AN ELEVATED APROACH TO CITY LIVING
Not that long ago, grazing was something that cattle and sheep and herds of other four-legged animals did. Today, it’s most definitely a people thing. Casual entertaining centered around a single bounty of imported delicacies, sliced charcuterie paired with gourmet jams, nuts, olives, and cheeses, crusty breads, fruits and veggies, paired with several varietals of wine or craft cocktails seems to be the trend.
At 29, Hartpence seems to have found her niche. She worked her way around the St. Pete food and beverage/hospitality scene for more than a decade, doing everything from tending bar to becoming the event coordinator and catering director for a major restaurant group. “When the pandemic hit, I was laid off in April of 2020,” she said. “That gave me the time to really focus my energy on what my next steps were and where I wanted to take my Withincareer.”afew weeks, Gather ‘Round & Graze was born, which put her creative talent for food styling and event planning front ‘Round & Graze
Gather
And it’s gone off the charts as illustrated by St. Pete culinary entrepreneur Kaley Hartpence, whose lavish curated Gather ‘Round & Graze tables often elicit gasps of awe from those lucky enough to partake. Her lovingly prepared grazing platters extend well beyond the typical charcuterie board of yore. Each one is custom designed and styled according to the client’s desires, to be as much a feast for the eyes as for the stomach. From grazing tables that serve large groups, to boards for holiday cocktail parties and neatly packaged boxes for a romantic sunset at the beach, Hartpence works with each client to create their dream nosh. Grazes might include smoked prosciutto, honey infused goat cheese, white chocolate stuffed raspberries, goat cheese stuffed pepper, honey, dried apricots, hickory smoked almonds, gourmet chocolates, fresh blackberries, grapes and blueberries, just for starters.

In addition, she has partnered with wine company Malbec Bay to offer regular Cheese and Wine Pairing Experiences. For Hartpence, it’s a creative labor of love. She personally selects all the components from various markets known for fresh flowers and produce, specialty gourmet and imported food products. “I have five local markets I shop, but Mazzaro’s is a staple,” she says of St. Pete’s massively popular Italian market which carries hundreds of imported products. She rents space at a commercial kitchen where she prepares each order, then delivers it. For large events with grazing tables, she’ll arrive a couple hours in advance to do set-up, returning later to whisk away the “Iremains.feelso fortunate to be doing what I really love,” Hartpence says. American Stage kicks off the new season with rock musical “Green Day’s American Idiot.” Based on the 2005 Grammy winning album of the same name by punk rock band Green Day, the raucous rock opera gives us the music of a generation while navigating themes that can be as intense as the score. The plot revolves around three friends struggling to find meaning in a post-9/11 world. Music by Green Day, lyrics by Billie Joe Armstrong.
Uruguayan-Spanish artist Yamandú Canosa creates an intense dialog between Surrealism and contemporary art in The Visit on view through October 30 at The Dalí Museum. The sprawling exhibit features both abstract and figurative works, many with Dalinian influences, set in a dramatic installation especially conceived for the museum.
Canosa moved to Spain in 1975 and his work has been featured in museums throughout the world. This is his first exhibit in the United States.
18 StPeteLifeMag.com September/October 2022 ARTS BRIEFS
Canosa is recognized as part of the Avantgarde artistic legacy that precedes Dalí, said museum director Hank Hine in a press release.
“The Visit invites us to ask what lies ahead and provides a powerful interpretation of the contemporary relevance of Surrealism.” Most works were commissioned for the exhibit with the walls integrated into the overall theme by representing nature and places in Spain that were part of Dali’s life.

Immense balloon sculptures float like complex spaceships in one gallery, while large-scale contemporary paintings depicting rage, anger, love and other emotions barter for attention nearby in an emotionally complex exhibit of works by St. Pete multi-disciplinary artist Jason Hackenwerth. It runs through October 16 at the Gallery at Creative Pinellas in Largo.
Titled DARKMATTER, the exhibit is a retrospective of Hackenwerth’s body of work, including fascinating spatial sketches for major balloon installations around the world over the past 20 years. Gallery hours are limited: Wednesday-Sunday from noon to 5 pm.
Creative Pinellas is at 12211 Walsingham Rd. adjacent to Florida Botanical Gardens and Heritage Village.

The Royal Caribbean Brilliance of the Seas will depart the Port of Tampa with stops at Key West and the Bahamas. Guests will enjoy music performances, themed mixers, group dinners, educational seminar and social activities revolving around opera. St. Petersburg is rich in culture and the arts, and lucky, indeed, to have three outstanding museums downtown. While many people visit these institutions for their works of art, they might be missing out on some rare finds at the museum cafés. We visited the top three to discover what each has to offer. What we found were hidden gems, each with its own personality and charm –and cuisine that stands out from the ordinary. All are well worth a trip to the museum, even if you don’t come for the art. — Marcia Biggs
Dalí Museum - Café Gala Since the reincarnation of The Dalí Museum on the downtown waterfront some 11 years ago, Café Gala has been enticing museum-goers from around the world, as well as locals, with a carefully curated menu of light Spanish tapas, salads, soups and desserts. At the helm since opening is Chef Chuck Bandel, a St. Pete native who was hand-picked to run the show by café owner and St. Pete restauranteur Steve Westphal (they are now café co-partners, says Bandel). The light, airy café is named for Salvador Dalí’s wife and muse Gala, focusing on authentic foods of the various regions of Spain, the artist’s homeland. Located in the museum lobby beneath the geodesic glass dome Enigma wall overlooking the AvantGarden, Café Gala diners are in the midst of the action from the adjacent museum store and the famous helical staircase that rises three stories to the galleries above. A seat at the counter is the perfect location to chill out and watch baristas whip up a latte or cappuccino. Or you can line up to place your order at the counter, then grab a seat at a table to wait for a server to arrive. The menu is constantly changing, says Bandel, according to what suits his whims, what’s seasonal, and often reflecting the major exhibit or artist at the time. He travels to Spain every summer, working

