MANITOBA BOUND

By: Steve Cegielski

Are you dreaming of a Canadian fishing adventure? How about world class

Northern Pike, Walleye, Lake Trout and the elusive wild Brook Trout? Sounds like Manitoba is calling. Remote Manitoba wilderness that anglers dream about is easily accessible to the casual fisherman on a tight schedule. Interested yet? Well, no problem we’ve got you covered. God’s Lake, Manitoba is here to satisfy even the most veteran angler’s appetite. So, hang on as I lay out our past summers exhilarating adventure to Elk Island Lodge. As co-owner of the All-Canada Show, I’ve known Greg Dick from Elk Island Lodge for almost 20 years. Greg comes from a strong family history in the lodge business, so his wisdom in the lodge industry is way beyond his years. While chatting at the 2017 All-Canada Show, Greg mentioned that we should join them next summer at the lodge. So, Scott Pautz – co-owner of the All-Canada Show and I leapt at the opportunity to explore God’s Lake, Manitoba – Elk Island Lodge style!

Elk Island Lodge some 350 miles North of Winnipeg, MB might seem like a daunting travel task, but that’s where Greg and Lindsie Dick, owners / operators of Elk Island Lodge take over. Their well-oiled travel machine defines the whole operation. No, Greg hasn’t invented time travel (he might be working on that as we speak), but for now, get your group to the Winnipeg International airport and you’ll be lifted away to fishing paradise. You’ll definitely enjoy the non-stop flight to Elk Island Lodge’s air stirp, crazy! You’ll be served drinks and lunch on a commercial plane, and be fishing the next hour on God’s Lake.

Elk Island Lodge Guide Tomaz with a native wild Brook Trout.

Hold on this is where the fishing starts, only hours into your Canadian adventure. Vast God’s Lake, Manitoba couldn’t possibly be fished in a lifetime of adventures, but that’s what keeps fishermen returning each year. Thoughts of the unknown honey hole behind the next island will whet your appetite for your next adventure. Four days of uninterrupted fishing will wear out the average fisherman, better pace yourself so you have enough in the tank when you hook that monster on day 4. For those die-hard veteran anglers, or should I say lucky guests, Elk Island Lodge accommodates with an 8- day package to allow you to slow down and let the fish come to you! Our approach was, 4 species to chase, 4 days of fishing, now that’s a plan coming together if you follow my logic. Many guests like to target one specific species, but Scott and I wanted to experience all that God’s Lake has to offer. Our guide was Tomaz Burlaga, native to Poland, was up to the challenge, with a strong desire to put clients on fish. Tomaz’s fishing passion just explodes into the boat, his excitement showed on a “boat side” Manitoba Master Angler fish.

Toothy Gators of the North: God’s lake offers 3 distinct Pike fishing options: early spring shallow bay sight fishing, mid-summer transition to weed beds, and late summer full weed bed growth. Each fisherman takes pleasure with a certain technique, sight fishing shallow bays after spawn or top water over huge weed beds. Our late July adventure was perfect, we found pike scattered everywhere. Transition time, weed beds were just

forming, and some held huge numbers of trophy pike while others were vacant of Pike. Find the right weeds, and you found a jackpot of Pike action. And big pike still lurked in the shallows, now that’s high intense action around every corner. With crystal clear God’s Lake water, sight down to 15’ isn’t uncommon. Wow, what a sight to behold, 3-4 or sometimes up to 6 pike at a time would follow up a bait. Two guys working two styles of baits, while Tomaz our guide pointed out target fish to chase. Sometimes hours would fly by with Pike follows continuously boat side. Multiple doubles on quality Pike were celebrated with high-fives! You know you’re in Pike paradise when you find yourself

shaking off or pulling baits away from low 30” fish. Time flies when you’re having Pike fun.

Shorelunch delicacy – Walleye Scott and I both target Walleye every chance we get. For many reasons, but high on the list is that a delicious shore-lunch just wouldn’t be the same without a few Walleye fillets. Don’t get me wrong, Walleye might be our number one go to shore-lunch cuisine, but battling an “eye” to the surface is how Canada fishing was built for me. Chasing Walleyes of God’s lake comes in 2 techniques –jJigging or trolling crankbaits. We found them around structure in 6-12ft of water, easy jigging, now that’s fun. At times Tomaz took us up river, fishing strong current by front trolling cranks with continuous quality fish action. Walleyes were a problem some days, our problem was the size – too large to eat for shore-lunch. Whoa, shore-lunch in jeopardy? Never fear, Tomaz came through every day, eater Walleye boated. Shore lunch complete, life is good at Elk Island Lodge.

