Words from The Manager I hope you find your voices and the drum and make a huge amount of noise. Last weeks away game at Romford was a disappointment come 5pm for all. I had looked at the fixtures and the league table and thought we were in a good position to push on up the league table. Looking at who we had played so far I feel we have nothing to fear as long as everyone is playing to their full potential. The lads were given the league table before the game and the instruction was clear play with the high levels we have done and you will win the game. We didn’t and with two goals gifted we were in for a tough afternoon. Fair play to Romford they defended well got bodies behind the ball to make it tough to break down. We are in no doubt that we are in a very tough league and you will be punished if you are not at the races. There will be ups and downs but we have to learn from them and quickly. The players are putting it in during training and this is twice a week. So there preparation is how I believe it should be. Yes we have had injuries but this just gives the squad the chance to be used in full. We are trying where possible to use and promote the reserves and U18’s. I will only do this when I feel it is right for that individual. We are still behind clubs who have academies who have the chance to work with players every day. This is also part of there budget and replied on heavily. We must all remember this is where we strive to be. I am not moaning about it I am just giving people the facts.

PAUL

MUSGROVE

5 The management are all striving to make small gains where possible and we will continue to do this. Back to the pitch and we have had two new players arrive in Tevan Allen and Willie Minkah. Tevan is a player I have liked for a long time and is a real winner. Tev likes to get on the ball and play forwards and make things happen. He is also one that will score goals. Willie has real quality on the ball and excites me in training. Willie has been playing in Sweden and plays with Reggie as a Bermuda international. With that comes departures Anthony Spyrou left us because of off the field issues and felt the step 4 level schedule did not suit him. Robbie Sweeney is also leaving the club and this one is one that hurt me. Robbie and I have got on so well since he arrived at the club. I know he is a fans favourite but Robbie has started his own business and simply cannot commit to our expectations of games and training. I would not be doing my job if I let standards slip within our group. It would create double standards and I am not about that as a manager. Robbie goes with our best wishes and we wish him all the very best for the future. Today we welcome Great Wakering Rovers a team I feel we owe one because of how well we played during the Trophy game only to go out on penalties. I want to see a reaction to the display at Romford and a home game is the best way to do this. In front of our home fans. The best non-league fans I hope you find your voices and the drum and make a huge amount of noise. .

We are excited by the challenge ahead

STOWMARKET Town chairman Neil Sharp says he knows he won’t sleep much on Friday night. Sharp (pictured above) is counting down the days to the club’s first-ever Step 4 fixture – the culmination of seven years’ hard work at the club. The Old Gold & Blacks were awarded promotion from the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division under The FA’s restructuring earlier in the summer after two Covid-interrupted seasons. They will start life in the Pitching In Isthmian League on the opening day of the 2021-22 season on Saturday at home to Canvey Island, kick-off 3pm. “I won’t sleep much on Friday night,” admitted 60-year-old Sharp, who has been chairman of the club for around ten years. “I don’t often sleep well the night before a game, but I know I won’t this weekend, which will be a combination of everything that’s been going on. “Saturday will be a great day for the club, although we will have to wait and see how many spectators turn up to watch, but hopefully the sun will be shining and they will see a good game.” Sharp has been involved with the club for 40 years, although not continuously, starting out as a player in the days when Stowmarket’s home ground was at Cricket Meadow in the town. The club have come a long way since then, but especially since they were languishing in the lower half of Division One of the Thurlow Nunn League seven years ago.

SATURDAY 16TH OCTOBER 2021 // ISTHMIAN LEAGUE - NORTH DIVISION

Match Report: Iain van der Ree Stowmarket unable to capitalise on their recent league form as they took on 3rd from bottom Romford on Saturday. Stow started the match brightly with George Bugg running through on goal and seemingly brought down by the Romford keeper with claims for a penalty dismissed by the match official. This set out the stall for the rest of the afternoon for the Suffolk side, as against the run of play, Shermandin Artmeladze sent a looping shot into the net to put the Essex side 1-0 up at half time. The second half continued in the same vein with a defensive mistake gifting Christian Adu Gyamfi an opportunity to run through and score to put Romford 2-0 ahead. Stow manager Paul Musgrove will be looking for a positive reaction from his players as they take on Great Wakering Rovers at Greens Meadow on Saturday.

9 The Prentice family for the overwhelming support, Pony and David Walker who continue to again do the unseen hard yards. I know Tom and Taylor may not thank me for bringing them in to the lime light but what he has done financially for the club is remarkable over recent seasons and continues in to the new season. If you see Tom on a match day please do go and have a chat they are very open to talking to everyone. Tom and Taylor are also out and out winners so I often get the disgusted Dad look when I enter the bar if he feels the performance is not where it should be. But all this shows me is we are going places with their backing. Thank you to you all. I can be demanding and relentless and hope as a team on and off the pitch we can make memories together that last a life time. I hope in 20yrs time people will still talk about the Stowmarket team that went in to step 4 football and did everyone proud. Saturday will be particularly emotional one for me as I lost my Dad recently unexpectedly. We had planned many matches he would come to this season as he followed me everywhere during my football and management career. He would of wanted you all to be as noisy as possible. Which lastly but no means least brings me to you our great supporters. The players and I love it when your our 12th man a noisy, greens meadow is the best ground in nonleague football when we have the kids behind the goals and you all singing and banging the drum. So please raise the noise sing your hearts out and we will do all we can on the pitch to ensure you enjoy Stowmarket Town match day experience.

