NOEL STEWART. Story. Lucy Hyslop

I was not expecting such beautiful low-brow revelations from one of the high priests of millinery. Britain’s Noel Stewart has worked in the upper echelon of couture with Christian Dior in Paris, collaborated with the illustrious Hussein Chalayan and seen his otherworldly creations crown stars such as Keira Knightley, Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears and Lily Allen, but he is far from a snob when it comes to his craft. “A really good baseball cap excites me just as much as fabulous head sculpture,” he confesses. “I love it every time I see anyone wearing a hat because I know how much they are gaining form the experience.” Bare hair? It’s clearly over-rated, according to his mantra. From age six, he was trying to top it, constructing his first hat “entirely out of the finest loo roll and cardboard with cotton-wool trim.” (Luckily, for some undeniable future museum retrospective on Stewart, it was even rediscovered recently by his mother.) Beyond loo roll and cotton wool, the Royal College of Art alumnus has a reputation for pushing the material boundaries (since his 2003 launch, when a college lighting project morphed into a hat, aficionados have come to expect his implausible creations involving high gloss resin and Perspex). Today he’s busy being more scientist than fashion designer (think: the style world’s equivalent to adventurous chef Heston Blumenthal), fiddling with a heat-responsive plastic mesh that he’s finding “rather startling.” Although it’s durable, he explains, “The trick is to make it luxury.” Another alchemy aha moment was the realization that he could freeze metal mesh with latex. “It was pretty astounding as it solved a major frustration of the time,” he explains. With contemporary art and architecture being Stewart’s well-known inspirations, who - and what - is tickling him at the moment? “I’m anticipating The Shard [at London Bridge, U.K.] greatly,” he says of the ‘iceberg-style’ skyscraper destined to be the tallest in the country when it is finished in 2012. “I love architect Renzo Piano’s work and the way he fulfills a brief.” (Artwise he has been collaborating on and off with the U.K. artist Alice Channer - “the way she approaches materials and space is very exciting”). His most recent headwear collection is a nod to three contrary heroines: Coco Chanel (relating to her “ease and elegance” with a palette of creams and primary colours”), Michelle Pfeiffer (pointing to her character Elvira Lopez in Scarface for the 80s’ Miami influence in creating “high shine acrylic clustered to create an unexpected trim for an optic white straw boater or a pewter straw trilby”) and the British surrealist Eileen Agar (“invokes a playful use of colour with seafood-adorned headwear”). Stewart pays homage to stellar milliner Stephen Jones, who compiled the recent show on hats at London’s Victoria & Albert museum. “He’s been a teacher, friend and mentor to me and to many others in the industry,” he says. “He defined how a modern milliner could work in a fashion context, and his ability to turn his hand to almost anything is a constant inspiration.” Along with other creators such as Philip Treacy, London is a hot bed of millinery prowess at present. “The city just has an ability,” Stewart concludes, “to nurture the slightly obscure creative industries.” www.noelstewart.com

DUTIL DENIM. Story. Ron Coldham

There are not a lot of things in this world that are loved internationally, always considered cool, and literally impervious to the fickle tides of taste. The Beatles will forever be adored. Picasso’s genius will never be taken for granted. And denim blue jeans will reign supreme as long as Earthlings continue to grow legs to put in them. Dutil denim co-owners Eric Dickstein and Darrin Kenigsberg were, no doubt, well aware of the world’s never-ending love affair with the dungaree when they started the Gastown-based landmark back in 2006. Having played a big role in establishing many of the most sought after brands of the past few years, dutil has now launched its own line of jeans: the Quintessential Series. Eric Dickstein was kind enough to fill TLC* in on dutil’s groundbreaking shop, the new line, and what’s in store for this ambitious duo. TLC*: Back when you started dutil, did you always envision having your own line someday? Eric Dickstein: Yes. The vision was and is clear: We will be a global brand and in the best stores in the world. And we are getting calls daily from retailers around the world saying they want to be the first in their city to bring in dutil. TLC*: How do you think your success in helping other brands launch will translate into success for the Quintessential Series? ED: Every brand in our store, we build them, it is a process. Brands do not walk out of the store. We educate the consumer on what they are purchasing and through time and consistency the consumers responds. We know dutil. The Quintessential Series are the best fitting jeans in our store. TLC*: How important was it to your brand to have the manufacturing take place in North America? ED: dutil cares about quality, fit and aesthetic. We chose to get the denim from the oldest and last standing denim mills in North America. And the jeans are constructed in Vernon, California, and designed right here in Vancouver. TLC*: Do you have any plans to expand into other facets of the fashion industry? ED: (In August) we are doing something that has never been done in Canada - we are opening up dutil “times”. This is a collaboration store that changes every six months. Our first partnership will be with Naked and Famous – a brand we launched globally in the dutil denim store. And we already have a list for the next three years of brands wanting to join forces. TLC*: Finally, do you think the fact that you now have your own line will cause other designers (whose products you sell) to worry that their products will take a back seat to your own? ED: No. We believe in all the brands that are in our store. There are reasons for them being there. dutil has its own culture. We are unique in the fact that we have street credibility without being assholes to the consumers. Our clients have been anxiously awaiting the dutil jean. They feel a part of the brand and, in actuality, they are. www.dutildenim.com