When the pandemic arrived in spring of 2020, most restaurants closed up shop, and the café at the Museum of Fine Arts was no exception. A joyous museum staff finally announced the sorely missed independently-run café would open in late April this year with a new name, a new menu and new owners.
The menu is a study of regional Spanish cuisine often with a modern twist — Pan Con Tomat Burrata & Jamon offers grilled bread with fresh tomato rub, burrata cheese, and serrano jamon drizzled with EVOO. The classic Tortilla Españolo is a small plate Spanish omelet with onion and potato, topped with lemon aioli. The Pressed Serranita presses roast pork and serrano jamon with Manchego cheese, tomato and pimento aioli. Avocado Toast is one of the top sellers, says Bandel, a far cry from mashed avocado by adding goat cheese mousse, with pickled tomatoes and spiced walnuts, topped with microgreens.
A selection of desserts includes a popular Tarta de Santiago almond cake, Basque cheesecake, scones, biscotti, muffins, and croissants. Kahwa is the house coffee, and the baristas are quite adept at making everything from cappuccino and café con leche to a Dalí Stinger double espresso with honey, vanilla, cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Shareable boards include A Taste of Spain featuring a trio of Spanish meats and cheeses, artichokes, nuts, peppers, olive, dried figs and apricots and grilled bread slices, and the Farmhouse Cheese Plate with a trio of Spanish cheeses. Most produce is sourced locally when possible, says Bandel, such as greens from Brick Street Farms.
Museum of Fine Arts - Café Clementine
Everything is made from scratch, with ingredients sourced locally when possible. Eggs and butter are organic, which she says is key to the delicate puff pastries and other dishes such as the popular Turkish Eggs featuring two poached eggs on herbed Greek yogurt.
OUT in the kitchens of top restaurants with renowned chefs, where he studies the nuances of every dish. This inspiration he brings back to the Dalí, where he works creative culinary magic.
Don’t miss: Bandel claims his recipe for chilled Gazpacho has been perfected over a decade to its current dreamy creamy state. It’s marvelous. The Catalan Mushroom Bisque, with mushrooms provided locally by ZephyrGills Farm, is a simple yet divine black truffle crema topped with spiced croutons and Caféchives.Gala is open during regular museum hours, 10 am to 6 pm, and Thursdays until 8 pm.
The young couple, who met in high school in Orlando, gained notoriety in recent years as a pop-up vendor at St. Pete’s Saturday Morning Market. “People would be waiting in line the minute we opened,” said Paulina. Now, they arrive before dawn to bake each day’s offerings, a limited selection of Theastoundingpastriesmelt-in-your-mouththatlookasastheytaste.menuissomewhat
The famed salted honey croissants are a starring attraction — if you get there early enough. “We always sell out,” claims Paulina, “so now we offer pre-orders by phone.”
Look for a wine list heavily influenced by Spain, and a selection of local craft beer and, of course, red or white sangria by the glass or pitcher.
Café Gala is a great place to drop in for coffee and pastry or a wine after work (although you’ll have to fork over $10 to park).

Café Clementine has quickly become the French pastry shop, and expert bakers Paulina and Vince Gervasi have become the darlings of downtown for their jaw-droppingly beautiful and delicious pastries. Thursday through Sunday, a regular clientele of downtown residents makes a beeline for the small pastry counter tucked in the back of the museum’s main lobby. Similar to a French patisserie, the shelves present artistic creations from elegant cream puffs and fruit tarts to organic salads, fresh paninis and breakfast bowls.
DINING OUT limited with a half dozen brunch dishes including a soup and a daily special in addition to the pastries. The Croque Monsieur is a marvel, layered with smoked ham, gruyere, bechamel, slathered with whole grain mustard on a fresh croissant. A Spring Caesar is made with Brick Street Farms greens; a Peach and Heirloom Tomato Salad surround a mound of soft burrata cheese.
After being dark for two years, the Canyon Café recently reopened under the management team of locally owned and operated Saltblock Hospitality Group. With an entrance and floor-to ceiling-windows facing Central Avenue, Canyon Café is perfectly situated in the heart of downtown for a quick and healthy nosh with a decidedly Southwestern flair.

