DOWN DEEP - WALLEYE ACTION IN ONTARIO By: Steve Cegielski

Ok, you like to fish Walleye and Pike. Who doesn’t? It’s time to book that

annual trip at the All-Canada Show. “Which lodge this year?” is the number one question I ask myself as I roam the show floor. So many great Canadian lodges and so many I haven’t experienced yet. Drive-in, Fly-in, Boat-in, Outpost, American Plan and Housekeeping options – they are here.

New adventure is my number one request. There are fish everywhere in Canada…just pick your comfort amenities and ready, set, go! I have talked with Dave and Linda Becker, owners and operators of Stormer Lake Lodge, north of Red Lake, Ontario, at the shows for years. Listening to Dave and Linda glow about their walleye action on Stormer and Kirkness Lakes has pushed me over the edge, I booked it! Over the years, I have experienced the “guys” trips, and the “roughing it” trips, but this time I’m excited to explore Stormer Lake Lodge waters with my wife Jessica, my cousin Shelly, and her husband Steve. We may be related, but busy lives keep us from truly catching up. Our week of shared laughter and reminiscing of old adventures only strengthens our family bond. Shelly being the newbie to Canada stated, “I’m not really sure I’ve ever caught a walleye.” Time to end that terrible fishing track record and I guaranteed her walleye success!

Steve Cegielski with a great northern pike.

New adventures drive me, excitement around every corner. New cabin to enjoy, new boats, new water, new landscape, and just promise me WALLEYE’S and I’m ready to roll. Dave’s 10 minute orientation of the camp included, camp amenities, meal times, Stormer/ Kirkness lake description, marked hot spots, and obstacles to avoid. Now we are ready to go, no excuses, we need to catch those walleyes.

“Roughing it” is not the goal on this trip with first class drive-in American plan operation at Stormer Lake Lodge. About as remote as a Drive-in Camp that exists, we literally drove until the road ends in Ontario…wow this is how I like it.

At first, new water feels intimidating, but Stormer and Kirkness Lakes offer the feel of smaller water while providing ample room to roam. Stormer Lake leads into Kirkness Lake via a ½ mile navigable channel. Kirkness is known for its numbers of

walleye, while Stormer turns in the trophies. By day two we zipped around the water pointing out the walleye hotspots by name. Yes, Dave and Linda were telling the truth, walleye fishing like I’ve never experience at a drive-in camp or for that matter most fly-in camps. Dave’s hotspots were incredible, fishing deep lake humps in late July proved awesome! We bottom bounced and jigged 25-40’ of water on the windward side of reefs with huge success. Walleyes tend to hang tight and in large schools on Kirkness. At one reef I dropped a marker buoy in 34’ of water and proceeded to yank over 40 walleyes in a short period of time from a 10’ diameter area by vertical jigging. Wow, I just can’t

stop reliving that afternoon in my head. Shelly and Steve bounced around the reefs, sometimes we fished side by side and at other times we explored the water separately. Quick introduction to Canadian fishing and Shelly was on her way to veteran Canadian fisherwoman status. It was awesome to watch her catch that first walleye and the excitement that her first 17” walleye brings. To me a 17” walleye means one thing…shore lunch! Jessica and I decided to tangle with the walleyes in Stormer one afternoon on Dave’s recommendation that morning over coffee. “Stormer is known to produce trophies, but numbers will be lower,” Dave mentioned as we discussed the days fishing plan. So, all afternoon we pounded the sand bar on Stormer Lake. Working the weed edge down to 22’ while managing the wind, produced a few smaller walleyes. Jessica struck first in to a solid bigger fish. Battle time! Spinning the boat and banking into the deeper water proved effective and exciting. Deep long runs ended boat side when I slid the net under a walleye that stretched the tape to 27”. Quick photo session and the big white tipped tail disappeared into the depths of Stormer Lake. Ok, was it a fluke or can we find another trophy sized fish? Well, slowly drifting over the sand bar tip in 12-14’ of water proved Dave’s scouting report to be true. Not to be out done by Jessica, I was able to pose for photos with my very own 27” walleye. Love when a plan comes together! Finding walleye means you’ll also find Northern Pike preying on walleye schools. This jackpot of walleye meant the pike are feasting, providing rod bending pike battles. Steve Czaplinski had the fight of his life, pulling in a 35” Pike on his ultralight. Ten minutes of pure adrenaline excitement, which ended with a personal best 35” pike in the photo. We managed to pick off a few nice Pike in the mid 30’s over the course of the week, but the best story belongs to a fellow lodge guest. I handed out 2018 All-Canada Show Dardevle collector lures over dinner one night, and it produced the largest Pike of the week…42” giant gator. Ok, there was that one 30-minute period we struggled, but I blame rain, wind, and cold that slammed us that morning. We battled, full out rain gear, with 2-3’ rollers. Mother Nature provided the so called “Walleye Chop” on steroids. We proceeded to release many “eater” walleye’s waiting for the last 30 minutes to pick up our shore lunch fish, well that was a mistake. One fish short is where Jessica and I found ourselves at 11:30am. “Just head back, I’ll eat one less fillet today” Jessica stated. Oh no, not on my watch. With walleye requested for shore lunch, 3 is what we’ll find. Mother Nature thought she had a victory, but we dropped the hammer on the 3rd walleye at the noon bell. We win! Normally the fish fry would be out on the lake but with that

