Functioning much like a radio call-in show, Telephone Town Halls simultaneously connect thousands of people with their elected officials or organization leaders from the comfort of their own home. Telephone Town Halls hosted by Stones’ Phones start with an invitation – a friendly call to constituents a night or two before the event, so that they know what to expect and when. On the night of the event, participants receive an automated call that connects them to a live conversation with their political leaders and neighbors. There is no need for people to dial-in. Telephone Town Halls allow for a two-way conversation with voters or members, giving both speakers and
participants a chance to be heard. During the event, audience members can join the conversation by pressing a button to connect with an operator and, if selected, speak directly to the community leader hosting the event. Periodic push button polls let listeners participate by responding on their telephone keypads and Stones’ Phones compiles these answers so every voice is heard. New features also allow participants to join in from the web and watch live video of the event. Enthusiastic supporters can contribute directly to a candidate or organization without ever hanging up the phone; in some cases, donations exceed the cost of putting on the Telephone Town Hall itself. Follow-up calls after the Telephone Town Hall help build momentum and keep supporters active.
Stones’ Phones has successfully conducted Telephone Town Halls for political campaigns, non-profit organizations, progressive organizations and corporations. In 2010, we helped U.S. House Member Joe Sestak of Pennsylvania attract over 400,000 people to his Telephone Town Hall meetings. Sestak, facing fierce competition in a Senate primary race against former Republican Arlen Spector, used Telephone Town Halls to introduce himself to Democratic voters in Pennsylvania. He ultimately won a close primary race, despite his opponent having received endorsements from both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. During the 2012 election cycle, a Stones’ Phones Telephone Town Hall event for former Virginia Governor Tim Kaine’s Senate race, which he would go on the win, brought in over $30,000 in campaign contributions from a single event. In 2013, Stones’ Phones held a Telephone Town Hall for the Detroitbased Fair Food Network to raise awareness of food deserts in Detroit and to show the steps being taken by the Fair Food Network to alleviate residents’ pain. That Telephone Town Hall was one of the most successful events in the organization’s history and provided ample resources for earned media and new activists. Our firm has extensive experience conducting Telephone Town Halls for elected officials, candidates, and advocacy campaigns. We work with our clients every step of the way from scripting and survey questions to training your staff and helping to moderate the event. We will tailor each event to the client needs.