Grab a seat at a café table or sit at the magnificent bar, the choice is yours. A compact menu offers a full expresso bar and pastries for morning visitors, but the lunch menu of small plates and lighter fare is where the menu excels.
Chili Alert: As a chili aficionado, our high expectations were handily met with a bowl of house-made chili. This thick rendition combines a blend of roughly pureed pinto and black beans and ground bison, and is perfectly seasoned with smoked chipotles, a topping of sour cream and a few warm tortilla chips. Not spicy, but smoky and flavorful. Ask the server, since it’s not always on the menu.
A selection of coffees, organic teas and bottled juices and kombucha are ready to grab and go. At this time, no alcohol is served, but hopefully it will be in the future. With the light menu and pleasant view of the Tampa Bay yacht basin, a glass of wine would be a fine accompaniment.
22 StPeteLifeMag.com September/October 2022
Everything is made on premises and from scratch, says manager Mike Ragib, and it shows. Dishes come out with the freshest ingredients, perfectly seasoned and attractively presented.
The Canyon Café is open during regular museum hours, daily from 10 am to 5 pm, and until 8 pm on Tuesdays.
origin goes back to 1905 in Chicago, eventually moving to San Francisco in 1923. James Museum founders Tom and Mary James purchased it from an antiques dealer in Cincinnati prior the museum’s opening in 2018.
The Street Tacos plate is a winner with three fresh corn tortillas filled with your choice of smoked pork, shredded chicken or chipotle roasted squash and black bean puree. (Vegetarians will be happy here.) It comes with a fresh side salad. If you’re hankering for a burger, you can’t go wrong with the flavorful and healthful Bison Burger, accompanied by choice of wedge fries or house salad.
Want to share a nibble at the bar? Order a nacho plate with warm tortilla chips. A decent selection of beer and wine is available, too. The menu will be changing occasionally to take advantage of seasonal produce and special dishes will be created to complement the theme of special exhibits, Ragib added.
Must try: The salted honey croissants are said to be in top demand, but we almost fell off our chairs when we encountered the Sweet Corn Custard Filled Brioche. Be forewarned, these pastries are big enough for two, do not try to eat one alone.
James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art – Canyon Café
In true Southwest fashion, Chef Taj Neuhoff has an open grill fired up in the kitchen where she chars fresh corn and sears squash for the Three Sisters Bowl which comes with a scoop of authentic wild rice, red onion, cherry tomatoes and a cilantrolime vinaigrette. The Southwest Caesar comes with or without charred chicken, smoked pork or farmed salmon.

A place to go to refresh and restore. And yet, the bathroom is not the first room that comes to mind when interior design is being considered. At Decker Ross, we look at your entire home and how you live in it. From brewing in a bubblebath to dining on the deck. Rewarding big challenges with creative solutions is what we do. Give us a call. Like that slow soak in a warm bath, we’ll take the stress out of designing your home’s interior to match the way you live your life.

Dineen services nine apiaries (hive complexes), including her own St. Petersburg backyard where she tends six hives on a quarter-acre of land. Dineen and her husband, Art Howe, run A Bee’s Place, a full-service bee business. They crank out lots of honey – selling jars of it at shops and markets from John’s Pass Village to Safety Harbor. Howe helps in the apiaries, bottles and delivers honey, makes and fixes hive equipment, while Becky hits the road most days inspecting hives as a bee inspector for the Florida Department of Agriculture. She also works as a personal bee-tender caring for backyard hives when the homeowner prefers not to.
Becky Dineen turned the hobby of beekeeping into a full time profession.
It was unwanted bees that made a hive in his house wall that started Johnny Walker on his road to a “bee addiction,” he says. The Seminole resident and president of the Pinellas Beekeepers Association is a handy sort of guy, so was determined to remove the hive himself. When a neighbor came racing over to help, the learning began. That kind Samaritan was himself a beekeeper, inviting Walker to learn more at Tampa Bay Beekeepers Association meetings. Within a few years, Walker founded the Pinellas club, and was elbow deep in making his own honey for personal Bothconsumption.Dineenand Walker have been stung, excuse the pun, by the bee. They are part of a large Tampa Bay community that is concerned about the pollinator population and want to take a role in saving it. Suffice to say most of them also love raw honey, so the side benefit of having a supply of your very own is also enticement.
Becky Dineen has made bees the center of her universe. After eight years in the banking and finance industry, she swapped high heels for boots and immersed herself in the life of bees. A visit to a roadside honey stand was all it took to get her curiosity about bees buzzing. The beekeeper told her all about raising bees, then invited her to come back to watch how it was done, maybe even help. She started attending meetings of the Pinellas Beekeepers Association and set up her own backyard

The Hive Hobby Backyard hives around Pinellas County and St. Petersburg are booming. Dineen reports that there are currently some 300 registered beekeepers in Pinellas County with 2,420 reported hives, and the number continues to grow. The clear winner is St. Petersburg, with 116 registered beekeepers tending 1,101 hives. After that, Clearwater has 50 beekeepers, Seminole has 25, Palm Harbor has 24 and Largo has 23. You don’t need a yard full of blooming flowers and trees to own a hive, by the way.
“Bees travel anywhere from one to five miles from the hive for a nectar source,” explains Dineen. “St. Pete’s a great place to have bees because there are lots of flowers, gardens and trees, even downtown.”
Bruce Rice, left, and Dwight Thomas opted to hire a professional beekeeper to tend the hive in their backyard. Learning the lessons of beekeeping at the KnowBe4 sponsored apiary at the St. Pete College Seminole Campus.

Walker says anyone thinking about beekeeping needs to know it’s a commitment and can be physically taxing, especially in Florida. “Not everyone is a good candidate,” he says. “We recommend before you get a hive to come to our meetings and learn what goes into it. Every couple months you have to go in and maintain it. A full honey super (box within the hive) can weigh up to 50 pounds, and in hot weather this can be challenging.”

Now in his third year, Truby is all in with beekeeping as a serious hobby. Despite holding a day job, he has obtained an LLC in order to sell honey and relocate hives. In the Greater Grovemont neighborhood of north St. Petersburg, Dwight Thomas and Bruce Rice are keeping a hive in their spacious backyard, awaiting a first honey harvest this fall. Thomas grew up with bees his father tended in Indiana, but opted to hire Becky Dineen as their bee-tender. The single hive holds roughly 60,000 bees, says Dineen, and they are angry today. Could be the nearly 100 degree temperatures, or could be they are in a dearth which means an inadequate supply of nectar. She dons her netted headgear and grabs a smoker to calm them down, but a half dozen just won’t give in. Thomas and Rice stand watching the action from across the yard. “This is why we would rather have a professional do it,” Thomas remarks.
Todd Truby got into beekeeping just a few years ago because his teenage daughter wanted a hive. “So I thought, why not?” he said. “We went to a class and did some research and got some bees all within three weeks. Then COVID hit so it was a great distraction when you couldn’t do anything Theyelse.”started with three hives and soon doubled that to six hives. By the end of the second year they were up to over a dozen; then they split those to about 25 hives.

