Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts Hometown girl Melissa Hughey knows a thing or ten about St. Pete, thanks to growing up local and raising daughter MacKenzie who is as enthusiastic about downtown as Melissa. Some of the family faves? “We like dining out downtown, especially anywhere up and down Beach Drive where we can sit outside and bring our dog sometimes to Moon Under Water. My daughter loves the Birchwood. We enjoy spending an afternoon at the beach, and we certainly have some of the most beautiful ones around. We also enjoy a day in downtown St. Pete checking out our amazing local museums, playing in the park and finishing up with a good meal.”

Hughey joined the Duke Energy Center for the Arts Mahaffey Theater in the beginning of 2017, and as the president of the Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts, she works diligently to achieve the foundation’s creative mission. Presenting all genres of the Performing Arts at The Mahaffey Theater and throughout the St. Petersburg, Florida area; funding arts education for schoolchildren and providing its member patrons with unequaled services, entertainment and cultural experiences.

town and even the Vinoy was literally boarded up. As I got older we frequently traveled to Tampa for dining, shopping and entertainment and now St. Pete has everything to offer. My friends in Tampa are now the ones driving over to St. Pete, which I love! The arts renaissance has also been extraordinary to witness. I’m so proud to raise my daughter in a community with such culture. I grew up attending and participating in events at the Mahaffey and I’m so happy my child has that same opportunity.”

Showbiz Sweethearts Cassis Brasserie was the perfect choice for Sunday morning brunch. I’m waiting for actress Eugenie Bondurant, who has just returned from the Cannes Film Festival. Time for celebratory mimosas. At over six feet, the girl really knows how to make an entrance. Even in a simple white t-shirt heads turn. No need to wonder if she was one of “THOSE” models on the runways throughout Europe. You just know the answer is yes. Today she’s jet lagged, but glowing. “I love that direct flight from Zurich home to Tampa.” Seems like yesterday the model/actress was shopping at Sundial, trying on gowns for her LA premiere showcasing her role of “Tigris” in the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. She’d just been to France for an appearance during the Sunscreen Short Film Showcase for her role in “Tiny Bacteria.” (The Victoria Jorgensen film with story by Marina Shemwell). Joining her on this adventure (and for brunch), Eugenie in “Tiny Bacteria” is Paul Wilborn, Eugenie’s talented husband and Director of the Palladium Theatre. We know them as the sweethearts of St. Pete (they live near downtown), where they moved to in 2009. The husband and wife team are creative collaborators off and on the stage and take turns in the spotlight. A mixture of screenwriter, producer, director, manager, acting coach, singer, voice overs, cabaret performers, actor, model, reporter.
They are everywhere, performing the American Songbook cabaret series at American Stage (she sings, he plays piano) and both are founders of The Radio Theater Project. A former reporter for AP, Tampa Trib and St. Pete Times, Paul is now the artistic director of the Palladium, THE spot for jazz, blues, pop, opera, dance, folk, comedians and more. Eugenie is currently a staff member at the prestigious Patel Conservatory in Tampa, teaches scene study classes at Andi Matheny Acting Studios and is a wellknown on-camera and Meisner acting coach. Even their love story is a version of Hollywood’s La La Land. “In 2002 I was the screenwriter boy Cindy Cockburn who meets actress girl in LA at a Westwood party,” he explained. Three months later they were talking about their future. Six months later they were engaged. Enter St. Pete and a job offer and then he’s running the Palladium, for ten years now. Downtown dwellers, where do they go to relax? “We love Banyon Café for breakfast…it’s our local hang out,” Eugenie confesses. But husband Paul has a secret place he likes to sneak off to at noon. “I love eating lunch at home with my wife.” They both agree their favorite date night is in the basement of the Palladium called the Side Door for music in an intimate setting. What do they love about St. Pete? “There’s ton of talent here. The future is now. You can find opera to comedy to drama. “ And what about the future? “We want to just keep doing what we’re doing.” That’s good news. As a City with a big arts heart, Paul and Eugenie are a big part of it. -Cindy Cockburn

Where To Play When to Stay Out of town guests come and go at the downtown Vinoy Resort, but for over 17 years now the “locals” know that Joanne Cherepon is the one constant you can count on for any request. She holds court behind the concierge desk in the historic lobby. I mean the Navigator Desk.
Les Clefs d’Or (French for “keys of gold”) is an honor. The designation confirms we’re dealing with an experienced individual who’s dedicated to providing excellent service. Renaissance Navigators use their passion for discovery to add creativity and originality to the way they deliver unique and personalized experiences to guests and associates alike.
The Renaissance brand calls her a navigator/concierge. She caters to quirky, unusual requests from all guests around the globe checking in including brides, celebs, politicians and star athletes ‘round the clock. (Strict privacy rules prevent any Vinoy associate from discussing celeb rumors such as setting up golf for Alice Cooper or birthday party favors for Cameron Diaz when she was dating Alex Rodriquez, but I digress.) We know her as a super star/magician. St. Pete is privileged to have the only concierge that belongs to Les Clefs d’Or USA, the only national organization of hotel lobby concierges.
Translation: she gets it done. “Our guests are not looking for the typical tourist attractions, they are looking to experience the town as a local. We send our guests across the street or across town to restaurants and bars, to shops and museum exhibits, and everything in between.” Personally, Joanne loves to walk around the eclectic boutiques and cafés of the “Edge” district. The Jersey girl dreams of a cool future as the city continues to grow - including the wish that our City “not get too big.” She loves the fact “St. Pete is a small town with a big city feel.” -Cindy Cockburn
A Way Cool School: Vets Helping Vets The Veterans Orthopedic Training Center After returning from Vietnam in the 1960s, New Yorker Charlie Barocas enjoyed a successful career for over 45 years. Known as one of the top orthopedic technologists in the country, he now teaches, gives lectures and can be found enjoying the St. Pete lifestyle overlooking the marina from the veranda of the Vinoy resort. Now he wants to give back. He’s trained over 9500 Orthopedic Technologists as the director and lead instructor of the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals. His passion burns bright, so he found a way to offer sunshine and positive vibes with a mission of “veterans helping veterans.” This Fall, we’ll welcome the national headquarters for The Veterans Orthopedic Training Center. “Our desire is to provide the experienced Military Medic a pathway to civilian employment in Orthopedic Fracture Casting and Bracing.” Thousands of Orthopedic technologists are needed at hospitals and private practices. Due to donations, there will be NO CHARGE TO THE VET. With the birth of the non-profit organization he can train 300 veterans a year, 24 students a week. during a one week class. Charlie’s innovative new company fits beautifully inside St. Pete’s new “Innovation District” with his office set to open this

Roger Dow is relaxed in a golf shirt, shorts, and no socks. His appearance makes you think he’s just another St. Pete fan like the rest of us, enjoying yet another bright sunny day. Nobody would guess he’s a celeb in certain circles and has been a leader in the travel industry for over 40 years.
“All I wanted to do was stay alive” he remembers. This was late 60s/ early 70s. He figured if he could use his skills speaking he might be able to stay alive long enough to make it back to Jersey. He taught soldiers what he calls “the booby trap class.” He served in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam, where he received the Bronze Star and other citations.

