President's Message

P

eace of Christ! COVID-19. As I reflect on the past few months, this seems to be where I always land. It is the recurring theme in my examen; it is the dominant story in the news, and it has impacted our community as it has yours. It is omnipresent. I have had the grace of experiencing the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius a number of times. Each time I have felt a profound and personal call to take up the challenge that the Exercises offer. I never knew why I was called each of these times but I certainly did when I finished them each May. The first time was in 1996, and as it turned out, this was the year that our third child was born, and then two months later, I suddenly lost my father. The second time was in 2004 when our family moved to Washington, where I had the honour to serve as principal of a Jesuit school, Gonzaga Prep. The third time is this year, albeit in a different way than in the past. This year, I am walking with one of our seniors as his director as he journeys through the Spiritual Exercises. In each of these instances, I was able to discern what I believe was God’s desire for me and trust in the path He was pointing me towards, the path offered through the Spiritual Exercises. The Exercises have helped me navigate some very challenging and exciting times in my life. They have provided me with a lens to see and experience the world around me, to see God in all things.

of us " All associated with St.

Paul’s High School are people of magis... It is because of this that I look forward to the future with great optimism and promise.

Friday, March 13th, 2020, was the last time we saw our students at the school. It was Winter Sports Day, a day filled with many fun activities; it was also the day that the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. My words to the boys at the end-of-day assembly focused on giving thanks for the fun-filled day they had, best wishes for our teams headed to Provincials and our dinner-theatre actors as they prepared for the play, and the breaking news of what was now a pandemic. Additionally, I covered the procedures that would be implemented the following week to fight the spread of the virus at the school. The risk to Canadians on that day was still described as “low”. None of us knew that would be our last time together for quite some time and that none of those events would take place. The days following March 13th have been challenging for all of us. This virus has been particularly hard on our infirmed Jesuits. To date, we have lost five Jesuits in the René Goupil House infirmary in Pickering, Ontario.1 May they Rest in Peace. Our staff, students and families have shown great courage and commitment to move forward and to overcome. Our teachers have worked incredibly hard to learn how to deliver a high quality, yet very different, Ignatian education remotely. Our students and in particular the Class of 2020, have found ways to remain connected to each other and the school. Our Alumni have modelled their formation and our Ignatian values in so many ways in the community. Throughout these past few weeks, the Lord has provided many, many moments of grace and hope. My heart has truly been filled with gratitude. Grace and hope, for me, are two of the dispositions that I am reminded of daily through the Spiritual Exercises, and have carried St. Paul’s through these unprecedented times. Magis is an Ignatian term, and it means striving for excellence, a determination to do more, an unwillingness to settle for the familiar or status quo. It is magis that prepares all of us so well for this time in our history. All of us associated with St. Paul’s High School are people of magis and people of hope. It is because of this that I look forward to the future with great optimism and promise. I firmly believe that we will come through this and be a better, deeper and stronger community and school. Please continue to look after yourselves, your families, your friends and each other. Be safe, be well and say your prayers!

"

Kevin Booth '78 President 1. Our hearts and prayers go out to our Jesuit brothers from René Goupil House, the Jesuit infirmary community in Pickering, Ontario. Five Jesuits have died due to complications related to COVID-19, Mr. George O’Neill, S.J., Fr. Michael Hawkins, S.J., Fr. Peter Larisey, S.J., Fr. Norman Dodge, S.J., Fr. Francis Xavier Johnson, S.J. Two other Jesuits are in critical condition. Please pray for these men, those that care for them and their families. AMDG.

The 2019-2020 Cross Country Season will be one to remember for the Crusaders. Both the Junior Varsity (JV) and Varsity teams won the Athletics Manitoba Milk Run, and were both crowned MHSAA Provincial Cross Country Champions. Grade nine runner Siwon Jengsuksavat led the Junior Cru by winning the individual provincial title. He was closely followed by Ryan Kulbacki (2nd), Alex Sala (5th) Kephren Gould (6th), and Lorence Dela Cruz (8th).

