UNIQUELY ST PAUL’S

Pupils at St Paul’s receive an outstanding all-round education that prepares them for life and lasts a lifetime. Whilst we, and they, are extremely proud of the exam results they achieve and the courses they go on to study, there is so much more to a St Paul’s education. Whilst with us, we want them to develop a love of learning, to discover how to build positive relationships and to grow the confidence to work for change.

St Paul’s has a long, illustrious history of nurturing and inculcating scholarship. Pupils who flourish here are academically able, curious, creative and enjoy challenge. Some may join us as accomplished performers, some may develop a skill and passion whilst here, but all benefit from immersing themselves in the wide range of activities. And it is the daily engagement in and out of the classroom with like-minded peers, teachers and coaches that gently guides, blends and strengthens their individual characters. We are proud to be a single-sex school. We specialise in educating boys but we also provide opportunities for them to work with others in the wider community, especially girls. We want them to leave us equipped to play a responsible role in society and be the best people they can be.

The admissions process is thorough and has been designed to ensure that the boys entering the school will be happy and fulfilled.

This booklet provides a wide range of essential information, from how to apply and our admissions assessment processes, to the bursary provision and scholarships, in addition to highlighting the exceptional grades that our pupils achieve and their subsequent university destinations.

If you have not already visited St Paul’s, we would be delighted to meet you and show you what makes St Paul’s unique. We hope to welcome you soon.

How to Apply

Boys join St Paul’s Juniors at 7+, 8+ or 11+. Boys join St Paul’s School at 13+ or 16+.

Entry at each level is academically selective. All registered candidates will be required to sit examinations. If successful, they will be invited for an interview after which offers may be made.

We value the opportunity to meet prospective pupils and parents, to show them around the school, to explain what we do, and to provide a sense of who we are. In addition, we recommend that you visit our website to gain further insight into life at the school. Here you will also find our most recent academic results, inspection reports and policies.

Families are warmly encouraged to visit the school before registering an application.

For 7+ and 8+ entry, we invite parents only to visit St Paul’s Juniors for a small group tour. Once registered, boys may accompany their parents to an Open Day in November.

St Paul’s School

ENTRY AT 13+

Approximately 90 boys join us at the start of Year 9 from a wide range of schools, mostly from the London area. These combine with the pupils moving up through St Paul’s Juniors to make a year group of around 180.

To apply, parents complete the online application form, pay the registration fee and upload a copy of their son’s passport. Registrations open in Year 5.

The selection process begins with the ISEB Common Pre-Test. Parents must register their child with ISEB via their website. The Pre-Tests will be taken in October or November of Year 6, preferably at the applicant’s current school. If their school is unable to administer the test, they may sit them at St Paul’s.

At this time, we will request a school report from their Head Teacher detailing academic strengths, interests and character. This report and the pre-test results are reviewed and inform our decision on which boys to call forward to written exams. Parents and schools will be notified of our decision in mid-December. Selected candidates will be invited to sit written assessments in English and Mathematics in early January.

Candidates who perform well in the written assessments will be invited to an interview which will take place between January– May of Year 6. They will meet two senior members of staff who will each spend 25 minutes talking to them about their academic studies and extra-curricular interests. Parents will have an opportunity to meet a senior member of staff.

We will write within three weeks of the interview with our decision. There will be one of three outcomes:

• A place on the Main List. This offer must be accepted by late June in Year 7. Those attending a school which follows the Years 7 and 8 curriculum prescribed by St Paul’s will receive a place conditional upon continued good behaviour and academic progress at their existing school, including an unreserved reference of support from their Head Teacher in Year 8.

Those who do not attend schools following the St Paul’s prescribed curriculum in Years 7 and 8 will be required to show via school references that they continue to demonstrate good conduct and academic progress. We may also require them to sit the Common Entrance Exam in core subjects and achieve a minimum of 70%.

• A place on the Reserve List

This offer is an indication that we do not feel that your son currently demonstrates the necessary ability to meet the challenges at St Paul’s School, but we believe he has the potential to achieve this over the next 12 to 18 months. We are therefore making a Reserve List offer.

At the start of Year 8, (for those wishing to be considered), an updated Head Teacher report will be requested and candidates will be required to sit written assessments in English and Mathematics. Following this, some may be offered an unconditional place.

• We are unable to offer a place at the school.

