Welcome to our November news!

Over the year members from across the school teaching team will have the chance to share with you some of the work they have been doing in their year groups. It has been a wonderful start to the new school term in Year 3. Our autumn term topics include: The Stone Age, the UK, Volcanoes in Humanities and Dark and Light for Science. For The Stone Age we created Palaeolithic cave paintings based on those found in Lascaux. We also studied Stone Age life and learnt about Skara Brae. Portals to the Past visited school for our Stone Age Day and the children had a fantastic day filled with many activities. They even got to dress up as Stone Age people! In Geography we learnt about the different cities in the UK and also got to make and explode volcanoes. Our pupils have loved Science, exploring lightness and darkness, while also using their scientific skills for various light experiments. For Black History month we studied Lewis Hamilton, researching information about him and then writing some non-chronological reports. Each class also had the opportunity to perform a class assembly for their grown-ups. The children did a brilliant job and their grown-ups were very proud of them. We have been focusing on our number skills in Maths learning new methods such as column addition and subtraction. The children have also been learning their 3s, 4s and 8 times tables. In English, our pupils have written some fact files on falcons, kestrels and kingfishers, and also some interesting story settings based on The Red Prince. Year 3 are excited for the Spring term and look forward to upcoming Christmas events.

Year 4 have had a brilliant start to their final year at Roecroft. They have been demonstrating our school values beautifully and taken on extra responsibilities around the school by applying for jobs in different committees including School Parliament, Science Ambassadors and Eco Warriors. We are looking forward to seeing the positive effect they will have on our school and community over the coming academic year.

In History, the children have been learning about Roman society and military developing their understanding of how ancient empires were built and maintained. They had a fantastic dressing up day too to celebrate the end of topic and especially loved making edible roman roads! In Science, they have loved discovering the different states of matters and exploring reversible changes. In English, children have been exploring non-chronological reports and using their historical knowledge of the Romans to create their own fantastic reports targeted at children. If you need to know a gory or weird fact all our Year 4s now have a favourite!