The 2019 Crusader Football season was one of change. For the first time in more than a decade, St. Paul’s fielded two football teams - one Varsity team and one Junior Varsity team. The Varsity team had a number of veterans from the 2018 season who were determined to return to the ANAVETS Bowl for another opportunity to claim the top division of the Winnipeg High School Football League. The season saw several rare weather events occur - a lightning storm shortened Homecoming 2019, and a Thanksgiving snowstorm saw an entire week of Varsity football cancelled, extending the season by one week! Through it, all the members of the 2019 Varsity Crusaders kept their focus on their ultimate goal. In the playoffs, the Varsity Crusaders played some of their best football and were able to capture the ANAVETS Bowl convincingly. Congratulations, to all players and coaches on a great season.

“This year’s volleyball team was one of the most talented teams in Crusader Volleyball history”, says Coach Voth.

The Varsity team was led by an entire team of grade 11’s. The team consisted of Alex MacMillan, Nic and Matteo De Stefano, Avery Stubbings and Maheep Reshia. Next year they will try and be one of only a few teams in Manitoba to ever win four straight championships (2x JV, 2x Varsity). Congratulations to the more than 30 runners that trained hard throughout the fall and represented the school with heart and determination.

The team played in four finals in their first four tournaments of the year. The Crusaders won one tournament and lost to three different teams along the way. Those four teams made it to the provincial finals, at the end of the year. Because of a tiered West Winnipeg Athletic Conference (W.W.A.C.) league, we also played the Westwood Warriors a record of 10 times over the season. We won five of those contests. The last two matches went five sets, and a 2-point spread determined both. In the end, the Crusaders captured the W.W.A.C. league championship. The Crusaders then travelled to Steinbach to defeat a feisty Brandon Vikings team in the Provincial semi-final game. The next round, the Crusaders lost to the Westwood Warriors by two points in the 5th set, dashing the Crusader dream of another provincial championship. The Crusaders were awarded a record number of provincial graduating all-stars- six in total: James Duerksen, Justin Cross, Eric Loewen, Scott Mann, Josh Stackiw, and Yaroslav Paches. Justin Cross was named the number one player in the province and James Duerksen was selected to receive the prestigious Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Scholarship. A record three players were recruited to join the All-Manitoba team - Justin Cross, Scott Mann, and James Duerksen. Look for these players to be playing C.I.S. volleyball next year!

The St. Paul’s High School Dramatic Society was thrilled to present Robin Hood, by Dan Nigro, December 6-8, 2019.

2019 marked St. Paul’s High School’s firstever participation in the World Scholar’s Cup, an academic competition that tests skills in debating, essay writing, and academic knowledge. After qualifying at the Winnipeg regional round, two teams from St. Paul’s went to Sydney, Australia, in an attempt to qualify for the World Tournament of Champions held at Yale in mid-November. There, the teams did excellently, finishing first and third in the essay writing competitions, and third and eleventh in debate. This qualified them for the Yale Tournament of Champions, from which they returned in November having finished 65th and 85th overall in the world, a decent standing given it was their first effort at this event.

Our musicians have been busy. On November 5th, Robbie Gerstner and Jay Na performed at the St. Paul's High School Tribute Dinner, while the Grades 11/12 Concert Band performed at the Remembrance Day Liturgy on November 8th. The Advent Music Concert followed shortly afterwards on Tuesday, November 26th. It was extremely well-attended, with upwards of 400 guests. Parents, grandparents, siblings, and friends were treated to performances from the Introductory Band, Grades 9/10 Concert Band, Grades 11/12 Concert Band, Junior Jazz Band, and Senior Jazz Band, as well as the Junior & Senior Choirs. We thank the St. Paul's Community for its support of the Performing Arts at our school.

Delightfully directed by Mr. Comeault and Ms. Toutant, the play was beautifully produced by Mr. Adair and Ms. Janzen. Several dozen students, tirelessly working on and in the set, transformed Murray Hall into a window to a gorgeous Sherwood Forest and an imposing Nottingham Castle. The noble Robin (Noah Banmann ’20) and his merry band, the delightful Maid Marian (Nicoletta Kaluzny), the horrible Prince John (Greg Karvelas ’20), his sleepy mother (Grace MacPherson), and the ludicrous Sheriff (Navin Vanderwert ’20), brought the familiar tale back to us in a new light, one that made all laugh but also wonder differently about the environment and social justice. The play was enthusiastically received by scores of students and the larger community of St. Paul’s High School. There were multiple enthusiastic ovations. Congratulations on an outstanding performance! plenty of singing, heaps of dancing, and scrumptious period food and drink.

