his week, we’re featuring a car that is special, not just because it’s wicked cool – also because the Mopar fanatic that owns it is just 22 years old! Jared Roberts of Bellefonte acquired his fondness for Mopar muscle cars from his family heritage. His grandfather was owner of Rutledge Motors, one of the largest Chrysler dealerships in the Pacific Northwest. His dad, Jeff, spent summer months working as a detailer at the dealership during his high school years. At that time, Jeff drove a ’72 340 Challenger and a ’70 440 six-pack Challenger as his daily drivers. Naturally, Jared heard many stories of his dad’s street racing antics back in his younger days. As a result, he got the Mopar bug at an early age. At age 15, with dad’s help, Jared’s first Mopar project was a ’72 Charger Rallye. It was nothing more than a painted shell – no drivetrain, interior or wiring, missing trim, brackets, etc. Although Jeff also contributed a 440 from his Power Wagon, it wasn’t long until Jared realized he was in over his head. So he put the Charger aside and searched for a car that was a bit more complete. Jared says that he always had a thing for ’6769 Darts because of the Hurst Hemi cars. They narrowed the search down to a purple ’69 and a blue ’67, both with 440s. The ’69 wasn’t as nice in person as in the photos. The ’67 was a great car, but was out of Jared’s price range. After a few months, the price on the ’67 came down substantially and Jeff traveled to West Virginia and snatched it up. He told Jared that he’d fronted the money for the Dart, but he had to work it off in the family business. The Dart was a running and driving big-tire

car with a roll cage and a stock 440 that was pulled from a motorhome. Jared ran the car for about two weeks until a series of mechanical problems would lead him to re-evaluate his options. That lead to a decision to rebuild the 440 that Jeff had given him for the Charger. Jared sent the 440 block to DL Automotive & Performance in State College for machine work and then onto Ryan Johnson at Shady Dell Speed Shop, also in State College, for assembly. It was stroked to 526 cubic inches and stuffed with Keith Black 10.25:1 forged pistons, a K1 Technologies forged crankshaft, and topped off with a set of Indy 440 EZ-295 CNC “Little Easy” heads, and an Indy single-plane intake with a Prosystems SV1 95mm carburetor. After Bart Grande at Godspeed Dyno and Hostel in Port Matilda helped to dial in the carb, this effective combination of parts produced an impressive 736 horses at the flywheel – naturally aspirated. This much power meant that a suitable transmission was also needed. Jared opted for a 727 TorqueFlite, which Shady Dell also put together for him. He also swapped the 8-3/4 rear with a narrowed Dana 60. During the year or so it took to pull the

drivetrain together, Jared was able to do some painting under the hood before everything was back in the car. Even with Jeff’s help, Jared had to pinch pennies and work hard to get the car back on the road. No doubt a very rewarding moment. However, that satisfaction would be short lived. In October of 2013, while driving his younger brother Dalton to school at CPI in Pleasant Gap, the Dart was T-boned on the passenger’s side. Dalton was trapped inside the car. Rescue workers had to cut the roof off the Dart in order to remove him. Jared spent one day in the hospital, however Dalton spent four days in the ICU and a total of four weeks in the hospital as a result of his injuries. While the Dart was totaled, the roll cage fortunately prevented any fatalities. Not long after the accident, Jared began to get the fever to buy another car. Jeff stepped in once again and brokered a deal on a ’67 Dart GT that was at Shady Dell for sale by the second owner. It spent most of its life as a race car and was parked in the late ‘90s.

