WORDS FROM THE MANAGER

PAUL MUSGROVE

WE ARE COMING BACK TO THE HOME OF NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL OFF THE BACK A VERY HAD FOUGHT WIN AT CANVEY ISLAND

5 We welcome you all to Greens Meadow this evening. We extend this to the players, staff and committee of Sudbury who are having an excellent season so far. Congratulations on your impressive cup run. When you visit Aveley you will know what a great facility they have and one to admire and aspire to build our foundations right in this league to achieve the same for our fabulous community. We are coming back to the home of non-league football off the back a very had fought win at Canvey Island. This we are all really pleased with and with consistency comes increased belief. We know there is still room for improvement and we are looking for all the small gains to get the extra percentages required to continue our push.

The good news is Josh Curry returns to bench tonight and this a huge boost for the team. Welcome back. With the injury situation came recruitment and we welcome Erkan Okay and Jesse Nwabueze to our club. Both great lads and I hope they embrace the culture within our great club. The squad is built on flexibility and when getting the squad together I had this in mind that platers need that versatility. This is proving to be helping at the moment in time. Also Alex Clarke from our Reserves is now in our squad and I hope to give him more minutes on the pitch. We are moving in the right direction and I hope with your continued support we can all see this. Please keep showing your continued support for the whole club and teams as it’s massive to us all on match days Muzzy

We are still struggling with long term injuries Dom Docherty who has had better news that maybe surgery is not need. Two months of rehab may see him back in a Stowmarket shirt again this season. Craig Parker hamstring will be back in the new year. Jack Ainsley achilles will also be back in the new year. We also lost new signing Tev Allen to a nasty head injury in our home game to Aveley. Tev is a strong lad and is now on the road to a full recovery.

STOW TOWN 2 AVELEY FC 1 SATURDAY 4TH DEC 2021 Match Report: Iain van der Ree

CAPTAIN, TOM BULLARD GRABS THE 90TH MINUTE WINNER IN A TOUGH ENCOUNTER. A lively Aveley were in determined mood at Greens Meadow on Saturday afternoon and proved to be stiff opposition for the Old Gold & Blacks. Paul Musgrove started with the same side that beat Barking 6-1 away last Saturday with just 3 players due to injuries on the bench (all strikers). Stow’s backline marshalled by Tom Bullard keeping the marauding visitors at bay with some stout and confident defending and both sides cancelling each other out for the majority of the first half. With half time looming an excellent display of passing play saw Luke Brown find Evan Collard running towards goal to score the opener and make it 1-0 at the break. Aveley upped the tempo further in the second half and showed why they were at the top end of the league table with George Sykes eventually getting the breakthrough and making his shot count for the visitors. Man of the Match and Isthmian League North Golden Glove award winner for November, James Bradbrook showed why he had earned that accolade firstly saving a penalty, then an instinctive save from a point-blank shot plus tipping a free kick over the bar to keep Stow in the game. A horrendous clash saw Tevan Allen having to leave the pitch with a broken nose and concussion and adding to Muzzy’s ongoing injury concerns. As the board went up showing 4 minutes of extra time, Reggie Lambe prepared to take a corner which Tom Bullard headed downwards and into the Aveley net sealing, what looked like for much of the half, an unlikely win for the Suffolk side. Stowmarket Town’s next match is on Tuesday evening in the Suffolk Premier Cup.

CANVEY ISLAND 0 STOWN TOWN 1 SATURDAY 11TH DECEMBER Match Report: Iain van der Ree

A RESILIENT STOWMARKET, DOWN TO TEN MEN OVERCOME THE LEAGUE LEADERS Stow travelled to Park Lane on Saturday afternoon looking to extend their 6 league game unbeaten run with new signings in the week Erkan Okay from Soham Town Rangers and Jesse Nwabueze from Ipswich Town in the squad. The first half proved to be a bit of a chess match with both sides looking to exploit any weaknesses in their respective opponents with neither side troubling the goalkeepers. A foul at the start of the second half saw Okay pick up a second yellow leaving Stow down to ten men, it was this incident that totally changed the dynamics of the game, not for Canvey as you might expect, but for visitors. Paul Musgrove set up his team to be as impervious as the nearby sea wall that protects the ground and the breakthrough came when Willie Clemons managed to breach the estuary side’s defence with a pass to Evan Collard running through on goal who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net. With Stow holding firm, no further shots were registered on target until injury time, when a Mathew Price shot was parried away James Bradbrook in the Stowmarket goal. Stowmarket climb up to second in the table, level on points with Canvey and with the mouth-watering prospect of an ‘all Suffolk’ clash on Tuesday night against AFC Sudbury at Greens Meadow, in which a draw or a win for Stowmarket would take them to the top of the Isthmian League North. HISTORY OF AVELEY FC AVELEY FOOTBALL CLUB was formed in 1927 and played in local leagues until 1939. Club activities were then suspended during the war years 1939/45. In 1946 the club was reformed and joined the Thurrock Combination. Aveley twice won the Essex Junior Cup, firstly in 1948, then retaining it the following year. Aveley gained Senior League status in season 1949/50 and were elected into the London League, Division One. They were Division Champions in the 1951/52 season. In the same season they moved from Lodge Meadow to their present ground, Mill Field, and were promptly nicknamed The Millers. In season 1954/55 they were Division Champions once again which was followed by election to The Delphian League in 1955/56. They competed in this league until 1962/63 with little success. 1963/64 saw Millers join the Athenian League. Full membership of the Football Association was granted in 1964/65. Season 1970/71 was probably the clubs most successful one. The first round proper of the FA Cup was reached along with the FA Amateur Cup quarter-finals, they were also Champions of the Athenian League. Aveley were elected to the Isthmian League in season 1973/74. Here they competed without success in Division One until they were relegated to Division Two North at the end of the 1985/86 season. Millers did however achieve two cup successes during this time. The Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy was won in 1979/80 and the Hornchurch Charity Cup in 1982/83.

The 1989/90 campaign was a memorable one for The Millers. Promotion back to Division One was gained with a tremendous end of season run-in to finish second to Heybridge Swifts by two points. This was followed by a 3-0 victory over Premier Division St.Albans in the final of the AC Delco (League) Cup. This made Aveley the first team from the lowest division to win this competition. After this the club slipped down to Division Three and cup successes were limited to appearances in the finals of both the East Anglian Cup and the The Essex ThamesSide Challenge Trophy in 1997/98. The 1999/2000 season started well with Aveley being un-beaten in the League at Christmas. However a turn in fortunes saw them slip and eventually finish 9th. This was followed by 6th place in season 2000/01. A roller-coaster season 2001/02 saw the club finish third behind Hornchurch and champions Croydon Athletic and gain promotion to Division 1 North. An excellent season for the Millers in 2002/03. Good runs in the FA Cup and Bryco Cup were capped by an appearance in the Essex Senior Cup Final. This did not go Millers way however with Chelmsford City winning 5-0. The Third Qualifying Round of the FA Cup was reached, eventually losing out to Canvey Island 2-0. A good run-in saw Millers finish in sixth place in the League.