In many ways, the greatest strength of participating in the World Scholar’s Cup is that it brings together students from such different global contexts, inviting them to work together and recognize each other’s common humanity. St. Paul’s congratulates the six student competitors— Noah Banmann ’20, Tommy Feldman ’20, Chris George ’20, Brock Nykoluk ’20, Rohan Sethi ’20, and Navin Vanderwert ’20—and looks forward to many more WSC events in years to come!

Robotics This year the Robotics Club has been working on completing their mini-sumo robots and coding Edison Robots, with the intent to compete in the Manitoba Robot Games on March 21st. Due to COVID-19, the games have been postponed. This past term, students worked diligently to build a Lego Mindstorm EV3 (pictured on the right) and a Lego Rally Car (pictured to the left).

On October 23, 2019, more than 60 St. Paul's High School alumni attended the Alumni Associations Speaker Series presentation on Four Generations of Puchniaks. The interview left our Alumni with a feeling of awe and inspiration. The Puchniak family spoke to the timelessness of becoming "Men for Others" – and how, despite generational gaps, what ties them together is the values instilled from their education. Thank you to everyone who attended.

On Friday, December 6, 2019, we held our 3rd Annual Alumni Drama Reception. It was an informal get-together before the school’s winter production of Robin Hood. Alumni covering many generations came out to catch up over some wine and cheese before the play. Thanks to Dan Kulas ’10, Gordon Auld ’10, and The Winehouse for sponsoring the evening, as well as to Paul Agasino ’15 for his hard work in putting it all together.

On Thursday, December 12, 2019, a group of over 40 alumni, family, and friends got together to bring some holiday spirit to deserving families across the city by delivering hampers for Winnipeg's Christmas Cheer Board. Afterwards, everyone assembled at Torque Brewing (John Heim ’83 & Matt Wollf ’01) to watch a Jets game, reminisce, and enjoy complimentary pizza, courtesy of Coughlin Insurance. What a great way to end off another successful year. Hope to see you in 2020!

Events that Shape Us

Epidemic to pandemic, REFLECTION on crisis by samantha eadie, archivist

T

he 2019-20 school year will forever be marked in the memory of St. Paul’s High School. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the school, it’s students, faculty, and community have had to adapt to new ways of learning, socializing, and practicing faith. This article will reflect on the experiences of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic and two other significant events in our history, the 1953 Polio Epidemic and the 1997 Flood of the Century.

1953: Polio Epidemic The worst polio epidemic in Manitoba’s history arrived in the summer of 1953. Thousands, primarily children, were infected by the crippling disease. To combat the spread of polio and protect the most vulnerable, the Province delayed the beginning of the 1953-54 school year and cancelled all school athletic activities. Reflection by Frank Mayda ‘54 Mr. Frank Mayda was a student at St. Paul’s College during the 1953 epidemic. When Canadian polio epidemics peaked in 1953, St. Paul’s College emerged unscathed. According to Frank Mayda, a 1954 SPC graduate, the school was only minimally affected by the epidemic. The provincial restrictions placed on the school and sporting activities were the main impact. These restrictions left Mayda unable to participate in intramural football and delayed the start of his graduating year. Many of his schoolmates would have also lamented the cancellation of the City League football season. Mayda’s primary memory of the epidemic was a method of treatment used. He recalls that a serum (likely gamma globulin) was given to reduce the risk of contracting the virus. This method was replaced by the Salk vaccine in 1955.

building dikes. It was a close-run thing: peak flow was actually 6% higher than the Floodway’s designed capacity. To make up for lost educational time, we substituted classes for the usual exam period, a popular decision for many but less so for exemptees! Reflection by David Havixbeck ‘97 Mr. David Havixback, currently a teacher at SPHS, was a Grade 12 student in 1997. Q: What do you remember most about the Flood of the Century?

