MONO CLOTHING Story by Lucy Hyslop Photos by Zoe Bridgman
In the achingly high-octane world of fashion, Mono Clothing’s Heather Martin is that rare creature: the reluctant fashionista. She may sell nationally and internationally (New York City, Portland, Toronto), garner much attention (she’s been chosen for collaborations with novelist/artist Douglas Coupland and designer Yumi Eto, as well as Vancouver’s Movers and Shapers show in 2008, Lifetime Collective streetwear company and One of a Few’s Michelle Rizzardo), and inspire the next generation (she went from student to teacher of design and textiles in the same year at Vancouver Community College), but it’s all just a happy by-product of her main love. “Art absolutely fuels the clothes,” the 31-year-old stresses over a brew of Bougainville at Gastown’s Farfalla tea rooms near her Railway Street studio. “I find inspiration from my art projects and installations to build the clothing collection; I really enjoy textiles, so turning these creations into clothes is just a natural path.” Never, she adds of Mono’s formation in 2005, did she think she would be ‘in fashion’. “I love clothes, but so much of fashion is so fast and so misguided,” opines Martin, who sells locally in such stores as The Block and Eugene Choo, “and I really didn’t want to play that game.” In not playing, however, this self-styled free spirit and her brand of thoughtful, well-engineered, wearable sculpture have wooed a loyal following, all keen to see Interlacing Opposing Thoughts, this spring’s new
collection – or “capsule series” as she likes to call it. The intricate handmade pieces luxuriate in a “delicate roughness” – strips of ripped fabric, for example, or raw, distressed edges turned into a beautiful lace (prices range from $100 for a scarf to $600 for a jacket). “I was very excited to be working with opposing thoughts – black or white, natural or grey, darkness versus lightness – and the idea of those intermingling with one another,” says Martin, who first started to make her own clothes while working in retail in her 20s (she originally moved here – “for a boy and a change of scenery” – from Toronto). “The shapes are comfortably fitting but there’s still a sexiness to them.” It’s a point not lost on Jennifer MacKay, owner of The Block. “Heather makes clothes that on first impression may be tricky,” she says, “but you put them on and they fit so well and look so good, that they are actually easy.” They are also all designs that possess not only a distinct lack of colour (“I try to explore colour, but I always go back to muted ones – I guess it’s my comfort zone,” Martin comments) but, most notably, are the very antithesis of fast fashion. “Her in-depth exploration and recreation of raw materials into unique textiles make each piece a unique heirloom,” enthuses Jane Cox, the creative director of Vancouver’s Cause+Affect Design company and the force behind Movers and Shapers. “Heather is definitely one of Vancouver’s more serious fashion designers.” Not that Martin – who’s prone to self-effacement – would brand herself as exceptional. “There’s definitely an energy happening within fashion right now that is quite similar to what I am doing, so I am not so out there,” she says, making reference to Sweden’s
Sandra Backlund and Belgian-born Natalia Brilli, “but I feel that in a city like Vancouver it maybe does stand out.” With klieg lights shining more brightly in recent years on a parade of less-typical creative performers worldwide (think: actor Tilda Swinton, and contemporary visual artists Vanessa Beecroft and Shirin Neshat – all of whom she admires), it feels like Heather Martin’s time really is now. “I appreciate that there’s a bit of isolation, a bit of stillness in these artists,” she says. “They are just who they are.” And she, it must be said, is confidently just who she is. DIMA LOGINOFF Story by Ron Coldham
For those of us who grew up prior to the end of the Cold War, Russia’s post modern cultural contributions appeared to have consisted of little more than shitty cars, skinny ballerinas and mobbed-up hockey players. Oh yeah, and Yakov Smirnoff. Years later it would become very apparent, however, that our comrades to the east weren’t the only ones to fall prey to the close-minded propaganda of the era, as the end of Communism has helped reveal - or, perhaps more accurately, stimulate - one of the most burgeoning art scenes around. It looks as though there might be more to the whole story than just Tolstoy and Tchaikovsky after all. Enter the latest chapter in the Great Bear’s book of creative genius: designer extraordinaire Dima Loginoff. Born in Moscow in 1977, Loginoff has been expressing his brilliance through design for as long as he can remember. “Even as a child I was intrigued with design,” recalls Loginoff. “I guess I was into very strange games for a little boy. For example, I would design my own play shop. I would create my shop
windows, signboard, etc. Every detail of interior design and style was very important when I was playing. I took it very seriously. While other boys were enjoying football, I was playing STYLE.” Though his skills on the football pitch may have suffered during these formative years, his soon-to-be recognized artistic brilliance did not. Loginoff went on to graduate from both the International Design School in Moscow, as well as Britain’s RHODEC International, earning a reputation at both institutions as a rare and gifted artist. One look at his prolific output over his relatively short thirty-one years, and there can be little doubt that Loginoff is in possession of an innovative talent, most aptly expressed through unique inspiration. “This might surprise you, but while designing I almost always recall historical periods through my work. I have a link to history in my head and it’s very important for me. This thin connection between my art and historical eras - which I try to make not so ostensible - is the real aesthetic of my design, I guess. Design is a big, theatrical play and my mission is to involve you in it.”