Making A Difference After retiring in January, I traveled to Cuba as a volunteer and plan to go to Greece and Poland in the next year. Travel is my passion, but I wanted to make a difference here, so I decided to volunteer at downtown’s Tomlinson Adult Learning Center, a part of Pinellas County Schools. I wanted to work with their English for Speakers of Other Languages, or ESOL which as more than 200 learners enrolled. Programs like this make me proud to be part of the St. Petersburg community. The ESOL students attend classes from 8 am to 2 pm. All of the classes are focused on learning English and include speaking, writing, reading and comprehension. I was impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and focus. They were from every corner of the world and most had arrived in

the U.S.within the last few months and were thrilled to be here and have an opportunity to participate in the Tomlinson program to help them assimilate. I was asked to work with an older student (Ana) who has been in the U.S. for many years but needed some extra help with her English skills. She was a joy to work with and thrilled to have a one-on-one tutor. From January through May I worked with Ana every week. We exchanged family stories, discussed cultural differences, practiced reading, did homework assignments, and prepped for her test to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. Her determination and tenacity proved to be great assets as she improved dramatically over the months we worked together. Every week after our tutorial, Ana thanked me for spending time with her. I learned a universal language working with the school. The power of truth, support and a “can do” spirit that transforms strangers into friends, no matter where they are from. -Lynn Lotkowictz

Magnolia Ball Breaks Records, Raises $4 Million for Moffitt

Grape arbors and wine casks transformed the downtown Tampa Marriott Waterside ballroom into a Tuscan scene for the 2017 Magnolia Ball on May 20. The ball hosted nearly 750 guests and raised $4 million for Moffitt patient care, research and education. Moffitt supporters Frank and Christina Capitano chaired this year’s Magnolia Ball, the most successful in the event’s 24-year history. The evening’s program gave guests a dose of the courage that inspires Moffitt’s work daily including HSN host Amy Morrison on her Moffitt experience as a breast cancer survivor. Moffitt leaders, including President & CEO Dr. Alan List, founder H. Lee Moffitt and Chief Philanthropy Officer Matt Kupec added their own personal messages. Cuban Ambassador Delights St. Pete José Ramón Cabañas, Cuba’s first ambassador to the United States in more than 50 years, enjoyed a visit to St. Pete with his wife Edilia González this Spring. Hosted by City of St. Pete’s Mayor Rick Kriseman and his wife Kerry, the Ambassador toured the town from St. Petersburg College’s downtown campus to the arts districts. A reception saluting the arts was held in his honor at the Dali.

St. Petersburg retained its sparkly crown as the largest LGBT pride celebration in the Southeast with more than 200,000 attendees. The city rolled out the rainbow carpet and put on a parade Saturday 6/24 the way St. Pete does best…with a colorful display of joyful revelry and a fabulous glitterati. The festivities began again on Sunday 6/25 in the Grand Central District highlighting local vendors, businesses and artists. Addressing the crowd were Mayor Rick Kriseman, Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin, City Council Chair Darden Rice, Chris Ballestra (City Managing Director, Development), Vince Lee (PierProject Designer), Steve Urgo (St. Petersburg citizen and supporter of the new St. Pete Pier). The Pier is part of the Downtown Waterfront Master Plan stretching to Coffee Pot as St. Petersburg strives to be a national model for waterfront stewardship. Also on hand was writer Randy Wayne White who flew in for the groundbreaking. White and his pilot whisked Mayor Kriseman and Deputy Mayor Tomalin off in a seaplane to tour Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille on Sanibal Island for some shrimp and talk about opening a Doc Ford restaurant at the Pier. A Georgia native, Alex Harris is a soul, R&B singer, actor, philanthropist and entrepreneur who credits Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Al Green and Otis Redding as his major influences. At the ripe age of twelve Harris went on tour with his band A7 made up of he and five of his brothers. Since then, he has had billboard hits, traveled the world and become well-known. He also created the Arts Conservatory for Teens (ACT) in St. Petersrburg, thanks to the inspiration of Carl Lavendar from the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Suncoast. By creating ACT, he gives kids 11-18 the chance to express themselves freely and encourage them to be creative and perform. Harris sings and acts with the young artists at venues and fundraisers so they can share their talent with the community. ACT helps them get scholarships, partners with academic institutions, the city of St. Petersburg, TASCO center for teen technology, other mentors and parents to foster opportunity for budding artists. Amazingly, ACT boasts a 100% graduation and college placement rate. Harris hopes to migrate this success of ACT from St. Pete to other communities in the future.

Animal Lover: Kerry Kriseman A St. Petersburg native, Kerry and her husband Mayor Rick Kriseman have two children, Jordan and Samuel. Together, the Krisemans have worked as a volunteer puppy raiser family for Southeastern Guide Dogs since 2009 and have raised eight dogs. Hope, who is 11 months old, is their ninth puppy. Kerry has always loved dogs. “Growing up, our family has always loved dogs. I grew up in a household that always had three-to-four dogs.”

A Lively Day From dawn to dusk, and into the wee hours, St. Pete’s under the artistic eye of photographer Barry Lively. Known for his party, event and architectural visual magic, Lively’s enchanting photos paint a journal of life downtown and all its sweetness. His goal has always been to “elicit curiousity and evoke emotion” through his images. Lively moved downtown from Tampa in 2011 and now lives in Old Northeast, where he can stroll to his favorite coffeehouses (Black Crow, Brew D’licious, Kahwa and Grassroots Kava) or to hang out in the dog park, taking down and dirty photos from a pup’s point of view. He loves the downtown adventure and changing landscape, a throwback to his childhood ambles. “I live among homes that are no less than 100 years old and I love it. It brings me back to my childhood freedom to explore different neighborhoods, meet new people and discover the excitement of what’s on the next street.” In addition to photography, a drone camera and his new 360/Virtual Reality camera, Lively collaborates with other artists on culinary photos, commercials, video and even covered SuperBowl and NASCAR’s Talladega Race this year, with a car wrapped with his name to support a local charity. The artist itch started early. With a fashionista Mom who gave it all up to raise Barry and his four siblings with his father, Lively says the art of photography starts with being embedded in the scene, easy to get along with and easy to confide in, putting his subjects at ease and looking their best. The calming charm that sets people at ease is his family’s DNA.