STUDENT FLOOD VOLUNTEERS A: I was in Grade 12. I’m pretty sure what they said is that Grade 12s could just go, as long as they were sandbagging somewhere… It was up to us to decide where to go… Sometimes we went south. Sometimes we were within the city… I remember…there were times that maybe it was more coordinated by the school. Q: How did the Flood affect your school year? A: We didn’t have much for classes because we were allowed to go sandbag. Now, I’m not sure if that was extended all the way to Grade 9s and 10s or if it was just 11s and 12s that were allowed. Q: What did you take away from living through this event as a student? A: I mean, you go out and you help when needed or do things when you really need to get out of the class and do something.

2020: Covid-19 pandemic Reflection by Bob Lewin

1997: Flood of the century Flooding in the Red River Valley is an annual event as rivers often rise in the spring. 1997 was no different until an April blizzard hit. The already high waters and late snowfall caused the Red River to swell. The water spread across the valley and swallowed the land. This natural disaster is known as the Flood of the Century. Reflection by Johnston Smith ‘67 Mr. Johnston Smith was the principal of SPHS in 1997. School closed for a day in early April 1997 as Winnipeg shoveled out from a Colorado Low. This was trouble as the flood forecast was already grim. By April’s final week, the Floodway had reached capacity. When the call went out for volunteers to sandbag, the school co-ordinated senior student volunteers to assist in low-lying riparian areas in and around the city. Classes continued for the younger students. VP Kevin Booth and teacher Ron Vanderhooft led the teacher supervisors while VP Brian Murphy managed other school affairs and I dealt with co-ordinating the support efforts and community relations. For several weeks our students worked 9-5

THE CRUSADER | SPRING 2020

Mr. Bob Lewin is the current principal at SPHS. Q: How has COVID-19 impacted the school year? A: COVID-19 resulted in an indefinite suspension of classes and the need to develop a plan to continue teaching and learning remotely. Closing schools to students has also meant canceling extracurricular activities, cutting sports seasons short, and postponing or canceling other important school events. Grade 12 students and their families have had additional challenges. Q: How has the school responded to the pandemic? A: The school decided to suspend classes before the official announcement from Manitoba Education. This early closure allowed teachers to begin preparing for online delivery and participate in training as we moved to remote teaching and learning. Teachers, counselors, and administrators have found new ways to support one another and the students and parents in our community. We have worked together to find ways to sustain and build up our community during the requirements for social distancing. Q: What do you believe the long-term effects of the pandemic will be? A: I believe our community will be even stronger than it is today. While it may take time to return to regular school routines and a new normal, the Crusader spirit remains alive and well. I believe St. Paul's will have a renewed sense of mission. We will feel more grateful for the opportunities we have each day – to learn, to laugh, to teach, to be in communion with one another – to be Crusaders! Q: As principal, what will you take away from this event?

A: The importance of family and my sense of belonging at St. Paul’s have increased because of my interactions with colleagues, students, parents, friends, and family members throughout the pandemic. I feel blessed to be at St. Paul’s! Reflection by Ian Macdonnell ‘20 Ian MacDonnell is currently a Grade 12 student at SPHS. Q: How has COVID-19 affected the school year for you? A: It cut my senior year short. I lost the opportunity to do so many things such as, senior prank, last day, last practice, last game on Connolly. It has left me with a feeling of emptiness. The last 3 years I have looked forward to my senior year and making it the best one yet!

DR. ROBERT PUCHNIAK '89 TEACH FROM HOME OFFICE

Q: What has your at-home learning experience been? A: It is different. I love being at home with my family. It has given me more time to reflect on my life for the last 3 years. I love seeing my friends on Webex and my teachers. I would not have enjoyed my time as much as I did if it weren’t for them! Even from home they are still encouraging us to be the best people we can! And that’s a huge reason for who I am today! Q: What do you miss most about going to school? A: The atmosphere for sure. St. Paul’s has a feeling as if it is a big family. I looked forward to my everyday interactions with everyone. I was super blessed to be on multiple sports teams and to have so much family in the school right now which has helped me connect with all grade levels. I miss the feeling of being an older brother and someone who the younger guys could look up to. I hope I carry myself in a way that resembles the type of men St. Paul’s helps create. I miss the smiles and constant jokes between teachers and students. Q: How do you think this experience will influence your life moving forward? A: This experience will make me think twice about taking things for granted. Throughout grades 9 to 11 I spent so much time wishing I was a senior “one of those cool Grade 12’s”. I feel as though I didn’t spend enough time appreciating what was happening in front of me. Now that my time has come to move on, I can’t wait to come back and support the boys!