Deep Lunkers – Lake Trout Lake Trout are a “Huge” reason to visit Elk Island Lodge. Mid-summer Lake trout of God’s Lake were hovering over large lake basins.…100-160’ of water. Lakers were suspended somewhere in the middle, chasing bait fish toward the surface at times. Graphs were speckled with Trout, time to catch one. I’m not claiming knowledge or experience with these beasts, and when I say beasts I mean mid 40’s or length and mid 40’s for weight is a realistic potential, with larger Trout lurking! Chasing Lake Trout of this size should be a bucket list item for all anglers. No matter your experience, Elk Island Lodge guides are there to teach and educate, and I guarantee you’ll be hooked literally when a giant Laker slams your 2oz white tube jig in 100’ of water. We spent a few hours each day jigging large 2-3oz jigs with soft plastics searching for the giant. After my first hit, which I thought was a giant, I was hooked. That first Laker was a respectable 28” fish, wow they bring fight to the game. I can’t image the battle a mid-40’s Laker brings to the table, but that’s what will drive me back to God’s Lake someday.

Native Wild Brook Trout While possible, it’s not common to find native Wild Brook Trout in a complete wilderness setting in the lower 48 US states. Greg sent us north one day to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity to fish for the Brook Trout beauties. An epic 30 minute floatplane ride off God’s Lake onto the God’s River, some of the wildest river landscape I’ve ever seen. Landscape untouched for thousands of years in its natural beauty and glory. Wow, as if just being there wasn’t enough, now we get to fish for native Wild Brook Trout on their home turf. Challenging is a good word to use. At first the current and

Steve Cegielski (left), Elk Island Lodge Owner and Operator Greg Dick, Guide Tomaz, and Scott Pautz. Day flight out to the God’s River for native wild Brook Trout.

technique challenged my fishing experience, and Scott definitely worked the bait and the river better by his results. But I did manage to fool a few Brookies. Casting small spoons and Rapalas into small eddies looking for hidden Brook Trout looking to feed. Accurate casting skills proved necessary, along with listening to Tomaz on targeting certain types of current. Pound for pound I do believe the Brook Trout gives you a battle for the ages. Tomaz’s excellent boat handling skills made all the difference, putting the boat in fishable areas while directing our every cast….it worked, we boated 17 Brookies 3 of which were Master Anglers. If your passion is Brook Trout, all I can say is go, go now to God’s River! Now back to the shore-lunch. Greg didn’t tell us Tomaz was a master chef. Tomaz’s technique and skill showed, he had everything timed out to perfection. Open fire built, time to clean the fish. Once fire was up to temp, his cooking game kicked into gear. Again, just like the Elk Island Lodge approach, Tomaz was efficient and produced quality. Almost too fast a few days, I didn’t get to enjoy that 2nd Labatt Blue before lunch was served. I even picked up a few recipe tips that I’ll attempt to create in following Canadian adventures…..yum! All this talk about fish and shore-lunch, and I simply skipped over the luxury accommodations, executive cuisine, and first-rate staff. Elk Island is first and foremost a fishing camp, here to cater to your every fishing need, but you can’t fish 24 hours a day. So, why not enjoy the finer things in life along the way? Chef catered meals and a fully stocked bar left us satisfied each night while we bantered with all the guests on the days fishing lore in the authentic log lodge before retiring to our own personal

cabin overlooking the lake. Some guests desire to fish stretched into the evening after dinner, while others casually relaxed on the lodge deck either in the sauna, hot tub or just lounging with a beverage in hand enjoying the sunsets. To each their own, vacation has numerous meanings, and Elk Island Lodge doesn’t disappoint.

KIDS QUEST ON LAKE OF THE WOODS By: Scott Pautz

One of the most rewarding

fishing trips I have ever experienced was this past summer. The All-Canada Show gathered up a bunch of dads and their children and headed north to Ontario, Canada on a fishing adventure. A guiding vision for my partner Steve Cegielski and myself, when taking over The All Canada Show, was to encourage the involvement of youth in fishing, hunting, and the outdoors. Kids 17 and under always get into the AllCanada Show for free; “Bring them along!” as we say. The next level of commitment to this mission was getting these kids up to Canada. Our trip would consist of five youngsters (11-13, four boys and a girl), four oldsters (dads) and a lot of energy! First was finding the perfect location; we needed a lodge and a lake that would offer multiple species and lots of area for us to spread out. These kids wanted to jig walleye, chase muskie, cast for smallmouth bass, and maybe fish for a little white gold (Perch!). They were eager, so it was clear we needed to offer plenty of fishing options on this trip. After speaking with Todd Hacault, owner and operator at Tamarack Island Wilderness Lodge on Lake of the Woods, I realized we had found our fit! Todd and his wife Kim have kids of their own who work every day, all summer long for this family-run lodge. Their passion and work ethic was a great example for our own children to witness. While Tamarack Island Wilderness Lodge is located on the premier muskie waters in the world, it had so much more to offer in fishing opportunities. A massive body of water (covering almost 1,700 square miles) with endless bays and islands; this wonderland will keep you looking around the next corner for a new adventure! Since we were heading to an island lodge, this trip

