A message from our board chair Our vision is to transform children’s health — both within the current Hospital sites and beyond the walls of the Stollery Children’s Hospital. And with your continued support, we’re doing just that. The Foundation has made incredible strides in the past year, and it’s all thanks to YOU — our many generous donors. We know that child’s play helps kids cope and recover from illness and injury. Construction started last year on a fully renovated and expanded Saville Family Beach play area for patient kids and their families including a brand-new, outdoor Enchanted Forest that will offer more incredible, family-centred Child Life programming for kids and teens. The Hospital introduced a state-of-the-art simulation program that’s keeping expert health-care providers’ skills sharp by practicing on advanced mannequins, from a 700-gram baby to a 200-pound teenager, that breathe, talk and cry. We continued to invest in vital, front-line mental health services both inside the Stollery Emergency and through virtual health in communities across northern Alberta. To our delight, we saw the return of in-person fundraising events and hundreds of volunteers after a few tough years during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to growing community support for our exciting fall home lottery program, we launched and sold out our first spring Mighty Millions Lottery that’s changing lives — both that of the grand prize winners and of Stollery kids — with every ticket sold.

Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation | 2022–23

With the help of our Hospital, Alberta Health Services and community partners, we continue to explore and understand the changing needs of northern communities and how we can help improve physical and mental health services through specialized, expanded virtual health and culturally-focussed Indigenous health programs. And, because of you — and for the first time — the Foundation is part of the Government of Alberta’s capital budget as tens-of-thousands of Albertans raised their voices in support of our Tomorrow & Today campaign for a new Stollery Children’s Hospital. A Hospital that will one day be designed and constructed with kids and families in mind. The future of children’s health in Alberta looks bright. But we can’t stop now. We know that with your ongoing support as donors and volunteers we can make a meaningful difference for future generations, while making sure this generation of kids and families receive the best care possible when they walk through the doors of the Stollery. We do this for our many, province-wide donors who tell us what matters to them. We do this for our Hospital partners who rely on new equipment, research and technologies. We do this for your communities who understand just how important a world-class hospital is in their backyard. We do this for every kid so that they can all live a long and healthy life. Thank you for taking the time to read our latest Report to the Community and for continuing to help us advance children’s physical and mental health across Western Canada.

Sincerely,

Kelly Blackett Chair, board of trustees

National partnerships We’re proud to partner with the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) and Canada’s Children’s Hospital Foundation (CCHF) to support Stollery kids in a BIG way. Last year, our national fundraising partners brought in $5,529, 354 in support of Stollery kids and their families!

Double the chances to BE MIGHTY Alberta’s growing population is the youngest in Canada, which means more kids need specialized care than ever before. To further support families from backyards across Alberta, in addition to our fall lottery, spring 2022 saw the launch of our first annual spring Mighty Millions Lottery program! Albertans stepped up in a MIGHTY way by buying almost 76,000 tickets to sell out our inaugural spring Mighty Millions Lottery, resulting in $2.2 million in net proceeds to support cutting-edge pediatric research and the purchase of highly specialized equipment at the Stollery. Thank you for supporting Stollery kids — and congratulations to all our winners!

The local teams behind these national partners work hard to raise money for the Stollery through point-ofsale donations, employee giving, in-store promotions, corporate matching and more. When you support and donate to our CMN and CCHF partners, you’re supporting kids’ health in your own backyard, as all donations made in northern Alberta support the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

CMN is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children in local communities all across North America. CCHF helps to deliver CMN programs in Canada, along with other national partnerships. Together, CMN and CCHF proudly support 13 children’s hospitals across Canada, with 21 partners who support the Stollery locally.

Ben Stelter Fund

Fundraising for the Stollery Our community fundraisers come in all shapes and sizes! From adult-led initiatives like golf tournaments and weddings to child-inclined events like bikeathons and head shaves, we’re grateful to the community members who choose to support the Stollery by hosting their own fundraisers and collecting donations at their special occasions. Our youngest fundraisers are called Stollery Superstars. These youngsters collect donations through birthday parties, bake sales, school fundraisers and more. Thanks to Stollery supporters like you, our kid and adult community fundraisers combined to raise an outstanding $3,174,570 last year — with our Stollery Superstars making up $275,249 of that total alone.

