For Stott Media, this is far from our first rodeo. Rides! Magaz ine is a product of more than thirty years of successful publishing experience. We domin ated automotive print advertising in a large region of Pennsylvania for many years. We saw a need for a niche publication, and filled that need. Not long ago, we took a break from automotive publis hing. We left during a period of double-digit growth – an upward trajectory that is not believe d possible in print advertising today. After watching from the outside a while, we could once again spot a seemingly invisible need, and decided to reenter the market in June of this year with Rides! Magazine. Starting with a clean slate, our goal was to formul ate a publication that better served the needs of the market of 2017. The result is a publication that has become far more popular than anything we’ve ever published. That’s a fact! We get calls, emails, and notes in the mail from people who tell us how much they love our magazine. A number of readers have archived a copy of every issue since our first. It’s not a throwaway like most other free publications. If someone tells you otherwise… Consider the source! What really makes a magazine like Rides! successful is RESULTS. If you can generate results for your advertisers, you’ll have happy advertisers, and they’ll stay with you for the long haul. The primary catalyst of results is readership. If you can create a large, targeted readership, your publication will be effective. In order to draw readers, your publication must capture the interest of the people you’re targeting. We’re doing just that. It really doesn’t matter what claims one makes. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. The folks at Mattas Motorsports and Workman Auto will tell you, point blank, they get far better results now that they’ve made the move to Rides! , as will others. We’ve done business with Bellmeade Motors for many years. Both Dick Ryan (owner) and Christina Frantz (manager) are pleased to tell us that they’ve seen very significant results from Rides! since our first issue. his was the fifth year for the Camp Cadet of Somerset Cruise In held at Stoystown Auto Sales at the intersection of Routes 219 and 30. Over 300 vehicles were in attendance throughout the day, making 2017 the biggest year yet. There were all sorts of hot rods, street rods, muscle cars, trucks, and even a few race cars. The first 100 entries received dash plaques. The day included music, food by the Chuck Wagon, snacks by Snyders of Berlin, giveaways and plenty of interaction with car enthusiasts. amp Cadet of Somerset County, Pennsylvania is a non-profit organization that is run by members of the Pennsylvania State Police, Somerset County and Somerset Turnpike Barracks, local law enforcement and supporting adult and youth agencies. The program consists of a week-long camp for youth 13 to 15 years of age from Somerset County. It is customarily held the last full week of July Once at camp, Cadets are introduced to various aspects of the Pennsylvania State Police such as patrol responsibilities and D.U.I. enforcement, criminal investigation, forensics, equestrian and Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) in addition to first aid/CPR and weapon safety. Instruction and presentations are also given by volunteer fire and ambulance company members, Agents from the A.T.F., United States Secret Service, F.B.I. and officers from the PA Game Commission. Appearances are made by helicopters belonging to the Pennsylvania State Police, Conemaugh Hospital and the military. Cadets are also be introduced to physical training, team building exercises, confidence and obstacle courses. A highlight of the week is the rappelling and

climbing tower in addition to a ropes course that includes the zip line. An off-site day includes a hands-on radar demonstration, a tour of the old Somerset County Jail, the P.S.P. Somerset County Barracks, the State Correctional Institution at Somerset, the National Guard Armory in Friedens and a trip to the Flight 93 crash site near Shanksville. The participants stay in a barracks atmosphere and are introduced to military discipline just as a Cadet would be in the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. The week-long program is ended by a prestigious graduation ceremony with parents in attendance. All applicants are interviewed and screened. he 2017 racing season came to a close on Saturday September 9, at the Jennerstown Speedway Complex, as experienced veterans prevailed, after exciting finishes in the five divisions of racing. Stoystown Auto Wreckers presented the biggest race of the year for the Modified division, and the most tenured driver in the field, Tom Golik, won the inaugural “Stoystown Auto Modified Challenge” by a very slim margin at the checkered flag. Similarly, the most veteran driver in the Martella’s Pharmacies Late Model division, Barry Awtey, celebrated in victory lane after taking the lead just two laps from the finish. The all-time leading winner in the J&J Truck Equipment Street Stock division, Adam Kostelnik scored his first victory of 2017, and 1993 Champion Scott Mitchell won for the second time this year, in the Farmers Union Co-op Charger division. David Campbell was the winner in the Somerset Trust Co. Fast ‘n Furious 4-Cylinder division. The unofficial results of Ron’s Collision Center Enduro Series finale, “The Shane Shaffer 75,” indicate Dan Zimmerman and Adam Olah as the top two finishers, however their order is currently under review by officials. Each Enduro team provides a “team scorer,” and the team scoresheets are being compared to the officials’ scoresheets for confirmation. Results of that event will be made official in the coming days. Although it was the last event of the

