Diamond in the Wilderness – Saskatche By: Steve Cegielski

H

eading “North” stirs my soul. North we were headed, Northern Saskatchewan to be exact. Saskatchewan is known as the “Land of the Living Sky”; we were embarking on an epic adventure.

Milton Lake Lodge would be our destination, Northern Pike, Lake Trout, and Grayling were on our agenda for this late June fishing adventure. Insert fellow fishing enthusiasts and we had the making of a classic Canadian fishing trip that would create memories of a lifetime. Last winter at the All-Canada Show, a partnership was formed. Milton Lake Lodge would provide the 2016 All-Canada Show Grand Prize Giveaway Trip, and Scott Pautz and I, owners of the All-Canada Show, would tag along to host the adventure. Location confirmed, now we just needed to draw our lucky 2016 Grand Prize winner and guest of choice. Fast forward to Spring 2016, we’ve got our winner – Chris Goihl and his son Michael from Shakopee, MN, were excited and ready to experience Saskatchewan and all its fishing glory at Milton Lake Lodge. Michael’s first Canadian adventure, a trip this college kid from MN won’t soon forget. Milton Lake Lodge in extreme Northern Saskatchewan (stone’s throw from the tree line) is operated by Maxine Key and a host of staff including a first rate “Red Seal Chef” and top notch guides. Our adventure began immediately upon arrival

to Saskatoon airport, with reports of a forest fire burning near Points North, SK airport, the next leg of our journey north. Nature threw us a curveball, but Maxine was ready, fishing must go on. Quickly re-routing aircraft to Wollaston, SK First Nation airport and we were back on track for a short float plane ride into Milton Lake Lodge.

and rules of the water, including handling of trophy fish, and we were off to find the gators. Meanwhile, Chris and his son Michael eagerly followed suit with their guide, time to make some Saskatchewan fishing memories. This father-son duo was living the dream, no better way to connect than fishing side by side in Canada.

Arrival was spectacular, the Otter float plane banked hard right over the lodge, and an easy touchdown on the water. Ready, set, go… time to fish. Milton Lake Lodge is built on fishing, no time wasted; quick hellos, lunch and the guides were ready to tackle the fish. Our guide set us up with top notch equipment, pointed out the boat safety equipment

BAM, BAM, whoa… 30 minutes into our Northern Pike mission, and I found myself battling a toothy beast. Wow, that didn’t take long. Drag screaming, followed by a tail walk across the water; this Milton Lake Northern Pike has heart. But in the end we were admiring the 37” starter fish in the cradle. Smiles all around as the video was rolling, and a couple quick

wan, Canada photos before sliding the first quality gator back into the depths of Milton Lake. Remember CPR is not a request, but rather demanded… Catch, Photo and Release of all trophies. On a side note, fish handling is of upmost importance especially in Northern Saskatchewan, short summer season equals slow growth rate. Protecting these mature highly reproductive fish is a must. Let the trained fishing pro “Guide” handle the fish to ensure the fish safety. Alright, we’ve got pike slime on our hands. Well, I mean guide’s hands… wink, wink, wink, that’s why we love first-class guided Canadian luxury trips. Pike and more pike was the story all afternoon, that’s until our guide announced our dinner plans included an island. Both Scott and I looked at each other and mumbled, “Island?” “How about shore supper tonight?” the guide stated. Scott gave a resounding, “Yeah let’s do it!” Flexibility, even at a 5 star lodge, is how Milton Lake Lodge rolls. Fish tales abound over “Shore Supper” that evening on the island. Chris and Michael spoke of the monster they had boat side and many other Pike that succumbed to the tackle, which a quick “smart phone” photo provided all the digital evidence to be shared later. Social media material that fishermen dream of, but back to fishing. No Wi-Fi on this island, and that’s a good thing. Did I mention the first-class service? I felt a little guilty standing on shore enjoying a Labatt Blue while our guides are scurrying about to prepare supper. Wow, what a spread they created at each and every shore lunch (supper); smoked Pike, deep fried Pike and Lake Trout, potatoes, and beans over an authentic Canadian flavored wood fire. And don’t forget the tasty desserts. Fish might be the game we were all chasing that week, but Chris and Michael came to shore lunch the second day with stories of Moose. Michael stated over and over, “You won’t believe how big they are.” They boated up to a magnificent bull feeding on submerged vegetation in shallow water. Wow, now that’s worth the price of admission, can’t find that on home waters, only in Canada. Now fully immersed into the Milton Lake Lodge way of life… time to relax and let the fish come to us. Soaking in the full spectrum that is Milton Lake Lodge; five-course meals, comfortable lodge, top-notch boats, and driven guides. Each day, we chased Pike in the morning and Lake Trout in the afternoons. That is unless the Lake Trout