GREAT WAKERING

ROVERS MANAGER Stephen Butterworth

The club was formed in 1919 by soldiers demobbed after World War I and finding employment in the local brickfields. Not much in memory remains of the early years of the club although the club do poses some wonderful pictures from around that period.

LAYER / COACH P Martin Tuohy OACH C Craig Shipman

We first played in one of Southend’s oldest leagues, the Southend & District League, where the Rovers stayed until 1982. Rovers were the leagues most dominant clubs, especially in the 1960s and 1970s and to this day remain so on record. The switch in 1982 saw the club move to the newly formed Southend & District Alliance Football League, but sadly this league folded in 1989 leaving Rovers with a decision to move back to the Southend & District League or take a step up in standard. With what most Rovers feel to be the best squad amassed by a manager, in this case Eddie Nash, Rovers took the decision to step up to intermediate level and joined the Essex Intermediate League.

Rovers remained in the Essex Intermediate League for three seasons, winning the championships of Divisions Three and Two in successive seasons. After the latter, Rovers successfully applied to join the Essex Senior League and found themselves in Step 5 of the Non-League pyramid, which for a village club was a tremendous feat.

In the 1994-1995 season Rovers narrowly beat Sawbridgeworth Town FC for the Essex Senior League title. Rovers had collected 71 points for the season and lost just three times although the title win was only won on goal difference (18). During that season Rovers forward Paul Flack scored 28 goals, which included a haul of 4 goals away at Eton Manor as Rovers celebrated a 9-0 victory. Also included in his stunning season were two further hattricks. That season his strike partner Neil Ramsey grabbed 20 goals as Rovers hit home 82 goals.

17 Rovers defence of the Essex Senior crown would falter the following season, finishing 2nd behind Romford. In the 1996-1997 season Rovers would also finish second again, behind Ford United by just three points. The 1997-1998 season would be Rovers worst season in the Essex Senior League, finishing mid-table, 7th, and 36 points behind winners Concord Rangers. The club’s final appearance in the Essex Senior League saw them finish 2nd behind Bowers United. However, due to Bowers United failing to meet ground grading requirements for promotion, Rovers were promoted to the Isthmian League in their place. With Isthmian League Division Three on the horizon for the 1999-2000 season, Rovers move into Step 4 of the league pyramid was complete. In 2002 the Isthmian League then reorganised and Rovers found themselves in a new look Division One North, finishing mid-table but more than holding their own in what was a very competitive league. In 2003 the club were embroiled in a relegation fight, although this was won convincingly as Rovers finished 15 points ahead of the relegation zone. A further league reorganisation in 2004 saw the club switch to the Southern Football League Eastern Division for two seasons. The 2004-2005 season saw Rovers miss relegation by one point due to Erith & Belvedere FC being deducted three points, but in the 2005-2006 season Rovers bounced back to finish safely in mid-table. For the 2006-2007 season Rovers found themselves in familiar territory, switching back to the Isthmian League Division One North, where we finished 12th. Two further seasons saw Rovers finish 13th and stabilise themselves as a Ryman League club. . .

The 2009-2010 season brought a record number of points for the Rovers at Ryman League level, 64, but towards the end of the season manager Iain O’Connell was offered the management of Ryman Premier League side Margate leaving assistant Ryan Wilkinson and physio Cleve Taylor to take over temporary control with 12 games to go. In a season that saw Rovers top the table for 9 weeks, the dizzy heights would eventually get to O’Connell’s side as they finished in 9th place, 13 points behind the playoffs. Ryan Wilkinson and Cleve Taylor would be implemented as joint-managers for the 2010-2011 season and their first season in charge would offer up 44 points and 15th place in the league. Their start to the 20112012 season wasn’t what they had hoped and after one win in their opening nine games, both offered their resignations. Rovers made first team coach Danny Heath caretaker manager and he brought temporary stabilisation back to the side as they recorded two wins and three draws from his seven games in charge. Rovers would offer the management post to Danny Greaves, son of ex-Tottenham and England legend Jimmy Greaves. Danny saw that a clean sweep of the side was required and let go the majority of the squad, bringing in loanees whilst trying to sign up new players. Unfortunately this plan didn’t work and after a miserable run of six losses in a row, he too offered his resignation. .

IN THE

COMMUNITY In partnership with BBC Radio Suffolk, Stowmarket Town Football Club are taking part in Kit Out The Nation. Thank you for supporting our Kit out the Nation campaign. Our aim was to get kit and sports equipment to the schools and clubs where a young person can use it. Good condition equipment, that would otherwise go to landfill or simply remain in cupboards, could get an extended life and help a young person get active. We asked you to share everyday items of sports kit (clothing) and regular games equipment that a young person can use in an activity, such as balls, bats and rackets. The BBC says “We have had over 33,000 donated bits of kit with hundreds of companies and charities involved all working closely with local BBC radio stations across England, and BBC radio stations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland”