year, many fans were exclaiming that the Martella’s Pharmacies Late Models’ 30-lap feature was “the race of the year.” Threetime winner Garry Wiltrout started in row one, and grabbed the early lead. But the former Champion was passed on lap four, by the newly crowned 2017 Champion, Jeremiah Kuntz. Kuntz started in the sixth position, as the most recent feature race winner, and he also won his preliminary heat race to start the night. Kuntz began to run away from all competitors as the race reached the midpoint. The 2016 Champion, Barry Awtey, challenged Wiltrout for second place, and on lap 19, Awtey became the runner up to Kuntz. Awtey seemed a “distant second,” as Kuntz led lap after lap. But in the closing stages of the race, Awtey, the all-time leading winner in Jennerstown history, steadily reeled in Kuntz. Kuntz earned his 2017 Champion crown by defeating Awtey in the point standings by only five points. The duo battled for the final victory of the season, thrilling the fans at the conclusion of the race. Wiltrout was closely following the pair, making a three-car fight for the win all the more exciting. Awtey, from nearby Jenners, PA, started the event in ninth place, and took the lead with only two laps remaining in the season, to score his fourth victory of the year. Awtey also won his heat race, driving the Wheeler Show Cattle/Highlander Hot Rods/Stoystown Auto Chevrolet. On the final lap, Wiltrout moved around Kuntz for the second position. The

official top five finishers were Awtey, Wiltrout, Kuntz, Joe Maruca, and recent first time winner Teddy Gibala. The Stoystown Auto Wreckers Modified Challenge offered the highest prize money of the season, for a 35-lap feature race, as the inaugural running of what is sure to become a Jennerstown tradition. A.J. Poljak started the race from the pole position and led the first two laps. On lap three, recently crowned Champion, Chris Brink grabbed the lead. Brink, who won more races in 2017 than any other driver in any division, pulled away to a comfortable lead, after starting in the second spot. On lap seven, the 2016 Champ, Zane Ferrell took second place from Poljak. In the first 20-lap segment, Pete Rech made an impressive charge from the ninth starting position. Rech, a winner in 2017, advanced into the second position, when the action was halted for exactly five minutes at lap 20. Crews were permitted to make handling adjustments and add fuel during the competition break, to prepare for the final 15lap segment. A random draw determined a “six car invert” for the final segment, meaning the Brink would restart in sixth place, after earning a big cash bonus for leading at lap 20. Tom Golik was in sixth place at the race break, meaning he took the green flag in first place, after the invert for the remaining laps. Matt Smith restarted second to Golik, and challenged the veteran, but never led a lap. Golik took command of the race when action resumed. The final segment included a few caution flag incidents, and after one restart, Rech officially led a single lap at the scoring line, before Golik returned to the front. With five laps to go, Brink passed Rech for second place, and challenged Golik for the final five laps. But, at the conclusion of the extra-distance race, Golik, of West Newton, PA, would claim his second victory of the year – earning his highest payday – by a margin of just one car length. Golik has been racing since Jennerstown was dirt track, and won on opening night 2017, and won the finale of the year. Brink and Rech were also “podium finishers” in second and third place, respectively. Two time winner “Racin’ Jason” Busch was set to start the race in seventh place, but he was involved in a spin before lap one was complete. As a result, he took the green flag at the tail of the field, but rallied to finish fourth. Smith finished fifth, and Brink and Ferrell were the heat race winners.

