The Charge to the Senior Pastor-Elect Dr. Woods:

For nearly 2000 years, the Church of our Lord has set apart some members for preparation and consecration to serve God's people. The church elects such persons to positions of responsibility and service. They are called to serve the downtrodden and the disinherited. These persons may be preachers, teachers, prophets, bishops, or pastors. They are called to equip the saints for the work of the ministry, so the body of Christ will be edified. Therefore, Reverend Dr. Robert Charles Scott on this 30th day of April in the Year of Our Lord, 2017, I offer the following charge to you. If you agree, when appropriate, please respond, I ACCEPT. I charge you in the words of Saint Paul the Apostle, to be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, for as much as you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. So, do not seek to be more successful, seek to be more faithful. Never take as the aim of your life, fortune or fame, for neither can keep you near the cross nor lead you to your destiny which is the prize of the high calling from Jesus Christ. If you agree, please say, I ACCEPT.

6

Pastor Scott:

I ACCEPT.

Dr. Woods:

I charge you, in the presence of God and of Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and dead, to preach the Word; proclaim a righteous and relevant Gospel in season and out of season. Correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and through careful instruction. Listen to your flock. Work closely with them. Pray for them. Weep and rejoice with them for they are in your charge and care. As you do this, remember that pastoring is not a finely tuned orchestration. Rather, the pastorate is a calling that requires a willingness to accept the improvisational movement of God. If you agree, please say, I ACCEPT.

Pastor Scott:

I ACCEPT.

Dr. Woods:

I charge you to never develop disdain for a congregant. Instead, fall in love with these people over and over again. Your vocation, though also manifested through sacrificial acts, is above all to spread the love, grace, mercy, power, and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. If you agree, please say, I ACCEPT.

Pastor Scott:

I ACCEPT.

Dr. Woods:

I charge you to never take for granted your wife, Lady Pier, your daughter, Miss Charis, and your extended family. Do not take for granted your health or your personal relationship with God. It is your family that bears you up as if on eagle’s wings in your presence and in your Absence. Their generosity helps make your work possible. Your health you must safeguard for you know that your body is not your own, it is the temple of God and a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. And it is your personal relationship with God that feeds and determines all other relationships as well as determines the eternal destination of your soul. If you agree, please say, I ACCEPT.

Pastor Scott:

I ACCEPT.

Dr. Woods:

I charge you to always give God your best and be original. God desires to do something significant through this church and through you in this season. Appreciate your predecessors - Mayfield, Wertz, Drummond, and Moss - each of whom had their own charge to keep and God to glorify, but don't duplicate them. God wants to work through you. If you agree, please say, I ACCEPT

Pastor Scott:

I ACCEPT.

Dr. Woods:

And last but not least, as you take up this pastoral mantle, remember the gifts you have received to serve as Senior Pastor are not your gifts. They are divine deposits. They are the answers to knee-scarring prayers invoked on your behalf. They are the lessons of teachers and the knowledge of colleagues, strangers, mentors, and friends. If you agree to remember these things, please say I WILL.

Pastor Scott:

I WILL.

The Charge to the Church Officers and Leaders All elected and appointed officers of board/ministries/committees/auxiliaries of Saint Paul Baptist Church, please stand

Dr. Lynch:

Sisters and Brothers, this congregation has elected you to a position of servant leadership. It is a great honor to be chosen to help the Senior Pastor in fulfilling the work of the church. You now present yourselves to take the oath of serving with Dr. Scott, the disciples of Saint Paul Baptist Church and the wider community, through ministry and mission. It is appropriate that you now answer the following questions: Do you willingly accept the responsibilities of the office to which you have been elected or appointed to serve and do you promise to perform the duties of your office as diligently and effectively as possible? If so, answer: I DO.

Officers:

I DO.

Dr. Lynch:

Do you endeavor to lead an exemplary Christian life and to set a proper example for others? If so, answer: I WILL DO SO WITH THE HELP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Officers:

I WILL DO SO WITH THE HELP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

Dr. Lynch:

Do you commit yourself to personal spiritual development through daily devotions, attending a teaching ministry at Saint Paul, giving generously of tithes and offerings, and sharing the load of ministry with your Senior Pastor, the Reverend Dr. Robert C. Scott? If so, answer: I WILL DO SO WITH THE HELP OF JESUS CHRIST.

Officers:

I WILL DO SO WITH THE HELP OF JESUS CHRIST.

Dr. Lynch:

Will you promote the peace, unity, and effectiveness of the church; and, in cooperation with other officers, foster the blending of all efforts to fulfilling the Great Commission of Jesus Christ as it is written in Matthew 28:16-20? If so, answer: I WILL DO SO WITH GOD BEING MY HELPER.

Officers:

I WILL DO SO WITH GOD BEING MY HELPER.

Dr. Lynch:

Will you pray daily for your church, your pastor, his staff, and his lay leaders – that we may be effective in carrying out our Lord’s work? If so, answer: I WILL.

Officers:

I WILL.