The Ben Stelter Fund was initiated by Mike and Lea Stelter to continue the legacy of their son Ben, who was a Stollery kid. This new designated fund has had a significant impact on our revenue this past year, supporting pediatric oncology research and home equipment for Stollery kids and their families. The Stelter family continues to bring the community together in Ben’s name, with groups and individuals touched by Ben’s story raising an impressive $1,449,715 last year. The Stelter family, with ongoing support of Ashif Mawji, has fundraised in support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Ben Stelter Fund to further support families who have kids facing a cancer diagnosis.

Annual Giving When you become a monthly donor, make a gift in honour of a loved one or respond to our direct mail, you’re making sure Stollery kids have access to the best physical and mental health care they need when they need it most. Our annual giving team works with a wide variety of our donors throughout the year to highlight both Stollery success stories and the most urgent needs at the Hospital. Last year, our generous annual gifts totaled $2,450,054 in support of Stollery kids.

Corus Radiothon supporters make up 3,676 of our Bear Hug Club members!

Bear Hug Club Did you know that monthly giving is one of the easiest and best ways to support the priority needs at the Stollery? You can sign up at your door, during Radiothon, on our website or through direct mail. When you’re a monthly donor, you become a member of the Bear Hug Club! Your generous monthly donations will help ensure the Hospital is able to plan for and support Stollery kids and their families, even during unpredictable times. We wrapped up last year with 6,419 Bear Hug Club members who give an average donation of $30 per month.

Volunteers Volunteers are the heart of our foundation! By donating their time and talents, they help keep our fundraising costs down, which means more of the funds we raise go to supporting world-class care for Stollery kids and their families. The families in our Stollery Story Squad are an extension of our Foundation volunteers. These Stollery families donate their time by speaking at events, doing media interviews and everything in between. Every Stollery story is powerful, and every time a member of our Squad shares their story, they are helping kids from backyards across Western Canada. From event support and community outreach to volunteering right in the Hospital, our volunteers and Squad members are a driving force behind the work we do.

Thank you from the Stollery Thank you to our wonderful partners at the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and their donors for another year of making an incredible difference at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. In the past year, our team of staff and physicians have continued to grow and adjust their practices to provide extraordinary patient care despite the pandemic-induced pressures, respiratory viral season and uncertainty. We want to share our immense gratitude for the support the Foundation and its donors have provided, as your support continues to make the transformation of our care practices possible. We know that each of you has felt the same uncertainty we faced here at the Hospital, yet you continued to show your support and did so during unprecedented times, and for that, we could not be more grateful. Your contributions help us achieve more, and big or small, they make an incredible difference. Your funds are helping to advance research, enhance programs, training and education for highly skilled professionals, infrastructure, and state-of-the-art equipment and technologies that help children and youth get home quicker and recover with fewer side effects. Quite simply, we could not do this without the Foundation and donors like you. Thank you again for your continued support and another incredible year. With our deepest gratitude,

Because of you, the Stollery can update, expand and create new customized spaces designed specifically for kids, like the new surgical short-stay waiting room — with more spaces to sit, a play area, stroller parking, lockers and a washroom complete with an adult-sized change table. We’re looking forward to next year when the renovated Saville Family Beach is set to reopen. This expanded space will also include the Enchanted Forest, the first outdoor Stollery play space!