He didn’t have a camera until 18, and wanted to pursue photography, but his Dad convinced him to him to get “a real job” and he was a “suit in the credit card industry,” with great success. When his son went off to college in 2011, he decided to pursue his dream and “do something for myself.” He moved into a friend’s South St. Pete condo on the bay and unleashed his camera and artist’s eye. Where there is water there is life.. “I started taking pictures of the dock, wildlife and the “downtown” wild life. My photos are a journal of my life since I moved here, from Robert Cray and reggae from when I lived in The Detroit Hotel above Jannus,” recalls Lively. “I met some amazing people from all walks of life—music, arts, business, photography – and created a synergy that helped me launch my business, establishing a rapport with business and community folks and getting flattering pictures of people in action. His first paying gig was to photograph the 2011 Florida Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony where his photos ended up in the “Florida Sports Hall of Fame” in Auburndale. It took until mid 2012 when he moved to the Detroit Hotel to really get into the DTSP mix. “My balcony was next to the stage and I’d watch the crowd and concerts at Jannus, and got to know a log of people from all walks of life, from the arts to business, creating energy and synergy among these friends, ” he recalls. One of his first gigs was with Jerry Bohannon, Principal Financial, who invited him to Less Than Six Degrees, where entrepreneurs gathered to network. He and Jerry later founded Mad Men of Tampa Bay, staging popular events such as the July 4th party on the “Sir Winston”. “We’re going to be bigger than U.S. Steel,” laughs Lively, alluding to the famous Godfather movie quote. Lively’s client list includes Stetson, PureLife Medi Spa, RCS, Easter Seals, Casa, Heels to Heels, the annual Plant City charity polo event, realtors, Morgan Auto Group, Jump For Kids and others. He just had his first gallery show at Black Crow Coffee
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Company and will be a regular contributor to St. Pete Life Magazine as the “photo czar.” A huge fan of Chicago legend Vivian Maier and NY Times Bill Cunningham, his photos vibrate with emotional stories about life and travels. “Downtown is where I find my kwan, she is my mistress,” says Lively. “I’m thriving in the freedom of photographing what I want, not just making photos for money. Last year, I set my intentions toward destination photography, and I ended up traveling on assignment to the Superbowl in San Fran and Houston, and went on a passport stamping rampage with travels to Peru, Cabo, Croatia, Ireland, Bahamas,. “ Lively honors his classy well-dressed parents by dressing stylishly at the events he covers and his iconic car is a testimony to his whimsical spirit. His favorite sport? Hanging at his favorite spots, snapping pics of St. Pete’s StreetSeen. “There are a lot of characters, but the character of St Pete itself is what draws me out.” Some of his favorite DTSP spots include Brew D’Licious, Grazzi, Mickeys Organics (healthy wrap, juice, macaron), La V, Ruby’s Elixir, Del Mar, Sawgrass Tiki, Bula, Grass Roots and Muddy Waters. “I’m an equal opportunist when it comes to coffeehouses and kava,’’ says Lively. Barry Lively brings joy to people’s lives while capturing memorable moments. “Live the life you love,” isn’t just a quote for Lively, it is a way of life.

All That Jazz: Arturo Sandoval BY NANETTE WISER
When legendary jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and his band perform, it’s a free for all. “We’re always mixing up the repertoire, some old things, some new things including bebop, swing, funk, Cuban music and ballads,” says Sandoval from his L.A. studio. “It’s what I like most when I am on stage, to feel the freedom to go in any of direction, playing the horn or piano, or the maracas.” We saw it all first-hand, the comic Arturo holding the audience in his palm, the jazz virtuoso holding us spellbound with his jazz prowess and the storyteller Arturo, waxing rhapsodic and comedic about his friendship with Dizzy and poignant memories. As always, he ended with his signature Gillespie piece, Nights in Tunisia. Another favorite of his? Body and Soul, a moveable feast for the ears.

In between jazz riffs, Sandoval walked into the audience, chatting with the crowd as if they were old and treasured friends. If you missed him in St. Pete, catch his October set at Manhattan’s Blue Note where he will debut some of his new CD.
Making great music is a journey according to Sandoval. “The day you believe you figured it out already, you’re out of the picture,” he says humbly. “Making music is eternal, you have to keep dreaming and keep learning and be open to new information and new things. It’s the only way to grow as an artist.”
Sandoval performed in late June at the Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater. A 10-time Grammy winner, Sandoval was a protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie. He received an Emmy Award in 2006. In 2013, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama and in 2016, an honorary degree from Notre Dame.
Growing Up In Cuba Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town on the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of 12, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world.
Catching Up With Arturo From his home in Los Angeles, SPL chatted with Sandoval by phone, where he is mixing his upcoming fall album of duets with Pharrell, Placido Domingo and Celia Cruz, a follow-up to his popular collaborations with Justin Timberlake and Frank Sinatra. Sandoval’s also getting ready for upcoming tours to Japan (The Blue Note) and The Czech Republic, where he will perform a new piece Concerto #2 for Trumpet, a follow-up to his #1 recorded with The London Symphony. There is no pause in this artist’s repertoire—it’s go, daddy, go and he listens to everything on Pandora, from Latin to classical and straight ahead jazz.

In 1977, Sandoval met Gillespie when he came to Cuba on 48 hours on a jazz cruise which also featured Stan Getz and other big time musicians when he was asked to drive Gillespie around. “We got in a jam session, and Dizzy asked ‘what the hell my driver is doing with a trumpet,’ and that was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. In 1978 Iplayed with him in different tours, different bands, even a big band-United Nations—he was a father figure to me. He was a huge influence in my music. Always hungry for information and share his knowledge of music with anybody, any moment anytime.” It’s All About The Beat Said one patron the night of the concert: “His music makes my toes tingle. You don’t just listen to it. The beat gets inside you and moves everything around in a good way.” Juggling jazz styles from bebop to freeform, you can see the dedication that drives the man who practices daily and says that “if you don’t evolve and learn, your music doesn’t get better.”
Sandoval is one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. As a founding member of the Grammy-winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world, Sandoval formed his own legendary band in 1981. In addition to his foundation for young musicians, Sandoval gives university workshops to keep jazz alive. “We need to encourage the passion for jazz and music for the next generation since we don’t get much support from commercial radio stations and media, who focus on pop and country music.” says Sandoval, who points out that Asia and Europe showcase jazz on TV and radio. “Jazz is a very authentic sound, most beautiful and it’s light will never extinguish.”

Fashion is so fun!! Don’t be afraid to break out of your comfort zone and experiment with color this year. Start small and add that pop of color to your classic black and white outfit. Summer Suit Style: There are special suit styles and materials for the summer that the sharp-dressed man can have fun with, and look more party-ready than business meeting stuffy. Breathability is the most important general aspect of summer wear. A loose weave, and lightweight fabric are important as well. Tropical worsted wool, seersucker and linen work well here. Seersucker: The classic summer suit is the Seersucker. It’s been around since the early 1900s, and is still a classic style. Seersucker is a puckered, striped, lightweight cotton fabric which facilitates air circulation to help keep you cool. The most common version is striped in blue and white, but you can also find seersucker in pink, tan, and olive. I even have a multi-colored seersucker jacket that I found at a thrift store. A nice thing about seersucker is that it doesn’t wrinkle, so it needs no ironing.
Cotton, Gabardine & Silk: After seersucker and linen, 100% cotton lightweight suits work well in lighter colors, pastels, whites, tans, and light browns. Gabardine and silk are great choices and blends work too. I have a great cream colored summer jacket that is 55% silk and 45% cotton, which is super comfortable and dapper.

