THE ANNUAL FUND 2023/2024

.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS Each year, Stonyhurst staff and pupils identify projects for the Annual Fund that they believe will significantly impact, for the better, the educational and recreational experiences of our pupils during their time at Stonyhurst. Previous projects funded by you, our generous Stonyhurst Family include: • A laser tag system for the CCF • A black box theatre • A rugby scrum machine • A museum case for Shakespeare’s First Folio • Fishing rods for our pupils to learn fly fishing skills • Cricket nets at SMH • An extended St Omers Martyrs memorial • A golf simulator • Benches for the Embroidered Meadow meditation garden. This year the Annual Fund is focussing on the theme ‘Care for our Stonyhurst Home’. Please take a moment to look through the projects for the Annual Fund 2023/2024. No matter which projects you choose to support you will help Stonyhurst to thrive and respond to the needs of our growing community.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and generosity in supporting the Annual Fund. All gifts are meaningful, gratefully received and collectively transformative.

INTERACT WITH HISTORY £8,000 Professional standard interactive display touch screen

This display will allow our pupils to access digitised materials from the Archives. Following a recent fundraising appeal, we were able to acquire a digital book scanner, and we are now able to digitise materials in-house. Through digitised books, photographs or paintings of Stonyhurst, pupils can learn more of the history of their surroundings and access our amazing Collections, of which a great deal has been donated to the College from alumni who wish to share the gift of learning with generations to come.

“Every manuscript and archival record is, and must be, unique; each embodies the circumstances of its creation by one person at a moment in time. They necessarily reflect the people who made or used them: their characters and characteristics; their behaviours and abilities; their beliefs and priorities.” Joseph Reed OS 2011, Stonyhurst College Archivist

NO MATTER THE WEATHER… £15,000 A Clubhouse for the Harry Meadow all-weather pitch We all love supporting our hockey and football teams as they play on the allweather pitch, but we have long needed a focal point for our parents and visitors. We are seeking funding for a clubhouse to be built next to the all-weather pitch, providing a much-needed, multipurpose shelter as the next stage of the redevelopment of our all-weather facilities. It will provide protection from the elements for our spectators, a storage space for equipment when games are not in play and, some might argue that most importantly, it will be somewhere to keep the snacks dry and welcome parents for match day hospitality!

“The lessons I learned on the pitch have proved to be just as valuable in later life as those I learned in the classroom. Sport teaches you dedication, teamwork and resilience. It also teaches you that often in life you learn more from the losses than from the victories.” Charlotte Leach OS 2009 Former local councillor

SOMETHING TO ‘POST’ ABOUT £3,000 Rugby Post Protectors

Player safety has become a central focus for the game we all love. Ensuring our players can commit themselves fully to the game, confident in the knowledge that the very best safety equipment is in place, will allow Stonyhurst rugby to continue to be at the forefront of the schoolboy game. Stonyhurst rugby has always been totally inclusive, catering for pupils of all abilities and experience, so ensuring we always have the best safety equipment is paramount, especially as we introduce the women’s game to SCRFC for the very first time. From Smithfield to the muddy depths of Avenue 3, replacing our post protectors will continue to provide the safe and supportive environment that have made rugby central to a Stonyhurst education.

“Of all the theatres of sport I have been fortunate enough to play, Smithfield is the one forever in my mind. Athletes and friends, a unique atmosphere, the best coach that I ever had in Fr Charles Higham SJ all a huge influence in my life.” Barry O’Driscoll OS 1960 Former Rugby International

A PLACE TO REFLECT £10,000 Plants and benches for a garden in the Shirk Quad

The Royal Horticultural Society believes that ‘Gardening gives you the valuable understanding that life goes on, and that even if it’s not how you’d planned, you can still make it work.’ We would like to plant a garden, in the Shirk Quad, for our pupils to enjoy. A place where they go to reflect, spend some allimportant time in nature, and have a new out-door space to relax with friends. The funds raised will help provide benches, planters, and established plants.

Equipment: Plants and benches for a garden in the Shirk Quad

“The stunning grounds of Stonyhurst are a constant reminder of God’s grandeur surrounding us. Our hope is that by extending this into the Shirk Quad, we can offer our pupils an additional natural space for quiet reflection and wellbeing that will nourish them both spiritually and emotionally.” Catherine Crombie, Stonyhurst Director of Christian Formation

A CURTAIN CALL £10,000 New stage curtains in the Academy Room

Drama has always been an important factor in a Jesuit education and as such has been a vital part of a Stonyhurst education since our foundation in 1593. This longstanding emphasis on drama led to the term ‘Playroom’, which is still used when referring to the year groups at Stonyhurst. Last replaced over a decade ago, and in constant use during lessons, rehearsals and productions, the curtains have done a remarkable job but are in need of updating. New curtains will help enhance our drama lessons and performances, including the work of our brilliant pupil led stage crew. This will help keep Stonyhurst’s longstanding drama tradition alive.