Perfect practice makes perfect Our Stollery Children’s Hospital is full of world-class experts. But even the best of the best need to practice their skills to be ready to handle whatever a Stollery kid may be facing. That’s where the Stollery simulation program comes in. Launched in the spring of 2021, this program allows the Stollery’s health-care providers to keep their skills sharp in a safe environment through simulated situations such as talking to a parent or putting in an IV, as well as complex procedures and operations. To help enhance the experience, the simulation program has a variety of life-like mannequins ranging from a 700-gram baby to a 250-pound adult-sized mannequin. But these aren’t your ordinary mannequins! They can talk, cry, breathe and respond during medical procedures to help prepare Stollery staff for real-life experiences. 18

Monitoring a young heart — on the go Last year, we turned to our donors for help raising funds to purchase a special piece of cardiology equipment: a Holter monitoring system. And donors like you came through to the beat of $165,000! The Holter device monitors heart activity like an ECG machine does, but it’s portable! It’s incredibly useful in identifying cardiac problems in school-age children, teenagers and young adults. The Holter monitoring system was able to support more than 850 patients last year. The cardiac program at the Stollery saw nearly 7,000 patients last year, highlighting how critical it is to have this much-needed equipment on hand and on hearts.

Getting kids home sooner At our 2022 Tee Up For Tots golf invitational, donors generously raised $105,000 to support the purchase of much-needed, specialized equipment for the pediatric autonomic laboratory. The laboratory needs this equipment to diagnose unique disorders in kids so they can get treated as soon as possible. With this equipment available, the wait list for specialized testing is reduced and kids can get access to a treatment plan that much faster. The autonomic nervous system controls important bodily functions that we don’t think about — sweating when we’re hot, our heart rate when we exercise and even carrying information to our brain about pain and temperature. Disorders of the autonomic nervous system are often known as “invisible” illnesses because individuals can appear healthy but have numerous debilitating symptoms related to those unseen functions.

The Stollery simulation program is the busiest program of its kind in the Edmonton zone. There is a growing demand for simulation-based education throughout the Stollery that exceeds the current available resources, which is why, last year, we provided $240,000 to support the program. Over a period of five years beginning in 2020, we have committed $878,000 to improve the delivery of the simulation program for health care providers at the Stollery.

Because of you, the Stollery can offer programs such as music therapy, art therapy and the Ray Muzyka and Leona De Boer Pet Therapy Program, which have all been proven to support kids’ physical and mental health care, while also helping them heal faster. In addition, the Foundation-funded pediatric palliative care program (ASSIST) is there to support Stollery families when a child is diagnosed with a terminal illness, or they experience the loss of a child.

Building Bridges Imagine you live in the remote northern Alberta First Nations community of Fox Lake, more than 800 kilometers from Edmonton. Your child is sick, and the local nursing station has advised you to take your child to the Stollery Children’s Hospital for the care they need. In this community, your summer transportation option is by barge, which costs $50 each way. In the winter, the option is to travel by ice road. The only other alternative is to book an expensive flight to Edmonton. Once you’ve figured out your travel arrangements, you arrive at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, a building larger than any you have ever seen. You’re overwhelmed by the noise, by the number of people and by the large space you need to navigate with your family. Then, when your child is admitted, you struggle to understand medical terminology that isn’t in your first language. This is a reality for many Indigenous families in Alberta who have children with complex medical needs. With nearly 30 per cent of Alberta’s Indigenous population under the age of 14, the province has one of the youngest and fastest-growing Indigenous populations in Canada. Indigenous families, particularly those in rural communities, face unique and stressful challenges when their children need to visit or stay at the Stollery. This highlights why the Awasisak program is crucial for improving Indigenous children’s health in northern Alberta and beyond. 20

Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation | 2022–23

The Awasisak Indigenous Health Program is the one and only Indigenous pediatric health program in Canada. The program aims to provide targeted support to Indigenous children and their families, especially those living in rural and remote communities.

Meet Blakely-Mae

The goal of the Awasisak program is to build bridges for Indigenous children’s health. It’s a unique example of honouring and implementing the Truth and Reconciliation recommendations and the child-first approach to improving health-care access through greater community engagement, outreach and consultation. The experts on the Awasisak team improve the experience of patients and families by weaving Indigenous language, culture and tradition into specialized, family-centred care.