Resiliency Reflecting on the events of the past, the determination and perseverance of the Crusader spirit becomes apparent. As the COVID-19 pandemic becomes part of our history, it too will serve as an example of this spirit and how our community is able to survive these defining events.

n November 5th, over 850 individuals gathered to celebrate Ms. Anne & Mr. Paul ’81 Mahon as they graciously accepted the 2019 Ignatian Challenge Award presented by Board Chair, Mr. Calvin Polet ‘93. True persons for others, this dynamic duo enamoured us with their humility, grace and involvement in their communities – all a reflection of Ignatian ideals. Emceed by Mr. Joe Fiorentino ’81, we reflected throughout the evening on the importance of providing equal opportunity education for all qualified applicants. Wadim Matochko ’02 shared his bursary story, one which carries gratitude for his education and the values instilled, which led him towards his career in medicine today (catch Wadim’s story on page 10). Thank you to all who attended, and thank you to all who donated that evening. From the Tribute Dinner, you collectively raised over $300,000 in support of the Bursary Fund. A special thank-you is due for all our sponsors; without your support, this event could not happen. The St. Paul’s High School community is extremely grateful for the support of our 26th annual Tribute Dinner and would like to thank everyone for making this year’s dinner possible.

y first memories were of a happy and carefree life. Little did I know I was being poisoned, as were other children from the Chernobyl nuclear explosion on the border of Ukraine and Belarus. Through my mother’s courage and selflessness, she brought me to Canada to give me hope and a better future. For her to do this, she had to give up her medical profession, a support network of family and friends, and essentially raise me by herself. By the time it came to high school, I knew St. Paul’s had a good reputation, but it cost a lot to attend, and our financial situation would not allow me to go. If you can imagine our situation, it was just my mother and me, she was studying during the day, working during the night and weekends, and trying to raise me to be a good and successful person.

WRESTLING TEAM

Luckily, I was accepted into St. Paul’s and I would be able to go, all thanks to the bursary program. I knew I couldn’t let this opportunity pass me by, so I had to work hard to make the most of it. Looking back, first and foremost, St. Paul’s taught me what I can do, not what I cannot the teachers and peers at St. Paul’s encouraged and gave me confidence. I knew any subject that involved using and comprehending the English language was my weakness. With the support of talented teachers, St. Paul’s afforded me the chance to explore my strengths and focus on them. I excelled in science, even taking extra classes. My teachers inspired me, and I began to appreciate and enjoy mathematics, chemistry and physics. After leaving St. Paul’s, these subjects became my strengths and have led me on my career path – as a scientist who develops new medicine.

So, I can say, unequivocally, the bursary program reflects the values of this community. Your support changed my life. n the last issue, I traced the history around the financial crisis which St. Paul’s faced from roughly 1964-1977. This crisis was rooted in the school’s not in a timely way realizing the full gain from the sale of its old property at Memorial and Ellice and was exacerbated by low enrolments. The debt and revenue problem was stabilized and then eliminated through the efforts of a group of dedicated supporters of St. Paul’s under the dogged leadership of Rev. Joseph Driscoll, S.J., head of school from 1966-1972. The story of how the school grew its enrolment continues here.

