WORDS FROM THE MANAGER

PAUL MUSGROVE

WE ARE BACK AGAIN AT THE HOME OF NONLEAGUE FOOTBALL

PAUL M USGROVE SP ON SOR E D BY

7

We welcome you all to Greens Meadow this afternoon. We extend this to the players, staff and committee of Romford FC We are back again at the home of non-league football off the back a very hard game against Hullbridge Sports. This was a game which was always going to be a tricky game. We knew this had all the elements of a banana skin written all over it. We all need to remember where we are at and where we have been. We have no god given right to think any game will be easy. We always prepare the same away so nothing from our side changed from the week before. Now reflecting Hullbridge came and did a job on us in-terms of discipline and formation. We as a team played into their hands and did not have the game save to unlock them as we became narrow. I hold my hands up to this as I feel I got my team selection wrong. However we all learning and my weekend was spent thinking about it. We now move on and try and put this right. Todays game will be another hard challenge and will be similar to last week I imagine, lots of bodies behind the ball to stop us. I hope the crowd can again be vocal and spur the team on. You should all be very proud of yourselves for making a huge difference. The noise at Sudbury was brilliant. Please remember to respect everyone we come. We are moving in the right direction with 13 games to go in the league. I hope with your continued support we can all push together to see how far we can go. Please keep showing your continued support for the while club and teams as it’s massive to us all on match days Muzzy

STOW TOWN 0 HULLBRIDGE 0 SATURDAY 5TH FEBRUARY Match Report: Iain van der Ree

STALEMATE IN A GOALESS ENCOUNTER AT GREENS MEADOW High flying Stowmarket hosted Hullbridge on Saturday at Greens meadow in front of a crowd of 288 with the visitors fighting for survival at the wrong end of the table. Stow boss Paul Musgrove made several enforced changes due to key suspensions looking to extend his side’s winning run of form to six against Hullbridge who earned much needed wins in their previous two games against top opposition. The first half saw Stow pressing high up the pitch with no end product in the final third, Hullbridge having the better chances on the counter with James Bradbrook the busier of the two goalkeepers. The second half replicated the first with the Old Gold and Blacks trying to find a way through stubborn Hullbridge defences to no avail. A double substitution of Josh Mayhew and Kane Munday nearly broke the deadlock when Munday’s cross found Mayhew stretching for the ball only to see his effort fly over the Hullbridge bar. It was Munday again that found Mayhew running through on goal with a lobbed pass only for keeper Lewis Greene to smother the striker’s shot on goal. Hullbridge then nearly took all three points when a Tony Stokes strike hit the crossbar much to the relief of the home crowd. Stowmarket look to continue their promotion push and are next at home to bottom side Romford on Saturday.

HISTORY Romford FC was first formed in 1876 and played in the old Southern League until closing down in 1915. Re-launched in 1929 they played as amateurs in the London, Athenian and Isthmian leagues adopting the ‘Boro’ nickname in 1937 when Romford was granted royal borough status. In 1949 Romford contested the first Amateur Cup final at Wembley in front of a 93,000 crowd. Turning professional in 1959, during which time their team included such famous names as Malcolm Allison, Ted Ditchburn and Trevor Ford, Boro won the coveted Southern League title in 1967 but due to large debts incurred for

ground improvements in their unsuccessful efforts to be voted into the Football League they closed down again in 1978. REFORMING again in 1992, when local policeman David Howie convened an open meeting, the club joined the Essex Senior League, achieving 9th place in the first season and 4th place in the second season while sharing the Bridge Avenue stadium of Hornchurch FC. In 1994-95 the club was able to enter the FA Cup for the first time for sixteen years and finally won the Essex Senior League title and a League & Cup winning double in 1995-96 having moved to share the facilities of Ford United FC at their Rush Green Stadium. RYMAN LEAGUE 1996 – 2002. The Essex Senior League title having been achieved under a new chairman and management team a merger arranged with Collier Row Athletic for the 1996-97 season.. Boro then joined up with them at their Sungate ground to play in the Ryman League Division 2 under the name ‘Collier Row & Romford’. Reverting back to the name Romford FC in season 1997-98 they achieved a final 7th place in Division 1 and 10th place in the following season. In 1999-2000 Boro finished 4th from bottom in Division 1 and a disappointing 2nd from bottom the following season. There were some successes during this period, however, as the club were East Anglian Cup Winners in 1997-98, reached the 3rd round of the FA Youth Cup in 1998-90 and next season the first team beat Congleton Town 6-0 to reach the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup. In mid season 1998-9 Romford then had to deal with some enforced changes in personnel caused by the departure of the club’s chairman, team manager and a number of players. Unfortunately at Sungate there had been an increasing deterioration of facilities causing a number of home fixtures having to be played at borrowed grounds. Ultimately, having finished in last place in Division 2 in 2001-2, Boro resigned from the Ryman League, rejoined the Essex Green Stadium for season 2002-2003.

