Each of our 45min presentations focus on specifying materials and systems on architectural projects abroad. The lectures are presented by our technical team – Grant Littlejohn and Nadja Lavin – who bring a carefully selected range of material samples and 3D system examples, to encourage touch, play and intrigue. 1 How to Achieve Good Acoustics Type RIBA Approved CPD Duration 45 minutes A resource and inspiration packed CPD outlining the key attributes of an acoustic system; the design possibilities available including seamless, modular, curved surfaces, colour and texture; which types of buildings can benefit from a good acoustic system and how the control of sound reverberation can lead to improvements in occupier’s health, safety and wellbeing within the usual budget restrictions. Featured global reference projects include Louvre, Abu Dhabi by Ateliers Jean Nouvel; Qatar Facilities of Islamic Studies, Qatar by Mangera Yvars; MAXXI Museum, Rome by Zaha Hadid Architects; VitraHaus Weil am Rhein by Herzog & de Meuron; Dalian Conference Centre, Dalian China by Koop Himmelblau and V&A Museum Dundee by Kengo Kuma. 2 Specifying Façade Systems Abroad Type RIBA Approved CPD Duration 45 minutes A hands-on, material-led presentation that outlines the different insulation systems on the market and how they may be specified to overcome site-specific global issues of moisture control, humidity, solar gain, seismic activity or high wind loads. With a specific emphasis on architects working internationally, this CPD lays out strategies and criteria needed when specifying façade systems abroad, including local terminology, building standards, building regulations, quality of workmanship and expectations. Featured global reference projects include Refurbishment Verseidag Building, Krefeld originally designed by Mies van der Rohe; Heart of Doha, Phase 1, Qatar by AECOM & Allies and Morrison.; Knightsbridge, Baku Azerbaijan by Chapman Taylor; Coal Drops Yard, London by Heatherwick Studio; University Building, Vienna by CRAB Studio, University of Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan by Gensler and Maggies Centre, London by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. 3 Sustainable Building in Hot Arid Climates A Case Study of a Healthcare Clinic in Morocco, by Article 25 Type Mini Lecture Duration 45 minutes Taking a clinic for children with cleft lip based in Oujda, Morocco as a case study, ‘Sustainable Building in Hot Arid Climates’ explores the criteria used by architects Article 25 to specify materials, systems and design details for this project’s specific geographical, cultural and climatic demands. Through bespoke samples, technical details and 3D models this mini lecture looks at the challenges set by the building’s programme as a healthcare provider and the areas extreme climatic demands. We look at the influences of local vernacular architecture and delve into the logistical planning necessary for specifying and building in North Africa. The material and system based solutions specified by Article 25 are presented and how their attributes strike a balance between comfort and sustainability, through well managed acoustics, moisture control, humidity and solar gain are considered. Operation Smile Center opened in April 2019 and was designed by the London based humanitarian architecture charity, Article 25, supported by Sto and Operation Smile, a non-profit medical service.
