SAY HELLO TO PRO COMP CUSTOM BUILDS A LOW, LONG AND LOUD CUSTOM 1940 FORD COUPE (JG) All hot rodders agree with that statement! What modifications were done to the car?
(JG) So, you really can drive it? What is the ride like?
e have been following the build of this incredible 1940 Ford Coupe and finally seeing the finished product is more impressive than we imagined. This week we met with the builder - Bruce Harvey, the owner of Pro Comp Custom, to find out more about this unbelievable hot rod.
(BH) How long do you have? There are a lot of mods. We chopped the roof 4” at the back and 5” at the front. The entire body was sectioned 4” in the middle, the floor was brought up 4” to get the frame up into the car, the roof was flattened at the rear by the rear window, the rear fenders were brought forward and upward to make the car 6” shorter, and we hand fabricated the hood scoop.
(BH) What can I say – it feels really cool driving it. It’s a one-off car and driving it is amazing. Plus the Ford 347 Stroker has an aggressive sound. It’s what a hot rod should sound like. The air ride system helps navigate the ubiquitous spring potholes.
(JG) I have to tell you, Bruce – this car is amazing. How did you come up with this concept?
(JG) Wow – and this is a steel car? Weren’t you nervous chopping it?

(BH) Thank you, I am proud of this car. When I look at the design of any car, I always “see” ways of how the body lines can be improved. As for a ’40 Ford Coupe, they always look too tall to me and I thought it would look really cool if it were short, fat, and long. A car can never be too low, you know, as long as you can fit in it. When I chop a car, I imagine the finished product. I want the dimensions to look right, I want it to be radical and I want to still be able to drive it. What’s the point of having a car you can’t drive, right?

(BH) The seconds before I start any chop I am nervous, but my excitement quickly takes over. I mean, I know the car is going to look insane and I am picturing the end result the entire time. And yes, it is a steel car. (JG) You mentioned moving the frame up into car. Were you able to use the existing frame? (BH) Actually, we had to hand build the custom frame to fit into the modified body. The Pro Comp Custom technician who built it made sure every weld was pristine, plus it is rugged.

(JG) I have to ask about those crazy headers. Are they for show? (BH) The headers are my favorite part of the car. And they are for go! I always liked the look of the Duesenberg’s pipes. We custom fabricated the headers to come out of the engine and snake through the running boards. That was the most complex fabrication of the entire car. (JG) It looks like there is a lot of complex fabrication on the car. (BH) Yes, pretty much every panel was touched – the running boards, trunk, fenders, quarters, the console, the seating, and more. I wanted everything about the car to be unique.

(JG) What do people generally want to know about the ’40? (BH) I have to laugh. You know, with all of the mods done to this car, 95% of the time people only ask about the paint. Oh – and people always ask if they can touch the car to feel the paint. (JG) Ummm…I was going to ask about the paint. It is paint, right? How did you get that unique finish? (BH) My goal was to make it look like bare steel. It is a custom blended silver with a satin clear coat and I texturized it to give it some depth. Now – how I did it – that’s a secret. (JG) Carmine is a great name for this vehicle. Who named it? (BH) The owner’s daughter named the ’40 Carmine. I agree, it fits the car. She wanted a name with a double meaning. Carmine is a type of red (as in the interior) and her dad can say “the car is mine”. It’s nice when the entire family can have fun and appreciate the car. (JG) What is next for Carmine? (BH) “Carmine” will be shown at a lot of car shows. In 2018, we will be showing it at the Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Detroit shows. Of course, there are a lot of great local shows in the area that we will be attending. (JG) Is there anything else you would like our readers to know? (BH) Hey – stop by the shop, look at Carmine and our other great builds and if anyone has a project they would like us to tackle we are game. Oh, and yes, you can touch the paint.