What types of targeted support does the Awasisak program provide? • Daily contact with patients and families • Culturally safe space for families • Assistance with navigating the Hospital • Cultural events and ceremonies • Discharge planning (prescriptions, supplies, home-care)

Last year, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation invested $545,673 in the Awasisak program, which helped serve 496 families from 97 different communities across four provinces and all three territories. Support included 1,182 in-person visits, 777 virtual visits or phone calls and 2,380 consultations to service providers. The care provided by the Awasisak team extends beyond the walls of the Stollery, too. This can involve contacting rural pharmacies to make sure there is a plan to carry the child’s necessary prescriptions or liaising with the nearest health-care provider to arrange for home-care or follow-up appointments in the child’s community. Without donor support for the Awasisak program, Indigenous patients and their families would be missing a critical link in the care that they deserve.

When Brenna learned she was pregnant with Blakely-Mae, she was thrilled to be starting this next chapter surrounded by friends and family in Lloydminster. Plans changed when Brenna learned Blakely-Mae would be born with barely enough bowel to survive. With time being of the essence, BlakelyMae’s parents came to Edmonton two weeks before Brenna’s due date and as soon as Blakely-Mae was born, she was rushed into emergency surgery at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. A surgery her parents were warned she may not survive. Being in an unfamiliar city with a sick child was overwhelming for Blakely-Mae’s parents. They turned to the Stollery’s Awasisak Indigenous Health Program to help them navigate their unexpected reality. Eleven surgeries and 619 days later, Blakely-Mae was discharged from the Hospital. She’s followed closely by her Stollery team and returns regularly for appointments and ongoing care. The Awasisak team helped the family during Blakely-Mae’s time at the Stollery, empowering them to feel comfortable and confident when they made the decision to relocate to Edmonton permanently to be closer to the Stollery.

Pet therapy is good for the mind, body and soul

Benefits of pet therapy

What has four legs, soft fur and helps to relieve a child’s anxiety in a way nothing else can? The answer is a pet therapy dog at the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

“Pets are able to connect with kids and people in a different way than we’re able to,” says Melody Duncan, a Child Life specialist at the Stollery.“It’s amazing to see!”

The trained Portuguese Water Dogs and Australian labradoodles and their handlers visit patients pre- and post-surgery as part of the Stollery’s growing donorfunded pet therapy program. Together, they bring vital, timely distraction that’s proven to significantly reduce anxiety and provide many other positive health benefits to kids while they’re in the hospital.

Since the Hospital introduced pet therapy in 2015, these special animals have provided comfort during more than 3,000 patient family visits, bringing immeasurable physical and mental health benefits to Stollery kids and their families.

Dr. Muzyka and partner Leona DeBoer are the primary funders of pet therapy at the Stollery, adding that they’re proud to fund innovative solutions for anxious children who are feeling vulnerable and scared going into a surgery or having a procedure.

Each year, the Stollery’s Child Life team provides as many as:

1,152

music therapy sessions

410

art therapy sessions

386

“It’s been wonderful to see pet therapy bloom into one of the Stollery’s core family-centred care programs, reaching more children every year.” Dr. Ray Muzyka

The Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation is proud to be the top fundraiser for the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI). WCHRI is Canada’s only research institute dedicated to women’s, children’s and perinatal health. As the research arm for the Stollery Children’s Hospital, WCHRI ensures that the Hospital can offer the best evidence-based treatment and care for patients and families. Funding for WCHRI supports more than 400 researchers across 14 faculties and awards more than 300 grants each year. Research isn’t a quick fix, but rather a long-term endeavour to generate long-term results and insight. This is why our Foundation has committed $40 million of funding to WCHRI over a 10-year period from 2016–26. Last year, our Foundation provided $6,108,982 to WCHRI for life-changing pediatric research. With a shared passion for children’s health and well-being, our Foundation and WCHRI have formed a strong partnership in pursuit of a healthier future.