Local businesses and individuals can also Adopt a Beehive, with funding going to support beekeeping education and building of hives (and you receive a pound of honey!). When considering owning a hive, residents should be aware that Florida has laws and regulations related to beekeeping. You must register your bees, and have them inspected on an annual basis. Yards and other locations need to meet certain requirements for space and proximity to neighboring homes.Notacandidate for keeping a hive? Nearly half of patients who undergo chemotherapy will develop CIPN. Chemotherapy meds travel throughout the body and attack cancer cells; sadly they can also cause severe damage to healthy nerves. CIPN can begin within weeks of starting treatment and can worsen as treatment continues.

A successful marketing executive, Potts was working at Clearwater Marine Aquarium until 2020 when he co-founded his own marketing agency, Remedy 365. Coincidentally, he was about to endure another round of cancer treatment.
Potts spent the last two years writing this practical guide that aims to help navigate every step of the cancer experience, whether you’re the one diagnosed or supporting a loved one with cancer. It was often a struggle, he admits, going through 14 treatments of chemo and immunotherapy, and multiple surgeries. “The timing was perfect to write the book,” he said.
Cancer impacts everyone in a unique way, there is no right or wrong way of dealing with it, Potts says, which is why he highly recommends a support group or therapist. These days, he only occasionally leaves the house due to his compromised immune system. “I have to be very careful where I go,” he says.
The Cancer Club. Most of us are members, whether we have had cancer or not. You’re in the Club if you’ve ever been diagnosed with any type of cancer. Do you have a loved one or close friend affected by the disease? Then you’re in the Cancer Club, too. Dealing with a diagnosis of cancer can be traumatic once, but for St. Pete resident Bill Potts it’s been a recurring nightmare. Five diagnoses over the past 20 years, with subsequent treatments and recoveries, have shaped his life. He is currently battling diagnosis No. 6 for lymphoma, a blood cancer, after only 11 months in remission, and prostate
“I have to be outdoors, so I go for shorts runs or to Boyd Hill (Nature Park) or someplace with outdoor seating.”
Thecancer.last two decades have given Potts a unique insight into the cancer fight, its physical and emotional aspects, what to expect during treatment and recovery, and how to go about being your own best advocate. His recently released book “Up for the Fight – How to Advocate for Yourself as You Battle Cancer From a Five-Time Survivor” ($16.95, Page Two Books, Inc.) is his gift to those who are entering the journey that he has come to know so well.

Potts, 62, has three grown children and lives in Old Northeast with wife Kim, who has been at his side as a rock of support. He was an avid runner and Ironman triathlete, taken by surprise in 2002 at age 41 when he found a lump behind his right ear. His life changed forever. He was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, that was followed in 2003 (incorrectly, a return of thyroid cancer), 2008 (lymphoma), 2014 (lymphoma), 2019 (lymphoma) and 2020 (lymphoma and prostate).

Top Advice From Bill C. Potts
Chemo brain (fuzzy memory) is real, so a second set of ears is a good thing. Get your legal documents in order. Just in case, select a medical surrogate and put your wishes in writing. Keep a list of your bank accounts, with online passwords to these, your phone and social media accounts.
Select a special buddy. This person is often a spouse or partner, but if you are single, ask a good friend you can rely on to come with you to doctor and chemo sessions and be a watchdog during your recovery.
Advocate for yourself. Take charge of your cancer journey. Select your care team carefully and get a second opinion. The best care team will listen to you and respect your thoughts and decisions. Do your own research on your type of cancer and various treatment options, including trials. High-volume, larger cancer centers have benefits. The larger centers, such as Moffit Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic, etc. often have greater expertise, a wide range of support services, better service due to larger staff, more treatment options, the most high-tech equipment and can deal with rare cancers.
The advice he provides for both patients and caregivers is straightforward and would be of immense help to anyone newly diagnosed. A very helpful chapter is Advice for Family and Friends, with insightful sections written by his wife, Kim, daughter Anna and son Nick. “I compare this book to ‘What to Expect When You’re Expecting,’ only for cancer,” Potts says. “This is the book I wish had been written 20 years ago by somebody else because it really would have helped me navigate my journey.” Up for the Fight is endorsed by doctors at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic, Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. A home remodel can (and should) be a beautiful thing, an opportunity to imprint personal style into a home, and choosing the right contractor is a key piece to the puzzle. The pitfall that many face in the beginning of the remodeling process is not contemplating a few important questions that ought to be considered before courtship between a client and a contractor should begin: What do I want to do?
A home is a sanctuary for most of us, a place reserved for family and close friends. However, if you’ve ever found yourself in the position of undergoing a remodel, you know that these sacred spaces quickly become the workplaces of countless new faces.
How quickly do I need this done? Addressing timeline goals in the very beginning of your courtship will help you and your contractor in managing expectations. It gives your contractor the opportunity to collaborate with you on ways to achieve these goals, and also to give you feedback on their ability to meet these goals. Once you’ve got these figured out, you should be prepared to reach out to firms to begin your search.
At the beginning of any homeowners remodeling odyssey is the
This is important to address for a few reasons. First, it will help you in your search for a contractor. There are many price points of contractors and knowing your budget for your project will help you identify which price point you are operating in. Secondly, it will inform you, and eventually your contractor, what the financial limitations of the project will be.

