WORDS FROM THE MANAGER
PAUL MUSGROVE
WE ARE BACK AGAIN AT THE HOME OF NONLEAGUE FOOTBALL
PAUL M USGROVE SP ON SOR E D BY

We welcome you all to Greens Meadow this evening. We extend this to the players, staff and committee of Basildon United.
With 11 games to go in the league. 6 of these are at home. Sing your hearts out, bang the drum and cheer in the lads as it makes such a huge huge difference.
We are back again at the home of nonleague football off the back a very hard game against Ipswich Town u18/23’s. The boys went about their business again and I thought put in a huge shift.. I had a nearly full team to pick from and to gain any success this season we will need everyone to play their part.
I hope we all push together to see how far we can go. Please keep showing your continued support for the whole club and teams as it’s massive to us all on match days.
My fear of the back of such a huge effort is can the boys keep that intensity and focus this afternoon against a physically strong Basildon who have had good results lately. Every team in this league is tough. If you haven’t noticed or unaware ground improvements are in progress to get the ground grading required to stay at step 4 or move onto step 3. If anyone reading the notes can help in anyway please contact the club via Twitter or the Club Website. We all need to remember where we are at and where we have been and stay grounded. It’s tough because over the last five years we have had more ups than downs so we when we don’t perform at all of our high standards it feels like a loss. We have no god given right to think any game will be easy.

STOW TOWN 3 IPSWICH XI 1 WED 23RD FEBRUARY 2022 Match Report: Iain van der Ree
A DISCIPLINED STOW THROUGH TO THE QUARTER FINALS OF THE SUFFOLK PREMIER CUP A Greens Meadow crowd of 440 watched as the Ipswich young guns took on high flying Stowmarket in the Suffolk Premier Cup. A well drilled Ipswich Town tested Stowmarket early on from the kick off exploiting the wide areas and breaking down Stow’s advances on goal. The opener came through when Callum Page picked up the ball from a throw in and carved through Stow’s defences to fire his shot into the net. Ipswich continued to press with the Stow back line showcasing some resolute defending coupled by a magnificent save from James Bradbrook in goal. The Old Gold and Black’s patience paid off in the 38th minute when goalkeeper Bort spilled a save and Evan Collard pounced to level things up at the break. With the match finely balanced, it was a time for cool heads and the key moment in the game came when Ipswich defender Brooklyn Kabongolo picked up a yellow for kicking the ball away after committing a foul, which came back to haunt him just nine minutes later, getting his second yellow for another foul. Stowmarket needed no further invitation and pressed home their advantage which came from Chris Casement whose long-range effort sailed through a packed goalmouth and into the net. The inevitable third came when Josh Mayhew’s shot was parried up in the air and Willie Clemons seized the gift bundling the ball and himself into the goal. Ipswich cemented Stowmarket’s place in the quarter finals when they went down to nine men, Tete Yengi sent off for violent conduct in the dying stages of the match. The Isthmian League North leaders play Basildon United at home on Saturday. Stowmarket Town Evan Collard 38’ Chris Casement 61’ Willie Clemons 68’

HISTORY The club was established in 1963 as a junior team named Armada Sports before becoming an adult club and adopting their current name in 1967. The club joined the Thurrock Thamesside Combination League for the 1967–68 season, before switching to the Reserves Division Two of the Greater London League in 1968. After finishing as runners-up in the division in 1969–70, they were promoted to Reserves Division One. In 1971 the club were founder members of the Essex Senior League (ESL). They finished as runners-up in 1972–73, before winning the league in 1976–77. The club went on to win the league for the next three seasons, as well winning the League Cup in
in 1977–78, before switching to the Athenian League in 1980. After finishing second in their first season in the Athenian League, Basildon joined Division Two of the Isthmian League for the 1981–82 season. In 1983–84 they won Division Two and were promoted to Division One. The club remained in Division One until being relegated at the end of the 1988–89 season when they finished second bottom of the Division and were demoted to Division Two North. In 1991 Basildon left the Isthmian League and dropped back into the Essex Senior League. They won the league and League Cup double in 1993–94, but did not take promotion to the Isthmian League. The club won the League Cup for a third time in 2016/17. After finishing as runners-up in the league in 2017–18, they were promoted to the Isthmian League’s North Division for the first time in 27 years.
GROUND The club played at the Gloucester Park Bowl from 1967, with their record attendance of 4,999 being set for their first match against a West Ham XI. The ground had uncovered seating along one side of the pitch, with a roof later built to create a 200-seat stand. In 1970 they moved to Gardiners Close and the new ground was opened with another friendly match against West Ham on 11 August in front of a crowd of 3,600, although they continued to play floodlit matches at the Gloucester Park Bowl until floodlights were installed at Gardiners Close. A covered standing area was built on one side of the pitch, but was removed by the end of the 1970s; a new, equally short-lived stand was built in its place in the 1980s with three steps of terracing. Two covered areas were also built on the other side of the pitch, one of which had seats installed after they were removed from Leytonstone’s Granleigh Road ground. Another smaller stand was later built between the two covered areas containing the director’s box. Floodlights were installed in 1979 at a cost of £10,000 and inaugurated with a friendly match against Crystal Palace on 30 October, attracting

a crowd of over 2,000. Plans were announced in 1995 to move to a new stadium on Courtauld Road next to the A127; however, the plans were dropped in 1997 due to complaints about the proposed development. Gardiners Close currently has a capacity of 2,000, of which 400 is seated and 1,000 covered.
