Alex takes on the London Marathon to help cure blood cancer

Local teaching assistant Alex is taking on the 2021 Virgin Money London Marathon as part of a 150 strong team of runners raising vital funds for blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan. Alex who’s parents live on Arlesey Road, decided to take on the London Marathon for Anthony Nolan to support more then just being on the stem cell register. Back in 2018, Alex donated stem cells after being identified as a match, although initially successful, unfortunately only gave the donor receiver an extra 6 months. Being met with a connection to this individual, and feeling like there was more that she could do, Alex is running her first ever marathon in honour of that individual; to provide more awareness, and to raise some funds for Anthony Nolan to continue with the work that they do.

Alex, 27 told the Stotfold Magazine “I am excited to be part of the 2021 London Marathon, to raise money for Anthony Nolan because the power of awareness and the donations received, help to find more matches for people on the waiting list. I feel so privileged to have a place with Anthony Nolan in the marathon, after such a long time where limited opportunities for these vital events to raise funds for such important things has been on hold. ” “With this being my first ever Marathon, it feels like such a daunting feat. I only found out I had a place at the end of July 2021, and so training has been hard and raising sponsorship money has been harder. All my friends and family have been so supportive, and I just can not wait to cross the finish line, with the support behind me and knowing I would have raised funds for such an incredible charity. ”

Anthony Nolan is the charity that finds matching stem cell donors for people with blood cancer – and gives them a second chance of life. The charity also carries out ground-breaking research to save more lives and provides information and support to patients after a stem cell transplant, through its clinical nurse specialists and psychologists, who help guide patients through their recovery. Fairfield Art Club News

Fairfield Art Group continues to thrive with growing numbers at the fortnightly meeting – but we still have space for more members.

Val is also the North Herts Area Coordinator for Herts Visual Arts Forum, and like many of their other members across the county, she is busy preparing for Herts Open Studios 2021.

This event runs from 18 September–10 October and several artists are taking part in North Herts, offering a lovely art trail for visitors to follow. As well as 12 artists spread from Royston, Baldock, Hitchin, Great Offley, Pirton and through to Stevenage, another 12 artists are exhibiting in Letchworth. Between them, these local artists offer beautiful glassware, creative textile art, imaginative sculpture, amazing willow weaving, quirky illustrations, stunning jewellery, incredible paintings in a variety of genre, and much more. A perfect source of unusual gifts – for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, house-warming … oh, and Christmas of course less than 18 weeks away!

Val explained to the Stotfold News Magazine : “Our pop-up art galleries are part of Letchworth Culture Project and we have the use of two retail units throughout Open Studios. As well as exhibiting and selling a variety of original artwork, there will be several workshops on offer, plus the opportunity to chat to the artists, to ask about their techniques and materials, to watch them at work. ” These pop-up galleries at 9 Howard Park Corner and at Broadway Chambers, Station Place (the venue for the workshops) will be open from 10 am-4pm every weekend and on Wednesday-Friday each week. ”

For more details of Herts Open Studios, all the venues and workshops on offer, go to www.hvaf.org.uk/open-studios where you will be able to download art trails, find out more about the artists, and follow the links to book workshop places. QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE – JUNE 2022 Next year will see a celebration of the HM The Queen’s 70 years as reigning monarch. A special celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be held over a four-day bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. The Town Council is starting discussions on how our town might like to celebrate this milestone. Initial thoughts include taking part in the National Beacon Lighting Ceremony, using our existing Beacon at Stotfold Cemetery, planting trees as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy planting scheme, encouraging residents to take part in the Big Jubilee Lunch, organising an outdoor cinema or similar event on Greenacre Park, erecting bunting and planting floral displays. We will also be inviting members of the public and organisations to advise us of their events, so that we can put together a Jubilee Celebrations Events Programme.

WELCOME BACK FUND – promoting the town’s businesses and new floral displays Central Bedfordshire Council has been allocated funding from the Government’s Welcome Back Fund (and part of a legacy European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) scheme) for the purpose of encouraging shoppers and employees to return in a safe way, but also to ensure that economic activity returns as quickly as possible. The fund is intended for specific activities towards the safe opening of high streets and town centres, with wide ranging criteria for projects such as beautification of a town centre, promotional material, safety measures, etc.

The Town Council’s application for our portion of the funding was successful. With the help of this magazine, all businesses and shops in the town have been invited to contribute to a business directory, free of charge and to be circulated with the Stotfold News magazine. We will also be brightening up our high street by providing floral planters.

DIARY DATE - REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY This year’s Stotfold Remembrance Day Ceremony takes place on Sunday 14th November, at Stotfold Cemetery, Mill Lane. The ceremony will start at 2.45pm and we ask that you convene at the Cemetery by 2.30pm.

After the laying of the wreaths the parade will make its way along Queen Street, along the High Street and turn into Church Road to St Mary's Church for the service at 3.30pm. Should the weather be inclement the parade will be shortened, along Queen Street and into Chequers Close. The Royal British Legion, organisations from the town and the Town Council will be taking part, and residents are also invited to join us.

DIARY DATE – CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON A date for your diary - this year’s Christmas Lights Switch On will take place on Saturday 27th November 2021 at the Greenacre Centre. Details are being finalised, so please check the next edition of Stotfold News, our website, Facebook page and posters for more information.