Senior league, and still with manager Paul Joynes in charge, returned to the Fords’ Rush

ESSEX SENIOR LEAGUE 2002–2009. With Paul Joynes still as manager Romford ended this season in 5th place. Joynes then moved on to manage Tilbury and the popular former playing duo of Mark Reed & Paul Rogan took over as joint first team managers. Successes during this duo’s tenure were a Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy 3-0 win against favourites Ilford in 2003-4 and an Essex Thameside Trophy Runners-up prize in 2004-5. The team reached a final 5th league place in the Essex Senior League in both those seasons. For 2005-6 Reed & Rogan had to rebuild the side after several key players left and Romford ended the season in 17th place. But the managers’ efforts were rewarded in 2006-7 with the club being runners up in both the league and league cup to double league & cup winners Brentwood Town. In mid 2007-08 Reed & Rogan stepped down and the successful reserves management pairing of Paul Martin & Mark Lord took over to begin a record breaking unbeaten year long league match run and a final 5th place. Losing the use of Rush Green at the end of 2007/08 Boro arranged a share with Aveley FC and, having won the 2008/09 Essex Senior League title, promotion back to the Ryman League. ISTHMIAN LEAGUE 2009-present Romford finished 13th in their first season back in the Ryman League and in 2013 recorded their best performance in the division so far by finishing eighth, having at one time looked possible play-off contenders. By now the club had moved home to Thurrock’s Ship Lane ground where they remained until 2018, when Thurrock boss Tommy South put the site up for sale, since when Romford have gone on to groundshare at East Thurrock United, and currently at B Romford will share at Barking FC for the 202021 season.

STOW TOWN RESERVES

Saturday we traveled to Holland Res who have been on good form of late, we have had a very hard run of fixtures last month with Walsham, Halstead and Framlingham. All not having first team fixtures when we played them & all fielded stronger sides than usual especially Halstead who fielded 7 first team players. We had a win against Walsham a defeat against Halstead and a draw v Framingham. Im very proud of my team especially being such a young squad this season. Saturday we started the game very strongly and went in front on the 16th minute. Reon Huckvale returning from covid placed a well driving cross and run from Frederico Dende. Top scorer Jack Wharton-Richardson moved his tally to 11 league goals with a well taken goal. After the half hour mark Jack then scored a 3rd goal on the stroke of half time but was wrongly ruled out for offside. The second half we continued the same manor but couldn’t add to the scoreline but fair play to Holland who pulled a goal back on 75 mins. We changed system and moved captain Graham into defence to try manage the game, we managed to get a very good 3 points at a difficult place to go.

STOW TOWN U18’S

Words from the manager Liam Hawkins Boys took control of the game from kick off. Working hard to win the ball back and moving the ball round the park really well. Stow unlucky not to be running away with the game going in at half time. We had the better of the chances and despite all our efforts we just couldn’t convert to put the game to bed at 1-0. Jack WR hitting the crossbar from distance and Tarek Elomri skimming the post from Cameron Taylor’s cross. A sloppy error at the back from us to concede drawing it back level. This gave Woodbridge momentum in the latter stages of the game and 8 minutes before full time the referee awarded a soft pen that the Woodbridge skipper tucked away. A few changes to the system that didn’t work but overall a learning curve we will take from. Certainly all be more wiser when we return to Greens Meadow for our encounter with Felixstowe & Walton in 2 weeks time. MOM – Mileeq Banya A real force playing out of position. Wasn’t a duel I don’t think he lost out in. One for the future definitely! All the best to Woodbridge for the rest of the season much more clinical than us on the night. Two great games this season! A special mention to man of the match Liam knights the 18 year old never stopped running all game, also Harvey Talbot, Frederico, Dende, Jack Wharton-Richardson, Aidan Phar and Reon Huckvale all put in solid performances. We now look forward to another tough away game v Hadleigh Res next Saturday, hoping to keep climbing up the table after a difficult last month.