It was no more complete than the ’72 Charger project he had previously abandoned. It was tubbed and had a Strange 9-inch rear. There was, of course, no engine or transmission, glass, wiring or plumbing. But it was wearing a fresh coat of paint. It also came with fiberglass fenders, hood trunk lid and bumpers along with a 16-point roll cage. Many of the things that Jared had wanted to do to the blue Dart were already done, so for five grand, Jared had another Dart – and this time it was a real GT. The drivetrain from the wrecked Dart was salvaged for the new car. The 526 wedge was sent back to Shady Dell for repairs, and a new 727 procured since the old one was destroyed in the accident. While that was taking place, he swapped out the factory torsion-bar suspension with an RMS AlterKtion coilover system. Progress on the car was slow at best because the dollar amounts needed to put it back on the road were substantial, and in the back of his mind, the memory of the accident was still a lingering thought. A few times he thought about selling the car. He says, “I put so much time and effort into the last one, and some idiot took it all away from me in the blink of an eye and I ended up back to square one.” That put the project into slow motion for about a year until Jeff said to Jared, “You have to hit it like you’re going to kill it, or you just need to sell it and get your money back out of it”, which is exactly what Jared did. At the time he was also hanging out with the local tuner crowd, and they too served as source of motivation to push the process along, which reflects in the finished car. As an example, the fiberglass hood needed to be painted, and instead of trying to match the existing paint, he opted to send it off to State College Vinyl in State College, for an urban camo wrap, along with the bumpers, which also received a carbon fiber wrap. The steering wheel was wrapped to match the hood. Jeff being a traditional Mopar guy was not initially amused by this decision. It was in his opinion, “rice burner
design.” However, he’s since grown used to it to the point that he actually likes it. When it came time to sort out the wiring, Jeff jumped in. He is an electrical engineer by trade so he created a one-point ground wiring grid system for the car. This allows everything to have a single point of power, and a single point of ground, which eliminates having to ground against the body. As work wrapped up on the car, one of the biggest lessons learned from the accident was seat placement. The seats in the blue Dart were anchored to the stock mounting points on the floor. On this car they were integrated into the roll cage as an added measure of security. After two long years of effort and plenty of dollars spent, the Dart finally hit the road in September of 2015. Jared now looks at the end result as more than a collection of parts. Looking back, he says, “I’ve learned many fundamental things that not only applied to this car, but also to life in general. Time and money management, along with making the right decisions are probably the most important things. My dad and my friends have been both the greatest supporters, and my greatest critics throughout this build process.” Although Jared has remained accident-free since the Dart hit the road, he did have one hair-raising experience when the hood flew off the car after leaving the Bellefonte Cruise. Jared credits Buck Struble of Midnight Customs for fixing the cowl and fenders and matching the paint in short order. It’s encouraging when members of our younger generations show an appreciation of older cars – especially Detroit iron from the muscle car era. It gives one faith that the love of cars isn’t dying after all. Our hats are off to Jared Roberts for building a car that would be considered top-notch for someone twice his age – and to Jeff Roberts for being such a great mentor to his son. We can’t wait to see what Jared’s next build will be!

Tracing the most coveted vintage Chevy trucks sold at Barrett-Jackson auctions

s vintage Chevrolet trucks increase in popularity with enthusiasts, more trucks are going up for auction and sale prices for the most coveted trucks keep increasing. “Vintage trucks, especially Chevrolets, have been gaining popularity with collectors, to the point they are rivaling muscle cars,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson Auction Company. “What’s interesting is collectors are looking for very different vehicles: The most collectible muscle cars are numbers-matching survivors; the most sought-after vintage trucks are full custom builds, and buyers are looking for both unique design elements and high-quality craftsmanship.” “Part of the appeal of a vintage Chevrolet truck is the opportunity to build the custom truck of your dreams,” said Sandor Piszar,
marketing director for Chevrolet Trucks. “Solid trucks can be found for relatively low costs, but the sky is the limit in terms of body work, chassis and performance upgrades. As such, Chevrolet trucks are a great option for collectors of all ages.” As we look back at 100 years of Chevy truck history, here’s a list of the nine most expensive Chevy trucks sold at Barrett-Jackson auctions to date. Barrett-Jackson will host its next auction Oct. 19-21 in Las Vegas, with more than 60 Chevy trucks on the docket more than double any other competitive truck brand. With so much interest in vintage Chevy trucks, this list of the most expensive Chevy trucks will be changing very soon.
1. 1957 CHEVROLET 3100 CUSTOM TRUCK, SOLD FOR $214,500 IN 2016
This 1957 Chevrolet 3100 Custom Truck, better known as “Quicksilver,” is a 2014 Barrett-Jackson Cup winner and has been recognized as “one of the finest custom truck builds of all times,” according to Barrett-Jackson Auction House. These honors came with a hefty price tag, and the truck was sold for $214,500 in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2016. Nearly everything on this vehicle, from the 540 Big Block, 650-horsepower Chevy engine, to the handmade and reshaped body panels, was customized by Hot Rod Garage in Sand Springs, Oklahoma.
2. 1950 CHEVROLET 3100 CUSTOM PICKUP, SOLD FOR $205,700 IN 2017
You’d be hard-pressed to find a single part on this 1950 Chevrolet 3100 Custom Pickup that has not been customized. First showcased at the SEMA show, this vehicle sold for $205,700 in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2017. The truck features extensive modifications including an all-new TCI custom chassis with independent front suspension and a 500-horsepower Chevrolet Performance Hot Cam LS3 crate engine with 4L65E automatic transmission. The interior features a reshaped dash and a handmade redesigned bench seat, console, door panels and headliner.

