, positive impact on patients’ lives while deepening educational opportunities in specialized areas.

FELLOW PROFILE

In 2022, Annick Berard completed her residency in anesthesia at McGill University in Montreal. Looking to further her education, she applied and was accepted to the University of Alberta’s pediatric anesthesia fellowship in January 2023. Annick is once again furthering her education with a subspecialty in pediatric cardiac anesthesia, hoping to add this specialty to her practice in the future.

“You have allowed me to come to one of the best pediatric hospitals. I have enjoyed learning from the Stollery team and exploring Edmonton, Alberta and all that it has to offer.”

YOUR DONATIONS IN ACTION: MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

With your support, the Stollery has expanded its outpatient psychiatry clinic. This has increased the capacity for outpatient and phone consultations, allowing kids and their families the comfort of receiving mental health support in their community instead of a hospital setting. For the Stollery, this means fewer emergency room visits for recurring issues and more capacity for immediate emergencies.

Because of you, a multidisciplinary mental health team is now integrated into the Stollery’s emergency department, including licensed practical nurses, social workers, a registered psychiatric nurse, mental health therapist, clinical nurse educators, psychologists and therapists. Together, they provide immediate care necessary and redirect patients toward non-emergency services as appropriate.

GRANT FUNDING: MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

Thank you from the mental health team at the Stollery

On behalf of the children, youth and families that have received addiction and mental health services from the Stollery Children’s Hospital – thank you. The generosity of donors and the support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation have made a tremendous and lasting impact on our health-care system.

With your support, we have been able to expand and enhance mental health services in an unprecedented way. We can offer more timely access to psychiatry and mental health resources and have been able to expand our work and collaboration with our medicine partners. Increasing the knowledge and awareness of mental health and wellness in the broader health-care system means our children and youth can receive comprehensive care for physical and mental health needs in one place at one time.

Making strides in kids’ mental health

LEARN

MORE ABOUT OUR COMMITMENT TO KIDS’ MENTAL HEALTH

When Stollery kid Brenna first visited the Stollery Children’s Hospital in a mental health crisis, she was put on a waiting list and sent home. This was the unfortunate reality for many mental health patients like her before a Foundation fundraising campaign stepped in to make mental health care more accessible for children and adolescents in need.

“When I came to the Stollery, I was going through a really difficult mental health time. My mom decided that it was beyond her arms to be able to give me support.”

Following her family’s initial experience at the Stollery Emergency, Brenna’s mom wrote a letter titled “I Wish My Daughter Had Broken Her Leg,” speaking to the apparent availability of resources for physical health in contrast with the absence of care her family experienced during a mental health crisis.

To help close some of these gaps that exist when it comes to accessing vital child and adolescent mental health care, the Foundation launched a five-year, $6.5 million fundraising campaign to bring integrated, clinical mental health services to the Stollery Emergency. Now in its fourth year, the campaign has made significant strides.

Thanks to donor funding, the Stollery has been able to hire dedicated staff trained in child and adolescent mental health. This includes additional social workers who have allowed the team to extend hours of service and follow families through their health-care journey; a dedicated family counselor to talk to parents and offer support, while also easing the burden on nursing staff; two Clinical Nurse Educators who provide mental health orientations; and ongoing training to staff in the Stollery Emergency Department.

“With the continued funding and support from the Foundation, we hope that we’re going to have continued integration of health care that is inclusive of mental health services and physical services,” says Tracy Palmquist, director of children, youth and families for addiction and mental health at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. “If you walk in the door, you get it all where you need it.”

I am definitely in a way better place. I know I have the supports I can reach out to.

We support a new Stollery

We’re one step closer to a new Stollery

Did you know Alberta is the fastest-growing province in Canada? One in four people are under the age of 18 - that’s 1,250,000 kids!

This rapid growth means more kids and families rely on Stollery care than ever before. With the Stollery being the only children’s hospital in Canada that’s woven through an adult hospital, it’s an ongoing challenge for patients, families and staff alike.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Government of Alberta furthered its commitment to build a new Stollery and has provided $20 million in planning funds. As the project progresses, more funding will become available and this will cover a portion of the total costs. Philanthropy will help fund the rest, with the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation set to raise $250 million toward the new hospital.

A standalone Stollery will:

• Be designed with kids and families in mind

• Reduce wait times and improve care efficiencies

• Integrate physical, mental and virtual care under one roof

• Allow for more privacy with single-patient rooms

• Better support families with dedicated spaces and care-by-parent beds

• Provide modern infrastructure for advanced health care delivery

• Create additional acute-care beds and clinical spaces for adults at the University of Alberta Hospital site

The journey so far

We’re closer to a new Stollery than ever before thanks to the thousands of Stollery supporters like you who displayed lawn signs, shared on social media and wrote letters reminding provincial leaders why we need a purpose-built children’s hospital in northern Alberta. Thank you!

A joint investment between the Government of Alberta and the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, the campaign for a new Stollery will be one of Canada’s largest and most transformational fundraising campaigns supporting children’s health.

Fundraising across Alberta

MIGHTY MILLIONS LOTTERY

Your ongoing support of our spring and fall Mighty Millions Lottery programs is vital in supporting the purchase of highly specialized pediatric equipment at the Stollery and furthering our investments in cutting-edge pediatric research.