Hot weather isn’t an excuse for not looking sharp. Linen: The opposite of seersucker in the wrinkling and ironing department is another classic summer material. Mentioned in the Bible, linen was woven more than four thousand years ago, and in 2013, Leonardo DiCaprio looked spectacular in it in his pink pinstripe and ivory linen suits in The Great Gatsby. Linen is another material that breathes to help you chill during the hotter months. Don’t worry about the wrinkles. That’s the laid-back nature of linen- it wrinkles – it’s supposed to look like that.
Make It Madras: Want to stand out at a social event? A Madras sports jacket is a summer Brooks Brother-type classic only a few can pull off. Madras is actually a pattern rather than a material. Strands of cotton are dyed in different colors and then loosely woven together to form a loud plaid pattern of bright colors in a lightweight material meant to be comfortable in hot, humid weather. For a little extra panache with your hot weather threads, add a classic summer style of two-toned spectator shoes, or suede bucks.

Vintage Garden Parties St. Pete resident and teacher Catherine Smith is a vintage buff who loves to host backyard garden parties with her found treasures. “I wandered into Jade’s Antiques on Central, back in 1998 and made my first vintage buy Mrazek Czech pottery. I was hooked,” she recalls. At first, she lived in an old house on Beach Drive (now a condo) that had a gorgeous Gothic fireplace in a log cabin living room. Every weekend, she foraged the Central Ave. shops, including the Gas Plant Antique Arcade. When she found her cozy Central Oak Park home with a large backyard, she decorated with vintage finds (stove, toaster, accessories) and planted a butterfly garden. After years of collecting vintage glass and tablecloths, the backyard garden parties evolved. Says Smith: “Everyone looks forward to my vintage glam table settings and the moveable feast of salads, soups, stews, barbeque or authentic Thai.” In addition to collecting wonderful memories, Smith gives kudos to DTSP’s vintage shops for nurturing her creative adventures

Is there anything more contagious than… laughter? Yet, it’s been observed that toddlers laugh more than 300 times a day, while the average adult only laughs a handful of times each day. What’s happened to our sense of humor? Health professionals have long known that life is better when you’re laughing. Even before modern medical science proclaimed that laughter is good medicine, Proverbs 17:22 taught us, “A happy heart is like a good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing.” The late comedienne Phyllis Diller noted, “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.” So why aren’t we laughing more, and enjoying a healthy sense of humor? It’s time to promote laughter and a positive sense of humor – IF we want to reduce heart disease, find a more natural way to diminish pain, lower blood pressure, strengthen our immune system, increase our energy level, improve our breathing, lose weight, find an antidote to conflict, increase our feel good endorphins while improving our mood, sleep better, reduce stress and anxiety, and promote a more youthful appearance. That’s quite a list, right? Grow happier with these 5 steps, what I call the S.M.I.L.E Model for Happiness:

Savor: If you want to turbo-fuel your optimism, just linger, mindfully focus on and prolong your enjoyment of whatever it is that you are doing for just a moment or two whether it’s in the past, the future or the present. By the way, be sure to savor your personal dreams and goals. How many more studies do you really need to know that being hopeful with an optimistic and meaningful sense of purpose in life, one that you savor and enjoy fully will leave you happier?

Me: Recent research by Kristin Neff, Ph.D., has found that self-compassion is linked to positivity, happiness, and health. We need “me” time for our happiness to unwind, allow time for self-discovery, reboot our brains, improve our focus and promote our relationships. How can you get more “me” time? Close your office door if you have one, wake up a bit earlier and savor the quiet time alone, unplug those devices or go for a walk during the workday.

Interact: Spending time with others expressing kindness and generosity, doing good deeds for others, can reduce stress, diminish anger, promote social connections and increase happiness. Water cooler or Starbucks time with others can surely leave you feeling better – just stay away from those who drag and weigh you down. Find the
lifters and thrusters in life and fill your calendar with them. Give more of yourself and interact more with others and your life satisfaction will increase, and with it, your health. Simply expressing gratitude to others can increase happiness by 25% according to Bob Emmons, Psychology Professor at the University of California, Davis. He says that, “A few hours writing a gratitude journal over 3 weeks can create an effect that lasts 6 months if not more.”

Listen: Whether you enjoy listening to birds chirping in your neighborhood, enjoy the wonderfully joyful noise of your children or grandchildren playing, listening to wonderful music that fits your taste and mood, or the lovely chit chat of a loved one or friend, this can all promote your wellbeing, lift your spirits and happiness and increase your health as well.

Empathize: Do you really care about others? Are you able to put yourself in their shoes? Can you relate with others free of judgment? The more you can and do, the happier you’ll feel. It appears that one overall sure-fire way to grow happiness, and thereby promote health, is to keep your focus on other people, not things, and certainly not the things that others have that you don’t but believe you should. In fact, the less you “should on yourself, others, and life in general,” the more you accept life, the happier you’ll be.

Have Board, Will Paddle Jeffrey Abbaticchio loves living downtown, where the people are friendly and a paddleboard adventure is just a kiss away. “I love that it is a walkable community,” he says. “Once I park my car on Friday, I rarely get in again until Monday.” Some of his favorite outings including petsitting for his pals’ pooches. “There are so many places to take them, to restaurants, walks along the water and dog parks. THE COCKTAIL CONNOISSEUR Nueva Cantina Margaritas The Caliente Picante fresh is spicy at the top of the heat meter and made with cucumber, fresh muddled jalapeño, and mango combined with Corazon Blanco Tequila for a Margarita with sweet heat. The Dali is a fruity but not overly sweet blend of Milagros Blanco Tequila, blackberries, mint, and fresh lemon juice topped off with champagne.
ITALIAN DELIGHTS Gratzzi Chef Tony Mangiafico and co-owner / General Manager Domenic D’Angelo are both from Sicily and bring great authenticity to the food and atmosphere. Many of their recipes come from the old country, and some are centuries old. They offer fine dining with a family atmosphere and there’s something for everyone from the classics that everyone expects from an Italian eatery to steaks and seafood. Among our favorites are their signature Cavatelli Bada Bing—cooked table side—handmade Ricotta Cavatelli, vodka Flambed in a pan and then poured inside of a giant Padano Parmesan Wheel with San Daniele Prosciutto, Tomatoes, and Basil. Tryst’s summer menu offers seasonal twists, from mussels to flatbread. The Wednesday’s Ladies Night with half-priced appetizers is a deal. Here are three that wowed us:
with peanuts, coconut milk and ginger and this all sits on some crunchy, citrusy ramen noodles. I would say the spice was light to medium with great flavors! This is something totally different and I highly recommend it.