Write it down, discuss it with your partner, and have a concept in mind. A handy way to do this is with a list, from most important to least important, what are your goals for your home? Maybe the guest bath needs to happen by Christmas, but the outdoor space can wait until next summer.

Be sure to confirm that the contractors you are considering are licensed in their trade. Each licensed contractor is issued a license number that you can search and confirm on the website for the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Additionally, there are professional organizations that contractors can elect to be members of which offer additional credentials and certifications and set higher standards. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI Tampa Bay) is a great example of this. Find the right fit. At this point you should have narrowed the list down to local, trustworthy, licensed contractors. Now it simply comes down to finding a good fit for you.
Friends, family, and neighbors are also great assets for referrals, so ask around. For example, the project featured in these photos was referred to the contractor through the homeowner’s real estate agent. Home remodeling is an intimate process, and knowing which firms your loved ones trust is a good place to start.
inevitable search. The daunting and harrowing search for a contractor. Fortunately, there are a few things you can look out for when deciding which contractor you’ll be getting into bed with. Review the portfolios of each contractor to be sure they have experience delivering on the type of project and quality of work you are expecting. Good work takes careful planning and time to execute. The more time you take working through all the details with your contractor up front, the quicker the actual construction will happen without delays. We all want to see work starting to happen as soon as possible, but living through a stop-and-go remodel on your home is frustrating. Starting and stopping a construction project has compounding effects on a timeline; if you have to stop to redesign or change a material, everyone down the line has to reschedule their work. Let your contractor cut or dig holes to inspect an existing condition up front, this will save having to stop the project to re-engineer or redesign, usually resulting in countless weeks of Finally, inactivity.don’t be afraid to make drastic changes to your home. It wasn’t easy, but with a patient and involved homeowner, a dedicated contractor, and many talented designers, it has a new soul for years to come.
Once you have chosen and committed to your firm, the project management process should begin. If you have already completed your plans with an architect, you will likely begin the permitting process immediately. If you are starting from the very beginning, then this is the point where your collaboration with your designer will begin. Be prepared. Originally built in 1970, this 4 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom, 2,920 sq/ft, Spanish colonial home on a rare estate-sized 28,560 sq/ft lot was extensively renovated by the third owners of the home. They loved that it was a fantastic example of true Spanish colonial architecture; however, it needed extensive reconstruction. The Seller, who is also a designer, drew from her vast knowledge of Spanish architecture derived from her experience living in Spain. The design objective was to select beautiful, high end finishes and building materials that honor the nobility of the architecture, keeping the old world warmth while pairing those with a more current and livable style.
The Library features custom built-in floor to ceiling shelving made from Pennsylvania black walnut wood. The decorative columns are solid wood and hand turned by master craftsmen. A hidden movie screen is enclosed above the sliding pocket doors.
The renovation included opening up load bearing walls in four directions on the first floor and adding engineered footers and supports, including a 10’ beam to open up the kitchen. These changes
allowed for creation of a new floor plan for the center core of the home and a new redesign of space creating a bigger kitchen with a Butler’s pantry, indoor laundry, and library. The stairs were rebuilt using 1” thick hand quarried coral stone risers and a walnut base was added to the original iron railing.

“When people hear the word glamour, they think of some crazy over-the-top thing. Lisa Gilmore has built a reputation as one of St Petersburg’s top residential designers since establishing her company Lisa Gilmore Designs in 2011. The Central Florida native’s work has even been highlighted by such top publications as Architectural Digest, Homes & Gardens and Real Simple. She found her niche through a thoughtful bespoke approach in which she seeks to satisfy each client’s unique needs and take them beyond the territory of cookie-cutter interiors. She calls her philosophy “livable glamour” and she endeavors to capture the essence of every client’s personal style by creating interiors that feel glamorous yet accessible.
She’s been praised for creating inviting spaces, full of soul and charming details, where her sophistication and fine eye for detail comes into play, resulting in an atmosphere of contemporary polish and the cozy ambience that truly makes a space a home.

“At the moment, a lot of people are moving here from all over,” she explains. “They’re so excited for a new beginning and I’m excited to introduce them to St. Pete.” She’s also recently remarried and is enjoying that experience firsthand.
Through her work, she has the opportunity to channel that energy back into the city she loves.
“My husband Derek moved here from British Columbia and I feel like I’ve been re-energizing my relationship with St. Pete through him,” she shares. “We love riding our bikes. He’s a beer guy, so we go around to the different breweries. I love Book + Bottle. It’s a beautiful bookstore with a wine and coffee shop. I love Wild Roots, a plant shop where I go when I need some greenery in my life. I’ll walk around and smell the plants, which is inspiring.”
Gilmore says there is no “typical” client or type of home project they focus on. “We do everything from large scale custom homes where we are working with the architect and the builder to smaller projects like a bungalow that needs a refresh,” she explains. “I don’t choose based on the size of the project. I choose based on a personal connection, their goals and if I’m excited about it.”
“We’re working on an incredible midcentury modern renovation,” she explains. “We have gutted it and stripped away the bad ‘90s and early 2000s upgrades. It leans very midcentury, but we brought in a lot of modern elements and artistic influences.”
“We have a local artist doing some paintings on the walls for us,” she says. “We also work with local furniture makers. I love to design furniture and have it fabricated locally. One of my favorites is an architectural millwork company called T2TheS.”

