NOTES FROM Stonyhurst

From the HeadMaster

Dear Stonyhurst Families

Each week it is hard to believe that there could be a busier week but each week is proving busier and fuller than the last. The weather is beautiful and early requests for the outdoor tennis courts to be set up are already coming in. Snowdrops and daffodils have marked the start of Lent on campus. It was wonderful to start Lent off with Ash Wednesday leading a solemn and beautiful occasion

It was fitting that in this Lenten season we took time to reflect. Lady Grenfell Baines came to deliver an incredible evening Athenaeum lecture on her experiences of the second world war It was both very sad and uplifting to hear her story.

We have been treated to a three night sell-out run of Guys and Dolls with phenomenal west end quality performances from pupils. Their talent coupled with excellent team work and commitment has led to a dazzling show

We wish you a wonderful weekend.

With very best wishes

Kindertransport Talk

Lady Grenfell-Baines gave a moving talk about the Czech Kindertransport, where Jewish children were rescued from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia and brought to safety in Britain before World War II. She shared her personal connection to the story, highlighting the compassion of the British people who helped these children. Her talk emphasized the emotional trauma many of these children endured, and the importance of remembering this history to honor the survivors and ensure such acts of kindness are not forgotten.

Stonyhurst Football

A Huge Week for Stonyhurst Football

What a week it has been for our football programme.

On Wednesday our students traveled to UCLAN for an incredible opportunity to analyse their performance using cutting-edge software under the guidance of university lecturers and coaches.

On Saturday three Stonyhurst teams faced Rossall School in competitive fixtures - our Boys’ 1st XI, 2nd XI, and Girls’ XI all put in strong performances.

And on Sunday our U16s played strongly against Rossendale Valley with a 6-0 victory.

Rugby 7's

Another Day, another cup for our U13 Rugby 7's Boys.

Last week our U12 and U13 rugby squads travelled to the Aysgarth Invitational 7's tournament.

U12's - In their first 7's tournament of the season, the boys kicked things off with a hard-fought win over Sedbergh Prep. Despite narrow defeats in the next two games, they finished 2nd in the group. A close Cup semi-final loss to St Peter’s York was followed by a thrilling 4-4 draw against Aysgarth Prep, securing a well-earned joint 3rd place finish.

U13's - Fresh off their midweek success, our U13 boys established strong victories over Barnard Castle, Woodhouse Grove, and Sedbergh Prep before sealing the day with a dominant Cup Final win.

Huge congratulations to our U13's - Aysgarth 7's Cup Winners! An outstanding effort from all our boys.

World Book Day

This week, we celebrated World Book Day, a celebration that encourages more children and families to discover the fun and enjoyment of reading, because reading for pleasure can change lives. Our celebrations included pupils dressing up as their favorite book characters, World Book Day treats, quizzes, bookmark-making workshops, and photobooths, to name just a few. We hope our pupils enjoyed celebrating World Book Day as much as we did!

Many thanks to Mrs Brennan, College Librarian, for organising such a wonderful event.

Student Voice Platform

At Stonyhurst, we believe every pupil’s voice matters. Our Student Voice platform provides a safe, confidential way for pupils to share any concerns, ideas, or feedback about school life. While we always encourage face-toface conversations with trusted staff as the best way to seek support, we understand that sometimes pupils may prefer a more private approach. Student Voice offers an alternative way to speak up about wellbeing, academics, friendships, or wider school issues. By sharing concerns, pupils help create a supportive, respectful community where everyone thrives. Speak up, be heard, and help shape our school for the better!

Careers News

The Careers department has been helping Poets secure work experience in a variety of career areas including dentistry, marketing, and finance through our OS and parent network. Many thanks for their continued support.

CTECH Business Poets and those involved in our social enterprise group attended a digital marketing and communication workshop delivered by a representative from Glion and Les Roches Hospitality College, Switzerland which helped them work on their teamwork and leadership skills.

All Syntaxians have now met with a member of higher line staff to discuss their potential HL subject choices. This meeting combined with mock and Unifrog interest test results, taster lessons, and chats to teachers and older pupils will help them make an informed decision.