1st Course: Tuna Poké: This was very fresh with great flavors. It is very light and refreshing for summer. Kevin and I both loved this dish. The Tuna Poké is served with puffed rice chips and spicy mayo. The puffed rice is actually sushi rice that is cooked until tender, slow dried over night and then popped in the fryer the next day. They were great tasting and gave the dish some crunchy texture. 2nd Course: Chicken and Kimchi Sausage: This is served with “bird’s nest” noodles and spicy peanut sauce. Chef
Latin Flair We are partial to spicy dishes, so Red Mesa and Nueva Cantina’s are two of our favorites, especially the Sunday Brunch at Nueva. At Red Mesa, we tried a number of dishes but two caught our tastebuds. The Sweet Potato & Chorizo Tacos with cotija cheese, pickled red onion and cumin crema just melt in your mouth. I usually like my starches more savory, and less sweet, which is why I’m not usually a big fan of sweet potatoes. However, the way this was prepared with roasted potatoes and adding the pickled red onions and cumin crema made it absolutely delicious. The Crispy Tuna three mini tacos featured sashimistyle tuna, coconut lime mojito, pickled red onions, mango and serrano chile. Check out the flavor sensations here: sweet (coconut & mangos), sour (lime & pickled red onions), salty (crispy taco shell), and piquance / heat (serrano & sriracha). It is the only item on the menu with serrano chiles.
Main Course: Seared Gulf Grouper: Served with corn soufflé, roasted summer squash, arugula and tomato vinaigrette, this seafood dish was the winner; I didn’t expect so much flavor and it was seared to perfection and delicious on the inside. Lunch At The Lure We’ve loved The Lure since day one. We’ve gone about 20 times or more since they opened in January 2016, and this is the first time Lori ate something besides sushi, with the exception of Joey Meatballs one time. We love that the food is not only delicious and high quality, but that they are inventive with their food creations, and eclectic in the selections. We started with the Nigiri Lunch - One piece each tuna, salmon, yellowtail and shrimp and your choice one classic sushi roll plus edamame, Miso soup or seaweed salad. We went with the seaweed salad. Everything here was delicious and fresh. I loved it. Lori had one minor complaint about the slice of orange imparting some of it’s citrus taste to the piece of sushi it was touching. I actually liked the tiny bit of orange flavor on the tasty, cool, fresh fish. Even the pickled ginger, which is usually an afterthought, was quite tasty too.

One sushi item of note, that is a super great deal for two people to share is the Combo Plate. It is huge, and definitely enough for two—coming to $8 per person.
The pressing is nicely done, and I liked the char on the bread, and the overall flavor. It is a more mild version, a little smoother, and less sharp than a traditional Cuban. If you’re a Cuban sandwich aficionado, it might not be for you. However, if you like to try different little twists on popular dishes, then give it a whirl.
You get tuna, salmon, and shrimp nigiri (1 piece each); tuna, salmon, and yellowtail sashimi (2 pieces each) and your choice one classic sushi roll plus edamame, miso soup or seaweed salad. Our second sushi item was the Do the Hoke Poké - An Ahi Poké with mango, scallions, kelp and black caviar resting on a bed of mixed greens and accompanied by a tower of brown rice. (They were out of brown rice, so we had white.)

This was perfectly done—clean, crisp, tangy, sweet, and tart at the same time. Next came the sandwiches. The Nod is named as such because it is a nod to the Cuban Sandwich. Chef Kevin told us that there are so many Cuban sandwiches out there, and so many disputes as to who has the best one, that The Lure decided to NOT do a Cuban, but to rather do a twist on one. The main difference from the traditional Cuban is that the pork is pulled / shredded rather than sliced pork, and the dressing is dijonnaise, instead of mustard.

When Parkshore Grille’s Chef Tyson served us a watermelon gazpacho, I swooned over the subtle, sophisticated flavors. When it’s too hot to cook, why not consider whipping up some vichyssoise, gazpacho or cold peach soup? Paired with a good cheese (Prima Donna, Manchego) and a fruit sorbet for dessert, it’s a light meal for lunch or dinner served best with Sancerre. VICHYSSOISE Ingredients 2 cups finely diced raw potatoes 4 tablespoons butter 6 leeks, cleaned and cut into 1 inch pieces 3 cups chicken bouillon 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshy ground black pepper a dash of nutmeg 11/2 to 2 cups sour cream or heavy cream Chopped chives Preparation 1. Cook the potatoes in salted water to cover until just tender. 2. Melt the butter in a skillet and cool the leeks gently, tossing them lightly, for a few minutes. 3. Add the chicken bouillon and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer the leeks until tender. 4. Add the potatoes to the leeks and the broth and season to taste with salt, pepper and nutmeg. 5. Put this mixture in the blender (you will need to blend it in two lots) and blend for 1 minute, or until smooth. Chill. 6. When ready to serve, mix in sour cream or heavy cream. Garnish with chopped chives.