This year, the “purely jazz” weekend will take place November 18-20.

Home design incorporates many aspects when creating your ideal living space, indoors and out. From initial construction or remodel to décor, furnishings and artwork, the experts in each facet of the process are all seeing the same trend. Artist and owner of Gulf Coast Gallery Pam Van Zant is seeing a strong demand for abstract art. She notes: “People are tired of feeling restrained, contained even, from the confines of our society and the pandemic and I think they are looking for art that frees them and speaks to Artthem.”creates the mood and the emotional state of mind in a space and as an artist herself, Pam says: “I’m seeing demand for bold pops of color. Even on black and white prints, you will find one bold color or a few bold colors.”
When selecting or commissioning art she suggests you ask yourself what kind or energy or mood you want to create. This may take some inner reflection and research as to what colors and designs speak to you. Pam’s current project is a resin sculpture she is creating to mimic an ocean wave. Using natural elements such as sand, shells and mica powders, the goal is to capture the movement of water in nature. Artistry within your personal space is important, and closet space is an area where homeowners can create a functional and inviting area personalized to their individual tastes and needs. Maximizing storage space with a solution that is aesthetically pleasing is a common challenge.

open mind and allow a designer to do what they do best. Although massive closets can be complicated, Montanez likes to keep things simple. On a recent design of a 30-foot-long closet with 10-foot ceilings the solution was to take advantage of the added height by adding an extra tier of storage. Extending your personal style to outdoor spaces makes sense when you live where others vacation. Outdoor living spaces are mimicking interior furniture lines according to Stephanie Stegman of Elegant Outdoor Living. “The transitional/modern style outdoors is trending right now,” she says. “Outdoor leather fabrics along with styles and outdoor pillows constructed and designed to look more like luxury indoor pillows is very popular. More streamlined styles and frames not as bulky. We are seeing lots of black, with natural elements like teak and driftwood, and accents of golds and greens.” Toss pillows are being designed with beautiful designs and colors adding fringe, rope details, embroidery, faux fur, faux leather all created with outdoor fabric. Clients are also requesting smaller scale furniture, but adding separate entertaining spaces outdoors. For instance, having a dining area as well as a fire pit chat area.

Some people were able to find relief with medications, injections or surgeries but many times we would see them come back within days, weeks or months. I saw their lives were not only filled with discomfort but their days were filled with doctors appointments, hospital stays, ER visits, prescription refills and physical therapy. That is no way to live. Not only does it take a toll on the person but it also takes a toll on their family members as well.”

With his busy schedule, the homeowner relied on Tampa-based owner’s representative, real estate building/construction consulting firm InVision Advisors to get the job done. The company came on board in 2019 to work as owner representative with the builder, Alvarez Homes, and interior designer Sharon Laird (ASID) of Surrounding Interiors, Inc. InVision Advisors provides expert knowledge of the design and construction process and industry best practices, consulting with the owner during every step of the build process to help interpret and make decisions.
The owner travels extensively for business and pleasure and the home reflects his favorite influences from his international travels. He has a keen interest in technology, certain colors, and for art and materials that have been chosen specifically for each room.
In the St. Petersburg home, some of the unique aspects include:
“Luxury homes are one of the hardest project types to undertake,” says InVision Advisors President Jonathan Moore. “There are so many design considerations paired with very personal decisions. Having an owner’s representative to manage all of those decisions along with the schedule, budget and quality makes the process easier and more efficient for very busy homeowners.”
There are homes and then there are homes. A custom-built highly unique 7,500-square-foot home in St. Petersburg that was three years in the making recently welcomed its new owner. The lavish state-of-the-art six-bedroom home was designed with quality and uniqueness as a priority, conceptualized by the homeowner, a local businessman, who wanted a truly custom dream home.

The art pieces were meticulously selected for specific rooms with the desire to convey certain feelings in various living spaces. Many pieces are kinetic, interactive and technologically produced.
• Electronic kinetic, color-changing, LED and laser light art throughout both indoor and outdoor•Nopainted wall surfaces; virtually all walls feature custom wallcovering in fabrics, linens, satins, suedes, leathers, grasses, mother-of-pearl
The owner looks forward to enjoying every element of his custom home along with family and guests. Dramatic touches throughout the home include a 2-story water wall, left. Below, a unique wine storage system is adjacent to the formal dining area. Next page, a 2-story living plant wall is in the back patio. Modern linear white chaise lounges face the pool.

Often, the furnishings were designed to display the various art pieces. A number of largescale custom art pieces were created to fit the architecture, including a 20-foot-high moss sculpture rising through the stairwell; an 18-footwide custom carved wood sculpture to fit a dining room wall; and a laser-art light show that crosses over the pool from main house to guest house.