“It was on the Academy Room stage alongside classmates like Charles Sturridge, Edward Duke and Hugh Wooldridge, all of whom would become prominent figures in theatre and film, that my first real theater experiences took place. They remain some of my best memories, too.” Charlie Peters OS 1969 Albert Schweitzer Screenwriter

CHECK, CHECK…1,2,3… CHECK £9,000 Radio Microphones to be used in SMH and College Productions Our school has believed, for over 430 years, that plays, and dramatic performances help to encourage a sense of community amongst pupils, improve their confidence and public speaking, enhance the memory, and encourage fluency in the spoken word. Increasing the number of radio microphones we have will allow us to extend our choice of plays in the College and SMH and provide more opportunities for our sound and tech crew to progress their technical skills.

Equipment: Radio Microphones to be used in SMH and College Productions

“Anyone attending Sister Act would have appreciated the extent to which the College drama department has raised its production values in recent years. A big part of the sound is the use of radio microphones. Having produced shows in London and working daily in broadcasting, I appreciate just how much an up-front investment in radio microphones would soon pay dividends, especially if they are shared across campus with SMH. The technology doesn’t date, so I can see them being used across multiple productions for generations to come!” Dominic Hartley OS 1986 Broadcast Consultant

FUN AND GAMES £10,000 New Playground Equipment for SMH

Play helps children to create friendships, learn about teamwork and develop a number of life skills. We are seeking funding to update the playground equipment at St Mary’s Hall. Nurturing our pupils’ love of the outdoors whilst continuing to provide a fun and exciting play area for them to enjoy with their friends.

“The children are often found building dens or creating paint using natural materials, to name but a few activities! New experiences present opportunities.” Ros Wroblewski, Deputy Head (Primary Phase) of St Mary’s Hall

PUT US ON THE MAP £6,000 The Duchess’ Stonyhurst Estate Map, c 1733. Mounted, and framed. The Stonyhurst Museum & Archives are home to one of the most significant surviving maps from the local area. Dating back to 1733, the Duchess of Norfolk’s map of the Stonyhurst estate provides invaluable detail of the names and locations of all the fields in the estate, many of which, we are pleased to say, still survive to this day. We would like to have the map placed on an acid-free board and placed in a UV filtered frame. This map will provide a clear view of the Stonyhurst estate. It will be used extensively as part of the local history element of the Junior Curators programme, in our Geography lessons, our IB curriculum and in preparation for exams.

“Stonyhurst has almost unparalleled resources which record its remarkable history. The ability to interact with these collections is an essential part of their purpose, and to making sure these stories remain alive within the Stonyhurst community.” Joseph Reed OS 2011, Stonyhurst College Archivist

IF YOU PLANT IT… £10,000 Replanting of fruit trees in the 17th Century orchard

The Jesuit Gardens are a focal point for the Stonyhurst Estate, especially in the warm and sunny weather! The area provides a beautiful and tranquil area for our pupils and staff and this, of course, includes our historical orchard, planted in the late 17th Century. However, parts of the orchard are in need of replanting. To remain in line with English Heritage we are seeking funding to replant the orchard with 17th Century species of fruit trees, including pears, plums, and apples – just think of the fruit crumbles!

“The gardens provided me with a place to reflect. Whether that be sitting peacefully on my own or spending time with my friends laughing and enjoying the beauty around us.” Poetry Pupil 2023

THE BENEFITS OF THE ANNUAL FUND:

‘‘

Enno, OS 2023

‘‘

Playing Rugby at Stonyhurst gave me some of my greatest sporting memories. The values that were instilled in us carried far beyond Smithfield and I often reflect on those special times, even today.

The JetSpot Prolights have been an indispensable part of the shows at Stonyhurst for the past three years. Thanks to their built-in gobos, we were able to add incredible lighting effects on stage and give the floor and cyclorama some much-needed texture. The Jetspots have also been instrumental in producing more focused spots on stage, allowing us to isolate actors and create emotionally charged moments that truly captivate our audiences. We are incredibly grateful for your generous donation, which has played a crucial role in enhancing the quality of our shows over the past few years. Your help has been amazing in making our shows so much better over the past few years. Thank you so much! Daniel, OS 2023

I think I speak on behalf of all of our members when I say that the fishing team has been a great addition to our co-curriculum at Stonyhurst and has given us the opportunity to challenge ourselves with new tasks. In particular, catching the biggest fish in the Infirmary Ponds or the farthest cast of the week on a Thursday afternoon has become a weekly highlight for many of us.
