The modern interpretation of traditional shapes and details anchors the building in the city while also capturing the district’s newly gained self-confidence.
Arter Contemporary Art Museum in Istanbul Back in 2012, the British architecture office Grimshaw won the competition to build the Arter Contemporary Art Museum in Istanbul. An interdisciplinary team led by the architects created a multi-layered, dynamic and public building that serves as a vibrant cultural centre for all types of contemporary art.

The Arter Contemporary Art Museum in Istanbul was not only intended to bring artists and their audiences together and inspire and challenge visitors with the exhibited art, but it also embodies the building owner’s understanding of social responsibility. Starting with the concepts of transparency and fluidity, a complex building was created that has flexible, public spaces and carefully positioned large panoramic windows that open up the museum toward the street and visually connect it to the city. A three-storey entrance gallery in the centre of the building created a physical connection between Dolapdere Street and the nearby park at the rear of the building. A wide range of intertwining rooms, some of them with different ceiling heights, creates many opportunities for new synergies between the different types of art. Two versatile event rooms, a library, retail and catering facilities as well as different learning spaces complement the spatial arrangement. Depending on the incoming light and the changing light and shadow patterns it causes, the building envelope, which consists of convex and concave rhomboid-shaped 3D panels, offers an appealing and contemporary reinterpretation of Istanbul’s historic mosaic facades.