2017 ALL-CANADA SHOW GUIDE 7

weren’t cooperating, then back to the pike. Locating pike wasn’t difficult. Remember we had a guide, he found the fish, and we just had to catch them. It was time to get Jiggy. Switch gears and its lake trout time. Dropping the 2 oz white tailed jig directly into 75-100’ of water, and long lifting - reeling jigging motion was the recipe for success. The first 10 drops, and I was starting to doubt the method, but then BAM, fish on and it all made perfect sense. Battle ensued, 80’ battle won by me, and I was holding a beautiful Milton Lake trout. Hefty Lake Trout on light tackle, you won’t believe the power of a Lake Trout in open water. Trolling followed jigging each day, but if the trout didn’t want to join in the party, we quickly broke out the Pike tackle. That’s when it happened, beast alert. Scott and I were changing baits all afternoon looking for the 40”plus monster. Ok, we like all size fish, but we have both caught our share of 25-35” Pike. Numbers game wasn’t what we were chasing. We both wanted that camera-worthy beast, one to melt the pages of the All-Canada Guide. “How do we entice the big pike?” Scott questioned our guide. Of course we’d thrown everything from the Dardevle to the buck tail including swim baits, buzz baits, stick baits and soft plastics. Scott was willing to throw anything, and I mean anything. Our guide summoned his mountain of knowledge or should I say 150 pounds of tackle. What he emerged with made us all chuckle, a foot long soft plastic trout looking swim bait affectionately referred to as “Tommy.” A shrug of the shoulders by Scott and a quick, “Let’s do it,” and the Pike game was changed forever. Can’t be sure, but I believe the “Tommy” bait speaks to the fish. Well “Tommy” spoke that day. With only four or five casts into the game “Tommy” took a body hit, game on. Scott was battle tested all week, but this Pike had his number. Cameras rolling, our guide barking (suggesting) orders, and a stiff, boat-pushing wind create chaos Canada style. Whoa, when the dust settled, the 42” and change beast was corralled in the cradle. Breathe, straighten boat, and prepare for the photo shoot. I know Milton Lake hosts larger Pike, but this was Scott’s monster and he and “Tommy” earned it together. Every lodge has traditions, I love traditions. So, that’s why you may notice a soft measuring tape tied to the boats light post in some of the photos. Dangling tape states beast alert to fellow anglers - Milton Lake fishing victory lap of sorts. Hard to imagine in today’s social media driven culture, but remember cell phones have no place in Northern Saskatchewan, so old school communication rules. All this fish talk is possible, because lodge owners like Maxine and her team take care of all comfort details and we as guests can concentrate on fish.

All-Canada Show Owner, Steve Cegielski with a hard fighting Lake Trout.

Did I mention the hot tub on the deck to soothe your sore muscles at night, Wi-Fi to catch up on business emails (if absolutely necessary, but not recommended) or satellite TV to keep in touch with sporting events? All of this put in place to make your dream fishing vacation seamless and stress free. I remember standing on the deck one night looking up at the magnificent stars thinking to myself, ”How is this all possible 500 miles from civilization?” Amenities abound as we Americans are accustomed. Hat’s off to Milton Lake Lodge. I’m not only impressed with the fishing, but the luxury mixed with wilderness is astonishing. Thank you to Milton Lake Lodge and the entire staff for hosting the All-Canada Show. Please be sure to check out video footage of this trip on the All-Canada Show Main Seminar Stage. Canada…What Women Want! By: Jessica Cegielski

