Sto-Ecoshapes Notes and tips
Form • In order to produce the manufacturing template, a DXF or DWG drawing of the shape in a 1:1 scale is required. This should include a scale drawing of the pattern and the individual shape(s) with dimensions. The joint width must be shown/included in the drawing (see Fig. 1).
Texture/granulate/colour • Due to the manufacturing process and the dimensions stipulated by this process, format restrictions apply in the case of linear textures (200, 250) and the application of additive colour shades (linear). Upright formats with a horizontal texture or additive colour are limited to a maximum width of 420 mm (see Fig. 4).
• The maximum format is 840 mm x 420 mm (larger formats on request); the minimum format is 30 mm x 30 mm and must undergo a feasibility check based on the material thickness (standard 4 - 5 mm, maximum 7 - 8 mm) and texture.
• Additive colour shades which are incorporated into the manufacturing process prior to squeegeeing will produce a linear result (can be used with textures 100, 200, 250). The result is not necessarily even (linear). Up to two additional colour shades are possible and must be defined.
• Patterns should not be composed of more than four different shapes (installation complexity, economy).
• Additive colour shades which are applied in the manufacturing process after squeegeeing will produce a non-linear artisanal result. Can be used with texture 100 (nonlinear). Up to two additional colour shades are possible and must be defined.
• Patterns composed of ellipses or circles will require supplementary shapes in order to create a complete pattern (see Fig. 2). • When designing facades with Sto-Ecoshapes, we recommend a joint width of 10 - 12 mm as standard to ensure flexibility when evening out the joint pattern during application. In the case of interlocking shapes, the joint width must be subtracted from the shapes to create an even joint pattern. • If the Sto-Ecoshape facade has a seamless design, a 1 - 2 mm joint is to be subtracted from the individual shape to provide compensation room for installation. If necessary, factor in a sufficiently large compensation joint at regular intervals. • Shapes with angles < 35° are to be avoided. More acute angles must be altered and adapted to ensure technical feasibility (see Fig. 3).
• Granulates can be used with textures 100, 150, 250, 350, 450. The application quantity of the granulates is variable (50 - 150 g) and can be defined. Granulates affect the colour appearance and brightness. • Country-specific light reflectance values must be noted and observed. • Additional smoothing of the textures is possible with textures 150, 250, 350, 450. • The AC Collection can be used to colour the shapes and joints. The colour shades marked with a circle in the colour fan are preferable (other colour shades on request).
• The corners of the Sto-Ecoshapes are formed with a radius of 1.8 mm, as the manufacturing templates are produced using a milling process. • Rectangular elements can be punched, depending on the desired texture, in order to achieve sharp, straight edges. • Prefabricated corner elements (external corners) may be available on request depending on the shape and texture.
The figures are not binding with regard to their colour shade and patterns. Due to varying production methods and product types, differences to the respective original products are possible and cannot be excluded. No claims regarding such variations as a result of the above causes will be accepted.
Sto-Ecoshapes Notes and tips
Application • The substrate must be dry and free from grease and dust.
• Make sure that no bonding and pointing mortar gets onto the surface of the elements. If the surface is soiled with bonding and pointing mortar, wash it off immediately with water. Smaller areas of soiling can be carefully scraped off after curing.
• If using the Sto-Ecoshapes on mineral substrates, prime the substrate with Sto-Primer. • Cladding requires an absolutely smooth substrate. Consequently the tender for renderwork needs to define the substrate with increased accuracy. In particular, avoid unevenness caused by integrated profiles and mesh overlaps, etc. The tender specification for installing cladding should draw attention to the need to re-process substrates that have not been prepared accurately enough. It is not possible to level the substrate while applying the cladding.
• In contrast to conventional wall coverings such as stone, there is no need for a separate pointing process with Sto-Ecoshapes. Immediately after the elements are embedded, the bonding and pointing mortar is smoothed with a paint brush or jointing iron (lancet). • Additional pointing can be carried out using the Sto-Pointing Compound to achieve a smooth appearance but with accentuated joints. The feasibility of this process should be checked in advance based on the shape and texture.
• You should plan work on the facade according to the path of the sun and avoid direct sunlight. Do not store the Sto-Ecoshapes below 10 °C (increased risk of fracture).
• In the case of the monochrome, texture-based application of Sto-Ecoshapes (with paint coat or slurry), the elements can also be applied in a “seamless” manner (without visible joints). Take note in the case of complex patterns!
• Complex patterns increase the difficulty of application.
• For the slurrying finish, we recommend a filling paint coat (e.g. with StoColor Silco Fill or StoColor S fine/coarse). Two coats of paint or slurry should be applied.
• Particular care must be taken when applying the Sto-Ecoshapes if there is a strong colour contrast between the joints and the shapes. We recommend creating a test surface first. • Curves with radii of up to 120 mm on buildings can be covered with Sto-Ecoshapes depending on the format and texture (check in advance!).
• In the case of partial use of Sto-Ecoshapes in combination with render, good workability must be ensured in the edge and join areas of the elements (angles, corners) when choosing the render texture (e.g. StoSignature: Texture, Standard-K; Stolit® K 1.5). The shape of the elements should ensure that this is the case! If necessary, adjust the colour of the bonding and pointing mortar to the colour of the finishing render (see. Fig. 5).
• We recommend taking the Sto-Ecoshapes from different boxes to ensure a uniform appearance after application. If using different batches or additional (later) deliveries, carry out a visual comparison before application in order to identify possible differences. In the case of Sto-Ecoshapes that are manufactured according to project or customer specifications, carry out a visual comparison with the corresponding pattern before application in order to identify possible differences. • We recommend laying out the elements on a horizontal surface in accordance with the specified pattern/installation plan prior to application. • If possible, start work on a facade side that is not directly visible, as the processes within the team will improve and become more coordinated over the course of the project. • When covering large surfaces and working with complex patterns, the surface should be divided into a grid. The elements are bonded in place from grid area to grid area, working diagonally from top to bottom (according to an installation plan if provided). • Bonding the elements in a linear manner row by row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) can lead to distortions and the exacerbation of errors. • Prior to application, sand the edges of the elements with the Sto-EWIS Sanding Board. This will make the pointing process easier later on. • 4 - 6 elements (1 - 2 m2) are placed in the fresh adhesive bed in the grid areas that have been created. The elements are carefully aligned (joint pattern) and pressed down by hand. Caution: if pressure is only applied to parts of the surface, this will be visible in the result! Full-surface pressure should be applied with a sponge float or a suitable roller.