Jeff Hamada, Super Natural (for Oakley)

JEFF HAMADA. Story. Carmen Lam

“I enjoy the feeling of cleaning my ears with Q-tips,” quips Jeff Hamada. “Although I have been informed this practice actually pushes wax further inside – upsetting.” Cheeky. Self-describing himself as a “friendly Japanese-Canadian artist,” it’s true to note, Hamada is that friendly: his opening webpage shows him hand feeding a chipmunk. From “Tom Cruise Should Have Died at the End of Last Samurai,” to “Dear Louis Vuitton, I’ve Got Designer Bags, Under My Eyes,” the Vancouver-based artist produces pieces that are light-hearted and clever. So, it’s not surprising that Hamada’s work has garnered him attention from the likes of Converse, Oakley, and Electronic Arts. “I like humour,” confesses Hamada, “I don’t feel confident enough to make serious work.” And it translates. Hamada, who favours mediums like pencil crayons, India ink, and (learning by trail-and-error) acrylics, is inspired by the awkwardness of the everyday. “I write down conversations I overhear – that sort of thing,” says Hamada. A graduate from Emily Carr University, Hamada isn’t just another everyday artist, he’s the brains behind the successful blogspace, booooooom.com. “The name came to me just as I was falling asleep one night, and I got out of bed and registered the domain name,” explains Hamada. “I just wanted something totally ridiculous.” One could compare the website to The Sartorialist. Instead of highfashion street style, the viewer is exposed to paintings, drawings, photography and videos by artists from around the world. Hamada reveals, “I see the site less as an art blog and more as connecting people and building a community.” Hamada’s latest project, Small Victories, is an all inclusive photo exhibition taking place in Hong Kong. The show’s theme is finding the beauty or humour in the everyday. Curated by Hamada, people were encouraged to mail in 4-by-6 photos to him. “All the works will get published on the site, and then my favourites will go with me to Hong Kong.” Hamada adds, “The small format of the photos also play into the theme of these often overlooked moments.” With The Cheaper Show just around the corner (June 26), Hamada is one of 200 artists selected (out of 950 artist submissions) to showcase at the one-night only art sale, where each piece sells for $200. And what can we expect from him? “It will be colourful!” exclaims Hamada. Confessing, “Whatever it is…I haven’t started yet.”