American Plan!

day’s weather, Dave & Linda decided to do it at the lodge. Cabin fire in July? Steve stoked the woodstove as we peeled off the wet layers. Yes, nothing better than dry clothes and a glowing wood fire in the cabin. Relaxing time waiting for our shore lunch, or should I say lodge fish fry. How can you beat really fresh walleye, 30 minutes from lake to belly! No matter the surroundings, fresh walleye reigns supreme in the hierarchy of food. Shore lunch may be my favorite two words spoken in Canadian language. Oh, yeah, did I mention Dave and Linda even do shore-lunch complete with all the fixings? I do feel guilty every time someone requires me to just sit and enjoy a Labatt Blue and watch them clean fish, deep fry golden fillets, and even clean up! No matter how many times I’ve sat on a rock and enjoyed fresh walleye, it never gets old. Only one complaint, I was over served with food. Beware if you book with Stormer Lake Lodge you’ll have to fend off a full breakfast, followed by shorelunch 4 hours later, and huge full course dinner including salad bar and dessert at 6pm. I wish you luck! We survived, but don’t count on the fresh air and fishing exercise to drop a few pounds, quite the opposite. Good thing camp is situated with ample walking space as after dinner walks were in order each night. Part of the fun of an American Plan trip is meeting all the wonderful lodge guests sharing in the adventure. It is always exciting to see photos and hear stories in the lodge at the end of a great day of fishing. From a multigenerational family with a die-hard teenage fisherman, a corporate group from the east coast, a young couple with their aunt and uncle, and two longtime friends - we met some great people. Our dinner companions, Jerry and John had many fun stories to share after each day of Stormer and Kirkness adventures!

Many in camp took advantage of “after dinner fishing.” But really, do you need to catch more than 100 walleyes a day? We relaxed, enjoyed a Labatt Blue on the deck as the sun set on another great day in NW Ontario – Sunset Country. Whether you’re a Canadian veteran or a rookie looking to chase your first Canadian adventure I highly recommend going American Plan - relax, and immerse yourself in the fishing while the lodge staff look after your every need. Keep your options open, take a group of friends, make it a couples trip, or even take the family…new Canadian fishing adventures are calling.

TALE OF TWO ADVENTURES

AllCanada.com

By: Kevin Cegielski

It’s normal to have a “bucket list”.