I am about to rock your world. Meet Charles Smith. A California native, he moved to Denmark and spent nine years managing rock bands throughout Europe. Between gigs he grew to love drinking wine. In 1999, he returned to the United States and settled in Washington State. The rest is wine history. Charles Smith taught himself how to make wine. Today he is based in Walla Walla, Washington and he still looks like a rock n’ roller. And his wines? They are designed to drink now and you should not wait. They are marvelous and inexpensive.
Let me introduce you to two wines. The first is Boom Boom Syrah. For less than $17 a bottle you can enjoy a red wine that has hints of blackberry, boysenberry and spice. It is great with pork dishes, but you can enjoy this Syrah with anything. It is a popular wine that you can find in most wine stores. I have not found too many downtown bars serving this wine, but you should ask and encourage then to do so.
The second wine from Mr. Smith is one of my favorites. I love the name. I love the label. And yes, I love the wine. Kung Fu Girl Riesling. You will taste citrus, peach, and some minerals. Try it with seafood or any Asian food. I love sipping this wine, which will only cost you 11 bucks. Yup, you read that correctly-11 dollar bills. It is easy to find. Charles Smith has 3 other wines: The Velvet Devil Merlot, Eve Chardonnay and Chateau Smith Cabernet Sauvignon. They are good, but I believe Kung Fu Girl and Boom Boom are his best. Thank you Charles Smith for giving us wonderful wines you can drink right now at a great price. Long live Rock n’ Roll.
Wine Tips Don’t drink your wine at room temperature. If you don’t have a wine refrigerator then put red wines in the fridge for two hours before serving, and white wines in the fridge for three hours. If you are impatient and need your wine fix right now, then give your red wine bottle an ice bath for 10 minutes. Soak your white wine bottle for 20 minutes. July 13 Puddles Pity Party � The Palladium A 7-foot clown walks into a bar. He motions for a soda water and sits there staring at his drink. The year was 1998 and Puddles had wandered into the Star Community Bar in Atlanta, GA where bartender Big Mike Geier first laid eyes on the sad, silent clown. “There was a heaviness about him,” says Geier. “I could tell he wasn’t in the mood to chat, so I pretty much left him alone except to pass him the mustard when he pulled an onion and a heel of bread out of his pocket. A couple weeks later, he came by the bar and gave me a flyer to a show he was doing at a flea market. The sound system was crap, but his voice was something else. I’ve been in my share of bands and wasn’t expecting much from a clown singing karaoke from a boombox. But I’ll be damned if his singing didn’t get me all choked up. Puddles gives an emotive performance that resonates with all kinds of folks.”
I met these guys at a TV station two years ago and was awed by how young and talented they were and are. Their star continues to rise and on July 8th, they’ll kick-off their tour at DTSP’s Hideaway Café at 7:30 pm. The Ries Brothers (pronounced ”Rees”) duo are homegrown artists. They blend rock, blues, funk, and reggae into a soulful-sophisticated sound. Older brother Charlie sings lead vocals while simultaneously playing drums and keyboard bass, giving the band it’s unique and full sound. Younger brother Kevin Jordan completes the band’s “sonic creativity” on guitar, provides background vocals and co-writes many of their songs. They have twice toured nationally as the opening act for the iconic band CHICAGO. Their first 10-city tour with CHICAGO included a performance at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Last year they did a 15-city tour opening for the late Butch Trucks (Allman Brothers) & The Freight Train Band. Late last year the brothers completed their first headlining tour, highlighted by a performance at “The House that Les Paul Built,” the legendary Iridium in NYC. Reviewed by Kyle Stevens of the Huffington Post: “The insanely talented duo played the Iridium in Manhattan…with special guest Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez, founding member of the E Street Band and member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. When the concert was over they left the crowd begging for more.” The Ries Brothers have also opened for David Cook, Daughtry, Toby Keith, Los Lonely Boys, REO Speedwagon, Little River Band, The Edgar Winter Band & The Family Stone among others. Last year they sold out three headlining shows at Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Murray Theatre in Clearwater, Florida. They have also appeared at the House of Blues & Viper Room in Los Angeles. In the summer of 2013, the boys participated in the exclusive Los Angeles Grammy Museum’s Music Revolution Project at Ruth Eckerd Hall. In the summer of 2014 the boys were part of the Van’s Warped Tour in Florida. First, as they like to call it, the Roosterant. Iberian Rooster took over the historic Kress Building, once a five and dime. It’s a lush space, open and lovely, with exotic cocktails and pastries, especially the Iberian chocolate torte. Now serving Colonial Portuguese fusion food, the tapas boasts flavors of Mozambique, Macau, Brazil, and Goa. At the Museum of Fine Arts, don't miss Florence U. “Fonchen” Lord (1911–1993), a Minimalist painter and sculptor based primarily in Lakeland, Florida. This is the first time that her work will be exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, showcasing both her paintings from the 1960s and the lacquered, large-scale sculptures of her later career. Lord earned her BFA from Radcliffe College and an MA from Washington University in St. Louis. Of her evolution toward sculpture, she said it was a “need to free myself from the shackles of frames [and] two-dimensional flat canvas.”

HISTORY The Florida Holocaust Museum: Celebrating 25 years, the museum’s core exhibition, History, Heritage and Hope spans the first floor. Featuring original artifacts, video, and photos, it presents the history of the Holocaust beginning with the history of antisemitism and life before World War II, followed by the rise of Hitler and the Nazis and anti-Jewish legislation. The history of other victim groups, ghettoes and rescue are shown. The exhibition culminates with sections about concentration camps and killing centers and a boxcar of the type that was used during the Holocaust. The final area presented is Lessons for Today where visitors learn about other genocides and acts of hatred occurring today.
“Surreal Identity” thru 8/27 Florida Statewide Student Surrealist Art Exhibit features budding surrealist artists’ portraits. According to the exhibit’s description, since the time of the Egyptians, portraits have served as documents that record an individual’s likeness at a particular moment in time. While traditional portraiture provided information and clues about the sitter’s characteristics, interests, social status or history, artists in the surrealist movement approached portraits and self-portraits in a non-traditional manner, as exemplified by the works of Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington, and Frida Kahlo (though she rejected the title of “surrealist”).

How we perceive and express ourselves—our identities—is much more complex than what we see in the mirror. The surrealists strived to reveal their hidden, authentic selves by delving into the subconscious. To this group of artists, surrealism—literally meaning above and beyond realism—was the truest way to express ones’ identity, and they used techniques like transformation, symbolism, shock and surprise to depict these non-traditional portraits.

Just go. You’ll be pampered silly. Getting there is half the fun. Head over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and in less than an hour enjoy St. Armand’s Circle shopping at Foxy Lady, followed by lunch at the trendy Shore restaurant next door. The resort is only a mile down the road. Check in to a luxurious beachfront guest room with full kitchen and private balcony and you’ll never want to leave. AND THAT SAND! The $1.8 million dollar renovation project is amazing. The resort is immaculate, spacious and friendly staff detail-oriented. There’s 45 holes of golf, tennis gardens, a 291 slip marina, 8 restaurants and lounges, children’s club and summer camps. The service is outstanding. Best part of my stay: the 8:30 am yoga class on the beach by experienced instructor Tamara Page. She had a gentle nature. I’m a rookie. Spa Director Nancy Thielman oversees the spa programs and restful atmosphere. Therapist Dana’s therapeutic touch during a 60 minute massage was perfection. It’s the attention to details that stand out: an attendant standing by with your towel or glass of water if needed, escorting me to the steam and spacious meditative room. The staff has obvious first class over-the-top training that really sets this resort apart. (Option B: order gourmet pizza in your room and sit on the balcony with a bottle of champagne. Just sayin.) During the annual Sarasota Film Festival the stars stay here. Kevin Bacon told me at dinner “I wouldn’t live in LA if I’d known about beaches at The Longboat Key Club.” WHAT? Strange but true. This year the festival is April 13-22, 2018. MovieMaker magazine named it one of the Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World.

Worried About Your Nest Egg? Be Shrewd, Skeptical, Smart BY CHRIS BARNETT It’s summertime and the living is easy. The markets are roaring and the cocktail party talk turns to what to buy and where to invest? First tip. Never take investment advice from anyone at a cocktail party or any social gathering. That radiantly tanned implant surgeon driving the Bentley Continental G-3 is probably overleveraged and underwater on his broker’s ‘can’t miss’ stock tout and misery loves company. Nobody shares a surefire moneymaking idea. And If they do win and gloat, it’s too late to get in.
Instead, Moneywise paid a visit to Tony Anderson, CEO of ARS Wealth Advisors, a 20-year-old St. Petersburg firm that answers to the Securities and Exchange Commission, not some Wall Street brokerage house sales boss whipping the branches for more and more clients. Anderson, who drives a Toyota Tundra pickup, is a low-key, hard-nosed realist. ARS lives off fees, not commissions, so its not constantly pushing a parade of new investments, concepts and products your way.

Seek out big diversified, multinational companies but not conglomerates. Roche Holdings makes pharmaceuticals but is also into oncology, diagnostics. Zero in on international stocks in developed countries led by Europe. Among them: Nestle, the global food giant, Novartis, another drug company, Diagio, the liquor brand Goliath.

The stock market is white hot and a little overvalued. Expect a correction. They occur every 12 to 14 months and we’re overdue. It’s healthy and normal.

That said, don’t get emotional, overreact and sell. Hang tough and ride it out. Overall, the stock market is trending upwards.