Full details of the admissions process are available on the school’s website. Email the Admissions team for further advice at 13PlusEntry@stpaulsschool.org.uk

Many come from a range of London schools, state and independent, and some join us as boarding students from other parts of the UK, Europe and from countries all around the world.

Those applying for 16+ entry should be under 17 years old on 31 August prior to starting in September. The deadline for applications is Friday 27 September 2024. This is also the date for receipt of IELTS results from international candidates (please see page 10).

In September of Year 11 we will request a detailed academic reference from the applicant’s current school. Please ensure that the school is informed that they will be approached for a reference.

Entrance Exams

All 16+ applicants are invited to sit the entrance examinations in their chosen A Level subjects. Each paper will take 45 minutes. The examinations take place at St Paul’s School at the beginning of November. Overseas candidates may sit the exams on the same date at their local British Council providing we give prior agreement (applicants will be responsible for making initial contact and incur any associated cost).

The exam syllabi are based on the current GCSE syllabi. We are aware that most applicants will only be part way through their Year 11 GCSE courses and studying a range of syllabi. The papers are designed to test analytical skills and problem solving ability more than factual recall.

Candidates may also be required to sit a numerical problem solving paper depending on their chosen A Level subjects.

There will be a single paper in Mathematics. Candidates that have selected single subject Mathematics and those who have also selected Further Mathematics with Mathematics will sit the same paper. The paper is designed to test understanding and problem solving skills in algebra, geometry, numerical and graphical work.

There is no written examination for Art or Extended Projects.

Candidates selecting Ancient History, Computing, Economics, Philosophy, Politics or Theatre Studies may not have studied these subjects before. A detailed understanding of these subjects is not necessary. In the examinations candidates will be required to analyse and critically appraise supplied material.

No past papers are available.

The examination marks are reviewed and up to 40 candidates who have performed well in all their chosen subjects are invited back for interview.

Interview

Selected applicants are interviewed by senior teaching staff in each of their chosen subjects. Interviews take place at St Paul’s on Saturday 23 November 2024. Prior to the interview, candidates will be required to write about their interests, academic aspirations and motivations for joining St Paul’s School. No exceptions can be made to the date or location of the interview.

Candidates wishing to:

Board – will also be interviewed by the Housemaster and given a tour of the boarding house.

Study Art – will be required to bring a portfolio of their recent work for inspection.

Study Engineering – will be asked to bring any design work they have completed.

Study Music – will have the opportunity to perform a short piece of music on their main instrument.

Study Theatre Studies – will have the opportunity to perform a short piece provided by the school.

Information for International Candidates applying for 16+

Many pupils join St Paul’s from overseas to study for their A Levels. We welcome overseas applications and value the diversity these pupils bring to the school community.

All lessons at St Paul’s are conducted in English. The pace of learning is brisk and students need to be fluent in both written and spoken forms of the language. Candidates wishing to study for an EPQ should be at a standard to achieve an 8 or 9 in English Language GCSE (as a first language).

Overseas candidates are required to arrange to sit the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and achieve at least 7.5, ensuring that results reach us no later than Friday 27 September 2024.

If English is the applicant’s first language and they are attending a British School following the IGCSE syllabus, please get in touch with the admissions office to find out whether it is necessary to provide IELTS results.

All candidates will be required to sit the entrance exams in their chosen A Level subjects. These may be sat in their current country of residence providing we give prior agreement and that they are held at the British Council on Friday 8 November 2024.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to make arrangements with the British Council, notify us and bear any associated costs. Papers will be emailed out to the exam centre in time for the exam.

Successful candidates will be required to attend the interview at St Paul’s on Saturday 23 November 2024. As no exceptions can be made either to the date or the venue, please ensure that you are able to attend the interview, if invited, before submitting an application. Further details can be found on our website.

VISA INFORMATION

St Paul’s School is a UK Visas and Immigration Child student sponsor. Students who have been offered and accepted a place to study at St Paul’s School and require a visa to study in the United Kingdom will be issued a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference number. It will then be the responsibility of the student and his parents to apply for a visa at the appropriate time. St Paul’s School will make an administration charge of £500 for UKVI visa applications. St Paul’s School complies with the duties set out by the Home Office’s UK Visa and Immigration authority.