committee on change In 1967 the school graduated 59 students. Only a handful of these were not Catholic (I know this because this was my year!) and the class included the only visible minority student in the whole school. In 1975, of the 66 graduates 7 were visible minorities. By the 1980s, the “face” of the student body had changed considerably. Why this change? Just as the drive to make the school financially solvent was driven by the local community (with the support, of course, of Fr. Driscoll and the Principal, Fr. St. Clare A. Monaghan, S.J.) so was the drive to increase enrolment. The first initiative involved the Winnipeg-area Catholic elementary students. Lay teachers such as Nick Laping and George Dawson in 1968 began visiting Catholic grade eight classes to talk about the benefits of a SPHS education. They were soon joined by committed parents such as Lorne and Martha Evans as the program expanded to actual parishes, including those without schools. On a Sunday, one of the Jesuits would say Mass and a parent or teacher would talk about the school to mass attenders. George Dawson recalls, “Athletics were a great attraction. We even let students who had not yet reapplied attend Crusader football tryouts before school opened and Fr. Monaghan would come out and encourage them to re-enroll.” Another change started in 1970 with the arrival of Asian students, mostly from Hong Kong but latterly from Korea and Malaysia. It seems that there was no active recruitment on the school’s part of these students, who mostly came for Grade 11 and 12, but some students of the day believe that it was word-of-mouth from local people of Asian background encouraging their relatives to send their older sons here for a good education that would improve their English skills. But one of the greatest contributions to the school’s growing diversity came from the support of Winnipeg’s Jewish community. On the school’s Board in that crucial Driscoll period were Jerry Feigelman, a noted businessman and Sol Kanee, a prominent lawyer and president of the Canadian Jewish Congress. Fr. Obrigewitsch observes, “The Jewish

community connected with the Catholic community over their common desire for some measure of provincial support for their faith-based schools.” Another probable factor was that, at that time, Tuxedo was the neighbourhood of many Jewish families. Stephen Rosenfield ’72 believes that there were two kinds of Jewish boys attracted to St. Paul’s. “The first were the very bright guys attracted by the first-class education. For example, my friend Peter Druxerman won the Governor-General’s Gold Medal in 1971.” With a wry smile, he continued, “I was one of the other sort: guys for whom the public schools were just not working. For me, St. Paul’s was a place I felt I truly belonged. I was a person at St. Paul’s while at my old public school I had felt like a number.” The advent of more non-Catholic students spurred the school to look at its curriculum. The school’s religion program had remained much the same as it had been for the decades when the school was overwhelmingly Catholic. Rev. Eric Jensen, S.J., taught English and religion during the seventies and early eighties. He recalls, “When I arrived in 1974, only the Catholic students took it [religion] and were seen as using it to pull up their marks. The nonCatholic students did not take it and so got free study periods (which the others saw as helping them pull up their marks). I believe it was Pedro Arrupe (then the General Superior of the Jesuits) who suggested to the principal that we focus on values. Thus, was born the Values Department, with courses which everyone had to take and for which they got not marks but a letter grade (without that grade they could not get a report card or graduate). The courses involved Old Testament stories in Grade 9 (Joseph and his brothers, etc.), New Testament (Gospels and Acts) in Grade 10, and moral and social values courses in 11 and 12. The lay staff were also involved in the teaching, and not just the Jesuits.” This created a program which all students could take, a program which was responsive to the spirit of the Vatican Council’s stress on interfaith dialogue. It also removed a very visible division between the schools Catholic and non-Catholic students. This innovation also saw the beginning of the Christian Service Program which over the ensuring decades grew to be a fundamental and compulsory aspect of the school’s goal to create “Men for and with Others.” But in 1973, enrolment was still “touch-and-go.” With the decline in Jesuit vocations, the school increasingly was being staffed by lay people and lay teachers cost more than did Jesuits! The school created a “Committee on Change” whose mandate was to explore ways of increasing applications, especially among the Catholic community. This committee considered having the school go co-ed and/or having the school add Grades 7 and 8. However, these options were rejected because at their root they were a sort of “beggar-your-neighbour” strategy which could have weakened St. Mary’s Academy and also the parochial schools.

"the Jesuits recognized the importance of collaboration with the lay people in the St. Paul’s mission. the Jesuit approach was to empower others to find solutions and to welcome the expertise"

Larry Franz, teacher through the seventies and principal during the midto-late eighties comments, “I was glad that we rose above this temptation and instead decided to focus on altering our own approaches to reflect ‘the Spirit of the Times.’” A third change started to make itself felt during the late seventies. The Filipino community had been growing in Winnipeg yet it was until 1974 that the first Filipino student attended the school. Beginning in the late seventies more and more Filipino faces start appearing in yearbooks. Fr. Sam Argenziano, pastor of St. Edward’s Parish during the eighties, reflects on this change in the school’s population: “The Filipino community is very much like the Southern Italian community: there is a huge stress on religion, family and education. Parents sacrifice anything to get their kids well educated.” Initially, the students were sons of professionals but soon this changed. With the school’s new financial stability, priorities were adapting. Fr. David Creamer, SJ, who became head of school in 1982, was a powerful advocate for promoting the school’s bursary program in order to accommodate students of more modest means. Together with Board Chair Michael Leipsic, he made bursaries more available and members of the Catholic Filipino community were the principal beneficiaries.