started with a boat launch in Morson, Ontario - a short 1 hour drive from the Minnesota border crossing in Baudette. Next, a scenic thirty minute cruise through the waters of Lake of the Woods to Tamarack Island and we had arrived. As the sun rose over the glassy Lake of the Woods water that first morning, the cabin was jumping early. Breakfast looked like a scene from the Walton’s. This was a housekeeping trip, meaning we were going to be experiencing it all…crash or burn it was on. Gathering equipment and getting this crew into boats was no small chore, but we did it... and we were off! I am not saying it was perfect (far from it), but we had 4 boats and motors running, life jackets on everyone, and fishing rods. The rest would be easy; It’s Canadian fishing! Walleye in the morning! My first thought after

breakfast is always lunch... so time to go find Walter and a few of his friends for a shore lunch date and oil swim. I knew the walleye action on Lake of the Woods would be outstanding, but pressure was on to get into fish early. Every dad had a kid or two in the boat with a smile when we left the dock, so task one was to keep that smile there. We needed to find some structure (maybe off a windblown point), get the jig heads down, and start the walleye attack. Sure enough, they were there and they were aggressive. We carefully selected a couple of candidates for our lunch rendezvous! The morning rolled on with a plethora of misses, scooping of walleyes, lots of chatter, and some great picture snapping. On a trip like this it is most important to sit back, relax and let it happen. As I mentioned earlier, it is Canada; we will get fish! Todd’s equipment on these 16’ boats made the task at hand so much easier. I have never fished with such quality fishing locators and electric trolling motors. Being able to precisely move the boat while watching the structure on my screen was a big factor in our success. Top notch for sure! Well it was time: Shore Lunch. Not only a time to savor some walleye fillets that were minutes old but a time for the kids to get out of the boat to explore Canadian shoreline… and to be kids! As all four boats pulled into a random island, stringers were filled with walleyes and perch, smiles were plenty, and it looked like we had a good start!

One activity that always seems to be a hit, of all things, is shoreline fishing at shore lunch. Apparently 10 hours of fishing is not enough? Day

one, everyone was still eager to find that trophy to haul in. We no more than had the fire crackling and the screaming had already begun. Gary Nelson, dad, and apparently master musky fisherman had just tied into a rather large fish…. Right off shore! Want to talk about a scramble? Where is the net? How big is it? What is it? It was a muskie… and a great one at that! Steve went right into fishing mode as he was in and out of a boat with a net like a young professional fisherman in a pro fishing tournament. As he slid the net under this Lake of the Woods trophy the screaming and high fiving had begun. This beauty would stretch the tape at 41”… that’s not too bad for a shore lunch break. Ironically this would play out several other times as the week continued. I thought muskie were “fish of 10,000 casts”? Apparently at Tamarack Island Wilderness Lodge they are the “fish of 50 casts”. As the excitement wound down, bellies were filled and it was time to shove off for the afternoon. The shore lunch bait slinging had spawned the direction for the afternoon. Casting time! Smallmouth bass, northern pike, and muskies were all the focus. What a great opportunity for these kids to learn…. Cast away! With no other boats to worry about, let’s put our sunglasses on for eye protection, fling it and figure it out! I had my own two kids in my boat, so I sat back and was “boat driving guide”. Don’t get me wrong - I love to jig walleyes, but in no way shape or form does it compare to a kid getting a hit on a casting retrieve. To see a smallie, northern or muskie hit these young anglers’ lines was just… Wow! When “hooked up” you could see the pure enjoyment on their faces. With the setting sun it was time to get back to the