The economy and corporate earnings are both strong and improving. Just do not get rattled or distracted by the endless screaming headlines out of Washington DC these days. The place to be today is in the stock market.

But certainly not 100%. Build and don’t touch your ‘reserve’ account—enough cash to cover nine months of bills and emergencies with no exposure to risk. Keep it in a bank savings, credit union or money market account. You’ll only make ¼% interest but it’s safe and available. Avoid certificates of deposit. The tad higher return is not worth having it tied up when you need it.

Turn a deaf ear to the siren song of easy credit. Be prudent. Avoid the tempting mileage and rebate bonuses of credit card merchants beseeching you to take out more plastic. Paying 29% on the unpaid monthly balance is a gouge. And that balance always creeps up. Guard your FICO score.

Stick with fundamentally solid, blue chip, established, proven performers with an eye toward tech. Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks, MasterCard. Mutual fund families like Vanguard and T. Rowe Price have low-cost, big cap offerings with strong track records.

Consider index mutual funds or ETFs— exchange traded funds where you’re buying a huge basket of stocks with minimal price swings. Such as iShares Edge MSCI Min Vol USA ETF which tracks low volatility US stocks, SPDR S&P 500 ETF which tracks the legendary Standard & Poors index or Powershares QQQ ETF that tracks the technology-heavy NASDAQ.

While bonds aren’t attractive at the moment from a yield or appreciation viewpoint, the income stream is reassuring. US Treasury Notes with 2 to 5 year maturities pay 2.5% to 3%. iShares Core US Bond Index fund, Angel Oak Multi-Strategies and Doubeline Total Return are worth a look see.

Avoid municipal bonds as a general rule. Florida has no state income tax to dodge. Never buy stocks on margin, don’t play the “short seller” game, commodities, naked options, puts and calls—unless you’re a seasoned, super savvy investor with a cast-iron gut. Just say no to any complicated so-called “structured” investment products Wall Street loves to sell; the broker and the house make money; the investor takes all the risk.

And when the silky smooth, silver tongued, media-hyped guru talks of ‘possibly letting you in’ on a 23% annually compounded investment ‘strategy,’ think Bernie Madoff. Greed is the ultimate sucker’s game. His victims played and lost it all.

If you build an inventory of compelling case histories and stories that demonstrate how your product took your client from mess to success, you can grow your sales and customer interest. Here are some perfect opportunities to persuade with a story: During an Initial Call to Get a Meeting. Never lead with the story. First have a conversation with the prospect. Ask about their goals, what they are doing right, and what they see as the roadblocks they hope you can help them get past. At this point ask: “May I tell you a true story about how we helped a client get from where you are now to where you want to go?” To Close a Client During a Meeting. For many companies, business development is not a one-step close. During an initial get together you gather information and in the subsequent meeting you propose a course of action. This is the time to add a case history story of a client that was in a similar situation. On a Website and in Collateral Material. Get rid of those dry case studies on the website. Instead, convert them to the more persuasive story format of the six-step formula. This also applies to your marketing collateral. During a New Business Presentation. Oftentimes, you may be asked to make a presentation to a group. Because humans are hardwired for stories, this is a perfect opportunity to make your pitch memorable. During a Speech or Media Interview. Use stories when you receive an invitation to make a speech or give an interview to the media. To Train Employees. Reinforce core values with employees and new hires through sharing the inventory of stories. Bottom line: The right stories can work wonders whether you are using them in a one-to-one meeting, in a presentation that is one-to-several, or in a speech or publicity that is one-to-many. Creating Good Business Stories These stories must be true case studies, but told in a certain way. Here is a quick overview of the formula: Start with a main character. Every story starts with the name of a character who wants something. This is not you, but your client. Make your main characters likable so the listeners will root for them by describing some of their good qualities. Generally, three attributes work best: “Marie was smart, tough, and fair.” For privacy reasons you do not need to use their real names. Have a nemesis character. Stories need conflict to be interesting. What person, institution, or condition stands in the character’s way? The villain in the story might be a challenge in the business environment, such as the recession of 2008 or higher tax rates (the government is always a classic nemesis character). Bring in a mentor character. Heroes need help on their journey. This is where you come in. Be the voice of wisdom and experience. The hero does not succeed alone, they succeed because of the help you provided. Know what story you are telling. Human brains are programmed to relate to one of eight great meta-stories. These are: monster, underdog, comedy, tragedy, mystery, quest, rebirth, and escape. If the story is about overcoming a huge problem, that is a monster problem story. If the company was like a David that overcame an industry Goliath, that is an underdog story. Have the hero succeed. Have the hero go from mess to success (it was a struggle, and they couldn’t have done it without you). Give the listeners the moral of the story. Take a cue from Aesop, the man who gave us fables like The Tortoise and the Hare (the moral: slow and steady wins the race). Don’t count on the listeners to get the message. The storyteller’s final job is to tell them what the story means.

Coastal Living recently named St. Pete/Clearwater to its list of 20 Best Places to Live in 2017, calling the area an “upstart city on Florida’s Gulf Coast.” The magazine based its rating off of beaches, cultural attractions like the Dalí Museum, dining and entertainment options, and places to stay, saluting the area’s “historic, small-scale neighborhoods” for balancing “big-city pleasures.” Coastal Living also took into account the population, average high and low temperatures, median home price, area commutability, and average days of sunshine.
For those of us who live here, exploring new restaurants, shops and attractions the 4th Street corridor (Sunken Gardens) and old Southeast neighborhoods (Nueva Cantina, Storybook Café) is a pleasant weekend scavenger hunt. There’s no shortage of clever events, from Grand Central’s Saturday ArtWalk to the monthly Brocante Market, the October thru May Saturday MorningMarket, the monthly Friday Port Food and Craft Beer fest and all the cool events that pop up on a whim. Green Bench and 3 Daughters host everything from movies to yoga, Iberian Rooster boasts comedy, open mic nights and jazz and Wine Madonna has a wine and book night. Facebook brims with mind-boggling options. From classic car shows to blues concerts and Mainsail Arts at The Vinoy, the DTSP waterfront is transformed monthly into a community hootenanny. One of my favorite events of the year is the historic Kenwood cottage tours, the Shine Mural festival and the Grand Central folk music and crafts fests, where Etsy artists showcase their wares.
With the Pier groundbreaking in June, the DTSP waterfront gets a facelift. But there’s more to downtown than just The Pier. The Downtown Waterfront Master Plan envisions a continued legacy of preserved and enhanced open space that is inclusive and offers opportunities for all. County News Safe Boating: To help prepare boaters and encourage safe, responsible vessel operation, the Pinellas County Sheriff ’s Office sponsors programs like “Operation Kid-Float,” a boating safety education and personal flotation device (PFD) loaner program. Fertilizer Ban: Now through Sept. 30 Pinellas County residents may not apply fertilizers containing nitrogen or phosphorus to lawns and landscape plants. Fertilizer runoff can pollute rivers, lakes, bays and the Gulf of Mexico, cause algae blooms and lead to fish kills. www.pinellascounty.org/environment/watershed/fertilizer