Paths of discovery Fr. Creamer was also able to focus on improvement of the school’s facilities. Under his leadership, the school launched its “Paths of Discovery” initiative whose goal was to raise funds to improve the outdated science labs and to convert the now close-to-empty Jesuit residence to school use. With the improvement in enrolment, the school needed increased instructional space. Four new classrooms (including a biology lab) plus preparation space for the growing lay faculty were achieved. The eighties created the moment for Joe Stangl’s vision of a redress of the injustice perpetrated on Catholic schools by the infamous Manitoba School’s Question. But that story must wait for another time!

reflection As I reviewed the documents of this era and spoke with a number of the people who lived through it, what impressed me most was how thoroughly and completely the Jesuits recognized the importance of collaboration with the lay people in the St. Paul’s mission. Constantly, the Jesuit approach was to empower others to find solutions and to welcome the expertise which the Society might have lacked. St. Ignatius Loyola was very concerned that “his men,” with their hyper-education and extensive formation, ran the risk of becoming puffed up with pride and so the saint insisted that an essential aspect of their formation was the imitation of the total humility of Christ Our Lord, who, although being God, did not cling to his divinity but, rather, taking the form of a slave, entered into the weakness of our humanity. It has been this humility of our SPHS Jesuits which has enabled and empowered our school’s transformation into an institution operated almost entirely by lay people. Let us pray that in this new era of lay leadership of St. Paul’s we might imitate the humility and devotion to mission of our Jesuit predecessors. AMDG

n celebration of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ 2019 Grey Cup championship, this article will explore the early relationship between the CFL team and our St. Paul’s Crusaders.

Blue Bomber legacy at st. paul's The organization of the St. Paul's Crusaders during the 1931-1932 school year coincided with the formation of the Winnipeg Football Club, or the ‘Pegs, in the early 1930s. The development of the club - which was renamed the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1936 - attracted many skilled rugby-football players to Winnipeg. With their dedication to the sport, several of these early players became involved with local high school teams, including the St. Paul's Crusaders

1

According to our archival sources, the relationship officially began in 1932 when the high school team was coached by 'Pegs player, Francis ‘Toots’ Wiggins. Following Wiggins’s short stint as coach, the team was taken over by revered footballer, Greg Kabat. Kabat coached the Crusaders from 1933 to 1940, with a short break in 1936 to coach the younger teams. Under Kabat’s guidance, the Crusaders won the Manitoba Schools Rugby League championship title six times. This success was complemented by the 'Pegs' own, as the team won their first official Grey Cup in 1935. With Kabat’s departure from both teams, several Blue Bomber players succeeded him, serving in the role of coach and assistant coach. Counted amongst these ranks were Wayne Sheley (coached 1941-1942), Ches McCance (1943), Cam Doherty (1934-1935, 1946-1947), Harry Fitzgibbons (1948), Dean Bandiera (1951-1952), and Joe Zaleski (1954). A number of these coaches had a history as both a Blue Bomber and Crusaders player, including Steve Shiska ’33 (1936), Larry Desjardins ‘41 (1945, 1947-1950), Kas Vidruk ’42 (1944), and George Depres ’46 (19471950). The long-term relationship lasted until the mid-1950s when Joe Zaleski was picked up by the Montreal Alouettes. Since then, Crusaders coaches have been chosen from amongst faculty, alumni, and community members. Recently, this historic connection was revived as former Blue Bombers defensive back, Kevin Fogg, served as an assistant coach during the 2017-2018 season.

The early history of the St. Paul’s Crusaders football team will be explored in a new display in the Paul Albrechtsen MultiPlex, opening in the Spring of 2020. Please direct any inquiries to the St. Paul’s High School Archive via email at sphsarchives@stpauls.mb.ca.