Most folks have one. Mine, in particular, is overflowing with Canadian Lodge trips. Last summer I was fortunate to scratch Anderson’s Lodge and Outposts near Sioux Lookout, Ontario off my long bucket list. This was “A Tale of Two Adventures” at Anderson’s Lodge – the 1st being a Fly-In Package of three days of outpost living on Lac Seul, followed by three days on the American Plan Bowrider Package that included their guided 21’ custom built Stanley Bowrider boats. Let’s go boys! Years of roaming the All-Canada Show floor researching lodges, always led me toward Anderson’s Lodge and Outposts booth. Jackie Duhamel and Jody Morin own and operate a firstclass drive-in American Plan lodge just south of Sioux Lookout along with multiple fly-in outposts on Lac Seul. Four guys, four ideas of the perfect Canadian fishing trip, no problem. Three long time friends joined in the fun: Steve Cegielski, Scott Pautz and Lief Blom. Anderson’s Outpost + Bowrider package was perfectly designed to make all our fishing personalities happy with three days at an outpost followed by three days of a full service deluxe American Plan. Unloading the truck as the de Havilland Beaver float plane glided up to the dock meant it was “go time”. No matter how many times I board a float plane, it never gets old. The floatplane is getting me off the grid, where my cell phone is nothing more than a $700 camera. Experiencing the scenery at 1000’ altitude is hard to explain to someone who has never seen it. Northwest Ontario has many amazing fisheries, and Lac Seul is one of those without a doubt. I’m always intrigued with remote fly-in cabins. How on Earth can these cabins and fish cleaning houses be so nice? With the updated and modern amenities

Tuktegweik Bay Outpost bound!

Anderson’s Lodge offering Outpost and American Plan package in one.

I am not sure if the Anderson’s Lodge Outpost cabins are the norm, but this was a beautiful cabin in the middle of the pristine wilderness - paradise! The logistics and effort to construct outpost facilities is almost unimaginable. No people, supplies, or tools, go in or out without a boat or plane. I complain about hauling lumber in my truck from the store to fix my deck. Who’s hungry? Outpost living means earning your meals one fish at a time. Outpost weight restrictions tasked the group to be creative in meal planning with limited supplies, but I enjoy the challenge. As we were unpacking my stomach growled and I barked out, “Where’s the food guys?” Steve pointed to the water saying, “ It’s still swimming.” We did bring the basics to support our main ingredient Walleye! I found the 18-gallon tote marked “food.” As I sorted through the box, I found fish breading, oil, a few peppers, potatoes, seasoning salt, paper

plates, more fish breading, and even more fish breading. Catching lunch was our only option. Perfect planning, we had plenty of fish breading, and plenty of ice cold Labatt Blue beer. Guys can survive on that combo for a few days with minimal health issues. Alright then - let’s get to work boys, I’m hungry! Who are we kidding? Outpost fishing on Lac Seul isn’t challenging; fishing quickly turns into catching. “Eater” walleyes are important to the evening recipe, but trophy hunting is also pretty high on the list. Instead of waiting days to scout the water for trophies, I checked the trophy box in the first few minutes. Less than 10 minutes on the water, I hooked into what I knew was a dandy. Scott scrambled to help, but I said, “Slow down brother, you have plenty of time.” Fifteen minutes into the fight, we realized the net wasn’t in the boat! The 39 inch pike surfaced a few times to show us what we were up against. Knowing this pike had to be manhandled into the boat, we discussed the location of the treble hooks piercing the jaw bone, and Scott was ready to do hand-to-tooth combat with the pike on his turf. I pitched the boat around, so we could land the fish on my side. The pike left a toothy slash across Scott’s finger as a reminder of who’s boss (sorry Scott). We took some pictures and a bit of video, then watched the nearly 20lb gator disappear into the stained Lac Seul depths. Time to refocus on lunch. Steve and Lief caught half our lunch, while Scott and I battled the big gator. We chased trophies around Lac Seul, bouncing from point to point and a few lake humps, but Lief found our go-to “lunch fish” point. Lief mastered the slow wind-blown troll picking off “eater” walleye every