Carillon Expansion: The City of St. Pete along with the state and private companies will work to reducing gridlock through street improvements (turning lanes, widened streets). Pier Update: Here we go! As of June, site work and test piles for the pier’s foundation were scheduled to begin and construction on the pier deck will begin in October. Lambert Advisory (Lambert), an economic advisory service firm contracted by the City of St. Petersburg, completed an economic and fiscal impact analysis for the new Pier District. Some highlights of the report: • Total economic impact directly from the Pier District estimated at $80 million - a complete return on investment in the first year of operation • An estimated 325 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) jobs, nearly $16 million in total construction wages and over $1.6 million in professional fees during construction • Total expenditures for Pier and St. Petersburg estimated at $40 million annually • $15 million in annual hotel expenditures • 102,000 increase in annual new room nights • 1080 additional full-time equivalent Pinellas county jobs Downtown Trolley Loop: Under the preliminary proposal to enhance service, PSTA would add at least one new all-electric trolley. The service available to users would double and the entire loop would take no more than 15 minutes from start to finish - reducing travel times for people using the service. It would also be free. New On-Ramp for I-175: For folks who work at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, the University of South Florida St. Petersburg and the Dali Museum, a new ramp will ease traffic flow and should be done this summer. The new ramp will allow cars to enter the interstate traveling northbound on Fourth Street South. Campbell Park Regional Skate Park On Its Way: Citizens weighed in on the final design in June during an open house with city staff and members of the project design team. Work on the project is expected to be completed next spring. The $1.25 million project will construct an approximately 28,000 square foot skate park, designed to attract skateboarders of all skill levels as well as serve as a host site for exhibitions and competitions. Once completed, the facility will be one of the largest skate parks in Florida.

Hurricane Alerts: Pinellas County officials unveiled new emergency preparedness tools last week. Citizen can download the Ready Pinellas app for easy hurricane preparedness; check your evacuation zone and download the 2017 All Hazards Preparedness Guide. You can also sign up for the Alert Pinellas notification service. www.pinellascounty.org/emergency Beach Renourishment: The Pinellas County federal beach nourishment project will receive an additional $16 million in federal funding this summer. Last summer, the County was awarded $12.8 million to respond to storm damage to Pinellas beaches. With the additional monies and $5.15 million from the County’s Bed Tax and $5.15 million from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the Corps will be able to renourish up to 10.5 miles of beaches to provide critical coastal storm damage protection, recreational opportunities and enhanced natural habitats. The federal government has invested nearly $120 million in restorative beach erosion control measures, including beach nourishment and the construction of groins, to date. PIE Kudos: St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport was awarded the 2016 Air Carrier Safety Award by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Southern Division.
Medical & Health News Expanded Senior Care: Dedicated Senior Medical Center started serving Tampa Bay area seniors in October of 2016 and now the ChenMed subsidiary is opening three new centers in Tampa, Clearwater and St. Petersburg at 901 22nd Avenue South and will be the largest new center, with substantial community activity areas and 35 physician/patient examination rooms. Healthcare Kudos: St. Petersburg General Hospital earned the Tampa Bay Times Top 100 Workplaces distinction for a fifth year, being recognized in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017. The Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) has named St. Petersburg General Hospital a nationwide leader in providing equal and inclusive treatment to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning patients. La Florida: The Interactive Digital Archive of the Americas – created by J. Michael Francis, Ph.D., the Hough Family Endowed Chair of Florida Studies at USFSP – provides an interactive, multidisciplinary and comprehensive vision of Florida that brings a previously hazy picture of Spanish exploration of the state into sharp focus. Like a cold-case detective, Francis has spent years painstakingly combing through thousands of documents, notes and images, chronicling distant lives and events that gradually formed Florida’s unique and vibrant tapestry. The elements he and his team have unearthed represent an enormous contribution to the existing body of historical knowledge, spanning the state’s highly formative period from the early 1500s to the start of the 1800s. The La Florida website will be unveiled in the fall.

Gulf of Mexico U.S. - Cuba Collaboration: In June, marine scientists took another step forward in academic relations between U.S. and Cuba during an 18-day research expedition to waters off the northwest section of the island nation in May. Eckerd College Marine Science Professor Gregg Brooks and Marine Research Assistant Rebekka Larson were among the scientific cohort that journeyed to Cuba on the Florida Institute of Oceanography’s research vessel R/V Weatherbird II from May 8 to 25. Researchers collected 450 fish, 150 water samples, nearly 1,500 sediment samples, and 50 fish-egg and zooplankton samples to create a catalog of environmental baseline specimens. Using these samples, scientists will determine the presence of chemical signatures of petroleum in future oil spill events. Bayfront Update Help for Heartburn: For the first time, patients in St. Petersburg now have access to relief from their reflux disease through a minimally-invasive laparoscopic procedure. The procedure is designed to treat patients with severe heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease and augments the lower esophageal sphincter, preventing the stomach acid from escaping. The procedure is done laparoscopically using a camera and tools that are placed through five small incisions, which minimize the recovery time and risks to the patient. The procedure lasts between 30-45 minutes and patients can resume a normal diet that night. New Bayfront CEO: As of July 17, Bayfront Health St. Petersburg has a new chief executive officer, John McClain replacing Kathryn Gillette who is retiring. Also in July, Bayfront hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking for a $22 million renovation and expansion of the emergency and trauma center at Bayfront.

the city’s first post office, the story of the iconic green benches and relive the magic of Webb’s City - the World’s Most Unusual Drug Store! This temporary space wonderfully shares the City’s rich history while a new 3,000 square foot main gallery is being designed to bring St. Petersburg’s history to life though an interactive wonderland. Florida has been called the Freak State, the Sunshine State, the State that Advertising Built and the Land of Endless Opportunity, but never has it been called boring as the Alligator and Oddities Exhibit demonstrates. Explore the Main Gallery and discover the wonders of Florida’s favorite reptile and star of any Roadside Attraction - the alligator. On loan from the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee, the alligators portion of Alligators & Oddities is a fun look at the reptile that has amazed tourists and residents alike for centuries. Florida wouldn’t be complete without its own collection of weirdness. From the Museum’s famous Two-Headed Calf to Civil War-era skulls to the circus side-show Alligator Girl on loan from St. Augustine’s Museum of Mystery, oddities have long been a part of the story of Florida!

St. Petersburg Preservation Society’s walking tours through downtown and Gulfport showcase the new and old with an entertaining dose of history. During the summer, they conduct Twilight on the Town walking tours and from Oct. through April, they host Saturday walking tours. St. Petersburg Preservation Society

The museum itself is an exhibit of history. For nearly a century, the St. Petersburg Museum of History has shared stories of the Sunshine City, presenting exhibits depicting the birth of the City with the arrival of the Orange Belt Railroad to the arrival of Major League Baseball and the Tampa Bay Rays. They also host world-class traveling exhibits loaned from national museums.
