NOTES FROM Stonyhurst
From the HeadMaster
Dear Stonyhurst Families,
It has been a fantastic week for our pupils, with events that have sparked excitement, built lasting memories and created opportunities for growth. The highlight of the week for many was undoubtedly the thrilling cup final, where our pupils demonstrated incredible skill, determination and sportsmanship Although we were not victorious on this occasion it was still an unforgettable experience which showcased our pupils’ passion for the game and amazing support from our 300 strong team of Stonyhurst supporters.
Syntax had their Higher Line Options interviews this week, where they shared their thoughts, challenges, and aspirations. We are very excited about their move up to Higher Line and have been discussing the individual opportunities each pupils will have and how we can further support each Stonyhurstian.
On St Omer’s Day, on Friday, we commemorated the rich history of Stonyhurst with our annual St Omer’s Martyrs’ Mass, in which we honoured the former pupils of the College during its time in St Omer’s who, after returning to England, were put to death on account of their Catholic faith On the next page you will see a photograph of the plaque which was erected in the Shireburn quad as a memorial to their lives.
I would like to take a moment to wish our pupils a safe journey home as they depart to destinations across the world, for a well deserved, restful half-term break
With very best wishes,
John Browne

Lancashire Cup Final
On Wednesday evening, our 1st XV Rugby Team finished as runners-up in the Lancashire Rugby Cup Final, after a hard-fought battle.
Despite a valiant effort, our team narrowly fell short last night, finishing with a hard-fought 15-20 score line However, the numbers tell only half the story The team displayed immense determination, executing their signature fluid, running rugby against a well-organised and physical opposition.
While the result may not have gone our way, the team’s performance was nothing short of exceptional. Their skill, passion, and commitment were evident throughout, and they left the field with heads held high, knowing they had made the entire Stonyhurst community proud.

Valentines Day

On Friday, Cupid called on a group of our Poetry Pupils to run a special rose delivery service for their peers. Whether from friends, family, or secret admirers, each delivery brought smiles, surprises, and a little extra joy to the day.

Chaplaincy Round Up

It is a joy to have entered into a holy year, a year of jubilee in the Church – a beautiful invitation to focus on renewing and setting right our relationships with God, with each other, and indeed with the whole of creation. Pope Francis has given this year the theme ‘Pilgrims of Hope’, and he invites us to be builders of hope in the world. Over the coming months, we will be reflecting and acting on this theme and creating opportunities for hope.
As the early January snows receded, Stonyhurst welcomed a group of students and staff from Colegio Seminario, a Jesuit school in Montevideo, Uruguay. Their faith-filled and joyful presence with us was a delight, a particular highlight being the Mass in Spanish in Theodore House, celebrated by visiting Jesuit Fr Luis.
This half-term we have also enjoyed the visitation of Fr Peter Gallagher, the Provincial Superior of the Jesuits in Britain, who came to support us in our identity and mission as a Jesuit school. He was so pleased to join us in prayer (thank you to the Grammarians who led the exary, currently the youngest OS priest, who was ordained in November.men), and to meet and hear from pupils.
On the evening of Monday 3rd February, our altar servers led a Candlemas procession, which was a lovely opportunity for us to listen to the Word of God, to learn about and pray for different aspects of school life, and to sing. Ave, ave, ave, Maria!
Road Safety Notice

As we continue to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone on and around the Stonyhurst Grounds, we would like to kindly remind all drivers to be mindful of the 10 mph speed limit when on site.
This speed limit is in place to help protect our students, staff, parents and visitors, particularly during busy drop-off and pick-up times. We ask that all vehicles maintain a safe and controlled speed while entering and exiting the grounds.
Thank you for your cooperation and for helping us create a safe environment for all members of our Stonyhurst community.
