Patterns and Colours IN TRADITIONAL LITHUANIAN DESIGNS
Patterns are symbols combined in a sequence. In ancient times, the patterns were used to pass information using these symbols. Each symbol had its own meaning. From generation to generation the patterns were improved becoming more artistic and the meaning of these symbols becomes lost.
Here are some of the most ancient Lithuanian symbols.
DOT - the beginning, the origin, the unit.
RHOMBUS - activity symbol. It is widely used in Lithuanian national sashes and has many meanings: earth, sun, day, wreath, fire.
CIRCLE – symbol of the sun, sometimes surrounded by rays. It also means fire, perfection, eternity and fidelity.
HEXAGONAL STAR - a symbol of the sun. It is one of the main symbols in Lithuanian crafts and one of the oldest sun and light symbols in the world.
SWASTIKA - a dynamic symbol of Thunder God, fire, force, movement, happiness, light and goodness. Swastika was the symbol of a supreme power. This symbol is typical in Lithuanian patterns.

GREEN - natural beauty, freedom and hope
RED - land, courage, spilt blood for the homeland