One of the most shocking stories of 2017 is that former Champion of the J&J Truck Equipment Street Stocks, Anthony Aiello, had not visited victory lane, when the final race of the year began. Aiello started in fourth place for the 20-lap feature, and was the leader of the race by lap one. Aiello ran away from the field as young Zac Todaro held second place. On lap five, Adam Kostelnik became the runner up to Aiello, but Aiello was far ahead. Kostelnik started in eighth spot, and was gaining on leader, and good friend, Aiello. Kostelnik, also a former Champ and the alltime leading Street Stock winner, made the winning pass on lap 17. Kostelnik won his heat race, and then went on to score his first feature win of 2017, racing only occasionally during the year. Aiello placed second, and long-time veteran Rick Meehlieb started sixth, and finished third. The 2017 Champion Lauren Butler placed fourth in a borrowed race car, and Todaro finished fifth. Farmers Union Co-Op Charger driver Scott Mitchell has been racing since before some of his current competitors were born. In the 15-lap feature, the 1993 Pure Stock division Champ dominated the event, for his second win of 2017. Mitchell won the heat race, and after starting third, led every lap of the feature. place. Joe Ruskey and first time starter Jay Richmond placed fourth and fifth. Apparent winner Casey Fleegle was disqualified in post-race technical inspection, following the Somerset Trust Company Fast ‘n Furious 4-Cylinder division’s 15-lap feature. Inheriting the win, was David Campbell, who started in ninth place. It was Campbell’s second win of 2017. Two-time winner Evan Nibert, Bently Miller, 2017 Champion Brent Bickerstaff, and 2016 Champ Paul Koffler, III were the top five finishers.

big part of the American culture is the heritage and nostalgia associated with our automobiles. We often see a car or truck as much more than a mode of transportation. They become much like time machines that hold fond memories from years gone by. In 1957, sixteen-year-old Bob Carouse of Somerset attended a farm sale in Accident, Maryland. He outbid two lumberjacks to buy a 1930 Model A for just $79. Bob then began the four-year journey of rebuilding the car. He would often ride his bike to the junkyard to find parts, such as, the roof panel, adopted from a 1950 Dodge, which had a very flat roof. He added 1940 Ford bumpers, 1959 Hudson tail lights and 1950 Mercury hubcaps on 15 inch steel wheels. Salvaged alligator upholstery from a Henry J was used to recover the original Ford seats. The headliner was taken out of a 1955 Chevy two-door hardtop that had been rolled over and fitted to the Model A. Bob and his (then) girlfriend, Marylin, would spend many of their dates working on the Model A. Marylin would sand the thick layers of paint with a sanding disc on a drill while Bob attended to the mechanical needs. The car was on the road just in time for Bob to take Marylin to her senior prom in 1961 in Meyersdale. She wore a dress that matched the ’59 Mercury Canton Red paint used on the Model A, which still smelled like fresh paint that day. Bob and Marylin eventually got married and the Model A continued to be a daily driver. Bob drove it to work every day until

he bought a truck. Bob’s dad drove it to work for a while after that. It eventually sat in a garage until the Carouses moved to Berlin. Discussions about getting the car back on the road began. Marylin says she didn’t know that meant spending ten years, on and off, doing a complete frame-off restoration. Bob did all of the mechanical work himself. He had the car painted (in the same red color) and the upholstery redone by an Amish upholsterer. Bob’s brother, who was an executive at Ford Motor Company in Cleveland, had been able to use his connections to help locate a better high-compression Model A engine. Unfortunately, that engine proved to be problematic. Bob replaced it with a 4 cylinder from a Ford Ranger and 5-speed transmission from the same – Not the typical V8 street rod conversion. Now the car runs great and is more dependable. A 9-inch rear from a Ford Bronco was installed along with coilover rear suspension. The front suspension is still stock. Marylin tells us that the car had always ridden terribly with the original rear buggy-type springs, but now it rides great. A radio with cassette player was also added so the couple could listen to some tunes while cruising. The Model A has been back on the road for about seven years now. Bob built a separate garage for the car. Also in the garage is his brother’s all-original 1970 Ford Maverick. The Carouses claim that they’ll never sell the Model A. It’s been part of their family for over sixty years. We can certainly appreciate that!