Call for Redevelopment Proposals Was the Right One Half Page Ad
But Mayor Ken Welch made the bold move to hit reset on the redevelopment of the Historic Gas Plant District, home to Tropicana Field. While some may be miffed about the erased progress, Welch made the right call. Surely, it wasn’t an easy decision. The appetite for a plan for the transformational 86 acres only grew stronger as groups competed to earn the rights. Renderings elicited excitement as former Mayor Rick Kriseman narrowed the list of contenders, and tentatively chose the Midtown group just before his tenure came to an end.
Another key change: The prospect of the Rays making a full-season commitment to St. Petersburg has grown greater. When the process started, the Rays touted a sister-city solution that would have split seasons between Tampa Bay and Montreal.
Meanwhile, the tourism tax, if the Pinellas County Commission is willing, could help fund a new stadium.
Even I called for the city to boldly move forward. Welch made it clear he would reassess the bids from Midtown and the other finalist, Sugar Hill, before finalizing the effort. But his call for a complete do-over came as a surprise. Yet if you drill deeper and consider the city’s changing dynamics, starting over made sense. First of all, the city’s need for affordable and workforce housing ballooned into a full-blown crisis since Kriseman first started the process. The reset gives the new mayor a chance to address that most important community need.
When my oldest son Mat was 12, he invited a friend over to show him all the progress he had made on a certain video game. He had vanquished villains, conquered levels and he proudly boasted how he would soon win the his friend hit the reset button on the video game as Mat played, erasing all of his progress. My son has never spoken to that friend again, and 18 years later, he’s still miffed. Clearly, hitting the reset button can result in some bitter feelings.
72 StPeteLifeMag.com September/October 2022 SPL LIVING
But MLB rejected the plan, and talk of the Rays crossing the Bay to Tampa cooled, in part because Tampa doesn’t seem to have the political will (or surplus) to pony up tax dollars for a new stadium.
The redevelopment grows more difficult without a solution to the baseball component. Unlike the original redevelopment RFP, which sought designs with a stadium or without a stadium, the new RFP likely will require factoring in a domed arena for the Rays. The team likely will be willing participants in the process this time, and that gives Welch a much better chance of bringing a diverse, multi-use development to Atfruition.aseries of recent community conversations about the redevelopment, Welch and his team engaged citizens with specific comparisons to other baseball-centric complexes, including Chicago’s iconic Wrigleyville. It’s the classic combination of affordable and workforce housing stacked on top of first-floor retail that he hopes to replicate, with a mix of job creators and office Wespace.cannot merely create a neighborhood,” St. Petersburg deputy Stephanie Owens said at one of the community conversations. “We must create a place where people also have the opportunity to enjoy, also have the opportunity to visit and also have the opportunity to work.”

In the final analysis, this isn’t as much of a reset as it is a remix.

Welch and staff will look to blend new concepts with a sentimental restoration of the classic neighborhood African-Americans once celebrated. It’ll hope to merge modern-day live-work-play concepts with features sure to make it inclusive for all. To succeed, Welch will have to vanquish villains (such as cynicism) and conquer levels (with public funding), but in the end he may very well win the game. And another reset won’t be required.
Yet make no mistake, this is also about restoring the energy this area once delivered to St. Petersburg’s African-American community. Mayor Welch has clearly branded this effort the Historic Gas Plant District Redevelopment – not the Tropicana Field Redevelopment – and he encourages supporters to speak openly about preserving culture and paying homage to the past.

Here are a few tips: Use one or a few pieces from the entire look We usually see a runway outfit as one integrated ensemble, but it doesn’t have to be. I love boldly printed suits. On the runway you may see it with mile-high heels with hugely wide and long pants and an overwhelmingly loose jacket accompanied with masculine elements like a white, unbuttoned tux shirt and a bold tie. As much as I love that concept on the runway, I believe it would be slightly overwhelming on someone larger than size zero and shorter than 6 feet tall.
The goal is to inspire us, deeply touch our emotions, make us fall in love with an idea we would strongly desire, an idea that will transform us into a fresher and greater version of ourself. Rarely however can we take high runway styles literally, and imagine ourselves wearing the exact attire in real life (assuming you’re not attending the Met Gala anytime soon). How can we take clues from those creative runway suggestions and transfer them into realty? How to break down a superbly artistic design and make it appealing and functional, trendy attire for everyday use? It isn’t as hard as you may think.

Modify dramatic styles On some outfits the print may be incredibly bold, shoulders superbly dramatic, color combo so daring that you would never dare, the decorations overstated, the ruffles overwhelming, or even all of the above. Try to take the cues from one element on the presented outfit. Your attire doesn’t have to be exaggerated to be fashionable. Use the clown-like jabot and downsize it to chic ruffles on your blouse or dress, use the bold color or print on one smaller sleeveless shirt. But no worries, you can use the same, or very similar jacket with a slim version of the wide printed pants to make the entire look simply wearable for most body types. But in 9th grade, he opened his heart to the genre of jazz. “Lakewood High School is known for having one of the best jazz programs in Pinellas County,” he says. “I started listening and practicing and just got into it.” He was accepted into a school jazz combo and later the Eckerd Hall Youth Jazz Program where he honed his skills. This ambition to embrace jazz made Loyst a perfect candidate

The additional outfield seating is a welcome policy change to last year when mandatory COVID restrictions required limited spaced seating near the stage at small 4-seat tables. “We were pretty much locked into that seating requirement last year,” says organizer Gary Hallas. “This year brings back the rows of stage seating similar to what we had at Coachman Park, plus there will be a general admission area on the infield where people can bring blankets.” In other words, not all general admissions will be relegated to stadium grandstand seating. General admission tickets also allow access to the grass outfield berm areas behind the stage, and the Tiki Bar.

for the Young Lions Program, where he continues to study through online master classes and is provided with performance opportunities. “Jazz has changed my life,” he admits. “I am extremely grateful to Clearwater Jazz Holiday for giving students the opportunities they provide to play professional paying gigs and network with local musicians in the industry. I love performing live for people who are interested in jazz. It’s hard to see myself doing anything else now except playing jazz.”
“It didn’t stop us in our community work,” said Weinberger. “We found creative ways to adapt to be able to continue. I believe our impact was stronger than ever. In 2020, we developed the Wanderlust series of concerts at small venues, mostly outside, to help local musicians who were not performing. We turned from live into virtual mentoring sessions, which continue today. We feel we are doing our part with education and outreach to refuel this interest in jazz and grow the next generation of musicians and fans.”