s a working mom and wife, busy running kids here and there, trying to provide healthy meals and activities for my family, attempting to keep our house running smoothly and not forgetting something important on the calendar, I dream of a time and place to let it all go… Oh, if only I could be wined and dined, have time with dear friends, and laugh until it hurt. Enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep; get up in the morning to someone pouring me a cup of coffee and serving a made to order breakfast with mouthwatering fresh fruit and pastries. Then off for a day of fun making memories to last a lifetime…. Dreams really do come true at Totem Resorts in Northwest Ontario. Now, you may say, “Fishing trips are for the guys,” or, “Why would a group of women want to head north on vacation?” After this trip of being treated like a queen by Stephanie Brown and her staff at Yellowbird Lodge and Chalet while staying in a luxury chalet on Lake of the Woods, I say, “Why wouldn’t you choose this as your girls’ trip destination?” The Brown family owns and operates Totem Resorts on beautiful Lake of the Woods in Sioux Narrows, Ontario. With three luxury fishing lodges Totem is truly the perfect blend of luxury and adventure. Totem Lodge, nestled among the majestic pine trees and sparkling lake, offers 5 star accommodations in the lodge or a private cabin. If great fishing is what you’re after, that’s just one of the many specialties offered at Wiley Point Wilderness Lodge – affordable luxury in the wilderness located in the heart of Lake of the Woods.

Rachel Pautz with her 30” walleye.

Lori Muench with her first trophy pike.

And our home away from home included the panoramic views and world class charm of Yellowbird Lodge. Amenities include gourmet meals, luxurious accommodations and 5-star service while staying in the lodge, chalet or a private cabin. I have been fortunate to travel to Canada with my husband, our children and other family and friends. All of these trips have been wonderful and have created memories to last a lifetime. This trip to Totem Resorts and our stay at Yellowbird Lodge and Chalet was a great destination for this group of fun ladies for a grand adventure! A discussion with Eric Jr. about how to attract a

Yellowbird Main Lodge (Totem Resorts)

new type of clientele to Totem Resorts and the All-Canada Show started the planning for this “girls” trip. I was lucky to be joined by five wonderful women – I knew that with this group there would not be a dull moment on our adventure. Rachel Pautz, brings Canadian fishing experience as the wife of Scott (All-Canada Show owner), Janel Pagels, who has fished the waters of Northwestern Ontario the past two summers, Corinn Sevcik, not new to Canada but few fish to her name, and Lori Muench and Sally Letter, who we affectionately named the Canadian fishing newbies. Collectively, preparing for vacation included scheduling the lives of 15 children, prepping six husbands, and finally packing for ourselves; we were all ready to get away from it all. As a group, we of course packed much more than needed, but as long as the six of us and our gear fit in the Suburban to head north of the border, we called it a success! The adventure began as soon as we left the driveway in Wisconsin. Six women in one Suburban is the recipe for lots of stops, so needless to say, we didn’t make the best time to Sioux Narrows, just a short drive across the Canadian Border. We accomplished our goal of arriving on time for dinner and WOW… dinner did not disappoint! Not only was the steak and lobster absolutely mouthwatering, but the presentation and service were impeccable. We learned early on to order a couple desserts to share, or we would not be able to fit into our bathing suits

for the hot tub overlooking the beautiful lake view. After a restful night of sleep in Yellowbird’s Chalet we made the short walk to the main lodge for our breakfast. An impressive breakfast bar with an option to add “made to order” hot items was complemented by attentive, friendly staff. A fresh cup of coffee was enjoyed as we looked out the grand windows to the morning awakenings of Totem Resorts in Canada. Our guides for the day greeted the six of us with the promise of a great day of fishing. As they packed our gear, the ladies from Wisconsin wished each other luck, with excitement to meet at noon for shore lunch. Prepared for our day on the lake we boarded two boats and began our adventure. Lake of the Woods offers infinite fishing spots. As the boat cruised at a steady speed across the still waters our guide pointed out geographical landmarks as he expertly maneuvered around the islands. Clear waters surrounded by heavily wooded forest and massive rock formations were the backdrop for our first day of fishing.