pass. Thanks Lief, for buying lunch most days. Fishing drives the adventure, but the evening around camp is also a key part of the experience. I recall one evening in particular. While docking the boat for the night, an ice-cold Blue appeared on the dock as if delivered by an angel. It was no angel, just Lief prioritizing the evening tasks at hand. Cleaning fish is work, but another great opportunity to relive the day’s adventure. I’m a teamwork kind-of-guy, so everyone had their evening chores, and we worked like a well-oiled machine. Two guys filleting in the screened-in fish house, one guy washing fillets, and one chef prepping the breading and oil. A flawless operation in every way for every meal. This was not our first rodeo though! Most outpost camps do not offer marine electronics in the boats. It’s simply too difficult to keep them working properly. So this year, Steve and I treated ourselves to high-end sonar units with GPS features. We converted the permanent style mounting units into portable packs, powered by a small 12 volt batteries. Quality electronics is a game changer for any remote fishing adventure! Having the right rods, reels, tackle, and camp equipment makes your adventure all you dreamed. Normally, sadness sets in as I’m loading the floatplane at the end of an adventure…but not this time! Our fishing trip was only half over. The float plane ride out was merely a ride to main camp for an entirely new style of adventure. As you may have guessed, I prefer to manage a DIY fishing trip. From lodge research, to cooking, and even cleaning fish, it’s all about conquering nature and learning along the way. In addition, I always drive the boat. Not just most of the time. ALL OF THE TIME. Scott offered to drive the boat one day, but my quick reply was simple, “You’d have to pull my cold, dead hand off the tiller.” So, our next half of this adventure was going to be outside my comfort zone, but right squarely in the wheelhouse of many travelers visiting north of the border - American Plan style amenities with fully-guided fishing. After a brief scuffle on the dock, I did agree to let our guide drive the boat. It was not easy at first. I wasn’t sure what to even do with my left hand. If you are a boat driver with a tiller, you completely understand. Our guide, Shawn, quickly put us on fish - and plenty of them. This was no ordinary guided fishing trip; we fished together as a group in their Stanley Bowrider boat, a custom built 21’ “fishing tank.” It was awesome to share the days fishing not only with a partner, but great to a have all 4 guys in the same boat sharing laughs and high fives as we scored on quality ‘eyes. We traveled quickly spot-to-spot, and found fish almost everywhere. Guided trips require little planning. Grab a rod, a handful of tackle and pack your bag - Ready, set, go! These Bowrider boats brought camaraderie of the

entire group all day, every day. There was no need to catch up over dinner; we all lived the memories together. Guided trips could also be a great option for a family - less work means more time to build memories, and of course more time to fish.

Walleye was the target species for our adventure, but we did run into Pike, Bass, and even a short tangle with a Muskie for Steve. While catching walleyes on day three, Scott set the hook on what we presumed was another walleye…but this was no walleye. Quick erratic runs spelled Smallmouth Bass. The “never give up bass mentality” dominated his walleye rod. Wow those fish have power! Big bass hitting the net never gets old, the football-like 5 pounder was celebrated and documented with a photo!

Ok, even I’ll admit 3 days of fish heavy meals, and I was ready for a new menu. Anderson’s Lodge didn’t disappoint. A full breakfast made-to-order started our day, and we ended our day on the water by dining on Prime Rib in the lodge’s restaurant Foxys’. Relaxing, relaxing, can you say relaxing?! Back to my DIY mentality, I’m happy to report I’ve grown as a fisherman and learned to fish with 2 hands as well. A win for me! To be honest, I did let the guide bait my hook a few times and take off my fish. That’s pretty nice! (I don’t tell my buddies back home about this, but it’s true.) Much like the float plane ride, I could experience a thousand shore lunches and enjoy every one. Each shoreline offers unique terrain with spectacular scenery. Our guide was a boat captain, a fishing guide, and a chef. For two shore lunches in a row the fillets and trimmings were cooked perfectly. I would like to say I could do better, but that’s really not the truth. You would think back-to-back days of eating pan fried golden brown fresh Walleye would get boring, but it never does. Even after day four, my 39” pike was dominating our friendly big fish wager and trust me, everyone was reminded daily – “Pike champion!” After every quality fish caught, I had a smart comment ready to go! Day three, I caught a 27” walleye. Of course, more of the same “man chatter.” Oh no!, then Scott and Lief both popped 27” Lac Seul walleyes, now with a 3 way tie the tension rose on every hook set. Our unofficial – official measuring led to questioning…or should I say doubting? “I didn’t pinch the tail, or close the mouth on mine” Scott mentioned on day four. His sly way of saying his was a 27”+ walleye? Reality is that we all caught quality fish over and over, so we are all fishing winners! But we must have a fish champion - no participation awards in Canada!

