WORDS FROM THE MANAGER

PAUL MUSGROVE

4 WINS AND A DRAW IN THE LAST 5 GAMES!

5 We welcome you all to Greens Meadow this afternoon. We extend this to the players, staff and committee of Aveley who are having an excellent season so far. When you visit Aveley you will know what a great facility they have and one to admire and aspire to build our foundations right in this league to achieve the same for a fabulous community.

This quality cannot be replaced and is stretching our contact thin to get others in. The squad is built on flexibility and when getting the squad together I had this in mind that players need that versatility. This is proving to be helping at this moment in time. Also Alex Clarke from our Reserves is now in our squad and I hope we give him more minutes on the pitch.

We are coming back to the home of non-league football off the back of 4 wins and a draw in the last 5 games. This we are all really pleased with and with consistency comes increased belief.

We are moving in the right direction and I hope with your continued support we can all see this.

We are still struggling with long term injuries Dom Docherty who has had better news that maybe surgery is not needed. Two months of rehab may see him back in a Stowmarket short again this season.

Muzzy

Craig Parker hamstring will be back in the new year. Josh Curry is still struggling with long Covid and this could mean he’s not back until the new year. Jack Ainsley achilles will also be back in the new year.

Please keep showing your continued support for the whole club and teams.

We are excited by the challenge ahead

STOWMARKET Town chairman Neil Sharp says he knows he won’t sleep much on Friday night. Sharp (pictured above) is counting down the days to the club’s first-ever Step 4 fixture – the culmination of seven years’ hard work at the club. The Old Gold & Blacks were awarded promotion from the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division under The FA’s restructuring earlier in the summer after two Covid-interrupted seasons. They will start life in the Pitching In Isthmian League on the opening day of the 2021-22 season on Saturday at home to Canvey Island, kick-off 3pm. “I won’t sleep much on Friday night,” admitted 60-year-old Sharp, who has been chairman of the club for around ten years. “I don’t often sleep well the night before a game, but I know I won’t this weekend, which will be a combination of everything that’s been going on. “Saturday will be a great day for the club, although we will have to wait and see how many spectators turn up to watch, but hopefully the sun will be shining and they will see a good game.” Sharp has been involved with the club for 40 years, although not continuously, starting out as a player in the days when Stowmarket’s home ground was at Cricket Meadow in the town. The club have come a long way since then, but especially since they were languishing in the lower half of Division One of the Thurlow Nunn League seven years ago.

BARKING 1 STOW TOWN 6 SATURDAY 27TH NOV 2021 Match Report: Iain van der Ree Stow go Barking mad with six goals in Essex Storm Arwen bought wet and very windy conditions to Mayesbrook Park where Stowmarket were in the mood to create a perfect storm of their own. With the Suffolk side attacking at every opportunity, it was Bermuda International Reggie Lambe who got the early break through with a low strike into Barking net. In form Striker Luke Brown not to be outdone found space in the box collecting a well-placed pass to put the visitors 0-2 up at halftime.

The travelling fans sensing that there were more goals in this game weren’t going to disappointed as the other half of the Bermudian duo Willie Clemons sailed through the defence and expertly placed his shot into the home net. A well worked corner found Brown for his second of the afternoon. Darnell Goather-Braithwaite scored a consolation goal for Barking before Josh Mayhew who came on as sub immediately replied with a goal of his own, leaving Joe Jefford to complete the scoring for the impressive Stowmarket side.

HISTORY OF AVELEY FC AVELEY FOOTBALL CLUB was formed in 1927 and played in local leagues until 1939. Club activities were then suspended during the war years 1939/45. In 1946 the club was reformed and joined the Thurrock Combination. Aveley twice won the Essex Junior Cup, firstly in 1948, then retaining it the following year. Aveley gained Senior League status in season 1949/50 and were elected into the London League, Division One. They were Division Champions in the 1951/52 season. In the same season they moved from Lodge Meadow to their present ground, Mill Field, and were promptly nicknamed The Millers. In season 1954/55 they were Division Champions once again which was followed by election to The Delphian League in 1955/56. They competed in this league until 1962/63 with little success. 1963/64 saw Millers join the Athenian League. Full membership of the Football Association was granted in 1964/65. Season 1970/71 was probably the clubs most successful one. The first round proper of the FA Cup was reached along with the FA Amateur Cup quarter-finals, they were also Champions of the Athenian League. Aveley were elected to the Isthmian League in season 1973/74. Here they competed without success in Division One until they were relegated to Division Two North at the end of the 1985/86 season. Millers did however achieve two cup successes during this time. The Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy was won in 1979/80 and the Hornchurch Charity Cup in 1982/83.

The 1989/90 campaign was a memorable one for The Millers. Promotion back to Division One was gained with a tremendous end of season run-in to finish second to Heybridge Swifts by two points. This was followed by a 3-0 victory over Premier Division St.Albans in the final of the AC Delco (League) Cup. This made Aveley the first team from the lowest division to win this competition. After this the club slipped down to Division Three and cup successes were limited to appearances in the finals of both the East Anglian Cup and the The Essex ThamesSide Challenge Trophy in 1997/98. The 1999/2000 season started well with Aveley being un-beaten in the League at Christmas. However a turn in fortunes saw them slip and eventually finish 9th. This was followed by 6th place in season 2000/01. A roller-coaster season 2001/02 saw the club finish third behind Hornchurch and champions Croydon Athletic and gain promotion to Division 1 North. An excellent season for the Millers in 2002/03. Good runs in the FA Cup and Bryco Cup were capped by an appearance in the Essex Senior Cup Final. This did not go Millers way however with Chelmsford City winning 5-0. The Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup was reached, eventually losing out to Canvey Island 2-0. A good run-in saw Millers finish in sixth place in the League.

STOW TOWN RESERVES

Words from the Reserve Team manager Craig Brown “Saturday we played Wivenhoe Town Res at Greens Meadow in tricky conditions. The squad of 16 having 11 under 18s players involved with 7 starting in the first 11. I handed a home debut to 16 year old goal keeper Isaac Read who played an excellent game in tricky conditions. We started the game very well & hit the woodwork twice in the opening 30 mins and missed some very good chances, we come in at half time 0-0. We started on the front foot again in the second half but was starting to feel like one of those days until man of the match Liam knights tucked away inside the box very calm finish. After 70 mins then top goal scorer Jack Wharton-Richardson finished of the game with a cool finish past the goal keeper great reaction from a youthful team.