and popularity have exploded on the pop-culture front (since its emergence a short time ago, Loginoff’s website has received hundreds of thousands of hits), it would appear the critical acclaim has been just as bountiful. Loginoff’s designs have already garnered a number of prestigious awards, including Best Designer at 2006’s Design Debut competition, as well as second prize at the 2008 International Design Awards in Los Angeles (for his Curl My Light lamp). But one can not help but feel that the awards and attention do not mean near as much to Loginoff as the knowledge that with each new creation he continues to grow as an artist. “I am happiest when I can open unknown sides of myself while designing,” the young artist confesses. “Fashion and design are pure art for me. I can do anything. Everything is allowed. I’ll almost never put any limits on myself when I am designing. And I can realize any crazy dreams from my mind.” Loginoff reflects for a moment, as if thinking back to that young boy playing “style” back in Cold War era Moscow. “I can do anything.” www.dimaloginoff.com
Loginoff’s motivation and approach are as refreshing and original as the designs which they inspire. And while his fame 15

H O T P A N D A TLC* FEATURED
HOT PANDA Story by RC Joseph
Typically, new magazines have relied on some big star to feature in their kickoff issue - Marilyn Monroe in that first Playboy; John Lennon in Rolling Stone. We here at TLC* would never employ such cheap tactics in order to grab your attention. TLC* is all about delivering the new and daring, not overstating the common and obvious. Hence, our first music feature is not comprised of some aging rock star or sagging diva. We have more respect for our readership. So allow us to introduce Hot Panda, this season’s most fashionable pop upstarts. Since coming together in 2006, guitarist and vocalist Chris Connelly, multiinstrumentalist Heath Parsons, drummer Maghan Campbell, and bassist Keith Olsen have been concocting some of the freshest sounds to tickle the airwaves in ages. Recently signed to Mint Records, this Edmonton-based quartet’s latest release, Volcano… Bloody Volcano! (the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2007 EP Whale Headed Girl), has garnered comparisons to everyone from Talking Heads and Roxy Music to Cibo Matto and Grandaddy. Recorded with producer Ryan McVeigh at Mid Ocean Studios in Winnipeg, the brilliant, hooky goodness of Volcano… Bloody Volcano! has Hot Panda poised to knock the indie world on its collective ass. Luckily, TLC* was able to catch up with drummer Maghan Campbell before the musical fisticuffs ensue: TLC* - Not having an easily categorized sound obviously makes it easier to evolve as a band. Was the unique sound of Hot Panda intentional, or just something you stumbled upon? Maghan Campbell - We were trying to
be a Beatles cover band. Just kidding. No, we all like really different stuff, so there are a lot of influences in play. We’re never afraid to try anything, that’s why there are so many different styles on the album. TLC* - Which do you enjoy more, the studio or the road? MC - They’re very different animals. The studio is really creatively fun, but being cooped up like that and listening to things over and over made me a little batty. I definitely came home from Winnipeg with a few screws loose. The road is great because it’s always a big adventure and a big question mark: Whose floor shall we be sleeping on tonight? Will people even come to the show? What sandwich will I get from Subway today? But no, the road’s great. I come home with a few screws loose every time we go on tour too, but in a different way. TLC* - Downloaded music: Buy it or steal it? MC - Buy the stuff you love, steal things that are only ok. TLC* - What is your favourite album of the last six months? MC - Maybe The Bicycles’ Oh No, It’s Love. We went on tour with them recently and we’re still always singing their songs in the van. It’d be hard to just pick one thing though- like I said we all like very different stuff. TLC* - Which dead rock star do you most resemble and why?
MC - 2PAC4EVA (for obvious Tupacrelated reasons). TLC* - This is a fashion magazine, so let me ask you one fashion-based question: Aliens have taken over the planet. Tomorrow everyone in the world will be forced to wear the same outfit. What will you wear on this, your last day of fashion freedom? MC - A silver jumpsuit. I would try to score brownie points with the aliens so they don’t incinerate me! Chances are the aliens will be smart enough not to incinerate a band this talented, no matter what they are wearing. A Hot Panda is great; a burnt panda is of no use to anyone. Hot Panda perform April 4th at The Media Club, Vancouver. www.hotpanda.ca www.myspace.com/hotttpanda
MC - Buddy Holly, because once I had my fortune read and was told I would die in a fiery plane crash. TLC* - If you had vanity plates on your car, what would they say?