This 1957 Chevrolet Cameo Pickup, finished in full custom Orange Pearl paint, sold for $159,500 in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2007. The orange masterpiece features a 500-horsepower Big Block Chevy engine and a 400 transmission with Electric Overdrive. Interior upgrades include a full leather interior, vintage air conditioning, power steering, power disc brakes, power windows and a 400-watt stereo.

It took 7,000 man-hours and thousands of one-off hand-crafted parts to build this 1957 Chevrolet C-6 Custom Pickup, which sold for $148,500 in Las Vegas in 2011. This truck comes with a 402cid LS3 motor, a complete Corvette C6 suspension and drivetrain with a six-speed transaxle and a full Air Ride suspension. The truck won a GM Design award at SEMA 2009 and a Mothers Choice Award at SEMA 2010.

With six years of customization work and six magazine appearances, it’s no wonder that this 1955 Chevrolet 3100 Custom Pickup made its way into the top nine. This pickup sold for $132,000 in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2006. The Kandy Orange exterior is complemented by a tan leather interior, both of which were meticulously detailed by Cimtex Rods in Jarrell, Texas. Named by Street Trucks Magazine as one of the top 50 trucks of the decade, this award-winning truck can boast about being the Goodguys Truck of the Year 2002-2003 and a Boyds Pro Pick at Scottsdale, Arizona, and Columbus, Ohio, as well as top awards at ISCA events and Super Chevy shows.
7. 1960 CHEVROLET EL CAMINO CUSTOM PICKUP, SOLD FOR $126,500 IN 2017
This one-of-a-kind 1960 Chevrolet El Camino Custom Pickup sold for $126,500 in Palm Beach, Florida, in 2017. Nearly every piece of this vehicle has been customized, from its GM ZZ 502ci crate engine with a Ram Jet fuel-injection system to its fully custom leather interior and highly detailed and painted undercarriage.
8. 1959 CHEVROLET 3100 CUSTOM PICKUP, SOLD FOR $121,000 IN 2014
This gem of a vehicle, a 1959 Chevrolet 3100 Custom Pickup, sold for $121,000 in Scottsdale, Arizona in 2014. The truck is completely rebuilt, keeping nothing but the body from the original vehicle. It was built from the ground up beginning with a high-strength chassis complete with a four-link setup, chrome 9-inch Currie rear end with 3.70 gears and a Detroit Tru-Trac differential. A look inside reveals a white leather interior with black accents, added air conditioning and green-tinted glass.
9. 1971 CHEVROLET C-10 CUSTOM PICKUP, SOLD FOR $110,000 IN 2014
This 1971 Chevrolet C-10 Custom Pickup, lovingly called “Adel” by its previous owners, sold for $110,000 in Scottsdale, Arizona, in 2014. After being donated to the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer, the truck was rebuilt and customized to be sold on behalf of the foundation.