St Paul’s requires international candidates to have a UK-based Guardian for the duration of their time at the school. The Guardian will need to meet the requirements as set out in our Guardianship Policy and Agreement. This can be found on our website.

Founder’s Awards (Bursaries)

Pupils come to St Paul’s on merit, regardless of their financial circumstances. Free and subsidised places are available every year.

St Paul’s School takes great pride in offering an outstanding education to talented pupils, irrespective of their family’s financial circumstances. Each year there are funds available for free and subsidised places at all entry points for families with a household income less than £126k per annum on a ‘sliding scale’ relative to household income and assets. Nine per cent of our pupils currently receive bursaries and are an integral part of the Pauline community.

The amount of bursarial support awarded is decided following a detailed assessment of income and capital resources. The school assesses bursaries every year to ensure we are providing the appropriate level of support.

Any applicant wishing to apply for fee assistance should indicate so when completing their online application form.

For 7+, 8+, 11+ entry to St Paul’s Juniors, the families of potential bursary candidates selected for interview will be checked for eligibility by the Admissions department after the written examinations. If eligible, the Finance Manager will request details of the family finances and make the Bursary assessment.

For 13+ entry to St Paul’s School, assessments will be made in the June in the year prior to entry, i.e. one year and three months before your son would start at the school.

For 16+ entry, assessments will be conducted once an offer of a place has been made.

The parents of any successful candidate for either school may apply for a bursary.

For more information about the bursary application process, please contact our Admissions team at admissions@stpaulsschool.org.uk or scan the QR code.

The Bursary Calculator on our website can be used to determine the approximate percentage bursary award, depending on the level of assessable income and net assets.

* Household income is your total household income, before tax, minus £15,000 for each additional child of school age (including young adults aged 18 years and over, in full-time education). Please make sure you include state benefits, maintenance/separation allowances, net profits on self-employment, pensions, net property income, benefits in kind, dividends and interest. For example, if you have three children aged 6, 10 and 14 years, including the child who is applying to join St Paul’s, you would calculate your total income (using the guidance above) and deduct £30,000 to reach the final number to enter into the Bursary Calculator.

** Net assets include the full current value of any properties owned, plus any savings, investments, vehicles, money in business and digital currency accounts and any other assets, minus your outgoings (liabilities) such as mortgages, loans and credit card balances.

Boarding

School House is a small, friendly boarding house for up to 44 senior pupils situated on the school site, overlooking the River Thames. Pupils join us in all years, whether they live in London and want to reduce their commute by weekly boarding, or live outside the M25 or abroad and want to enjoy full boarding.

The boarding house offers a supportive environment, which helps boarders to concentrate on their studies during the week, but also grants them the independence and freedom to explore their many other interests. Besides structured and supervised daily prep time, boarders can use the school’s many facilities: some may use the gym, others the music school, another group might have coffee in nearby Hammersmith, whilst others relax in the House common room and play pool or watch a film together.

At weekends, we organise various trips including cooking classes at Leith’s, meals out in London restaurants, tours around famous landmarks such as St Paul’s Cathedral and the Science Museum, and high adrenaline activities like go-karting, indoor skydiving and paintballing.

The Housemaster, supported by the Matron and a team of House Tutors, works closely with pupils’ academic

tutors to ensure that they make the most of school life, but most importantly that they settle in, make friends and are happy.

In School House, we offer full and weekly boarding (Sunday evening –Friday afternoon).

Boarding is not available for boys below Year 9.

West House is our newly refurbished flexi boarding house for pupils who wish to board for between one and four nights during the week (Monday – Friday). Flexi-boarding is ideal for those who have a very long commute, whose parents are away for a period of time or for those who have an after-school or early morning activity.

Flexi-boarders have their own rooms and a common room overlooking the Thames in West House, but also enjoy access to all the facilities in School House and the wider school. They join full boarders for all meals in the Dining Hall and prep in the Kayton Library.

For further information, please email flexiboarding@stpaulsschool.org.uk

Campus Map

St Paul’s occupies 45 acres of its own green, open space on the banks of the Thames, giving our pupils the opportunity to play a wide range of sports all year round. Our campus is unique amongst London schools for the on-site facilities it offers – from boat house to theatre, art gallery to cricket pitches, concert hall to engineering workshop.

We encourage parents to book a tour of the school to see the range and quality of activities and facilities we offer, many of which have been recently upgraded.