I invite you to joyfully and lovingly enter into this covenant with your new Senior Pastor, the Reverend Dr. Robert C. Scott, realizing this moment in time was actually predestined in eternity, even before the foundations of this world were established. I charge you to be a spiritual community of love. You should also be a community where care and compassion abound. The ministry of care and compassion is not simply the job description of the pastor. It is the job description of this entire church. Be known as a friendly, loving and caring church. If you agree, please say, WE ACCEPT.

Congregation:

WE ACCEPT.

Dr. McGowens:

I charge you to eagerly accept and follow the leadership of the Senior Pastor. Encourage Dr. Scott to meditate and pray regularly; to appreciate great literature, culture, and the arts; and to attend conferences and professional gatherings where his gifts for ministry can be enhanced. Then, invite your pastor to unleash his sanctified imagination upon this congregation through profound teaching, preaching and vision casting that illuminates the mind, warms the heart, and persuades people to serve the Lord and humanity. If you agree, please say, WE ACCEPT.

Congregation:

WE ACCEPT.

Dr. McGowens:

I charge you to respect and work with individuals in position of authority, including lay leaders and the church staff. These persons are extensions of the church’s ministry and a manifestation of the Senior Pastor’s responsibility to equip the saints for building up the body of Christ. If you agree, please say, WE ACCEPT.

Congregation:

WE ACCEPT

Dr. McGowens:

I charge you to be committed to your own spiritual development through Christian Education. Also, support the work of the church through the faithful stewardship of your time, talent, and treasure. Attend the services and meetings whenever possible. Most importantly, pray without ceasing for your church and Senior Pastor and live in expectancy of the Lord’s return. If you agree, please say, WE ACCEPT.

Congregation:

WE ACCEPT.

Dr. McGowens:

I charge you to regularly demonstrate love, care, and compassion for the total well-being of your Senior Pastor. Also, encourage your pastor to maintain good spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional health. Insist that your pastor engage in Sabbath rest weekly, seek routine medical care, and take vacations as needed. If you agree, please say, WE ACCEPT.

Congregation:

WE ACCEPT.

The Charge to the Congregation (cont.) Dr. McGowens:

Finally, I charge you to joyously embrace change and never major in the minor things. God has united you with your pastor for the purpose of transforming this congregation, community, and even the world. Thus, do not waste God’s time with trivial pursuits. Worry less about the church by-laws and focus more on the Bible. Worry less about a renovation project and focus more on building up torn-down lives. Worry less about the budgets and focus more on God who can supply all your needs. Dream big dreams for God and wait expectantly as God transforms dreams into reality. Always remember our God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all we can ask or think. If you agree, please say, WE ACCEPT.

Congregation:

WE ACCEPT.

April 30, 2017 Reverend Dr. Robert C. Scott, Senior Pastor St. Paul Baptist Church 1401 Allen Street Charlotte, North Carolina 28205

Dear Rev. Dr. Robert C. Scott, Greetings in the name of Jesus the Christ, our Risen Lord, and Savior!

12

It is my pleasure, on behalf of the American Baptist Churches of the Great Rivers Region to congratulate you, as you celebrate your installation as Senior Pastor of the St. Paul Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. I confess that it is with mixed feelings that I write this letter. While it is true that I am full of joy for you, your family, the disciples of St. Paul and the American Baptist Churches of the South, I am also aware that your Call to St. Paul also involved a Call to leave the Great Rivers Region where you will be missed. Also, to your pastoral service, your willingness to serve on Area, Regional and National levels kept our Regional family better informed and connected to one another. I am grateful for the ways you have strengthen our American Baptist Witness in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. Yes, I will miss you both professionally and personally. But there is no doubt in my mind that when God draws and calls a pastor and a congregation together into a covenant, it is truly a “Holy Moment” that sits at the intersection of God’s great love for the Church and God’s great love for the world. Please know, your brothers and sisters in Great Rivers will be wrapping you and St. Paul in prayer not only for the celebration of your installation; but for the additional layers of service, and outreach that will flow from your union. As you embrace this congregation and they embrace you, it is my earnest prayer that God will be faithfully served and pleased by the witness of your ministry at St. Paul as you do life together in Biblical and Relevant ways. On a personal note, I will miss watching with sheer delight the love that flows so easily around you, Lady Pier and Charis. If I could be in 2 places at one time, I would be in Worship with you and the disciples of St. Paul during the installation weekend. But since I can’t, please know that I am excited about coming next month to meet the St. Paul disciples, to visit with you and yours as well as share with Lady Pier and the women of St. Paul at the First Lady’s Tea! Dr. Robert Scott exemplified “iron sharpening iron” as he gave of himself, his time and his expertise to many seminary students and emerging pastors in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. Dr. Scott raised the bar for preaching excellence during his years in St. Louis. Many students and alumni of Eden Seminary benefitted from the mentorship of Dr. Scott. He became a great resource to students who needed to develop plans for transitioning from seminary to pastoral ministry. He shared his wisdom freely and taught by modeling the characteristics of a successful pastor. I am one of my many students who are grateful for his leadership and mentorship. Dr. Scott on behalf of the Eden Black Alumni Association we applaud you and pray that you, Lady Pier, Charis and the St. Paul family will be richly blessed. Thank you for that which have posited in many. Your presence is missed but we are excited and know that you are a gift to Charlotte. To GOD be the glory! Blessings,