BRASSTRONAUT. Story. Carmen Lam

When you think of the number six, a few things come to mind: a six-pack of beer, the Brady Bunch kids, and the number of geese a-laying. Added to the list is Brasstronaut; the Vancouver-based two-piece band has beautifully blossomed into a six-piece family. Formed in 2007, by vocalist and keyboardist Edo Van Breemen and trumpeter Bryan Davies, the sextet’s debut album, Mt. Chimaera is as diverse as the band and the instruments they play: “Slow Knots” is reminiscent of Air’s “Playground Love,” while the pop-ethereal “Same Same” is suggestive of Architecture in Helsinki’s “City Calm Down.” Hot-off-the-heels of South by Southwest and the Iceland Airwaves festival (where Sigur Rós’ trumpeters performed on stage with them), Brasstronaut recently celebrated their debut album’s release at St. James Hall. TLC* was fortunate enough to catch up with Van Breemen days after the show to talk about the album, music, Walmart and hotdogs. TLC*: Why did you name your album, Mt. Chimaera? Edo Van Breemen: My dad had just been to Turkey and suggested chimaera: a creature that is part lion, part goat, and part serpent – this continuum of a bunch of different sections. I thought it was a cool beast, but a black metal band Mayhem had already taken that name for their 2004 album. So, the place of origin of the beast was Mount Chimaera. TLC*: What are you listening to right now? EVB: Burial and Four Tet, a lot of that new Caribou album, Boards of Canada and Erlend Øye. And actually I’ve been listening to Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, and I’ve never listened to Coldplay because I read so many bad things. I think there’s something charming about it.…But, there’s some awkward lyrics, “those who are dead are not dead, they’re just living in my head,” – awful. TLC*: On Twitter you posted a (funny) self-filmed video inside a Walmart. Will your next music video take on this direction? EVB: We want a new video out soon, I’m thinking handheld HD cam: high concept, lowlevel production…The Walmart thing was awesome. My friend had told me about these – it’s obscene – drivable shopping carts, in already one of the most audacious American superstores. And it’s because people who are, I’m sorry, they’re just too unhealthy to want to walk around, are instead driving around in these fucking cars to shop for bags of chips halfway across the store. TLC*: Also on Twitter was, “I wanna know when Japadog is gonna get Japoutine?” Has anyone answered your query? EVB: The funny thing is, I have to publically say, the Twitter account is exclusively John Walsh our bassist, I have no idea what he tweets sometimes. I don’t tweet. But, I am a big fan of Japadog…I notice Japadog’s hanging around Waterfront Station – they’re slowly taking over. TLC*: Maybe the next video is with Japadog? EVB: Maybe. We should go for super local grassroots endorsements.

www.jeffhamada.com www.booooooom.com

TLC*: Maybe they’ll have one named after you? EVB: Like Brass-wurst? Sounds like something’s wrong with it.

TLC*: What is next for Brasstronaut? EVB: JazzFest is with Kid Koala and Bonobo. After that we have about a month before we head to Guelph to play the Hillside Festival. Then another cross Canada tour: Quebec City to Vancouver. (complete interview at tlc-vancouver.com)

TLC* NOURISH

HOMEMADE HAMBURGER. By. Chef Marnie Coldham

“What would your last meal be?” To guests and family alike, this was a commonly asked question around our dinner table growing up. Morbid as it may be, it was equally as interesting to see what people would pick. So I pose this question to you TLC readers: What would you eat before your hypothetical demise? Do you pick a comfort food, or something familiar that you eat everyday and love? Or do you go out on a limb and choose something ridiculously expensive and exotic, that you have only had the pleasure of eating once on an extremely rare occasion (or when someone else is picking up the cheque)? As of today, my answer would have to be a huge porterhouse steak with bone marrow, French fries and a jug of béarnaise sauce. (That’s what’s great about this game, you do not have to think about fat or cholesterol - it’s guilt free!) Though my answer has changed several times throughout the years, my Mom’s has not. Every single time she eats a juicy hamburger - usually about two mouthfuls in - she proclaims, like some new epiphany, that this would be her chosen last meal without a doubt. And so with that I will give you this recipe - a burger really worth dying for!

HOMEMADE HAMBURGERS 2 lb. (900 g) lean ground beef 1 yellow or sweet onion, finely chopped 1/4 cup barbeque sauce 1/4 cup ketchup 2 Tbsp garlic salt 1 Tbsp soy sauce 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 Tbsp sambal oelek or chili paste 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese, optional 8 hamburger buns In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, barbeque sauce, ketchup, garlic salt, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, sambal oelek, and freshly ground pepper. Mix until all ingredients are fully incorporated. If making blue cheese burgers, gently mix in crumbled blue cheese at this stage. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours. Divide into 8 balls and form into patties.

Meanwhile, preheat grill to high heat. Brush your preheated grill with a little oil and place patties on. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side and until the juices run clear. Remove from grill and place patty in hamburger bun. Top with favourite condiments and fixings. (I go all out and add bacon to an already heart stopping burger…go big or go home people!) Enjoy, and have lots of napkins! Tips. I always double the recipe and make extra patties to have in my freezer. Great after a night at the bar. Careful lighting that barbeque thought. Don’t let the open flame get too close to your breath. If you are having a lot of people over, make smaller patties (aka sliders) and serve them on dinner rolls. Just by omitting blue cheese and adding different toppings you can have a burger flavour that meets everyone’s tastes. Drink Pairing. Beer or a Côtes de Rhône.