Stollery Science Lab One of the WCHRI programs supported by our funding is the Stollery Science Lab. This partnership features seven star researchers who are working to give all kids the best chance to live a long and healthy life. Their research includes developing better treatments for young patients with kidney disease, community-based strategies to prevent type 2 diabetes and health inequities among Indigenous youth, preparing children for the transition from pediatric to adult care and other initiatives. This program has been made possible thanks to a $5 million donation over five years from our generous donors.

“The high quality of care that children at the Stollery experience today was not developed overnight, but rather through years of research and innovation. The Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation’s investment in WCHRI and its researchers leads to significant discoveries, improves health care and ensures that children receive the best care possible.”

Thanks in part to Andrew Mackie, the Stollery is the first hospital in Canada to join the Fontan Outcomes Network, giving young heart patients at the Stollery a global network of clinical researchers behind them, which helps to improve outcomes and quality of life after surgery.

Lisa Hartling and Shannon Scott have developed a series of new information tools to help parents with questions about their children and COVID-19.

Todd Alexander and his team have unlocked a vital piece of information about how our kidneys reabsorb calcium back into our blood, allowing the mineralization of our bones—and it could be big news for people living with osteoporosis and kidney stones.

Your donations at work: Multi-year fundraising campaigns When you donate to the Foundation, you play a key role in transforming children’s health care in Western Canada by making sure kids and youth, no matter where they live, have access to some of the best physical and mental health care anywhere in the world. In addition to supporting the ongoing priority needs at the Hospital, donors like you are supporting multiyear fundraising campaigns, including The Saville Family Beach renovation and expansion project, the pediatric surgery clinic expansion and bringing integrated, clinical mental health services to the Stollery Emergency.

There’s no health without mental health Did you know 70 per cent of mental health problems begin in childhood and adolescence? Navigating our complex health system can be a challenge for patients and families. Families don’t always know where to go for help, and there are often long wait times to get the necessary care. To help close some of the gaps that exist when it comes to accessing vital child and adolescent mental health care, we’ve launched a five-year, $6.5 million fundraising campaign to bring integrated, clinical mental health services to the Stollery Emergency. Now in the fourth year of the campaign, our donors are playing a vital role in making sure kids from backyards across Alberta have access to both physical and mental health care at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. To date, this campaign has raised $2,181,503 in support of kids’ mental health care and has allowed the Stollery to expand its mental health team to include two registered nurses on each shift and licensed practical nurses. Social workers and child psychiatrists are also part of the team supporting inpatient and outpatient calls with kids and families. These newly developed roles allow caregivers to assess the needs of the child, to stabilize their condition and address health concerns on their timelines and at their convenience. 26

The Stollery Children’s Hospital also hired a clinical nurse educator to help foster a holistic approach to treatment. This role provides orientation, education and support, putting mental health in the minds of all Stollery caregivers.

Improving access and patient outcomes

A day at the beach — thanks to you! We’re building a bigger, better play area so that Stollery kids can be kids! The Saville Family Beach and Enchanted Forest will play a vital role in the development and healing of kids at the Stollery. Through play, children can get therapeutic stress release from an often overwhelming hospital experience and improve their overall physical and emotional well-being. The Beach and Enchanted Forest will be a part of the Stollery’s expert Child Life program that provides specialized, life-changing therapeutic programs for kids and families that have proven to provide long-term health benefits. The renovation and expansion will help provide a comfortable place for kids and families to connect outside of their hospital rooms and units, helping to create a sense of normalcy within the hospital setting. Nearly doubling the existing indoor space with the new outdoor expansion, this necessary upgrade will include 10-foot waves, a submarine, a teepee, play structure and so much more! Over the past three years, donors like you have invested $5 million to renovate, expand and reimagine the Beach and Enchanted Forest. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and all the partners involved, the renovated and new play areas are set to open in early 2024!