Canada is a very special place, with a remoteness you can only understand first hand. The perfect place to reset your mind and body. Catch your “trophy”; size is in the eye of the beholder. One trip to Canada and your bucket list will be littered with Canadian lodges just like my bucket list, guaranteed. Spread your Canadian wings, and bring your family or friends along. It will take a lifetime to create “trophy” memories. Start now at the All Canada Show, a great resource for researching your next adventure.

CANADIAN WHITETAIL ADVENTURE

By: Shane Deiter

Do you dream of hunting big whitetail deer? We do, and the anticipation

of heading to Canada for a hunt was growing as I dreamt of shooting a majestic deer from this region. Northwestern Ontario has immense tracts of boreal forest inhabited by whitetail deer. If you are a big game hunter, the bucks in this country are large, heavy-bodied animals with large antlers. It is not uncommon to harvest a 300-pound animal from the vast wilderness. If that sounds intriguing, then let me tell you about our hunt last fall. As avid whitetail hunters, All-Canada co-owner Scott Pautz and I were excited when Steve Smith of Sunset Country Adventures mentioned the opportunity to hunt with him in November. Located in Northwest Ontario, the landscape here is nothing short of magnificent and is known for big whitetails. Sunset Country Adventures, near Vermilion Bay, is situated on the beautiful Indian Lake Chain with endless miles of outstanding deer habitat. Operated by Steve and his wife Erin, the fishing and hunting lodge was an ideal place, right in the heart of deer country. As we headed to Canada, our conversation was dominated by the talk of deer hunting, the rut, and of course the thought of one or both of us harvesting a deer. Like most hunters we always envision what the hunt will be like, playing out the scenarios in our minds - the mystery of hunting somewhere new, what the weather will be like, and how many deer we will see. It had been 18 years since the last time

The wait and hunt!

Shane Deiter with Canadian whitetail success!

I had hunted in Ontario, and the excitement level was rising as we drew closer to our destination. Not only was the hunt on my mind, but the thought of a week-long vacation in Canada with a good friend and the escape from a busy lifestyle was refreshing. Crossing the Canadian border, we had a smooth check-in to declare our firearms and then we were off for just 2 more hours of travel before arriving in Vermilion Bay. Upon our arrival, a quick stop at a local sport shop to purchase our deer hunting licenses and then we were off to camp. With license in hand, we headed to Sunset Country to meet Steve. Once there, Steve took us to our cabin with a beautiful view of the lake. The cabin was rustic and comfortably supplied with everything needed for a Housekeeping Plan with a deck outside and a grill, great for cooking supper after a long hunt. There was also plenty of space to lay out all of our hunting gear and clothing. We quickly unpacked the truck, and prepared for a hunt that afternoon. One of the dilemmas a hunter faces is the decision of where to sit. So, after reviewing trail camera photos, studying some of the deer, and discussing stand locations, we formulated a game plan for an evening hunt. The weather forecast for the week ahead promised to be a great for hunting. Cold temperatures and snow were setting up to be ideal for good deer movement. The look ahead showed temperatures

dropping to the single digits at night. That, coupled with the timing of the “deer rut”, was a great scenario. As I settled into my stand for the first hunt, I surveyed the landscape. The spot was high on a power line which provided open shots and the ability to see a long distance. With the forest being so thick, this type of spot was favorable to shot opportunities if a deer presented itself. I watched intently as the hours went by hoping to see movement of a deer, but with the evening falling the deer did not cooperate. Before I knew it, the daylight had slipped away. Scott had an eventful first sit, seeing several deer at close range – including passing on an opportunity to take a buck on day 1. Waiting for that ever-elusive giant always involves a gamble! One thing that we had to tell ourselves as Wisconsin hunters is that this is such great and vast country, that deer sightings may not be as plentiful as what we are used to back home. This is often why when hunting in Canada, all-day hunts increase the odds of seeing the elusive whitetail. Everyone would like to sit in a stand for about 2 hours and have it all come together, but in this game perseverance is often the key to a successful hunt. Northwest Ontario is known for big whitetail deer, which makes it a popular destination for hunters. There is always a chance for a true world class