Lac Seul - A Lifetime of Fishing Awaits! By: Scott Pautz

W

hen Canadian fishing is discussed in Midwest households, there is one body of water that everyone will not only recognize, but it will sit on the rim of many fishing “bucket lists”. That body of water is Lac Seul in Northwest Ontario. On my many fishing adventures with our friends to the North, I have never laid fishing line into this beast… but the lake has always intrigued me. Now, if you are in that minority crowd that has not heard of Lac Seul – let this settle in. The lake itself is 150 miles long, covers 640 square miles of surface area, and has thousands islands! It is a monster for sure, and the quantity and trophy potential is at the highest level. Appropriately nicknamed the “Walleye Factory”, this place spits out walleyes as often as the most recent US presidential election spit out lies, and big walleyes at that! As if having that nickname is not enough, Lac Seul also sits near the top of the list for trophy Muskie fisheries in the world. True giants caught here have topped the 60” mark… (yes 60!, not 50). That is a magical plateau, and would send chills through the most seasoned Muskie fisherman. Reproduction rates, lack of pressure, and sheer size of this system ensures this lake will remain at the top of quality waters for generations! At last winter’s All-Canada Shows, the opportunity arouse to set boat to water in this magical place with Moosehorn Lodge and owners Carter and Linda Rice. If the name Linda Rice rings a bell, it’s probably because she is one of the most decorated

Moosehorn Lodge owner, Linda Rice with a Lac Seul 50!

Muskie anglers in the world. She is the current women’s world record holder with a 57” slob of a ‘Ski. Linda has boated over 36 fish that break the 50” mark on the tape… no guff. She has been a part of fishing videos and TV shows, and has fished bucktail to bucktail with such names as Pete Maina and Joe Boucher. Her resume is very impressive. Now, you need a minimum of two things to catch that many muskies of that size. First, a body of water that can produce them… Lac Seul is that for sure. Secondly, one heck of a lot of hard work, passion, and determination. After spending a few days at Moosehorn Lodge, I can attest that Linda has both. She is not just a lodge owner, but a master angler for sure. Moosehorn Lodge is located on the English river watershed and is the gateway to Lac Seul, just outside of the town of Sioux Lookout, Ontario. This eastern shore lodge is a drive-to lodge that offers both American and Housekeeping plans. It is nestled into a beautiful Canadian bay and I must say the setting is gorgeous. This trip was based on the American plan setting, and the food was spectacular!

American Plan shorelunch.

The trip consisted of three other All-Canada associates and close friends: Shane Deiter, Jason Hillmann, and Adam Drefcinski. We set the GPS to Sioux Lookout, Ontario and Moosehorn Lodge - this adventure was about to roll. While the

amount of fishing experience in the truck was vast, we did have two newcomers to Canadian fishing (which to me was almost as exciting as the fishing). Being part owner of the All-Canada Show, I love to see new people explore what Canada has to offer in fishing and hunting. So many people think Canadian fishing is all about roughing it, and while you can certainly have that type of trip, this week was not one of those! As the wheels finally came to a resting spot – we had arrived at Moosehorn on this late July day. To say this is a well-kept camp is an understatement… I witnessed a staff member sweeping the asphalt! No doubt this was a hardworking crew and Linda runs a tight ship. That is what you love to see as a guest. With introductions made and fishing licenses signed, we settled into our cabin, sampled a Labatt Blue, and tied some line. This was indeed a guy’s trip, so yes, some sort of friendly wager on the largest fish was going to be a part of it. Now I am NOT a gambler and no deeds to houses were thrown out, but I did have to dig into a few Andrew Jacksons to be in. These guys know how to fish. They’re Wisconsin guys, so they have worked very hard for a few fish on high pressure fishing systems back home. We were about to head out on LAC SEUL, IN CANADA, and we were GUIDED. I knew they were going to pound fish, and figured I may end up short on some green backs! The first day of fishing found us boating the