New GMC Sierra Denali is the Ultimate Truck
81September/October 2022 StPeteLifeMag.com SPL LIVING
Basically, it is a souped-up version of the twin from the other stable, Chevy Silverado. And just like its sibling, the GMC Sierra Denali 1500 4WD Crew Cab truck has been overhauled inside-out for 2022. However, the power train has been retained, at least the 6.2-liter engine so that this solidly built full-size pickup ensures quick acceleration from any speed, ample passing ability and accurate handling/balance. The four-wheel-drive system can be driven in auto, 2WD, 4Hi or 4Lo modes depending on road/weather Aconditions.6.2-literV-8 engine, mated to a 10-speed auto transmission, cranks out 420 horsepower @ 5600 rpm and 460 pounds-feet of torque @ 4100 rpm. Handling the suspension is an independent coil-over shock front and a solid axle rear. The power rackand-pinion electric power steering has an unswerving and communicative feel, making the truck easy to place at sharp curves. GM’s Dynamic Fuel Management system deactivates up to four of the eight cylinders for fuel savings. Tow capacity is an amazing 8,900 pounds. And yes, you can turn on the optional handsfree driver assistance Super Cruise while trailering too on select Thehighways.six-position
Multipro tailgate comes in handy as a table, an extension or a step to load items onto the lightweight carbon-fiber bed. And 12 fixed tie-downs each have a capacity of withstanding 500 pounds of weight. The robust Sierra boasts a mammoth bright and multi-dimensional grille with eye-catching Vader chrome accents, surrounded by revamped LED headlights with C-shaped elements. The rear also shows off C-formed LED features within the tail lamps and integrated dual exhaust tips. Our 5’ 8”-foot box offers 63 cubic feet for stowage.
Step into the airy interior and you will notice the redesign immediately. The driver now faces a 12.3-inch diagonal digital cluster instead of the previous analog gauges. The prior 8-inch infotain touchscreen is a sweeping horizontal 13.4-inch instrument panel. It includes built-in Google Assistant, maps, etc., if you are a fan, along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Alpine Umber interior implies you get full-grain leather appointments for the seats, instrument panel and center console, and lest we forget, a microsuede headliner and absolutely stunning open-pore Paldao wood on doors and center console. Moreover, if you want to be more visually amazed (we aren’t kidding here!), the embossed topographic maps of Mount Denali, highest peak in North America, will do just that! The maps have been laser-etched on front/rear seats, door panels and fender vent badges.

Indeed, the Sierra is a well-designed workhorse that you can go cruising on the highway or off the beaten path. It boasts an outstanding performance with plentiful tow capacity and a gigantic but even more high-tech and classy cabin than before.

Pets Can Be a Perfect Companion As We Age Pet Tales BY JENNIFER GROSS
82 StPeteLifeMag.com September/October 2022 SPL LIVING
The unconditional love of a pet may contribute more to your health than you realize. While aging can impact your physical ability to care for an animal, there are some real emotional benefits to that human-animal bond, or the “humanimality”. You may have to give up that morning run with your German Shepherd, but a lap cat or lazy Llasa Apso may be just what the doctor ordered. Here are just a few reasons: Meet New People Pet owners tend to bond over their love of animals. Whether it’s a walk with your neighbors and their dogs, a fundraiser for your favorite animal welfare organization, or just a chance to show off photos of your new dog or cat, the shared interest can help you meet new people and make new friends. A 2016 article printed in Science Daily cites research done by University of Missouri Health shows pet walking provides a significant means to socialize with pet owners and others in your community.
Sense of Purpose
A Reason to Exercise Fido needs to get outside a few times each day so make one of those a short walk around the block. It’ll strengthen your bond with your pup and enrich your pup’s life by exposing him to more smells. Plus, it’ll help you put one foot in front of the other with purpose. Slow speed, of course, to let him sniff every few steps. A study published in 2016 in The Gerontologist found that walking a dog can result in fewer visits to the doctor and a lower body mass index. That research also indicates that the deeper the bond is between you and your pet, the more beneficial that animal may be to your health. And whether you have a dog or cat you’ll need to clean up after your pet. Think of each bend and scoop as a step toward improved flexibility!
As your children grow up and begin their own lives, they become independent, no longer relying on you to provide care. For some seniors, that feeling of not being needed can lead to isolation. Bringing a pet into your life can quickly ease feelings of not being needed and bring a sense of purpose back into your life. Your new dog or cat will rely on you for just about Ifeverything!you’reconcerned about your pet outliving you, there are ways to continue providing care for the animal through your estate. You can consult with an attorney about a traditional pet trust or look into SPCA Tampa Bay’s Legacy of Love Pooled Pet Trust, which helps you set your pet up as the beneficiary of a trust account. While you might not work that 9 – 5 job anymore, pets help us maintain some sort of schedule. Having a reason to set the alarm and get out of bed, particularly as you get older, can be healthy. Most pets will let you get in an afternoon nap if you want, and many will even snuggle with you if they’re invited.

Routines are Good
Purr-fect Companions
The kids are all grown up and your spouse or partner may have passed away, but that’s no reason to be alone. Pets can make the perfect companions! The sound of your cat purring or the sight of your pup’s tail wagging can trigger a smile and provide instant stress relief and companionship. Research shared in 2017 by the Journal of Mind and Sciences found that the companionship of a pet can provide non-human social support and satisfy some social need in older adults. The right pet can be prescription to ease the depression and loneliness that can set in as you age.