trophy to come from this region, with many record book animals taken here. With a habitat of endless forest tracts, deer can thrive and grow to maturity. The “Dryden Buck” still stands as one of the largest deer ever recorded in Ontario scoring near 200. As we laid out our plan of attack for the next day, Scott and I elected to sit in the same spots. We prepared to sit all day, making lunches to take with us in the stand. The plan was for Scott to drop me off at my stand in the morning, and pick me up after dark. It sounded simple, but sitting there for eleven hours takes some extra mind preparation. Now if you have never sat all day in a deer stand, let me tell you, your mind starts to wander now and then. The peaceful tranquility of the forest was almost eerie at times, with little to no wind or noise from cars and trucks barreling down the road - just the sounds of the forest. As the day progressed, different scenarios would run through my mind about how the shot would happen when the opportunity arose. But with the day slowly waning, only a lone doe appeared just before dark. With the anticipation of a buck to be following, I glassed the area steadily only to have darkness fall before that would happen. Back at camp, we discussed the day’s activity and the deer we saw with Steve. Offering many different stand locations at Sunset Country, Steve suggested we try a different location for the morning hunt. Scott was having second thoughts on a stand move as his current location was producing good deer sightings, but elected to go with the change of view. After the morning sit did not result in the deer we were hoping for, we regrouped and I decided to head back to the same stand I had sat in the day before. With several decent bucks on camera, I knew it was only a matter of time before one of them would slip and show his face. That evening as I sat, everything felt right. The wind was perfect for the stand, and activity was alive in the woods with birds and squirrels. This is often a good indicator to me that deer will be on the move as well. With about a half hour of daylight left, a doe popped out of the wood line and was making her way in my direction. As I watched her movement, another deer caught my eye; hot on her trail was a buck! After taking a quick look with the binoculars, I knew this deer from pictures that Steve had gathered from his cameras. As the buck closed the distance, my heart began to race with the anticipation of getting a crack at this deer. As he made his way toward me many thoughts flooded my mind. The deer came to a stop, standing there just facing me for what seemed like an eternity. Finally, he presented an opportunity, I settled the crosshairs on his chest and I squeezed the trigger. As the shot rang out in the still wilderness, I saw him fall in his tracks. With my adrenaline running high and heart pounding, I realized that it had all come together and I was just

lucky enough to harvest a great Canadian whitetail with Sunset Country Adventures! As Steve picked me up from my hunt that evening, I told him of my success, and he was ecstatic. As a hunting guide, he prides himself on trying to provide an opportunity for every client. He shortly realized that recovering this animal was not going to be an easy task, but no worries, he made provisions to recover the animal with the help of some local “muscle”. Randy Gushulak is a local fishing and hunting guide, and after meeting Randy it was very clear by his stature that we would not have any issues getting this deer from the Canadian bush. After some photos and a long drag, we were back at camp celebrating and telling the story of how it all went down. Sometimes it feels surreal when you dream about shooting a great deer and it finally happens. What a Day! It was exciting and I was still elated as the night came to a close. The rest of the week was spent just relaxing. I processed the deer, watched the lake in front of the lodge freeze before my eyes, and hung out with the camp dog “Luna”, who I found to be very wily at exploiting the patrons of the camp for some attention and treats. The time flew by fast, and too soon we realized that our trip was coming to an end. While Scott was not fortunate enough to tag the giant he was looking for, he also had a great hunt just being able to come and experience what this area has to offer. Opportunities were presented, but holding out for the deer of a lifetime is a choice you need to be comfortable with before setting out. Often times we gauge a hunt as successful only if we bag a deer or whatever animal we are pursuing, but there are so many other things that are great that can define whether a hunt was truly successful. As I reflect on this trip, I can say that I feel very

fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience a deer hunt in Canada. There is something special about spending time with friends and enjoying the great wilderness that Canada has to offer. It is always exciting to go to new places and hunt different areas. This was a hunt that will not be soon forgotten and made a lasting memory.