Last year Albertans stepped up in a MIGHTY way, buying more than 144,000 Mighty Millions Lottery tickets, resulting in $4.1 million in net proceeds helping kids live longer, healthier lives.

Thank you for supporting Stollery kids — and congratulations to all our winners!

NATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS

When you’re out and about and see that little yellow balloon displayed at various retail locations, you can feel confident knowing that all funds raised locally stay local.

Across northern Alberta, the local teams at our numerous Children’s Miracle Network and Canada’s Children’s Hospital Foundations partners work hard to raise money for the Stollery through point-of-sale donations, employee giving, in-store promotions, corporate matching and more. Last year, our national fundraising partners brought in $5,969,878 in support of Stollery kids and their families!

We all scream for ice cream!

Last year, our partners at Dairy Queen celebrated a sweet milestone – raising more than $10 million for Stollery kids! While Miracle Treat Day is a fan-favourite way of supporting the Stollery each summer, DQ franchisees across northern Alberta find creative ways to fundraise year-round, encouraging crew members to ask and inspiring DQ fans to give.

The impact of your personal giving is immeasurable, and we are deeply grateful for the donors who choose to make a difference in the lives of children and families through their generosity. Every gift holds tremendous significance and has the potential to create a legacy of compassion and care. Personal giving supports the Stollery Children’s Hospital’s programs and addresses the areas of greatest need. We are inspired by the dedication of our donors whose personal gifts enable individuals to share their resources, expertise and passion with the Stollery, fostering a community of support and healing.

Last year, personal giving, whether through donations or gifts left in wills accounted for $8,587,435, allowing the Foundation to reach farther, dream bigger and effect transformational change in how we care for our children in our community.

PERSONAL GIVING GREAT BEAR SOCIETY

The Great Bear Society is a community of people who are creating a lasting legacy by leaving a gift in their will to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. ‘Great Bears’ protect and support our little bears, and their gifts change lives forever.

“The Foundation and Hospital staff are very caring and should be thanked for all that they do. We’re honoured to support a wonderful organization that helps countless kids – giving them the best chance at a happy, healthy life.”

and Barb Tchir

Each gift and bequest is a testament to the continuing legacy of individuals who share the Foundation’s mission and vision.

One of the simplest and most impactful ways to meet the Stollery’s priority needs is through monthly giving. Throughout the year, our monthly donors receive updates about the impact they make on Stollery kids and their families. Your reoccurring gift supports further advancements, while also allowing us to respond to unpredictable and urgent demands the Hospital may face. You can join the Bear Hug Club during Radiothon, at your door, by phone, on our website or through direct mail.

We proudly cele-BEAR-ated 6,387 Bear Hug Club members last year!

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are the heart of our foundation! By donating their time and talents, they help keep our fundraising costs down, which means more of the funds we raise go to supporting world-class care for Stollery kids and their families.

The families in our Stollery Story Squad are an extension of our Foundation volunteers. These Stollery families donate their time by speaking at events, doing media interviews and everything in between. Every Stollery story is powerful, and every time a member of our Squad shares their story, they are helping kids from backyards across Western Canada.

From event support and community outreach to volunteering right in the Hospital, our volunteers and Squad members are a driving force behind the work we do.

STOLLERY WOMEN’S NETWORK

The Stollery Women’s Network (SWN) is a diverse group of supporters from across the province united by the common goal of supporting the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation through education and advocacy. This year’s SWN initiatives included recognition programs celebrating International Women’s Day, Global Day of Parents and National Grandparents Day. The Network held an inaugural wellness event, connecting women who share a passion for physical and mental health to build a like-minded community in support of the Stollery’s goal of giving all kids the best chance to live a long and healthy life.

Since 2014, the Stollery Women’s Network has raised more than $1 million for vital Hospital initiatives.

Committed funds fiscal 2024

Why is the Foundation holding donor dollars for the Hospital?

We establish our funding priorities each year based on priority needs identified by our expanding Stollery network of care.

As of March 31, 2024, we are holding $55.2 million (2023 - $51.2 million) in funds for the Stollery Children’s Hospital, Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta that we have committed to four funding priorities for kids’ physical and mental health: equipment and facilities, programs, training, and research.

This includes $20.7 million approved by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees for fiscal 2025 funding priorities (2023$18.1 million).

Delays in spending from our partners to whom we grant funds happen for a number of reasons. For example, delays in infrastructure projects can lead to delays in buying equipment, starting programs and carrying out research. And, delays in buying equipment can result from the Hospital testing the performance and suitability of equipment to make sure the Foundation buys the best state-of-the-art equipment possible for children’s health care.

As of March 31, 2024, we are holding $6.5 million (2023 $6.3 million) in externally restricted funds, whereby donors have specifically indicated the type of funding their gifts are to support.

Thank you to our donors

Our sincere thanks go to our many generous donors – including those who prefer to remain anonymous – who make it possible for us to advance specialized physical and mental health care at the Stollery Children’s Hospital and beyond its walls. Together, we can give all kids the best chance to live a long and healthy life.