AllCanada.com

2017 ALL-CANADA SHOW GUIDE 29

channels and bays on an early morning targeting walleyes. With all the species this fishery has to offer, we just HAD to chase walleyes right off the bat. Riding in the boat with this crew was very similar to telling your hunting dog to load up in the truck on a Saturday morning. The anticipation level to set line was sky rocketing. Our guide for the week was Tony Crann, a local and lifetime resident of Sioux Lookout with more than 25 years’ experience on these waters. I was pretty confident we would find Walter and hundreds of his friends and family members. As we began to work a sharp break in about 25 feet of water, 30 minutes or so had passed like nothing. We had managed to pick up a couple walleyes, not bad… but it was not enough for our guide Tony. Lines up fellas! With a quick relocate of the boat about 200 yards we set in again... Bam! Double header right off the start, then it all began. Net yelling, minnows flying, pictures snapping, and eyes hitting the cooler as well as back in the water… our first taste of The Walleye Factory. Shore lunch time! With the cooler stacked it was that time of day, one of the many reasons we love to fish in Canada. With a classic wood fire, fresh Canadian walleyes, and all the fixings, this week was going to be a weight gainer for sure. As forks began to scrape the plates, it was made clear that trip member Adam Drefcinski had clearly out fished us on this first morning. Amassing some truly stupid walleye totals in a few hours, this guy was looking like he should give the U.S. walleye tour a shot! A true veteran of fishing, he waited until shore lunch time to notify us how well he did this morning. That is fine – it was early and the games were not over yet. Moosehorn Lodge offers a variety of fishing species, whether it is on Lac Seul or on Big Vermillion Lake, you can chase anything you love to chase. So on

Shane Deiter with a staple of the walleye factory.

The guys trip to Lac Seul.

our second day, we took advantage of this multispecies lodge on Big Vermillion, giving some Lake Trout, Small Mouth, and Northern Pike a go. This body of water was absolutely crystal clear making the Lake Trout fishing a must try. As we enjoyed a few successful Lake Trout landings, I was reminded how much entertainment these fish can provide with catching. You better have both hands involved in the capture, or you will be missing your fishing weapon. Just so much fight in this fish!

and Adam were off with another Moosehorn Guide – all in on the Musky hunt. The day produced many casts while we worked some of Linda’s favorite honey holes, but today was not the day we landed a legend. While our group did witness two fish over 50” follow to the boat, and several fish at the 40” mark, we could not seal the deal! In a one day outing the odds are against you, it is a fish of persistence. No worse for the effort, and certainly an experience I will never forget.

Late afternoon involved cruising the shorelines in “seek mode” for the little fighting giants – better known as Smallies. Although my bass fishing experience is somewhat limited, I do enjoy a few hours of casting light tackle for big hits! Once hooked-up, you know you will have a small rodeo of a retrieve, with all the darting and jumping about. I simply love the dark green striping some of the Small Mouth Bass are born with. They are spectacular looking fish!

With bags to pack and equipment to load, this trip was near the end. Moosehorn Lodge at Lac Seul is true wilderness – the water and the shoreline simply endless, and a lifetime of fishing staring you right in the face. A chance to spend it with great friends and hosts… I would not have wanted my first trip to the “Walleye Factory” any other way.

As we rose and made our way through day three and some more fantastic walleye fishing, we all agreed that the last day of the trip would be reserved for the giant trophies of Lac Seul… the Musky. We were not going home unless we put forth a full day on the best musky waters in the world. I know there is a reason they call it the “Fish of 10,000 casts”… maybe mine would come at cast 125? There was a chance! While discussing our Musky adventure the previous night during another fabulous American plan dinner, I could tell we had peaked the interest of Owner Linda Rice. Not only did she clear her schedule the next day to guide us, but she wanted in on the fishing as well. Not a chance in heck we would pass up the opportunity to chase these legendary fish, on legendary waters, with a fishing legend… I am all in! Adam Drefcinski with his first lake trout.

Jason and I joined Linda in her boat, while Shane