lodge and call this day truly great. The kids wound down with some electronic time; we did not require them to leave the electronics at home. Often when we ask kids to experience the great outdoors we state “Leave the electronics behind”, but that is not the times we live in. Electronics are a part of this fast moving world. These kids spent a full day afield fishing, so some electronic wind-down time in the evening was perfectly fine with these four dads. Besides - it gave us a chance to sample a Labatt beer or two…? Later in the week, Todd offered an opportunity to experience a day trip fly-out to an outpost lake via Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts. A float plane would pick our crew up at the dock at 8:00 am and we would have a short 10 minute flight to a Arrow lake. This opportunity we had to try! If you have never flown in a float plane, I would highly recommend the experience. To see the Canadian wilderness from above at a low elevation is spectacular! As we landed on Arrow Lake, I knew the fishing was going to be crazy because it is an outpost lake - and indeed it was. As our four small boats buzzed around this smaller lake it was definitely a unique experience, and a good one at that. On time, the pilot simply swooped in at 4:00 pm and by 4:30 we were home in our cabin. That was simply awesome! As the week rolled on we continued to have fishing success. It was not all smooth; but we told ourselves to take it slow, let them experience, let them learn, and they will remember this for a lifetime! This trip gave up several trophies. In fact, Max Cegielski hooked into both a 28” walleye and a 15” jumbo perch. We had a 40” northern pike landed, and soooo many great smallmouth bass. Gary Nelson

landed several muskies. Each kid caught more fish then they will for a long time. If I had to boil this trip down to one sentence it would be: Take those kids up to Canada! Trips can be economical, and the experience is priceless. Do it as a family, do it as a group of dads taking the kids, give Mom and Dad a break and take the grandkids with you. Someone just take them, connect with them, and create a legacy with the memories. They will tell their kids you took them, and the circle will continue…As it should.

ONTARIO WALLEYE FACTORY

AllCanada.com

By Josh Krull

With our mid-summer trip to Northern Ontario in the making, the days came upon us faster than you can imagine. Anticipation was building as the four of us were gearing up for the trip north. Packing our fishing gear, cameras and essentials in the truck, three Canadian veterans along with one first-timer climbed in and were Canada bound. Our trip would take us to Separation Lake Camps, in the heart of Sunset Country in Northwestern Ontario. During the All-Canada Show 2017, Ron Jordan invited us up to the lodge to explore all that Separation Lake Camps had to offer. The Jordan family has operated Separation Lake Camps for decades and have been long time All-Canada Show exhibitors. It’s time to enjoy this walleye factory first hand. During our overnight journey towards the border, fishing and relaxation dominated our conversation, along with stories of previous trips raised the level of excitement. I was joined in our mission to explore Separation Lake by my brother Matt Krull and two close friends, Joe Fuss, and Matt Hert. Of course, my brother, the “newbie”, had a lot of questions and often doubted tales of the other trips, as any fisherman would. “Soon young buck, you will see,” were the words from the returning three Canadian veterans. As day broke, the Canadian border was near and with a smooth crossing into Canada, we were just a few short hours from our destination. Upon our arrival at Separation Lake Camp landing, fishing and relaxation were mere minutes away due to the camp being a boat-in resort. While waiting for our boat ride, fishermen heading home shared their fish tales from a week of chasing trophies. Some of these guests have been coming for over 15 years! They continued to tell us how every year

they were impressed with the size and quantity of fish, a quality fishery getting even better each year. With the anticipation ramping up even more, we wished them a safe trip home as our boat pulled up to the dock. We unloaded our belongings from the truck and with the help of the camp staff, our items were placed onto a barge. Soon after we were off, and we began taking in the beauty of the landscape and the vast open water. On our way, Lionel, our boat captain, pointed ahead to our cabin on a hill. Excitement came across our faces as we pulled up to the dock and saw our new home for the next week.

the Labatt Blue!

Once on shore we were greeted by the wonderful camp staff who welcomed us and took us to our cabin high on the point. Our cabin was well designed to fit four guys comfortably for the week. It felt like home with just the right amenities to fit our needs. Air conditioning to keep us cool after the warm summer days on the water, cable TV so we can catch a couple quick fishing tips or sporting events, and a refrigerator to keep our beverages cold, especially

The luxury of an American Plan Trip, which includes meals and daily housekeeping, eased our minds of everything but bringing in the next big catch. With a made to order breakfast each morning and an extravagant dinner prepared every evening, nothing fell short of excellent. It didn’t stop there, this trip also provided us with Fred, a very knowledgeable guide. Canadian guides tend to be a first timer’s best friend. They know the structure of the lake and the seasonal patterns of the fish. Baiting your hook and releasing your fish are also helpful to those who may be uncomfortable with those tasks. Above all, watching and helping the guide prepare shore lunch becomes a learning experience in itself. The week ahead promised good weather, great fishing, and quite frankly a week’s vacation from our normal busy lifestyles. Our eyes were set on fishing the pristine waters filled with Walleye, Northern Pike, and Small Mouth Bass. The Canadian walleye was our first choice of fish, based on the stories we heard while entering camp. What fisherman doesn’t have a 30” walleye on their bucket list, right? But we won’t forget about the aggressive Northern Pike or the exciting Smallmouth Bass opportunities Separation Lake offers. Our to-do list was long, we better get started. With the evening falling on our first day and the sun fading in the distance, we relaxed on our deck overlooking Separation Lake. We laid out our plan of attack, fishing partners were decided, and tackle organized for the week. Joe Fuss and Matt Hert, longtime friends and fishing buddies, partnered up in one boat while my brother, Matt Krull, and I would fish together with our guide Fred. With my brother being the Canadian newbie, we felt it would be best if he fished and learned from our guide Fred first hand.