As our population expands, and the demand on our health-care system continues to increase, the Stollery Surgery Clinic can’t keep up with its limited space and aging infrastructure. Currently located in the Clinical Sciences Building, the clinic sees more than 40,000 patients each year, serving children and their families from all over Western Canada and beyond. Building a new state-of-the-art clinic means that Stollery families will finally have a space that matches the world-class level of care. We’re excited to announce that planning is finally underway to build the new Stollery Surgery Clinic on the 5th floor of the KAYE Edmonton Clinic, scheduled to open in 2026. This clinic will create a safer environment, place a greater focus on family-centred care and allow more surgeons to see more patients, providing solutions sooner. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation is committed to raising $13 million over four years to support this project.

Diverting the number of drop-in mental health visits is crucial. In 2022, 2,610 kids came to the Stollery with addiction and mental health concerns — that’s 42% more than the Hospital saw in 2020. More than 260 of those visits were redirected from emergency triage to scheduled appointments. Donor dollars have also allowed the Stollery to expand its outpatient psychiatry clinic. This has increased the capacity for outpatient and phone consultations, which many Stollery families rely on while juggling life and work responsibilities, and kids can have the comfort of receiving mental health support in their community instead of a hospital setting. For the Stollery, this means fewer emergency room visits for recurring issues and more capacity for immediate emergencies. Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation | 2022–23

Also in 2022, the 24/7 children’s mental health crisis line received 3,958 calls to the Stollery emergency care team. And the Stollery’s 24/7 mental health walk-in clinic, which is accessible through the Stollery’s Emergency triage, assessed 263 patients.

We support a new Stollery StolleryTomorrowAndToday.com

Alberta needs a new children’s hospital. Thanks for answering the call. In addition to fundraising, another mission of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation is to make children’s health a priority in Alberta. We’re doing this by bringing the voices of patients and families, volunteers and donors to our government and health care partners and reminding them that kids can’t wait… Our goal to build a new, purpose-built Stollery Children’s Hospital designed with kids and families in mind got closer to reality in 2021 with the launch of our Tomorrow & Today campaign. The campaign gives Albertans a platform to lend their voice to the call for a new Stollery and is uniting communities across Alberta in finding solutions to better serve kids and teens from northern Alberta and across Western Canada. It’s time that Stollery kids have a facility that matches the world-class talent of our Stollery teams.

28

We asked for your support, and you came through in a big way! More than 8,000 Stollery supporters joined our growing call for a new Stollery Children’s Hospital. Thank you for helping us remind provincial leaders that the Stollery is the only children’s hospital in Canada that is woven into an adult hospital. Because of you, we’re closer to a new Stollery than ever before! In March 2023, the Government of Alberta announced $3 million in the provincial budget over the next three years to start the planning process for a purpose-built children’s hospital in Edmonton with Foundation donors matching this amount.

But there’s more work to be done before shovels hit the ground. While we push for a new hospital, we recognize that a new facility is years away and donor dollars are critical today so that the Stollery can continue to offer the best programs, equipment, research and training for this generation of kids and youth. Continued community engagement and donor support means the Hospital can provide some of the best physical and mental health care anywhere in the world. Some recent examples of this are expanded mental health services at the Stollery and out in the communities, as well as a current campaign to create a best-in-class virtual care centre at the Stollery to bring care closer to home.

Committed funds fiscal 2023 Why is the Foundation holding donor dollars for the Hospital? We establish our funding priorities each year based on priority needs identified by our expanding Stollery network of care. As of March 31, 2023, we are holding $51.1 million (2022— $42.9 million) in funds for the Stollery Children’s Hospital, Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta that we have committed to four funding priorities for kids’ physical and mental health: equipment and facilities, programs, training and research. This includes $18.1 million approved by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees for fiscal 2024 funding priorities (2022 — $16.4 million approved for fiscal 2023). Delays in spending from our partners to whom we grant funds happen for a number of reasons. For example, delays in infrastructure projects can lead to delays in buying equipment, starting programs and carrying out research. And, delays in buying equipment can result from the Hospital testing the performance and suitability of equipment to make sure the Foundation funds the best state-of-the-art equipment possible for children’s health care.
