WRANGLER NAMED ‘HOTTEST 4X4-SUV’ AT SEMA

he Jeep Wrangler was named “Hottest 4x4-SUV” for the eighth consecutive year at the 2017 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, cementing Wrangler’s position as a crowd favorite for customization. The “Hottest 4x4-SUV” trophy was presented at the SEMA Show Awards Breakfast on Tuesday morning.

Ram pickup also earned SEMA recognition as a finalist in the “Hottest Truck” category. In the “Hottest Sedan” segment, Dodge Charger also received a finalist nod.

The COPO Camaro features an exclusive Supercrush exterior color and a Hot Wheels appearance package that will be offered with the latest edition of Chevrolet’s factory-built drag racer. An all-new, high-revving 302 Gen V Small Block is also available.

The new 302 racing engine is based on the LT1 engine offered in the 2018 Camaro SS, but built for drag racing with unique components. Its displacement derives from a shorter-stroke crankshaft than the production engine that enables exceptional high-rpm capability.

As with the previous editions, 2018 COPO Camaro models are designed for NHRA’s Stock Eliminator classes. They are fitted with racing chassis and suspension components, including a unique solid rear axle system in place of a regular-production Camaro’s independent rear axle.

he Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) announced the top 12 finalists in the fourth annual SEMA Battle of the Builders competition – the event that determines the builder the aftermarket community considers best.

The 2017 SEMA Battle of the Builders competition began with more than 200 vehicles entered into the annual competition from vehicle builders and car customizers from across the United States. These builders represent an elite group of individuals who have demonstrated extreme talent, creativity and craftsmanship in modifying cars, trucks, and SUVs. Industry experts, David Freiburger, executive producer, TEN: The Enthusiast Network;

Fred Williams, editor-at-large, Petersen’s 4-Wheel & Off Road; and RJ de Vera, customer engagement leader, Meguiar’s Inc., narrowed the field to select the top 12. These 12 finalists then judged one another on Friday at the SEMA Show and vote to determine who would be named the Ultimate Builder of the 2017 SEMA Battle of the Builders. The SEMA Battle of the Builders winner was at SEMA Ignited, after the trade-only SEMA Show closed.

Below are this year’s top 12 finalists. So, who won? We won’t spoil it for you. A new episode of the TV special, “SEMA: Battle of the Builders,” will premier on the Velocity Channel on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

The project started with a clean 1932 Ford Tudor body canvas. All planned modifications were laid out before any cutting began. Certain dimensions were not determined until the body had been on and off the frame for the desired look. Johnson was a 2015 SEMA Battle of the Builders Top 3 finalist.

Payne has participated, built, and designed over 68 builds prior to the 2017 SEMA Show. This year he brought 30 builds to the show with his name on them. “Battle of the Builders encompasses unique and innovative builds that make people’s jaws drop and create buzz in person as well as social media,” he said. “Well, my builds will do just that. They are one-off custom builds you won’t see elsewhere.”

The car is a SplitRay 2017 Pirelli Great 8 cut down the middle and widened 6 3/8. It has a Z06-inspired interior, LS9 with a one-off supercharger system, and a six-speed transmission.

Multiple computers provide complete control of the car with a Bluetooth device. I took over 20,000 hours to build.

Troy Trepanier’s ’29 Model A uses an all-aluminum small-block with a five-speed transmission and a modified original Halibrand quick-change rear axle. The chassis rides on a modified ’32 Ford boxed-in frame with a custom crossmember and an internal torsion bar suspension with RideTech shocks at the front and rear. The body was primarily hand built using some original Model A components. The Model A features Rad Rides customized paint and a full custom interior.

Leach, owner of CAL Automotive Creations in Bennington, Neb., is a previous Ridler winner, 2014 Trend Setter of the Year, Ford Design Award winner, Barrett-Jackson Cup winner, and Top 10 Battle of the Builders finalist in 2015. The car has Art deco finned suspension and chassis, cast-looking interior and components. Coach-built body with attitude and elegance combining oldschool hot rodding.