American Plan dinner!

Josh Krull, Matt Krull, Matt Hert, Joe Fuss enjoy a spectacular shore lunch.

As we woke on our first day, the weather was perfect, the breakfast was amazing and the camp staff helped get our fishing gear to the boat. After sending us on our way, we boated out across the lake to find the structure that held walleyes. We had visions of trophy walleye, the kind that test your equipment as they battled boat side, and of course shore lunch fish, lunch time in coming.

Pike on Separation Lake, no trophies today, but we’ll be back to find where they live. Before long it was time to head back to camp. As excitement of day one refused to diminish, we already had a fishing attack plan for day two. Time to relax, clean up for the much anticipated dinner in the lodge followed by an evening of cards and beverages.

As the boat slowly glided across the water to our first stop, you could see the smiles come across everyone’s face as we anxiously waited to drop our first lures in the water. With an “Okay boys” from our guide Fred, our jigs were in the water and the race for the first fish was on. Within just a few jigs of my minnow, an excited “Fish On!” echoed across the water. As I was reeling in what I thought was the first fish of the trip, I turned to the see the boys each reeling in one of their own. Oh, this is going to be a fun day, action right out of the gate. In no time we had enough fish in our live well for the days shore lunch. Now it’s time to switch spots to find that trophy walleye. With lunch approaching, finding the perfect shore lunch location was our next priority. We drifted up to a nice shady point on an island where shade was plentiful and the wind was calm. Wood for our campfire was scarce, so Fred took the boat to a nearby beaver hut and gathered enough dry wood to make our lunch. Shore lunch is a must have when fishing in Canada. It is truly an experience to get to catch your own fish, fillet them on shore, and cook them over an open fire with potatoes and beans. With the fish filleted and the potatoes frying, we soon were able to fill our bellies with the mornings catch. Wow, I’ve got to try that recipe at home, but I know it’s hard to replicate the fresh air and the pine needle seasoning at home. After a push off the rock, we were soon back fishing for an afternoon of catch and release. We tested the

Chasing Separation Walleye consumed most of our time on the water, but Northern Pike were lurking around the weed beds stealing out baits. Northern Pike became our target fish as the week progressed. As multiple double and triple hook ups happened, we challenged each other with a little side betting on the largest Pike for the week. Wagers make every guy fish harder; these Pike were in trouble now. Nothing like the smash of a Pike hitting your bait, wow they do battle. My big pike for the week almost ripped the pole out of my hands when attacking my lure. What a battle, I had my trophy Pike! Mid30’s might not be a trophy for some fisherman, but that’s my largest Pike to date. I enjoyed every second of the battle to the boat. Pike fishing is now in my blood, I’ll be back to fight another day…watch out Canadian Northern Pike! Separation Lake is connected to multiple other lakes in a large river system, with more water than you can fish in a week. The continuous flow of current helps add oxygen to the lake and keeps the water temps more consistent, allowing the fish to stay shallower on those hot summer days. This in itself, makes fishing unique from other lakes. Our daily fishing journey took us to a new area every day, including the river rapids, mid-lake reefs, rocky points, and weed beds to fish different lake structure. During our trip we had to learn many new techniques as we searched for the larger fish. My best tip for any “newbie” would be to listen to your guide, trust your guide!

The week went by fast as every day was a new experience and challenge. Too soon we came to realize our trip was coming to its end. The last evening was spent reliving the weeks fishing experience with each other and many of the camp staff. With many thanks exchanged among each other, sadly it was time to pack and get a good night’s rest for the trip home. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to fish Canada on multiple trips. They have taken me to different areas and lodges over the years. I can honestly say, there is something special about spending time with great friends and family while fishing in Canada that you just can’t get at home. Combining the wilderness, fish, friends, and good food makes for memories of a lifetime created in Canada. So when you’re planning your next guys trip or family vacation, don’t forget Canada, our close neighbor to the north…. Fish On!
